2 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Quick Hits At 10-2, Ohio is off to its second best start in school history. The only team to better the current Bobcats start after 12 matches was the 1995 squad that began Dating back to last season, Ohio is 36-4 in its last 40 matches and is also 17-1 in the last 18 conference matches. With wins over Ball State and Miami this past weekend, the Bobcats have also won their last 20 contests at home. Julia Winkfield averaged 4.57 kills and 1.14 blocks per game over the weekend in wins over Ball State and Miami. Western Michigan head coach Cathy George recorded MAC win No. 100 on Friday with a victory over Buffalo. George is only the sixth coach in MAC history to register 100 or more league victories. Tera Lobdell became Northern Illinois career kills leader in Saturday s match at Bowling Green. Lobdell had a career four-game best of 27 kills versus the Falcons to up her career total to 1,490, which is also 13th all-time in MAC history. The next conference win for Ball State s Randy Litchfield will be his 200th, a league record. He would be the first coach to reach 200 league tallies. Ball State s Stephanie Keller will likely break the conference s career digs mark this week. The senior, who leads the league with a 5.59 digs-per-game average in 2004, has 1,890 digs and is eight away from moving into first place. Akron carries a nine-match win streak at home heading into its matches with Marshall and Eastern Michigan. Since 2000, the Zips are 34-7 at Rhodes Arena. Bowling Green has been one of the hottest teams of late. Since beginning the year 0-3, the Falcons have won nine of their last 10. BGSU is 2-0 in conference play for the first time since With Denise Van De Walle coaching at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, the Falcons are 8-1 under the direction of assistant coach and former Evansville head coach Mark Hardaway. Buffalo freshman Lizaiha Garcia had 30 digs in a four-game loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday, the sixth highest output in the league this year. Garcia s total is the most by a UB player since November 1999 when Somer Deschambault had 32 digs against Kent State. Garcia ranks 12th in the MAC in Mid-American Conference Players of the Week EAST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK Julia Winkfield, Ohio Jr., OH/MB Newark, Ohio (Newark HS) Ohio s Julia Winkfield is this week s MAC East Division Player of the Week after hitting.500 ( ) and averaging 4.57 kills per game in a pair of home wins last week over Ball State and Miami. Winkfield, who also averaged 1.14 blocks per game, had 16 kills and a pair of blocks in a win over the Cardinals. The junior then closed out the weekend by dropping in 16 kills, five digs and six blocks in a victory over the RedHawks. digs per game (3.58). Emily Lovejoy is closing in on a Central Michigan career kill mark and is also moving up the MAC chart as well. Miami s Tara Buroker moved into ninth place on the school s career dig list. Buroker, who has 965 digs, in ninth all-time at Miami. She is 35 digs and 42 kills away from becoming just the sixth player in school history to amass 1,000 career kills and digs. Marshall s Kelly-Anne Billingy had a career-high 30 kills on Sunday in the Thundering Herd s five-game win over Miami. It was Billingy s third match this year of 27 or more kills. The freshman is second in the conference in kills (5.30) and points per game (6.00). She is also tied for fourth in aces (0.49). Kent State will finally get a chance to play a home contest this week after eight matches away from the M.A.C. Center. The Golden Flashes host Toledo and Marshall this week, part of four straight home contests. KSU won its conference opener at Central Michigan on Saturday behind 16 kills and seven blocks from Ruth Ladurner-Schnitzer. Danielle Holt also added 15 kills and nine digs. Eastern Michigan moved past the.500 mark with a perfect 3-0 week to start conference play. It marked the seventh straight season that the Eagles have won their conference opener. Becky Baltare had a team-high 17 kills and added 15 digs in the team s win over Buffalo. Lindsay and Bethany Piccolini combined for 21 kills, 18 digs and 14 blocks in the victory over the Bulls. Toledo saw its school-best 10-0 start come to an end with losses to two of the hottest teams in the league. The Rockets dropped a four-game contest to Bowling Green, which has won nine of its last 10. UT then lost in five game to Ball State, winners of four of its last five matches. Kate Bean led the Rockets with 17 kills versus BSU and also had 16 against the Falcons. WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK Emily Manser, Bowling Green Jr., OH Westerville, Ohio (Westerville North HS) Bowling Green s Emily Manser is this week s MAC West Division Player of the Week after leading the Falcons to a 2-0 start in league play, the program s first 2-0 start since Manser and the Falcons posted wins over Toledo and Northern Illinois. The junior had 12 kills, 17 digs and three aces in a win over the Rockets, snapping UT s 10-match win streak. She then added 15 kills, 16 digs and four blocks in a win over the Huskies.
