The Bobcats will first meet UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25. Texas State defeated UTA 3-1 on Oct. 13 in Arlington. TXST will then play host to UL Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 before rounding out the home slate against UL Monroe at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 29. The final home bout will be Senior Day, and the six Bobcat seniors will be honored prior to the match. THE LAST TIME OUT The Bobcats swept Georgia Southern 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) on Oct. 22 in Statesboro, Georgia. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Bobcats, who are now 4-0 all-time against the Eagles. Senior Kelsey Weynand finished with a match-high 15 kills on a.370 hitting percentage, while junior Jaliyah Bolden and freshman Megan Porter added 10 each. Junior Erin Hoppe ran the offense with 39 assists, and freshman Micah Dinwiddie commanded the backline with 22 digs. No member of the home team posted doubledigit kills, but Cathrine Murray tallied nine. Katie Bange distributed 24 assists, while Alex Beecher had 20 digs and Joscelin Morrow added 10 digs. The Bobcats led the evening in kills (47-32), attack percentage ( ), digs (54-45) and blocks (6-4). WHERE THEY STAND With the Sun Belt Conference ballooning to 12 teams, the league has moved to a twodivision format for the 2016 season. The Bobcats are members of the West Division, along with Arkansas State, UT Arlington, Little Rock, UL Lafayette and UL Monroe. The league will crown two division champions at the end of the regular season, and those two sides will claim the top two seeds in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, which will be held Nov at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. Coastal Carolina (8-1) leads the way in the East Division, while A-State (9-1) is atop the West Division with three weeks remaining in the regular season schedule. TXST (8-1) sits a half game behind the Red Wolves in the West and are three games ahead of UT Arlington (5-4). 2 tournament. BOBCAT BITS CONTINUED... JUNIOR, FRESHMAN CAPTURE SBC WEEKLY ACCOLADES Junior Erin Hoppe was honored as the SBC Setter of the Week, while libero Micah Dinwiddie was tabbed the SBC Freshman of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference announced on Oct. 24. Hoppe registered 84 total assists to lead the Bobcats to road triumphs over Georgia State and Georgia Southern. In eight sets played, she distributed assists per set, which included 13 per set in a sweep over the Eagles. She compiled 45 assists, six digs and one kill against the Panthers before tallying 39 assists, five digs and two kills against GS. Dinwiddie led the defense in the two victories. She totaled 43 digs overall (5.38 digs per set), which included 23 at 7.67 digs per set in the Bobcats sweep over Georgia Southern. She continues to lead all Sun Belt freshmen in digs during league play and is second overall in the conference in that category this season. This is the third straight week that Texas State volleyball has won at least two player of the week honors. TXST has also brought home each of the last three freshman of the week accolades. DINWIDDIE MAKES HISTORY WITH FIRST 2 WEEKLY ACCOLADES Micah Dinwiddie was honored as both the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Oct. 17. The true freshman from Lewisville, Texas, earned the first two weekly accolades of her young career after a dominant performance in Texas State s 3-1 win at UT Arlington Oct. 13. She registered a career-high 31 digs against the Mavericks, which was the highest total of digs in a four-set match by a Bobcat since Kacey Wimpy tallied 32 against Sam Houston State on Nov. 9, The 31 digs were also the highest four-set total registered by a Sun Belt Conference player this season. Dinwiddie averaged 7.75 digs per set, while also adding three assists and one service ace. This was the first time since the conference went to a four-award weekly system that a freshman was honored as the SBC defensive player of the week. BOBCATS NEARLY SWEEP LEAGUE LAURELS THIS WEEK Texas State had three student-athletes earn Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week awards on Oct. 10. Kelsey Weynand was selected as the SBC Offensive Player of the Week, Erin Hoppe was honored as the SBC Setter of the Week, and Megan Porter took home SBC Freshman of the Week accolades. The trio of Bobcats helped lead TXST to a 2-0 week that included a 3-1 victory over Arkansas State and a 3-0 triumph over Little Rock. This was the first time in 2016 that one school has won at least three of the four weekly awards distributed by the conference office. Weynand posted 4.29 kills per set (30 total) and a.292 attack percentage in the two matches. The senior tallied a seasonhigh 17 kills against A-State coupled with just three errors, and followed that up with 13 kills against the Trojans. The two matches were the first time all year Weynand posted double-digit kills in back-to-back matches. She had eight digs in both matches and finished with 16 total for the week. Hoppe averaged 11.6 assists per set and finished with 81 total. Against A-State, she recorded 44 assists to go along with 12 digs, three blocks and one kill. She registered 37 assists, three digs and two blocks against the Trojans. Porter finished the week with 3.57 kills per set (25 total) and a.292 hitting percentage. She also blasted a match- and career-high 18 kills against the Red Wolves and followed that up with a seven-kill effort on a.353 attack percentage against the Trojans. This is the first career award for all three Bobcats and the fourth weekly accolade by a member of the team this season. Senior middle blocker Lauren Kirch won SBC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 5. The last Texas State volleyball player to be named the SBC Offensive Player of the Week was Amari Deardorff on Sept. 3, Hoppe s laurel was the first by a TXST setter since the Bobcats joined the conference in She also halted a six-week Setter of the Week streak by A-State s Mallory Warrington. The last time a Bobcat was named the freshman of the week was Madison Daigle on Nov. 9, HANDS DEFENDING CHAMPS FIRST SETBACK SINCE 2014 The Bobcats toppled Arkansas State 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-16) on Oct. 7 inside Strahan Coliseum. The loss snapped the Red Wolves 23-match win streak against Sun Belt opponents. A-State went undefeated in league play last season and had not lost a conference match since Megan Porter paced the winning effort with a seasonhigh 18 kills, while Kelsey Weynand was right behind with 17. She also added eight digs. The Bobcats outhit Arkansas State The hitting percentage for the Red Wolves was their worst since hitting.126 against UL Lafayette on Nov. 2, TXST also led in blocks (11-5) and service aces (3-1). VOLLEYBALL SETS ATTENDANCE RECORD AGAINST BAYLOR The Texas State volleyball team set a new attendance record of 3,634 in a 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25) loss to Baylor on August 30. The previous attendance mark was set during the 2014 season, also against the Bears. BOBCATS PICKED 2ND, KOHL LANDS ON PRESEASON ALL-SBC TEAM Texas State was selected to finish second this season in the West Division behind defending league champion Arkansas State, who earned all 12 first-place votes and tallied a total of 72 points. Texas State garnered 58 points, and UT Arlington was third with 45 points. Little Rock was picked fourth with 39 points. The coaches also picked newcomer Coastal Carolina to win the East Division as the league moved to divisional play this year. Coastal Carolina received 10 first place votes and garnered a total of 70 points, while Appalachian State received two first-place votes and finished with 57 points. South Alabama was picked to finish third in the East with 40 points. The coaches also selected a Preseason All-Sun Belt team featuring Texas State s Jordan Kohl after she earned All-SBC Second Team honors last season. The preseason team also included five 2015 All-Sun Belt first team honorees. Arkansas State s Carlisa May, Markie Schaedig and Mallory Warrington, along with Appalachian State s Ashton Gregory, and Little Rock s Edina Selimovic were all first-team selections a season ago. USA s Mechell Daniel joined Kohl as a 2015 second-team player. KOHL CLAIMS TWO GOLD MEDALS THIS SUMMER Texas State s Jordan Kohl and Team USA dominated both the Pan American Games as well as this year s World Deaf Volleyball Championships in Washington, D.C. hosted by Gallaudet University. Kohl and Team USA won the World Deaf Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 sweep over Ukraine in the championships, 25-19, 25-11, The team bulled through the competition, only losing a single set in 10 matches. Team USA didn t drop a single set in the elimination round of the championships, sweeping Turkey, Japan and Russia en route to the championship. Kohl pushed Team USA to an undefeated record in preliminary play to claim the top seed headed into the quarterfinals. There, Kohl and USA dominated No. 8 Turkey, 25-9, 25-10, 25-5 before taking down No. 4 Japan, 25-19, 25-16, 25-15, to advance to the championship. No. 2 Ukraine fell, 25-19, 25-11, Throughout the championships, Team USA collected wins over Brazil, Canada, Japan, Russia, Poland, Turkey and Ukraine in the preliminaries. This came after Kohl and Team USA already won the Pan American games with Texas State s right side hitter putting down 49 kills in 15 sets to lead the team. With the team s performance in the Pan American games, Team USA clinched a spot in the 2017 Deaflympics to be played in Turkey. They will head there as the world champions after winning the World Deaf Volleyball Championships too. VAS MATT NAMED TO SBC LEADERSHIP TEAM Senior Shelby Vas Matt was named to the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team the Sun Belt announced as part of its announcement of the conference s full list of end of year awards. Vas Matt is a three-year letterwinner on the Bobcat volleyball team and, without a doubt, one of the team s most respected leaders. A member of Texas State s student-athlete advisory committee, Vas Matt majors in manufacturing engineering with a concentration in mechanical systems in hopes to be a factor in the world s fight against pollution and overuse of resources, a fight that is very important to her. In fact, she never misses an opportunity to hold her teammates or coaches accountable for it. The native of Happy Valley, Ore., is active in the community, always looking for an opportunity to help out and serve. In the classroom, Vas Matt has stood out at Texas State with recognition on the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner s All-Academic List the past two seasons. PAGE 3

6 KAREN CHISUM HEAD COACH / ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 37TH SEASON AT, (ENTERING 2016) The sixth winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I volleyball, Karen Chisum earned her 800th career victory in her 35th season at the helm of Texas State Volleyball. The landmark victory made Chisum just the 13th coach to reach 800 wins in NCAA Division I history and the 22nd collegiate volleyball coach ever to do it across all three NCAA divisions. Only nine other coaches across all three NCAA divisions have won 800 matches with one team like Chisum. Heading into her 37th season at the helm of Bobcat Volleyball, Chisum currently stands at for her career. Under Chisum s guidance, the Bobcats have won seven regular season conference championships and eight tournament championships. The Bobcats regular season conference championships under her leadership began with the 1986 Gulf Star Conference crown and also include Southland Conference titles in 1991, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008 and Chisum also led Texas State to Southland Conference Tournament Championships in 1991, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011, and a Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in Her teams earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament each year. For her merits, Chisum was selected Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 1991, 2000, 2003 and 2011 after receiving the same honor in the Gulf Star Conference in With 38 total years at Texas State, starting out as an assistant coach for two seasons before taking over the program in 1980, Chisum is a standout Texas State alumnus. She holds a conference play record of with a winning percentage of.710. In addition to being a highly successful coach, Chisum also serves as an assistant athletic director in Texas State s Athletic Department, a position she has held for the past 11 years. Most recently, Chisum led the team to a finish in the 2015 season with an impressive 13-3 record in Sun Belt action. Boasting an 11-2 record at home, the Bobcats finished the season tied for second place in the conference. The Bobcats picked up wins over instate rivals UTSA, UT Arlington and Sam Houston State along with a 3-1 victory over the 2014 SBC Champion Little Rock Trojans. Individually, both Jordan Kohl and Madison Daigle achieved Sun Belt All-Conference honors. Kohl set the school record in single-match hitting percentage with a.900 performance against Prairie View A&M on September 4, That helped the Bobcats as a squad set the single-match team record in hitting percentage with a team performance of.554 in the 3-0 sweep. Additionally, Sierra Smith finished her senior season as the all-time school leader in digs with 1,638. This came after Smith set the record for most digs in a season (548) and in a match (37) in In 2014, Texas State made its second consecutive appearance in the SBC Championship match after winning the championship in 2013, the team s inaugural season in the Sun Belt. With the 2013 championship, Chisum s volleyball team became Texas State s first ever Sun Belt Conference Champion as 2013 was the athletic program s first season in the Sun Belt. Under Chisum s tutelage, Kohl, a freshman in 2014, won SBC Freshman of the Year with an impressive 2.69 kills per set against conference opponents. Meanwhile, middle blocker Lauren Kirch, also a freshman, averaged 2.51 kills per set and team highs 115 blocks and 30 aces to be named All-Sun Belt in her freshman campaign. Setter Caylin Mahoney joined Kohl on the SBC Championship All-Tournament Team, making it Mahoney s second consecutive honor after being named the tournament s Most Outstanding Player during Texas State s championship run in Chisum earned her 750th career victory in 2012 with a 3-0 sweep of Seattle on the road Sept. 29. The team also saw two players, Amari Deardorff and Ashlee Hilbun, recognized as All-WAC performers to add to the long list of Bobcats to earn All-Conference status under Chisum s tutelage. Before that, however, in Texas State s final season in the Southland Conference, Chisum collected her sixth Southland Conference regular season championship and seventh tournament title. She earned her fifth conference Coach of the Year award in 2011 to further cement her legacy as one of the elite collegiate coaches in America. Her 700th career win came with a three-game sweep over Prairie View A&M in the team s home opener Sept. 7, That victory came a little over five years after Chisum earned her 600th career win with a sweep of Morgan State in the first match of the season on Sept. 2, Chisum has coached numerous athletes who have received all-conference honors with the Bobcats. In addition to Kohl and Daigle in 2015, Kohl and Kirch in 2014, and Deardorff and Hilbun in 2013 and 2012, four more athletes earned the honor in 2011 Amber Calhoun, Deardorff, Caleigh McCorquodale and Melissa Toth. Chisum has coached 25 All-SLC First-Team players during her career. Overall, 95 of her players have received all-conference honors, 75 of which were in the Southland Conference. She also coached four Conference Players of the Year. Kim Wells-Lauwers won the award for the Gulf Star Conference in 1986, while Stephanie Winn-Lane and Shenequa Bedford were named Southland Conference Players of the Year in 1991 and 2000, respectively. In 2011, Calhoun added her name to the exclusive list. Chisum has also tutored three SLC Newcomer of the Year selections, as Kristy Braun-Rioux won the honor in 1991 along with Krisha Neimann-Crosley in 1993 and Jennifer Dallao in Several of Texas State s players have garnered All-Conference honors in multiple seasons. In 1997, Crosley became just the fourth player in Southland Conference history and first Texas State player to earn All-Conference honors all four years. She earned All- SLC First Team honors as a freshman and sophomore and was a Second-Team selection as both a junior and senior. Kohl, a junior, has a good start with All-Conference selections in both her freshman and junior seasons while Daigle was just named in her freshman year. As proud as she is of her players honors and accomplishments on the court, Chisum also takes a great deal of pride in the fact that her players excel in both the classroom and the community as well. In 2015, the Bobcats won an SBC Team Academic Award while five Bobcats were honored for their individual academic achievements. Krystal Kolkhorst embodied Chisum s ideals as she was named to the ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America Third-Team, the SLC Setter of the Year and SLC Tournament MVP in She also earned the SLC s Scholar Athlete of the Year award in As a squad, the volleyball team has won the Emmitt P. Shelton Academic Excellence Award three times. The award is given annually to the top Texas State men s and women s athletic teams with the highest cumulative grade point average. Chisum s career as a volleyball coach began as an assistant at Goodnight Middle School in San Marcos. She moved up the coaching ranks when she was named an assistant at San Marcos High School before becoming the head coach at New Braunfels High School. Chisum led the Unicorns to a Class 3-A State runner-up finish in 1976, coaching former Texas volleyball and basketball standout Nell Fortner, who later served as head coach of the 2000 USA Olympic team that won a Gold Medal. Fortner retired as the head women s basketball coach at Auburn. In 1980, Chisum was named Texas State s fifth head volleyball coach and is still going strong more than three decades later. Chisum s influence in volleyball reaches far beyond Texas State. She serves as a member of both the NCAA and American Volleyball Coaches Association voting committees for regional and national rankings. She has also been a teaching clinician for various volleyball programs and camps throughout the United States. In 2011, Chisum was named a Texas State Distinguished Alumni. The award dates back to 1959 when it was presented to Lyndon B. Johnson, a U.S. senator at the time. It acknowledges outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the individual s chosen business, profession or life work on a national or international level. In 1994, Chisum became the first female to be accepted for membership in the T Association s Hall of Honor. During her intercollegiate days at Texas State, Chisum played on the softball and tennis teams. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the highest award a letterwinner at Texas State can receive. While Chisum gets the opportunity to impart her volleyball knowledge to her team on a daily basis, she has also passed along some in writing. She co-authored a book titled Developing a Successful Volleyball Program with former Bobcat volleyball player Stephanie Scott Jordan.
