Ronnie Dawson and Tully garnered second team All- Big Ten laurels while Josh Dezse, Troy Kuhn and Greg Greve were named third team All-Big Ten. Dawson and Tully also were named to the All-Big Ten Freshman team. After starting the season in the bullpen, Tully took over a starting role just before Big Ten play, making 11 starts in 16 appearances. The Elkhart, Ind., native ranked fifth in the Big Ten with a 2.22 ERA and eighth with 93.1 innings pitched. Tully, who tossed at least 7.0 innings in nine of his last 10 starts, went 6-3 and struck out 53 while allowing just seven walks. The left-hander ranks second nationally with 0.68 walks per nine innings and eighth with a 7.57-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Dawson paced the Buckeyes with a.337 batting average, the fifth-best mark in the Big Ten, to go along with 10 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 28 runs scored and 25 RBI. The Grove City, Ohio, native also stole 10 bases and walked 16 times in 53 starts. Dezse hit.246 with 10 doubles, five home runs, 27 RBI and 26 runs scored but came on in Big Ten play, hitting.308 with seven doubles, five home runs and 21 RBI. The Powell, Ohio, native reached base at a.426 clip in Big Ten games, the best of any first baseman, while slugging.590, the second-best among first basemen in Big Ten play. Kuhn garnered his first All-Big Ten honor after batting.290 while posting the best power numbers of any third baseman in the Big Ten, tallying 14 doubles, a triple, six home runs, 40 runs scored and 36 RBI. He was walked 23 times and was hit by a pitch 11 times. Kuhn ranked in the Top 10 in the conference in RBI, runs scored, doubles, home runs and total bases. Greve, who also was the Buckeyes Big Ten Sportsmanship award honoree, was named third team All- Big Ten after going 7-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 85.2 innings pitched over 14 starts. The senior finished 10th in the conference in innings pitched and tied for third with seven wins. Greve, from Cleveland, Ohio, went 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA in 54.2 innings pitched over eight Big Ten starts and has totaled innings pitched in his career, ranking 24th on the Ohio State all-time list. Greve Selected in 2014 MLB Draft Greg Greve was selected in the 29th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft June 7 by the Miami Marlins. In addition, Jacob Niggemeyer, a member of the Buckeyes recruiting class, was taken in the 28th round by the Chicago Cubs. Greve, who was drafted in the 45th round out of high school by the San Francisco Giants, was named third team All-Big Ten in 2014 after going 7-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 85.2 innings pitched over 14 starts. The overall win total, which included a 10-8 record in Big Ten Conference regular-season play and a 2-1 record in the annual postseason league tournament, extends Ohio State s record streak to 10 consecutive 20-win seasons. The Buckeyes started the season with a 15-0 record before a hard-fought overtime loss at Michigan State. After an rare four-game losing streak, Ohio State rallied to finish the season with 10 wins during the final 16 contests of the season. Ohio State s defense, the third best defense in the country, kept the Buckeyes within striking distance all year. In the 10 losses, the Buckeyes fell by less than 10 points in seven of those games. Five of the losses were by four or fewer points. Nine times Ohio State won by less than 10 points, including three of the last five games of the year. Several Buckeyes earned individual honors along with way in Aaron Craft, the all-time Big Ten leader in career steals (337), was named the 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as selected by the league coaches. Craft also won the honor as a sophomore in Craft was a member of the league s all-defensive team every year of his career ( ). He is the second Big Ten player to make the team four times (Chris Kramer, Purdue, ). Shannon Scott also was recognized as a league all-defensive team member this year for the second-consecutive season (2013, 2014). Scott was second in the league this year, behind Craft (80) in total steals (64). Thad Matta has coached six players who have combined to earn 10 spots on the league s all-defensive team. His players have won three league defensive players of the year. Greg Oden won the honor in Media covering the Big Ten selected Aaron Craft as a second team All-Big Ten honoree while placing LaQuinton Ross on the honorable mention list. The league coaches named both Craft and Ross to the All-Big Ten third team. Lenzelle Smith Jr. was named Ohio State s 2014 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree. The Buckeyes started the season with a upset win on the road at West Virginia, a team that went on to earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Overall, Ohio State defeated five of the 64 teams in the NCAA field, including a one-point buzzer-beater loss to Gonzaga and a four-point loss at Georgia. But the highlight of the season came in March when the Buckeyes made an improbable run to the Big Ten tournament semifinals, upsetting No. 1 seed Penn State, 99-82, along the way. Ohio State nearly reached the championship game, falling to Iowa, 77-73, in the semifinals. In the win over the Lady Lions, Ohio State set tournament records for points scored (99), points in a half (58, first half) and field goal percentage (62.1). Sophomore Ameryst Alston, a first team All-Big Ten performer, was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 27.7 points and 4.3 assists and hitting 10 3FGs in the three tournament games. Alston ranked third in the Big Ten with 20.3 ppg in conference play during the season. Alston Named First Team All-Big Ten Sophomore guard Ameryst Alston was named to the 2014 First Team All-Big Ten Women s Basketball team by the coaches and the media. Her honor marked the 10th consecutive season that at least one Buckeye has earned first team honors and was the 12th overall selection since Joining Alston among the honorees was junior guard Raven Ferguson, who earned honorable mention honors. Alston finished the regular season third in the conference with 20.3 ppg in Big Ten play and ranked second in minutes played (36.6) in all games. Alston shot 45.1 percent from the field and 83.2 percent from the free throw line. Alston scored in double-figures in all but two games and enjoyed three 30-point performances, joining only a handful of Buckeyes who have scored at least 30 points in consecutive games in their careers. Ferguson was a major contributor off the bench for the Buckeyes this season and was a top contender for Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year honors. The Columbus native was second on the team and 22nd in the Big Ten in scoring with 12.8 ppg in conference play, scoring in double-figures in 11 of 16 Big Ten games, including seven straight. 14 FIELD HOCKEY The 2013 Ohio State field hockey team finished 6-13 overall, highlighted by a 3-2 upset of second-seeded and 12th-ranked Northwestern in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Overall, the Buckeyes averaged 12.3 shots and 1.89 goals per game. Their leading scorer was sophomore Peanut Johnson, who notched 10 goals and two assists for a team-high 22 points. Not far behind was senior Mona Frommhold (eight goals, three assists, 19 points). For their efforts, both Johnson and Frommhold earned second team All-Big Ten honors. Additionally, Johnson was a first team All-NFHCA West Region selection while Frommhold was chosen to the second team. Johnson enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign as she registered hat tricks against Missouri State (Sept.6) and No. 17 Louisville (Oct. 1). She finished tied for ninth in the Big Ten in goals scored. In the Buckeyes 3-2 upset of Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament, Johnson scored once and also assisted on another goal. Frommhold, a NFHCA National Academic Squad selection and Academic All-Big Ten, finished her Buckeye career as a veteran of 57 games. She scored in each of Ohio State s Big Ten Tournament games, including what proved to be the game-winning tally against Northwestern in the quarterfinals. On defense, Ohio State goalies made a total of 95 saves, including 81 from junior Sarah Lemieux. She started all 18 games and stopped a season-high eight shots on five different occasions (vs. New Hampshire, Syracuse, Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State). SENIOR CLASS The 2013 seniors were a part of a Big Ten regular season championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program s first trip to the Final Four in YOUTH MOVEMENT Of the 103 points scored this year by Ohio State, 61.7% came from underclassmen. INSTANT IMPACT Brooke Hiltz was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Oct. 8. Hiltz was a key component to the Buckeyes penalty corner unit and posted an assist in the team s 2-1 victory against Ohio on Oct. 6. She finished fifth on the squad with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Hiltz notched seven points in a five-game span, highlighted by a five-point performance in a 4-3 win over Kent State. CONFERENCE CUP REVIEW Ohio State went 1-1 during the opening weekend of 2013 at the Conference Cup in Philadelphia, Pa. The Buckeyes dropped their opening contest vs. Temple, 4-1. Freshman midfielder Paige Hamilton scored the lone goal in her first career start, while classmate forward Brooke Hiltz also started in her first collegiate game vs. the Owls. The Buckeyes rebounded in thrilling fashion to close out the classic after upsetting No. 20 UNH, 3-2, in an overtime shootout. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Lemieux made her first career start, posting eight saves, including three in extra time. OPENING WEEKEND HONORS Junior goalkeeper Sarah Lemieux and freshman midfielder Paige Hamilton were named Big Ten Defensive and Freshman Player of the Week, respectively, for their performances at the Conference Cup in Philadelphia, Pa. Lemieux, a native of Dublin, Ohio, helped the Buckeyes to a 3-2 upset victory vs. No. 20 New Hampshire Sept. 1 in her first career start for the Scarlet and Gray. Lemieux posted eight saves, including three in extra time. She went on to deny the final two UNH attempts during the shootout after 100 minutes of action. Hamilton, a native of Port Moody, British Columbia, scored two goals during the Buckeyes opening weekend games. In her Buckeye debut, the OSU rookie posted the team s lone goal in the loss to Temple. She helped the Buckeyes to a 3-2 upset victory vs. No. 20 New Hampshire on Sunday after scoring the game-tying goal with five seconds left in regulation to force extra time CAPTAINS Seniors Arielle Cowie and Nora Murer served as co-captains of the Ohio State field hockey team for the 2013 season. Cowie, a midfielder from Trinidad and Tobago, was a 2012 Second Team All-Big Ten honoree, earning league honors for the first time in her Buckeye career. Cowie, who collected 66 career starts in four years, notched three goals and three assists in her career. She played in all 19 games as a junior. As a sophomore in 2011, she scored the game-winning goal in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament vs. Michigan State. As a true freshman, Cowie played in 20 games, including 10 starts for the 2010 NCAA Final Four squad. Cowie is a threetime NFHCA National Academic honoree, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. Murer, a back from Luzern, Switzerland, started in every game since the 2010 campaign, collecting a team-best 82 starts (most by active members). Murer has been an anchor in the Buckeye backfield the last four seasons, posting six goals and 10 assists in her OSU career, while being a part of 15 career shutouts. As a junior, Murer played in at least 70 minutes in 13 contests, notching a season-best five points on one goal and three assists. In 2011, she started in all 21 games, limiting opponents to 1.62 goals per game and 11.2 shots per game. As a true freshman, Murer, played in all 23 contests for the NCAA Final Four Buckeyes, holding opponents to a conferencebest 1.26 goals per game, while playing in a team-best 1,642 minutes as a rookie. Like Cowie, Murer also has excelled in the classroom as a two-time Academic All- Big Ten selection, three-time NFHCA National Academic honoree and three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. 19 MEN S GOLF The Ohio State men s golf team capped off the regular season with four consecutive top-5 team finishes, catapulting the program into a postseason run that saw the Buckeyes compete in their 46th all-time NCAA competition. Freshman Frederik Hammer highlighted Ohio State s trip to the NCAA Columbia Regional by firing a collegiate course record 64 on the final day. Overall, the Buckeyes placed 12th in the team standings with a 23-over 887 to conclude the season. Junior Boo Timko and Hammer each earned All-Midwest Region recognition from PING. Timkowas also placed on the All-Big Ten Second Team once again after pacing Ohio State with a round average. His seven rounds in the 60s and 10 under par both lead the team as well. Hammer was right behind Timko, averaging per round and matching Timko s 10 scores under par. The OSU duo combined for three aces on the season, including a pair of hole-in-ones for Hammer. Sophomore Tee-k Kelly played in all 36 rounds, contributing to the team tally 32 times while posting a clip and eight ledgers under par. A young Buckeye squad which featured zero seniors player their best at the end of the year. The hot streak started in mid-march with a t-3rd place showing at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. Ohio State then notched three more top-5 performances throughout the month of April in the Irish Creek Collegiate, Robert Kepler Intercollegiate and Boilermaker Invitational. Hammer led the charge in the OSU-hosted Kepler, picking up co-medalist honors for the event. The Buckeyes hoarded a large share fo frequent traveler miles this season, trekking a total of 6,913 miles to 12 different tournaments for an average of 576 miles per trip. The longest distance came with a 1,085-mile excursion to Sarasota, Fla., for the Big Ten Match Play Championships. Men s Golf was one of six OSU teams recognized by the NCAA for Academic Achievement. The public recognition awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top-10 percent in each sports based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Report (APR). 21 WOMEN S GOLF The Ohio State women s golf team finished in a tie for seventh place at the NCAA Championships; the third-best NCAA showing in school history and the top effort since the 2005 Buckeyes shared sixth place. It marked Ohio State s 19th trip to the NCAA Championship Finals, including 14 under the guidance of head coach Therese Hession. The Buckeyes have advanced to the final field of 24 in three of the last five seasons and 10 times since the turn of the century. While a trio of freshmen were the team s top performers through out the season, it was the lone Buckeye senior, Allison Harper, who saved her best for last at the national tournament. Harper fired a career-best 68 on the final day and tied with freshman Katja Pogacar for 16th placed on the individual leaderboard. Ohio State made a clean sweep of the Big Ten postseason awards as Jessica Porvasnik brought home the conference s Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year hardware while Hession picked up her seventh career B1G Coach of the Year accolade. Porvasnik captured medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships and was also presented the Mary Fossum Award, given annually to the lowest season stroke average relative to par in the Big Ten. In addition to Porvasnik being tabbed a B1G First Teamer, fellow freshman Zoe- Beth Brake joined her on the First Team and Pogacar grabbed a spot on the Secodn Team. Junior Clauida Lim was given the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. In between the NCAA Regional and NCAA Championships Finals, Porvasnik qualified for the 2014 U.S. Women s Open. She will compete in the LPGA s oldest major championship starting on June 19. The WGCA All-America honorable posted back-to-back rounnds of 73 to advance from the Butler, Pa. qualifier. 23 MEN S GYMNASTICS The Ohio State men s gymnastics team had its most successful season since in the 2005 campaign in , earning its highest finish at the Big Ten Championships since 2007 with a second-place finish overall and its highest finish at the NCAA Championships since 2005 with a fifth-place finish overall. The Buckeyes ranked as high as No. 2 and never below No. 4 in the 2014 GymInfo national poll during the regular season, closing the year fifth in the final team rankings. Throughout the season, the Buckeyes collected eight All- American honors, three Big Ten Individual Championships, two First Team All-Big Ten honors, four Big Ten Gymnast of the Week awards, four Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards and three CGA Gymnast of the Week awards. In addition, three members of the program (Larry Mayer, Sean Melton and Michael Newburger) set new NCAA and Ohio State records while the team as a whole set new program records in all six events as well as in total team score NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The No. 3 Buckeyes posted a total team score to earn a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Team and All-Around Finals April 11 at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., marking the best finish for the Buckeyes at the national meet since the 2005 season. Freshman Sean Melton and sophomore Jake Martin represented Ohio State in all-around competition, scoring an and to place third and fifth, respectively, and earn All-America honors. With his thirdplace finish, Melton became the first Buckeye since Randy Monahan (2004) to earn a Top 3 finish in the all-around. At the NCAA Individual Event Finals the next evening (April 12), Ohio State collected six more All-American laurels to close out the 2014 NCAA Championships with eight All- American honors overall, the first time since 2005 that the Buckeyes brought home eight awards. In addition to his all-around performance, Melton also notched a sixth-place finishes on vault and parallel bars and a third-place finish on high bar to bring his All-American total to four. In doing so, the Orlando, Fla., native became the first freshman in program history to earn four All-American awards at one NCAA Championship. Martin closed the three-day competition with two All- American accolades. In addition to his all-around laurel, the Oviedo, Fla., native also earned a second-place finish on high bar to bring his All-American honor total to two. Redshirt junior Jeff Treleaven earned his third career All- America accolade on vault with a fourth-place finish while sophomore Alex Johnson rounded out the All-American Buckeyes with his sixth-place performance on high bar BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS The No. 2 Buckeyes posted an overall team score of to secure a second-place finish at the 2014 Big Ten Championships March 28 at the Bob Devaney Center at the University of Nebraska, earning its highest finish at the conference championships since the 2007 season. Melton and Martin represented the Buckeyes in all-around competition, scoring a career-high and an to finish second and third, respectively, and earn First Team All-Big Ten honors. Ohio State claimed three Big Ten Individual Championships during the second day of competition, as Martin posted a first-place finish on vault (15.30), and Melton posted firstplace finishes on parallel bars (15.60) and high bar (15.375), marking the first time since 2005 that the Buckeyes won three individual titles at the Big Ten Championships. In addition, Melton was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the event, becoming the seventh Buckeye in program history to earn the honor and the first since Philip Onorato in ACADEMICS Academically, five Buckeyes were named Academic All-Big Ten as Misha Koudinov, Martin, Mayer, Newburger and Emeric Quade all earned honors. In addition, nine Buckeyes were named Ohio State Scholar-Athletes as Cory Barnes, Jake Dastrup, Koudinov, Martin, Mayer, Melton, Newburger, Quade and Nick Tagliaferro all earned the award. Additionally, Newburger closed his prestigious career as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year, also earning his second-consecutive Capital One Academic At- Large First Team honor and his third consecutive Capital One Academic All-District Team honor. A Big Ten Medal of Honor finalist and recipient of the 2014 Big Ten and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, Newburger will pursue a Ph.D. in Physics at Ohio State. MEMORABLE MOMENTS Along with memorable performances at both the NCAA Championships and Big Ten Championships, the Buckeyes also fared well against No. 1 Oklahoma on Senior Night and at the inaugural Arnold Challenge. Ohio State faced the top-ranked Sooners March 15 on Senior Day at St. John Arena, pulling off a stunning upset to close the regular season careers of its five seniors. The No. 4 Buckeyes posted a program-record to earn the upset win over No. 1 Oklahoma, which posted a The Scarlet and Gray claimed every individual event title against the Sooners, also posting team wins on four events, claiming first place on floor exercise (75.400), pommel horse (75.850), parallel bars (74.450) and high bar (72.750). Earlier in the season, the Buckeyes hosted the inaugural Arnold Challenge, hosting No. 2 Michigan, No. 8 Iowa, No. 11 Nebraska, the Canadian National Team and Arizona State at the Columbus Convention Center. Sarah Miller and Melanie Shaffer garnered first team All- Big Ten honors and Victoria Aepli was named second team All-Big Ten. With the first team All-Big Ten honor, Miller becomes the Buckeyes fifth four-time first team All-Big Ten selection in program history. 26 MEN S HOCKEY NOTING THE BUCKEYES The Buckeyes, under first-year head coach Steve Rohlik, were in and finished fourth in the Big Ten with a record in the first year men s hockey was an official conference sport. At the inaugural Big Ten Tournament, Ohio State advanced to the championship game, beating Michigan State in overtime in the quarterfinals and then upsetting No. 1-ranked Minnesota in the semifinals. An overtime loss to Wisconsin in the final ended the Buckeyes season. The team s 18 wins were the most since the NCAA tournament team had 23. The squad had 16 in and 15 in each of the three years prior to that. Junior Ryan Dzingel was one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award (the fourth in Ohio State history and first since 2003), an AHCA/CCM Hockey West First Team All-American and a First Team All-Big Ten selection. He led the Big Ten in scoring with 46 points and became the first Buckeye since RJ Umberger in to hit the 100-point mark for his career as a junior. Ohio State took half of the spots on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, with goalie Christian Frey, defenseman Drew Brevig and forward Nick Schilkey all honored. Brevig led Big Ten rookie defensemen in scoring, Frey ranked eighth nationally (fourth in the Big Ten) in save percentage and Schilkey was fifth among all conference rookies in points, ranking third in goals. The Buckeyes were 14th in the NCAA in both scoring offense (3.19 goals per game) and power play percentage (.204). The team scored three or more goals in 21 games and five or more in eight contests. This season was just the second time since a squad converted 20 or more percent of its chances in a campaign. In Big Ten games, the squad had a league-best 24.1 percent success rate. Three freshmen goalies started games and picked up wins for the Buckeyes in Three of the five rookie goaltenders who played in the Big Ten were Buckeyes during the season. Christian Frey was added to the Ohio State roster in late December and started 13 of the last 16 games. Matt Tomkins started eight of the first 10 games before suffering an injury Nov. 9 that forced him to miss time; he ended the year with 15 games played. Logan Davis, who started the year as the Buckeyes third goalie, started four games, including the inaugural Big Ten game Nov. 19 at Michigan. Ohio State played in the third outdoor game in program history Jan. 17 at Minnesota, taking on the Gophers in the Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The attendance of 45,021, was the largest for an Ohio State game in program history and the largest singlegame attendance for a contest in the state of Minnesota. The Buckeyes won four of five shootouts (including their last four) during the year, picking up four extra points in the B1G standings. Freshman Nick Schilkey led the squad with four goals in five shootout attempts, the only Buckeye to participate in all five shootouts. The squad picked up shootout wins vs. Minnesota ad Michigan, along with two at Michigan State. Ohio State came from behind for a win or tie in 10 games during the season. The most dramatic comeback was Feb. 7 at Michigan State, when the squad scored twice skating 6-on-4 on the power play with the net empty in the final 1:34, including the gametying goal from Alex Szczechura with 1.7 seconds left on the clock. On Senior Night against No. 1 Minnesota March 8, the squad rallied from a goal down twice in the third period. Buckeye alum Ryan Kesler represented Team USA in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi. He skated in all six games as Team USA reached the medal round, scoring a goal, recording three assists and posting a +6 mark. Kesler, who also played in the 2010 Games in Vancouver, is the first former Buckeye to play for the United States in the Olympics. Ohio State celebrated its first 50 years as a program Feb. 1. Three members of the first team ( ) dropped the ceremonial puck - Jim Witherspoon, Roger Hartsock and Richard Siferd. 28 WOMEN S HOCKEY Ally Tarr finished her career with 105 points, eighthmost all-time in OSU history. Her 48 career goals scored places her sixth all-time at OSU. Steffes and redshirt senior Chelsea Knapp combined to start 181 out of the last 183 games for Ohio State. Knapp finishes her time at OSU tied for the program lead in wins with 42. Steffes posted career best, and OSU single-season all-time bests, goals-against average (1.86) and save percentage (.935). Tarr was Ohio State s scoring champion for the secondconsecutive season as she recorded 32 points on 11 goals and 21 assists. Freshman Claudia Kepler had a team-leading 12 goals on the season, becoming the first OSU rookie to lead the squad in goals since Hokey Langan in Tarr and junior Sara Schmitt led the team with 21 assists apiece. The six seniors that suited up for the final time for Ohio State included Steffes, Knapp, Tarr, Annie Svedin, Becky Allis and Madison Marcotte. 29 MEN S LACROSSE NOTING THE 2014 BUCKEYES Ohio State finished the 2014 season with a share of the ECAC regular season title, as the Buckeyes, Fairfield and Air Force each posted matching 3-1 records. It is the first share of a regular season title for the Buckeyes since they were Great Western Lacrosse League cochampions in Highlighted by senior Joe Meurer s ECAC Defensive Player of the Year award, nine Buckeyes were recognized with ECAC Lacrosse League postseason honors. Defensemen Meurer and Robby Haus, along with midfielder Turner Evans, were named First Team All-ECAC, while attackmen Ryan Hunter and Jesse King, midfielder David Planning, LSM (specialist) Dominic Imbordino and goalie Scott Spencer were named second team all-conference. Jake Withers was named to the All-Rookie Team as a faceoff specialist. The honorees were selected be a vote of the league s coaches (who could not vote for their own players) and Ohio State led the league with eight members on the first and second teams. Meurer was named First Team All-ECAC for the second year in a row and is the second Buckeye to be named the league s defensive player of the year, joining 2011 honoree Matt Kawamoto. Ohio State has won at least one major postseason award each since joining the ECAC in Logan Schuss was the 2010 ECAC Rookie of the Year, Kawamoto captured defensive player honors in 2011, Schuss was the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2013 and Carter Brown earned rookie of the year accolades in Meurer went on to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors for the second year in a row, along with USILA Scholar All-America accolades and a spot in the North- South Senior All-Star Game. It marked the third-consecutive year Ohio State has had a USILA academic honoree after Joe Bonanni and Matt Kawamoto were the first Buckeyes in program history honored in 2012 and three picked up accolades in Junior Jesse King led the ECAC with 4.29 points per game, posting a team-high 29 goals and 51 points during the year. He was a third team All-American, moving up from honorable mention accolades as a sophomore. King was a Top 25 candidate for the Tewaaraton Award. Ohio State finished the year 11th in the NCAA in scoring defense, giving up 8.57 goals a game. The Buckeyes held opponents to less than 10 goals in eight of the last 11 games and allowed seven goals or less in six games on the year. After starting the season 1-5, Ohio State won five of six games (and four in a row) to even its record at 6-6. The Buckeyes were third in the NCAA in clearing percentage (.918), converting 225-of-245 chances. The team was 22-for-22 vs. Penn State and 21-for-21 at Johns Hopkins Feb. 9, along with a 17-for-17 day vs. UMass Feb. 16 and 16-for-16 outing March 8 at Hofstra. The Showdown in the Shoe returned to Ohio Stadium, as the Buckeyes hosted Michigan in a Division I game in Columbus for the first time. Ohio State downed the Wolverines, 15-6, in front of an announced attendance of 17,641 that grew to 31,000+ by the end of the game. 33 RIFLE The Ohio State rifle team had a successful season in , just narrowly missing the cut to be one of the eight teams qualified to the NCAA championships. The Buckeyes did send two individuals to the NCAA championships and had the highest finishes by individuals in program history. The team broke its combined scoring record, as well as team smallbore and air rifle records, multiple times over the season. They finished fourth in the inaugural Patriot Rifle Conference championship match hosted by Ohio State. 34 ROWING The No. 1 Ohio State women s rowing team continued its success from the previous season in 2014, becoming just the fifth team overall to win consecutive national titles and the first since Brown ( ) when it captured the 2014 NCAA Championship June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind. The team once again totaled 126 points after claiming individual titles in the first and second varsity eights and a seventh-place finish overall in the first varsity four. The second varsity eight of Daphne Socha, Chloe Meyer, Nicole Becks, Lauren Eckles, Meghan Birkbeck, Anne Dietrich, Katie King, Taylore Urban and coxswain Sami Jurofsky became the first team since Brown ( ) and the third team overall to win consecutive national titles in the second varsity eight event. The crew crossed the line in 6:59.43, finishing in front of second-place Princeton (7:02.02) and third-place Virginia (7:02.69). The first varsity eight of Aina Cid Centelles, Elodie Ravera, Eelkje Miedema, Ashley Bauer, Stephanie Williams, Catherine Shields, Holly Norton, Claire- Louise Bode and coxswain Victoria Lazur secured the national title for Ohio State, finishing the season with a perfect record (12-0) after crossing the line first in 6:44.48, a boat length over secondplace Brown (6:48.47) and third-place California (6:48.51). With the win, the first varsity eight claimed its first ever individual national title and became the second-consecutive Buckeye crew to finish a season with a perfect record as the second varsity eight did so (12-0) in Two weeks prior to the NCAA Championships, the Buckeyes captured their second-consecutive and fifth Big Ten Conference Championship overall, posting five varsity wins (first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, second varsity four and third varsity four) to total a championship record 164 points. The Buckeyes, who have now won three conference titles in the last four years, become the first team since Michigan State ( ) to earn two consecutive conference titles, and are now tied with Michigan for the most conference championships with five. 39 WOMEN S SOCCER Record: , Big Ten The Ohio State women s soccer team wrapped up the 2013 season with its fifth-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and ninth in 17 years under head coach Lori Walker. The Buckeyes went on the season and posted a record at home. Megan Fuller and Nichelle Prince garnered second team All-Big Ten honors. In addition, Prince and Alexis Degler were selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman team while Ellyn Gruber was the Buckeyes sportsmanship award honoree. Fuller played every minute for the Buckeyes each of the last two seasons, garnering a goal and three assists as a senior this season. The co-captain finished her career tied for sixth on the Ohio State career assists list with 16. Prince, a native of Ajax, Ontario, was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times during the season and ranked third on the Ohio State single-season goals and points lists with 13 and 32, respectively. Prince, who ranked third in the conference in goals and fourth in points, tallied a pair of hat tricks this season against Northeastern and Northwestern. Degler played in all 20 matches, making her lone start against Morehead State. The Cary, N.C., native finished tied for second on the team with three goals to go along with an assist. Gruber, from Cincinnati, Ohio, started all 19 matches in her junior campaign. The co-captain scored three goals and itied for eighth in the conference with seven assists. NOTING THE 2014 BUCKEYES BUCKEYES IN A NUTSHELL Offensively, Ohio State was led by the combination of junior Taylor Watkins, senior Evelyn Carrillo, sophomore Cammi Prantl and junior Caitlin Conrad. Watkins led the team in batting (.361) while adding 40 runs scored, seven home runs, 10 doubles and six stolen bases. Carrillo, one of just four unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selections, hit.358 with 35 RBI, 10 doubles and six home runs. Prantl checked in with a.329 average, a Big Ten-best 16 doubles, 34 runs scored and 34 RBI. Conrad, one of the most improved players in the Big Ten, hit.321 with a team-high nine home runs, 44 runs scored, 39 RBI and a.600 slugging percentage. In the circle, Ohio State saw the emergence of junior Olivia O Reilly, who settled into the team s ace role and finished with 17 wins. She pitched innings with a 3.02 ERA, 12 complete games, three shutouts and 93 strikeouts. Freshman Shelby Hursh led the Big Ten in saves with seven and had 89 strikeouts in 91.1 innings pitched. DEFENDING THEIR HOME TURF The Buckeyes finished 12-2 at home this year, outscoring their opponents (an average of 6.1 runs per game). Ohio State had a team batting average of.343 at Buckeye Field with 23 doubles, 16 home runs and a.545 slugging percentage. In the circle, opponents batted just.216 vs. Buckeye pitchers. Olivia O Reilly went 9-2 at home with a 1.88 ERA. SINGLE SEASON RANKINGS Cammi Prantl finished with 16 doubles on the year, the fifth most in single season school history. She had a hand in setting four pool records (three individual, one relay) at the Kenyon Winter Invite. She set individual marks in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.33), 500-yard freestyle (4:48.51) and 400-yard individual medley (4:21.77) while also swimming on the record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:23.67). Overall, Norris had six top-two finishes as Ohio State compiled points to finish ahead of Cincinnati (279), Oakland (246), Kenyon (244.5) and Ashland (140). Nine Buckeyes Invited to NCAA Championships Ohio State was represented at the NCAA Championships by seniors Alex Norris and Michelle Williams, junior Ashley Vance and freshmen Lindsey Clary and Taylor Vargo. 44 SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING Under the direction of second-year head coach Holly Vargo-Brown, the Ohio State synchronized swimming team wrapped up the 2014 campaign with six first-place finishes, including most notably winning the U.S. Senior National championship for the first time since In its final event of the season, Ohio State earned 57 points behind gold and silver-medal performances by the Scarlet and Gray squads. The Buckeyes captured five consecutive wins to start the season, which included a season-high 97 points vs. William & Mary in February. With a score of 89.0 points, the squad earned second at the North Regional Championships in St. Louis, Missouri before going on to collect four silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2014 U.S. Collegiate Freshman Emma Baranski and senior Julia Gaylard were awarded gold medals at the 2014 U.S. Collegiate Championships March 21. 48 WOMEN S TENNIS Ohio State returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010, earning an at-large berth into the 64-team draw. It was the 11th appearance in the national tournament for the program and the first under second-year head coach Melissa Schaub. The Buckeyes finished third in the Big Ten with an 8-3 ledger in Big Ten play. It was the most wins for the squad in league action since 2006, when the Big Ten began using just regular-season matches for final B1G records. It was the highest finish in the B1G since the team tied for third in The squad s 19 wins in 2014 were one shy of the program record 20 set in The team s 11 shutout victories set the program record, breaking the mark of 10 the 2010 recorded. The Buckeyes were a perfect 12-0 at home during The team last posted 12 or more consecutive wins at home in 2002, when the squad captured a program-record 14-straight matches at home. Gabriella De Santis was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the second Buckeye to earn the award from the B1G and the first since Kristy Dascoli in De Santis became the first Buckeye to receive the ITA s Midwest Rookie Player of the Year honor. De Santis, a unanimous selection, was joined on the All-Big Ten First Team by classmate Miho Kowase, while freshman Sandy Niehaus was a second team pick. De Santis and Kowase were the first Buckeyes named to the all-conference first team since 2010, while Niehaus was the first second team selection since De Santis was 9-1 in B1G play, while Niehaus was 9-2. The duo of De Santis and Niehaus was a perfect 7-0 in B1G matches in doubles, while the tandem of Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz was also 7-0 in league matches. Niehaus and De Santis had a team-high 19 doubles wins on the year, going 15-1 in dual matches, and ended the year on a 14-match winning streak. Niehaus led the team with 32 singles victories overall (losing just six matches), ranking second in program history for wins in a single season and by a freshman (Cami Hubbs, 36 in 2008). In dual matches, Niehaus, who won her last eight matches, had a team-best 22 victories. 50 MEN S TRACK AND FIELD Ed Beathea led the Buckeyes in his second full season as head coach to seventh and fourth-place finishes at the indoor and outdoor Big Ten championships, respectively. The indoor season was highlighted by the 4x400-meter relay team claiming gold at the conference championship, Timothy Faust winning silver in two events (60m and 200m), a silver medal for Donovan Robertson in the 60m hurdles and a bronze for Devin Smith in the high jump. Robertson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year for the indoor season. Demoye Bogle set the school record for the 60m hurdles in the first indoor meet of the season with a time of 7.65 seconds and Robertson tied the record later in the season. Robertson went on to earn First Team All-American status with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Earning Second Team All-American honors were Faust and the 4x400m team (Jordan Rispress, Javon Walker, Champ Page and LaMar Bruton). The outdoor season was highlighted by a great team performance at the conference meet and a surprise gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase from Jackson Neff. Claiming silver medals again were Faust (100m and 200m) and Robertson (110m hurdles). Billy Stanley started off the season strong, winning three-straight javelin events and being named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week the first two weeks of outdoor season, before an injury ended his season. 52 WOMEN S TRACK AND FIELD Head coach Karen Dennis led the Buckeyes to sixth and eighth-place finishes at the indoor and outdoor Big Ten championships in 2014, respectively. The indoor season was highlighted by Ashlee Abraham earning Second Team All-American status and winning a Big Ten title in the 60-meter dash. Abraham was named Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after claiming a victory in the 60m at the Armory Collegiate Invite. Chesna Sykes also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60m but sat out due to injury. Sykes was named Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the the Week after winning the 60m and 200m at the Buckeye Classic. Abie Ehimwenman earned a silver medal in the long jump at the indoor Big Ten championships. Abraham would earn her second gold medal of 2014 with a victory in the 100m at the Big Ten outdoor championships. Katie Borchers bested her own school record in the 800m (2:05.17) to claim her first Big Ten championship. SoSo Walker and Alexis Franklin earned silver medals for the Buckeyes at Big Ten s, competing in the 400m and 400m hurdles, respectively. OSU sent 11 athletes to the NCAA East Prelims and found great success as they advanced six athletes to the NCAA Championships in seven different events total. Abraham qualified for three events (100m, 200m and 4x100m relay) while Franklin (100m hurdles and 400m hurdles), Aaliyah Barnes (400m and 4x100m relay) and Sykes (100m and 4x100m relay) each qualified for two. Aliyah Everson (4x100m relay) and Borchers (800m) were the other qualifiers. Franklin s 400m hurdle time of ranks second all-time at OSU, Abraham s 100m time of ranks third, Barnes 400m time of is tied for fifth and the 4x100m team s time of ranks third.
