2 SMTC TURKEY SHOOT 11/16/03 The annual SMTC Turkey Shoot doubles tournament was played at Reed Park on Sunday, November 16. Two teams played against one another throughout the day, and in deference to political correctness, they were the Hams vs. the Turkeys. Although a few protesters from the butchers union were spotted at the park, the day went smoothly and everyone seemed to have a good time. The tournament comprised two sessions, morning and afternoon. Twenty players, 10 Hams and 10 Turkeys, participated in each session. Once again SMTC Tournament Director, Elizabeth Dorzback, crafted a great format that provided new opponents and partners for most players in each of their five rounds. In a slight change from prior years, each session was treated as a separate tournament and each member of that session s winning team received a $10 Ralph s Supermarket gift certificate. The morning session was delayed about 30 minutes while Elizabeth and her crew cleared the courts of standing water from Saturday night s rain. She enthusiastically thanks those members who, without hesitation, jumped in to help in this massive effort: Richard McNally, Stan Weinberg, Jay Tichenor, Lori Drake, Kara Glover, Carrie Gold, Moshe Herscovitz and Ginny Johnson. Thanks also to SMTC emeritus member Lou Bock for gathering all the equipment required to carry out the task. When play finally got under way, the teams seemed to be evenly matched and it could have gone either way going into the final round. The Turkeys finished with a total of 110 games to the Hams 90. Moshe Herscovitz was the high scorer of the morning session, winning 31 of 40 games. The afternoon session started at its scheduled time and again the teams seemed to be evenly matched in the early rounds. However, the Turkeys, perhaps inspired by their morning counterparts victory, pulled ahead in the final rounds and finished with 107 games to the Hams 88. Mike Germroth led the afternoon session, winning 29 of 40 games. Moshe and Mike each took home a can of new balls for their efforts. Several players, as requested, brought non-perishable food which were donated to the St. Joseph food bank. Others donated cash and some even threw their newlywon gift certificates into the donation bag. Unclaimed gift certificates were also donated on behalf of the intended recipient. Elizabeth thanks Harris Levey and Jay Tichenor for stepping in to play when scheduled players had to drop out. And special thanks go to longtime SMTC member Richard McNally who was recruited to help run the tournament throughout the day. All in all, it was a happy and memorable event. IT S THAT TIME AGAIN! WAKE UP WAKE UP!!! Its time to climb out of hibernation and sign up for the SMTC SPRING SINGLES ROUND ROBIN!!! Compete at your own NTRP level. All organized tennis, trophies, balls 3. Saturday evening happy hour 4. Saturday night dinner Deadline for the sign up is March 1, Don t Let Non-members Steal From You At Open Play. In recent months, some people who are not SMTC members have taken part in Sunday open play. Some have lied when asked if they are members. Your dues pay for these courts; people who enter the open play without paying are stealing from you. (A person may play as a guest one and only one set in his lifetime, although his team may play a second set if victorious on the challenge court.) It is up to you, and not just board members, to make sure that you are not scammed by such people. Don t be afraid to ask someone if he or she is a member; it s a legitimate question. If someone isn t a member, and isn t someone s guest, refuse to play with that person. Remember, you have paid for the court. Don t let others freeload.
