3 Victory Against Westchester! On a crisp Spring Day in March, the brave warriors of Santa Monica Tennis Club battled against the warriors of Westchester Tennis Club at the plains of Reed Park. At the end of the day, 40 or so gentle folk, a good time did have. Victory was ours. I do want to thank Ron Elmer for his snacks, umbrellas and libations, and Elizabeth Dorzback for her strong support in making this happen. Mostly thanks go to the players for their good sportsmanship. Remember, we do this to test our skills, but mostly to have FUN. See you at the next event! - Harry Weiss Ain t No Mountain High Enough May 2006 That s the tune Santa Monica Tennis Club players were singing as they played an interclub match against Mountaingate Tennis Club on Sunday, April 9th. Despite a rocky start due to a miscommunication about the match time, coupled with the presence of a few ominous rain clouds, our 11 teams eagerly took to the courts against Mountaingate s fierce competitors. All the rounds were 8-game pro sets; the first round played was men s and ladies doubles. Although Mountaingate had two tennis pros in their 4.5 line-up, Santa Monica dominated the first round, winning seven out of the nine matches. By this time, the ominous rain clouds passed over and the sun came out in time for the second round, which was mixed doubles. Again our club dominated the field (to such an extent that the Mountaingate Tennis Director decided to stop keeping score!!). It was a decisive overall win for Santa Monica Tennis Club. We celebrated our victories over a BBQ lunch generously provided by Mountaingate in their clubhouse. The only unfortunate blip was, due to the start & end time miscommunication, some players couldn t continue past the two rounds of tennis. However, several people stuck around and played competitively fun pickup games. It was also unfortunate that the May newsletter containing the entry form for this event was distributed after the fact, so many of our club members were not able to sign up for it. This was an unusual occurrence and should not be an issue in the future. Fortunately, the Mountaingate players are keen on having a rematch, so there will be another opportunity for our players to participate. Despite these glitches, the interclub tournament with Mountaingate Tennis Club was a great success and we thank them for their generous hospitality. Special thanks goes to Marguerite Jorgensen, who nurtured a relationship with Mountaingate s Director of Tennis, Kris Jordan, for two years in order to bring this event to fruition. She even coordinated details at the last minute from her hospital bed while recuperating from surgery! Both teams had a wonderful time on a beautiful day and hope this is the beginning of an ongoing tradition. Notices: 4 Membership Cards should be carried with you at all times when participating in Open Play. SMTC activities are for our members and registered guests.
