The USPTA has a new CEO who will start working from home October 1, and will begin working in the office with Tim Heckler on November 1. He is a big name within the tennis industry: John Embree. He is a former college tennis player and tennis pro and has been Vice President of Sales at Wilson, President of Ball de Match and President of Prince. His consulting firm has been active with the USTA, Peter Burwash, Dunlop, and the ITA to name a few. Give him a big welcome at the World Conference. The board decided that since the World Conference is in NorCal we would forgo our Fall Conference this year. In its place is an exciting Specialty Course on November 4 at the Fremont Hills Country Club. The focus of this course will be a tribute to Tom Stow, a legendary coach in NorCal. Jim McLennan, Steve Stefanki, Doug King, Brent Abel, and John Hubbell will all be presenting the different aspects of the Tom Stow teaching philosophy. Look for more info on this great event coming in October. And finally, the election process for the NorCal board is getting underway. 8 NorCal Profiles 8 USTA S TENNIS ON CAMPUS HOW SWEET IT IS! By Denny Schackter, USPTA Professional As a USPTA Tennis Teaching Professional you not only teach those that come through your doors, you provide a circle of tennis information for your students every day. I am sure your older students are encouraged to sign up for lessons, drill and play, tournaments and league play while you encourage younger students to enter the game through play days, tournaments, high school tennis and eventually progress them towards college tennis and leagues. You might even ask all of them to attend local tennis events to show support for the sport and potentially ask them to join the USTA. When the USTA began the Tennis On Campus program a little over 10 years ago, no one had any idea what the program would bring. In those 10 short years the program has progressed to upwards of 600 colleges and universities working with over 35,000 nonvarsity collegiate intramural and club tennis team players. According to many industry analysts, this has been one of the brightest spots in aiding tennis growth over the past few years. As a USPTA member serving on the USTA s Tennis On Campus Committee, I have seen tremendous growth in this program. I believe the reasons are many; the participants socialize, fundraise, participate in community service projects, travel and network while actively supporting one another in a fun, coed team environment. It is the future. As a USPTA Professional, this group is extremely important to you because it will be your next generation of frequent players. Your facility should actively begin marketing to this expanding group for building membership and programming revenue, equipment sales, court time and for your survival. If you are working with high school aged tennis players, please be sure they are aware of Tennis On Campus. For the young person who wants to play in college, but may lack the skills required for varsity play, this is the answer. Please pass on the TOC website, to all your students and their parents. You will be glad you did.

9 NorCal Profiles 9 Tennis for the health of it! Wellness Tip By Brett Stephenson, USPTA P 1 Chair, USPTA NorCal Wellness Committee Owner, Executive Wellness Services REDUCE EXCESS BELLY FAT The human body is the most complex machine on the planet. Unlimited checks and balances constantly keep our machine running and producing, but sometimes the machine gets out of control and the body actually hurts itself. Excess belly fat on active people comes from a negative hormone named cortisol and over eating a poor diet. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands that is triggered by famine and stress. For million of years this hormone was a life saver. During times of famine when the very real question of where s the next meal coming from? was asked, cortisol helped the human body store fat to be used when there was no food available. Cortisol is produced during times of stress, like when being eaten by an animal or a dinosaur. (Oops, sorry got the time periods confused; only Fred Flintstone was alive during the dinosaur days.) However, in today s world of stress and ever changing meal times, cortisol just adds unwanted fat to the belly! Excess belly fat is also a result of a poor diet and over eating heavy meats, animal fatty oils and byproducts, sugar, and common table salt. This type of eating leads to poor digestion, bloating, and hard to get rid of stored belly fat. Initially, this way of eating just increases the waist size but prolonged consumption leads to major diseases/health issues! To lose unwanted belly fat requires a simple strategy of reducing stress and consuming proper whole foods. To reduce stress the best strategy is increased exercise and activity. Non competitive exercises are best to reduce stress like: walking, jogging, and yoga. Also, meditation is an activity that works wonders in dealing with stress. A plant based whole foods diet is best to reduce belly fat and develop the desired six pack abs. Every meal should consist of a lean primary protein source, two vegetables, and two grains/starches with portions of each no larger than the palm. The foods should be organic, when possible, and cooked as little as possible. Raw foods in their nature state are easier too digest and contain more nutrients than over cooked foods. Best Belly Fat Reducing Foods Fruits: Strawberries, Blueberries, and Raspberries Veggies: Olives, Avocados, Salad Greens, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans Proteins: Primary: Nuts, Grains, Beans, Seeds; Secondary: Eggs, Dairy, Lean Meats Executive Wellness Services is a company of world class professionals providing tennis, massage, personal training, yoga, nutrition, and green consultation to small and medium sized companies, residential communities and fine hotels. These services are delivered directly to the office, apartment, home or suite. For more information check out our website at or call

Players, parents, and coaches are very excited with the high level of play and the rapid progress of the players through the accelerated training they re experiencing. This program is based out of Rio del Oro Racquet Club and also utilizes the Sacramento State courts for match play. Congratulations to Chris Bacharach (Roseville) and Eldon Wilson (Chico) for participating in the USTA High Performance Coaching program in Carson recently. This is a difficult course and a wonderful way to continue education. Jim Walker from Lincoln Hills reports that his ladies super senior team won their league and reached the sectional playoffs in Monterey. These ladies are all between 62 and 72 years young. Jim says that his approach in coaching is to modify/change their strokes without changing their grips. His style is to add humor to practices while engaging them in repetitive instruction each week. Encouragment is a powerful tool. Congrats to Jim and the ladies. Hope you had a great summer and all this good weather continues for months to come. I ve been busy putting together an Adult QuickStart program for clubs around Sacramento. It s been fun, successful and a great learning experience for me. The day featured an exhibition match, free clinics, progression courts, and a complimentary barbeque. The sizable investment in the facility includes new Plexicushion 2000 courts, an upgraded lighting system, new fencing, renovation of the clay courts, a remodeled clubhouse, all new court amenities and more. 14 NorCal Profiles 14 TAHOE-RENO Christy Funk The Northern Nevada /Tahoe Region had a very active summer. The local satellite tournaments in the Biggest Little Tennis Association had approximately 500 entries, more than last year. World Team Tennis had approximately 130 players in a weekend tournament. Moving into the fall, high school tennis is now well into the season. The NIAA has divided Nevada into two divisions due to the number of schools participating in tennis. Caughlin Athletic Club was excited about the new and returning youth players participating in summer clinics and tournaments. They are geared up for fall tennis and purchased an indoor tennis net for the gym to provide year round cardio and lessons when the weather prohibits outside play. Programming for the club is changing due to the dynamics of more members having to work in today s economy, however an active fall is planned with after school youth programs, three cardio sessions per week, a mixed doubles drop in on Saturday mornings, Sunday afternoon socials and three USTA 40s teams. The Caughlin Athletic Club is excited to host the Northern Nevada Regional Championships October and also the Nevada State Championships on October for high school tennis. The University of Nevada Wolf Pack Men and Women teams will be using the Caughlin Athletic Club for home courts in 2012/2013. The coed intermediate 14s summer junior team finished second in NorCal to AVAC. The kids had a great time in Fresno, where the finals were held. They also were successful competing in the Southern East Bay Jr. League, winning the end of season team doubles tournament. BRAVO!! Steve Squire of Chabot Canyon pulled off another super Labor Day barbeque. Members, old and new, came with food and racquets to a wonderful afternoon long event. The mix and mingle format proved to be very successful. The Berkeley Tennis Club hosted the annual benefit for the boys and girls tennis teams at Berkeley High. Jeff Jue was the organizer. Jeff is trying save the tennis courts at the high school which the school has been using as a parking lot for teachers and staff. Students must walk 30 to 40 minutes to public courts for practice and home matches. Good luck! It was very special this year, with three ex Cal State Hayward players reunited in the senior division. Food was provided. I loved the donuts in the morning and the hotdogs in the afternoon. Steve Tiffin, Director of Tennis at the Woodbridge Country Club, had a great summer and is looking forward to the World Conference and getting his fall programming together. Happy birthday to Steve and his 1 year old granddaughter: both share the same date! Dan Purdy, Director of Tennis in Manteca and Modesto's Graceada Park, had a very, very busy busy summer, he says, "Life has never been better!" Mark Fairchilds, Director of Tennis at Brenda Athletic Club Modesto Sport, just finished hosting the 50th Anniversary of the Modesto Open Tennis Tournament. My, how tennis has changed since the 1960's! We saw big forehands and back hands along with 120 to 130 miles per hour serves! Mark reached the finals of the mixed doubles and the men's doubles. Speaking of doubles, don't forget to attend Mark's seminar on doubles at the World Conference; it should be GREAT! Soon Mark will team up with former ATP player Jan Tiilikainen of Reno to defend their doubles title in the North Star tournament in Tahoe. Brian Heiser ran a USTA family and junior tournament at the end of August at the club. Many thanks to the following NorCal USPTA pros who have hosted the Central Valley Junior Grand Prix tournament: Jack Schneider, Steve Tiffin, Bob Chino, Mark Fairchilds, Maurico Achondo and Mark Weir. Valley tennis pros are looking forward to the World Conference in Monterey to learn some new ideas and have a change to cool off after a hot summer of teaching. See you in Monterey! Did you change your address? Don t miss a thing! The USPTA World Headquarters and USPTA NorCal want to keep you informed of all the current news and member benefits. Don t forget to keep your address up-to-date with Kathy Buchanan at USPTA World Headquarters: membership@uspta.org. Your will remain confidential and only be used for USPTA business. USPTA never releases members addresses to outside parties.

20 NorCal Profiles 20 SANTA CLARA - SAN BENITO Ken DeHart kendehart@aol.com Todd Dissly of the Los Gatos Tennis Academy copresented with Nigel Pugh for a USPTA Specialty Course Beyond the Red Ball on August 23. The four hour course laid out a systematic approach to developing players technical and tactical skills at each level. Specific progressions for each level (Red, Orange, Green) were covered. These progressions were tied into the USTA Competencies for each level and laid out a clear pathway for coaches to implement in their programming. Todd also conducted a 10 and under workshop at Davie Stadium on August 5. Los Gatos High School girls tennis team has over 50 players. Since adopting a no cut policy the teams have expanded dramatically and exposed hundreds of high school students who would have never considered playing tennis. Senior Jessica Senna stated on the C Team three years ago and will be competing for a singles spot on the varsity team this year. The no cut program would not be able to exist without the support of Los Gatos High and the fantastic coaching staff of Milada Senna, Nemanja Sijacic and Takashi Hosaka. Caryn Cranston of the Los Gatos Tennis Academy directed seven junior league teams this summer. There has been a steady increase of teams over the last several years. Los Gatos Tennis Academy sent one team down to the Fresno JTT playoffs, which placed third in the 14s coed. Additionally, Caryn is directing the 12 and under teams which are competing in the South Bay League. Caryn continues to build players around the clock logging in over 60 hours a week. Recently, some of her players have gone on to play college tennis, including Caitlin Olsen who went on a scholarship to the Naval Academy, where she plays toward the top of the team. The Courtside boys 12s and 18s won the USTA JTT State Championship, directed by USPTA pros Tim Sunderland, Aaron Klapper, Slavy Elenkov, Chris Duarte and John Ryan. In August, Courtside raised over $40,000 for Hospice thru a benefit Pro Am tournament. In September, Courtside will host over 600 kids in Championship and Open tournaments. AVAC sent two junior teams to the Fresno playoffs this year in August. The 14 and under team won the sectional playoffs and is headed to the Nationals in Cayce, South Carolina in October. The club held a US Open Tennis Social Mixer for members on September 9 to raise funds to support the team s travel expenses, and another fundraiser will be held September 30. The 18s junior team finished a close third in Fresno. AVAC's Ken DeHart will be speaking at the USPTA National Conference in Monterey. Ken will be presenting a four hour Specialty Course: Drills for Strategy and Tactics to Keep Your Players in the Game. The course focuses on how to design drills, how to sequence drills and the five steps to adapting drills for all levels. Ken will also be presenting in Hilton Head at a three day Tennis Directors Workshop in October. DeHart presented a course called Defeating the Monsters in Your Mind for tennis players in the South Bay. The course is part of Ken's international program he presents and includes his similarly named DVD. AVAC will be running a fall red/orange/green ball league from late September through November with over 150 participants from various South Bay facilities. The spring league completed in June with over 140 that featured a six player format and lots of match play. AVAC's TAUT program is expanding and several orange and green ball tournaments are being planned as well as red ball play days. October marks the introduction of a new AVAC program called Soccer and Tennis, targeted at three to six yearolds. The program will introduce the kids to footwork common to both soccer and tennis, as well as educate parents through their participation on how to play with their children to prepare them for tennis. Ridgemark had a successful summer session, and has begun the fall after school program. Friday match play for the kids has started to take hold, and will continue through Thanksgiving. Ladies Interclub players have begun challenge matches, and are preparing for a fun season. The San Benito Girls Team has started their challenges as well, and are getting ready for their first match in a couple more weeks. Two 10 and under play dates have been scheduled for September 22 and 30 in Hollister at Dunne Park. Chris Yoder reports, I had the most fun this summer working with 8 10 yr olds. What a great age to start!

21 NorCal Profiles 21 FRESNO Sandra Gostanian NorCal Awards Chair The Fresno area pros report that they are extremely busy, which is a good thing. The downside of being busy is that many are not able to attend the USPTA World Conference. To those who do attend, have a great time. We ll be thinking about you! Mike Jizmejian (Sunnyside Health and Tennis Club) has been very busy with clinics, lessons, and as CEO of the Tennis Association of Central California (TACC). They have 275 players, through clubs and schools, in their database participating in over 15 tournaments each year. Teresa Samstag Haug and Francisco Gonzales (Sierra Sport and Racquet Club) are also keeping busy with clinics and lessons after a full summer of camps and team tennis programs. Sierra again hosted the Labor Day weekend Fresno City Championships. It was another successful tournament with players from 3.0 to Open. Dean Petty (Fig Garden Swim and Racquet Club) said that area youth enjoyed four weeks of junior camp this summer and that the fall junior programs have just started. They will be having two six week sessions before Thanksgiving and then a mini session between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Member/Guest Tournament was held September 8 9. Dean will hold a Tennis Across America event: a free Kids Day on Friday, October 5. I have had a very busy start to my school year. My students with special needs are getting back into their exercise routines and are looking forward to our Adapted Tennis activities. Thanks to the NorCal Board for all they are doing to welcome pros from around the world to our backyard for the World Conference.

23 NorCal Profiles 23 USPTA Social Media Policy **This policy applies to any and all USPTA employees, national and divisional leadership, divisions, and members, who are utilizing social media platforms to represent the USPTA. The purpose of USPTA s social media presence is: To encourage employees/national and divisional leadership/divisions/members to engage in communities (wherever they gather) to talk about our association, programs and services, and our work To build relationships, increase learning, and support collaboration To share our expertise with others To acknowledge employees/national and divisional leadership/divisions/members as ambassadors of USPTA and its brand To share the exciting things you (employees/national and divisional leadership/divisions/members) and we (association) are learning and doing Post up to date information about USPTA Way for consumers to find out about the USPTA, USPTA tennis teaching professionals, our products and programs For all 15,000 plus of our members to connect and network with each other We feel it is a great way to allow our members to communicate among themselves and with us We feel it is a great way to market and promote USPTA tennis teaching professionals, USPTA and the game of tennis Division Facebook pages can be used as a place to post upcoming division events, tournaments and results, meetings, photos, (with focal point on encouraging communication among members in each division and throughout the organization), etc. Julie Myers will be the primary contact person for social media. She monitors the sites and will let appropriate department heads know if there is a question they need to answer. Guideline points: State when it s your personal opinion versus an official USPTA opinion. Don't tell secrets. Respect proprietary information and content, confidentiality, brand, trademark, copyright, and fair use. Know the laws and don't break them. Don't discuss USPTA business without permission. Give credit where credit is due. Always cite when quoting someone else, e.g., testers, division presidents, industry reps, etc. Never use copyrighted material without permission. Mistakes happen. If you make a mistake, admit it quickly. Most of the time, you can then move on. If not, let the team help you fix your mistakes; explain the situation and the team can come together to find a solution to any problem. (Continued on page 24)

24 NorCal Profiles 24 (Continued from page 23) USPTA Social Media Policy Be a good conversationalist. Monitor and reply to comments within two hours, if not sooner, when a response is appropriate. If an answer is going to take more time, respond and let them know that you are working on it. Add value to the conversation. Talk to your readers like you would talk to real people. Consider content that s open ended and invites response. Encourage comments. Always add value and insight, attempt to educate, solve a problem or just don t bother. Be clear, but not defensive. Be polite and professional, especially when you disagree with someone. Once the words are out there, you can't get them back. Keep it professional. The USPTA name CANNOT be used to attack other organizations or individuals politically. These platforms should never be used for political gain or political mudslinging of any sort. National endorsees. Be sure that any events/logos/signage on social media platforms do not conflict with the agreements or interests of current national endorsees. If you are not sure if something is in violation of this please contact the World Headquarters. Exercise good judgment In addition to authenticity and transparency, good judgment is critical for anyone using social media within an organization. Be smart. A blog or community post is visible to the entire world. Remember what you write will be public for a long time. Be respectful to the association, employees, members, endorsees and competitors. Also strive to protect your privacy. If you sense a red flag, pause before you publish. If you re about to publish something that makes you even the slightest bit uncomfortable take a minute to review these guidelines and try to figure out what s bothering you, then fix it. If you re still unsure, discuss the situation with a manager or our legal counsel. Be respectful. It s OK to disagree with others but cutting down or insulting readers, employees, bosses, members or corporate sponsors and vendors is not. Respect your audience and don t use obscenities, personal insults, ethnic slurs or other disparaging language to express yourself. Think about consequences. Using your public voice to put down or embarrass the USPTA, our employees, members or yourself is not only dangerous, but not very smart. Avoid personal attacks, online fights and hostile personalities. If someone posts a statement you disagree with, you can voice your opinion but don t escalate the conversation to a heated, personal argument. Speak reasonably, factually, and with good humor. Conclusion We trust that you will follow these guidelines. If, for any reason an incident occurs that violates the policy, we expect you to bring the issue to our attention immediately so that we can work together toward a resolution. We'll work through each issue on a case by case basis, and we'll listen to every side of the story. (Any consequences will be commensurate with the violation.) Your participation in social media on behalf of USPTA is not a right but a privilege that needs to be taken seriously and with respect.
