8 MEN S WORK OUT Thursday evenings with Tony Parzanese 7:00-8:30 p.m. $20 members $25 nonmembers WOMEN S EVENING ADVANCED CLINIC: Tuesday evenings with Tony Parzanese 7:00-8:30pm. $20 members $25 nonmembers BOARD MEETING Monday February 9th. 6:30 (craft room) MEN S OPEN PLAY Saturday mornings and Tues Evenings (check scheduler for times) PRIVATE COACHING AT RPTC Private coaching is not allowed at RPTC. Tennis instructors who wish to teach on RPTC courts must receive approval from the Board of Directors (parents teaching their children are exempt). Approved coaches are required to carry insurance with proof that RPTC is listed on the policy this is a liability issue. Coaches are also required to pay a court rental fee or a percentage and sign a contract with the club. This protects and benefits our club. It s unfair to our contracted Pros when they see under the table coaching. This also encourages others who want to do the same thing. Members who violate this policy put their own membership privileges in jeopardy. So, please remember to follow the rules. Thank you! 8
9 Dear Ump, ASK THE UMP! Yesterday I wanted to warm up with my partner in a league doubles match. I politely indicated my preference to my opponents. One of the opponents insisted that the rules prevented me from warming up with my partner if she objected. She insisted that the warm-up period is designed to scout-out the opponent s shots. I informed her that the purpose of the warm-up is to get the players warm so that they play well and avoid injury. She said that I was wrong, since players warm up their opponents all the time. What are your thoughts? Warm Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters Dear Warm, This is addressed in the USTA Regulations IV C (4) and in The Code P. 3. The best answer to this question is from the Code which tries to anticipate situations not covered in the USTA Regulations and is the guideline for un-officiated matches: Warm up is not practice...a player should provide the opponent a warm-up of 5 to 10 minutes. If a player declines to warm up the opponent the player forfeits the right to a warm-up, and the opponent may warm up with another person. Some players confuse warm-up and practice. Each player should try to hit shots directly to the opponent. (if partners want to warm each other up while their opponents are warming up, they may do so) The Ump. Note: Mike Kelley, long time member of RPTC, is a highly respected and very busy USTA official. He has years of experience and you can find him officiating at most of the larger USTA tournaments in the So. California area, including college tournaments. 9
