RPTC is looking for members in good standing (18 or over) who would like to run for election to the RPTC Board of Directors. Four (4) successful candidates will begin their two year terms in June Please consider contributing your time to the club as a Board Member volunteer. Our Board represents the entire membership, including active players, periodic players, league players, social players, daytime players, nighttime players, competitive players and junior players. We are always looking for new ideas and perspectives brought in by new volunteers in order to continue being a fantastic tennis club! So please volunteer yourself; or let us know of a club member who would be a great candidate! The monthly board meetings are usually held from 6:30-8 PM on the third Monday of each month (except December). Officers are elected by the Board at the beginning of each board term, which include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Membership Director. These roles entail additional time commitments. Each board member serves on Board committees or in club volunteer roles (tournaments, league coordination, fundraising, maintenance, etc.) If you are interested, please send a brief summary of why you would like to run, relevant experience, and how you hope to contribute to the club, by Wednesday April 13, W e will announce the candidates to the membership no later than April 17th and the election of board members will conclude and new Board members announced at the RPTC Annual Membership Meeting on the upper patio on May 15, Send your information or questions to office@rptctennis.com with subject: 2016 Board Candidate. 5 ASK THE UMP! Michael E. Kelley USTA Certified Official National Hard Courts Tournament Referee Premature Call I called a baseline shot out loudly at the same time I returned it. I realized that his shot had hit my baseline and immediately reversed my call, my shot went in. My opponent stopped playing, and claimed the point as a hindrance, I stated that I had reversed my call immediately and that my shot had gone in so a let should be played, which is what we did. Was I right? Dear Call, Not anymore. Up until the USTA approved a rule change in 2010, a let would have resulted from the situation you described. But now The Code, item #12 states that a player who calls a ball out shall reverse the call if the player becomes uncertain or realizes that the ball was good. The point goes to the opponent; it is not replayed. Ump Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters! Yet another unanswered question: My opponent came into the net, so I lobbed him. The ball was bound to go in, until it was snatched from the air by a man in a jet pack, who dropped it back onto my side of the court. The man claimed to be from the future and that my loss of that point would eventually, through a chain of astounding events, lead to my supreme lordship over a tribe of astral adventurers from the star system Ursa Major, whose devoted loyalty to me would prompt their utter destruction of the universe's blackest enemy and usher in the final culmination of a centuries-old war inside the firey center of a collapsing nebula. This is a let, right? Note: Mike Kelley, long time member of RPTC, is a highly respected and very busy USTA official. He has years of experience and you can find him officiating at most of the larger USTA tournaments in the So. California area, including college tournaments. 5

RPTC STAFF February Board Meeting Highlights New Election Committee: Steve Leffler, Onay Havens, and Linda Beach Board approved renovation of the office Board voted to discontinue the family court due to lack of a director Board formed a sponsorship committee: Mike Donahue and Linda Beach Board approved a $2,000 budget for a shade structure between courts 8&9 President reported on the Rec Council meeting naming future parking issues with Little League and Softball. 9
