For the first time in four seasons, the tournament champion will face someone other than Northern Iowa. The Cardinals, who are making their seventh NCAA appearance, will face Louisville Friday in Columbus, Ohio at St. John Arena. The MAC s Cardinals (25-7) will face the Conference USA s Cardinals (27-5) at 5 p.m. The winner will face either Ohio State (19-10) or Robert Morris (27-11) Saturday at 7 p.m. The MAC was 8-5 against C-USA teams, though went 0-2 against Louisville. A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS: As a conference, the MAC has a record in NCAA Tournament, which breaks down to a.286 winning percentage. Western Michigan has the most wins by a MAC school in the NCAAs with five. WMU is also the only league school to post two wins in one NCAA Tournament, defeating Nebraska and Purdue in Ball State is 2-6 in NCAA Tournament matches. MAC schools have dropped six straight NCAA tournament matches. The last wins came in 1998 when both Northern Illinois and Miami won first round contests. MAC s Record in the NCAA Tourney Western Michigan Northern Illinois* Ball State Miami Bowling Green Totals *Record only since MAC affiliation CAN BSU MAKE IT TWO STRAIGHT?: Ball State and Louisville meet for the second time in postseason competition in the last nine months but in different sports. The two Cardinal teams met back in March in women s basketball in the first round of the WNIT. BSU defeated UL in Muncie. ANOTHER TITLE FOR BALL STATE: Ball State won its league-record sixth MAC Tournament title on Nov. 30, defeating Akron, the East Division champion, in five games in Muncie. Cardinal senior Katie Butts was named the MVP after dropping in 32 kills and 18 digs against the Zips. Butts set a tourney mark with 70 kills, breaking the old record of 68 set by former teammate Megan Hammons. KELLER SETS TWO RECORDS, NEARS THIRD: Ball State sophomore libero Stephanie Keller set two MAC tournament records for most digs in a match and in a tournament. Keller had 34 digs in a three-game win over Eastern Michigan, while her 74 digs in three matches smashed the old record of 51, which had stood since She has also accumulated 577 digs on the season, and is six short of bettering the league s single season mark of WINS AND TOP COACH HONOR: Ball State head coach Randy Litchfield became the third coach in MAC history to reach 300 wins, a feat he reached with a first round win over Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament. Litchfield, who is in 14 years at Ball State, was also recognized as the MAC Coach of the Year on Tuesday (Dec. 3). This is Litchfield s fifth MAC coaching

The junior finished her third campaign by ranking second in the MAC in hitting percentage (.342) and in blocks (1.27), and also ranked in the top-15 in kills (3.41) and digs (3.49). Four times Hageman was named the East Division Player of the Week, and she also was named to the all-tournament team. LESSINGER RESIGNS FROM OHIO: Mike Lessinger, who directed Ohio to a school-record 25 wins in 2002, resigned on Monday, Dec. 2. In three years at Ohio, Lessinger had a record and a mark in conference play. During his stint, he led the team to an East Division title in 2000, two playoff appearances and coached the 2002 MAC Player of the Year in Laura Hageman. A LOOK AT THE NON-CONFERENCE MARK: This year, the MAC has found non-conference play to be a successful venture. The league finished the regular season (.591) against non-mac foes. The MAC had a (.600) record in non-conference play in the 2001 season. Two years ago, the MAC registered a (.463) record in nonconference play. MISSING FROM THE FIELD: For the first time in MAC tournament history, the defending champion failed to qualify for the tournament. Northern Illinois, which last year defeated Ball State in three games, didn t make the tournament, along with two other teams that made the semifinals -- Bowling Green and Miami. Also missing was Toledo. BSU CLINCHES MAC TITLES AND TOP SEED: Ball State won the Mid-American Conference volleyball regular season championship Nov. 16 against Western Michigan for the seventh time in school history, all of them coming since 1993 (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002). BSU shared the regular season crown in 1996, 1997 and The Cardinals earlier that week won the West Division crown for the fourth time, and the first since With a 17-1 conference record, Ball State has won at least 14 league matches for a seventh consecutive year. AKRON CLAIMS EAST DIVISION CROWN: Akron won its second outright East Division title on Nov. 23, defeating Marshall in five games. The Zips victory was their 15th MAC win of the season, setting a school record. The old record was 13, which was attained three times. UA s other divisional crown came in Akron s 26 overall victories sets a program record for the most wins while a member of the MAC. TOURNAMENT QUICK FACT: In the previous 19 MAC tournaments, a No. 1 seed has never failed to make it to the tournament championship match. The top two seeds have battled for the title have battled for the title in 14 of those 19 tournaments. 20 OR MORE WINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT YEARS: For the eighth consecutive season, at least three MAC teams have posted 20 or more wins. The five teams posting 20-plus wins ties a MAC record, set in 1998 and equaled in Eastern Michigan leads the way with 27 victories thus far, followed by Akron (26), Ohio and Ball State (25) and Marshall (20). EIGHT AHEAD OF LAST YEAR S TOTAL: More than half of the MAC -- eight teams -- have improved their win totals from last year. Marshall and Ohio have bettered its win totals from a year ago by 14 and 13 wins, respectively. Others who have improved upon wins from a year ago include: MAC s Most Improved Teams (Based on victories) School 02 Wins 01 Diff.
