4 Notes from the Diamond Fantastic Freshman Season Freshman Liz Vrabel's total of 16 wins ties her for fourth on the BGSU single-season list. She now has 150 strikeouts, the third-highest total in school history. Vrabel has a 10-3 record and an ERA of just 0.58 since the beginning of April. Since the start of April, she has walked only 11 batters in 85 innings (0.91 per seven innings). Falcons Familiar With Tournament The Falcons have qualified for the MAC Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Overall, BG will be appearing in the league tournament for the eighth time in school history. BGSU enters the 2003 tourney having compiled an all-time MAC Tournament mark of 8-14, having gone 1-2 in the first four trips, 0-2 on one occasion, and 3-2 three years ago. The 2000 runner-up finish was the Falcons' best placing ever in the MAC Tournament. The Falcons participated in the league tourney in 1982 (the inaugural tourney), 1985 and 1986, prior to the four-year run from UB's Nasti Hits.400 Again Buffalo junior Breanne Nasti hit.500 (4-for-8) in the Bulls' three-game series with Akron over the weekend to finish with a batting average above.400 for the second year in a row. Nasti set a UB and MAC record with a.451 batting average last season, and she ends the 2003 campaign with a.402 average, including.404 in conference only games. Nasti has maintained her spot as the MAC's all-time career batting average leader with a current career mark of.405 (153-for- 378). Curran Gets 50th Career Win The Bulls' 7-4 come-from-behind victory on Tuesday at Western Michigan was head coach Marie Curran's 50th career win. Curran has the most wins out of any coach in UB softball history after surpassing Nan Harvey, who compiled 38 wins from 1983 to NIU DIGS THE LONG BALL Northern Illinois has discovered a power source in its lineup. Actually, the power source is the lineup. Eight different Huskies have homered this season, giving NIU 23 on the season a new school record. The 2003 roster shattered the old mark of 19 home runs hit during the 1986 season behind six from Paige Shemoski now only the fourth player in school history to reach that plateau. Toni Del Toro is making a strong bid to become number five, blasting another round-tripper against Central Michigan to give her five on the season. WHAT A FINISH Northern Illinois second baseman Lisa Mattke is making the most of her final days as a college softball player. Over her last nine games, the senior has posted a.548 batting average (17-for-31) with five multi-hit contests, nine runs scored, seven RBI's and eight extra-base hits. On the season, Mattke leads the MAC in walks with 28 and tops the team charts in batting average (.361), runs scored (33), hits (48), doubles (12), triples (4), total bases (74), slugging percentage (.556), and on-base percentage (.475). Chippewas Close To Home Run Record Christin Sobeck hit a solo home run for Central Michigan on Saturday giving CMU 21 this season, one shy of the team's single season record. It was Sobeck's fifth round-tripper of the season to tie her for fifth on CMU's individual single season chart. Brander over.400 CMU's Michelle Brander raised her batting average back over the.400 mark with a 6-for-10 weekend at Northern Illinois. She was 4-for-4 in the series finale. Brander is batting.413 this season and is looking to become only the third Chippewa to hit over.400 for a season. The previous two were both All-Americans. Brander has recorded a hit in 33 of CMU's 41 games this season. Toledo's Fabulous Frosh Freshman SS Gina Muratori certainly made her mark in her first season with the Rockets. She led the team with a.307 batting average and performed even better in conference play with a.419 mark. Muratori also led the team in hits (39), runs (21), walks (20), total bases (54), on-base percentage (.413) and slugging percentage (.425). She also had a.526 on-base percentage in MAC play and hit in six straight games vs. top MAC opponents CMU, WMU and Kent State from March 26 - April 5, batting.444 (8-for-18) in this stretch. Akron Dominates Bulls Akron's three-game sweep of Buffalo last weekend gives the Zips an 8-1 record against the Bulls since UB joined the MAC in softball in Akron's only MAC loss to Buffalo came last season, a 9-0 defeat at Buchtel Field. McCoy Leaves Mark on Akron Record Book Tracee McCoy has wrapped up her UA career as one of the most prolific batters in UA history. After four seasons she leaves the Zips ranked among the top-10 on Akron's career list in batting average (9th-.327), hits (t-10th-168), doubles (t-5th-36), triples (t-10th- 9), home runs (t-2nd-26), RBIs (3rd-110) and walks (7th-58). Williams finishes with.431 Average Marshall s Amanda Williams finished the regular season with the most successful offensive career of any player in Herd history. The freshman s.431 overall batting average gives her the fifth best average in the history of the Mid-American Conference. Herd Leaves Mark on MAC Record Book Marshall s.296 team batting average at the conclusion of the regular season would place them third all-time in the Mid-American Conference. The Herd s 268 runs on the year makes it the second most run producing team in conference history. MU also ranks third in the MAC record books in RBIs (218) and fourth in stolen bases (107). Eyes On The KSU Single Season Records Several Golden Flashes finished in the top-10 in the Kent State single-season records. Sophomore Jodi Stevens tied for third in home runs with seven, while junior Carrie Eneix tied for fifth with six. Junior Rachel Testa tied for eighth in doubles with 13. Junior Kate Leary is fourth with 143 strikeouts and tied for fifth in both victories and shutouts with 15 and seven, respectively. She also tied her 2001 record of 30 appearances, which currently is eighth on the singleseason list. Preseason Poll Needs Recall Several coaches around the league were surprised when the preseason poll placed the Broncos fifth in the West Division. According to a survey of the MAC's head coaches, the Broncos were to finish fifth among the seven teams in the division. WMU not only proved the voters wrong by finishing higher than fifth, the squad claimed its first-ever division title by posting a 17-7 league slate. Since the MAC moved to a divisional format in 1998, the Broncos had previously never finished higher than fourth. Stewart Key in West Division Run One of the more impressive stories in the MAC this season has been the emergence of WMU's Laura Stewart as one of the top pitchers in the league. In her first two seasons at WMU, Stewart posted an overall record of 2-10 and an earned run average of The 2003 campaign, she owns an overall record of 10-3 and ERA of 1.56 to rank among the league's best. Those numbers improve to 10-1 in league games only and an ERA of 1.00, the best among any regular starting pitcher. Senior Day Success Shortstp Crystal Turner had a Senior Day to remember against Western Michigan. After the Broncos had hit three home runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead, Ohio came back in the bottom half capped off by a game-winning grand slam by Turner in the 8-7 Bobcat win. Tough One-Hot Loss On Wednesday Ohio pitchers Jenny Tisevich (6 IP 1 hit) and Kristie Howe (1 IP 0 hits) combined for a one-hitter against Youngstown State. Unfortunately, it ended up being a 1-0 loss as the Bobcats' five hits could not produce a run. Shea Leaves Mark on Ball State Record Book Ball State senior Katie Shea did not end her career without leaving her marks in the school's record books. The four-year starter concluded her career as BSU's leader in career batting average at.357. Shea is also BSU's career leader in hits with 203, doubles with 39 and total bases with 265. In addition, she ranks No. 4 in runs scored with 81 and No. 5 in at-bats with 568. Her name also appears among BSU single-season leaders several times. Shea Leads Cardianls In Hitting... Again Shea's.387 batting average in 2003 was a career high. It also gave her a sweep as BSU's hitting leader in each of her four seasons at the school. RedHawks Make Tournament After sweeping Kent State in a do-or-die three-game series, Miami earned its first berth into the MAC Tournament since the MAC restricted the number of conference teams to qualify in By winning its 15th conference game on Sunday to close the regular season, Miami tied its most conference wins in school history as it also won 15 in RedHawks Sweep The Competition Until the RedHawks swept Ohio on March of this season, Miami had not beaten the same MAC team in three straight games since 1997 when it beat Kent State three times between May 3-5, before dropping the last game of the four-game series. The RedHawks had never swept a MAC opponent in more than a twogame series before the Bobcat series. Since sweeping Ohio in a three-game set, Miami has swept Akron, Toledo and Kent State in three-game series during the 2003 campaign.
