3 Head Coach Cory Mee Cory Mee enters his seventh season as the head baseball coach at the University of Toledo. A veteran of 17 years of collegiate coaching, Mee and his staff are steadily improving the Toledo baseball program to where it can be competitive on a year-in and year-out basis in the ultra-competitive Mid-American Conference. Any rebuilding process begins with the recruitment of quality student-athletes. Mee has done this by developing the recruits he and his staff have brought in. Development is where Mee has made his mark as a college coach. As an assistant coach at both Notre Dame and Michigan State, Mee built a reputation as an outstanding instructor and teacher of the fundamentals of the game. Under his tutelage, almost 45 players have developed into professionals. It is not surprising then, that his focus at Toledo is on the development of each individual player in his program. This development starts with an emphasis on academics, an area where Mee s players have excelled. The Rockets team GPA has been above 3.0 for 11 of the 13 semesters he has been at UT, including a mark in the fall. During the school year, Toledo received a recognition award from the NCAA for finishing among the top 10 percent of Division I schools in its sport for Academic Progress Rate (APR) for a second-consecutive year. The Rockets had an APR of 983, bettering their mark of 978 for the school year. Individually, Jeff Cinadr earned a spot on the first team of the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV squad. Mee has also set new expectations for his program by upgrading the schedule. In the past six years, the Rockets non-conference slate has included schools from the Southeastern Conference, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12 and the Missouri Valley Conference to name a few. The 2009 version of the Rockets tallying a overall mark and a ledger in the MAC West Division. UT finished a close second to Ball State in the division standings, equalling the sixth-most conference wins in school annals. They played their best baseball at the end of the season and advanced to the finals of the MAC Tournament for the second time in school history (1982). Toledo s late-season run came to an end with a setback to eventual tourney champion Kent State at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe. Individually, Matt Kuna received second-team All-MAC honors, becoming the first UT hurler to be selected all-league since In addition, Jared Hoying ranked in the Rockets Top 10 single-season categories in (T-6th, 50), total bases (T-6th, 120), home runs (T-8th, 11) and doubles (T-9th, 15). Last spring, Mee also saw Justin Collop, Mike Hamann and Cinadr each get selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, tying a singleseason school record. In 2008, Toledo fielded a veteran team, but was plagued by injuries. The Rockets finished overall, in the conference and missed qualifying for the league tournament by a mere one game. On an individual basis, Drew Hoisington wrapped up his collegiate career as one of the most accomplished players in UT s history. The two-time second-team All-MAC selection finished first in school annals in career runs scored (180), doubles (53), total bases (393) and walks (111). In 2007, Mee led the Midnight Blue & Gold to a overall mark, including in the MAC, and earned a berth in the league tournament for the first time since UT finished first in the MAC in home runs (49), sacrifice flies (28) and slugging percentage (.448), second in doubles (116) and total bases (848), third in batting average (.293) and fourth in runs scored (349), triples (15) and on-base percentage (.369). UT also set school records in two-base hits and putouts (1,414). In addition, Hoisington established school records for triples (7, 17th nationally) in a season. Individually, Scott Boley earned a spot on the second team of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All- America Baseball Team. Boley became only the second member of the Rocket baseball program to earn Aca-

4 Head Coach Cory Mee demic All-America honors. In 2006, UT registered a ledger, showing an 11-game improvement over the previous season. The club recorded a 4.80 team earned-run average, the lowest mark posted at Toledo since 1991, two full runs lower than 2005 and Joe Roberts set the school record for saves with 12. The team also showed progress at the plate, finishing fifth in the conference with a.288 batting average. During his second year, Toledo ranked 12th in the nation averaging 1.15 double plays per game. UT turned a school-record 62 double plays in 2005, besting the previous mark of 58 set during the 2002 season. In addition, Mee saw two more players move into the professional ranks. In 2004, Mee s first season, Toledo posted a overall record. UT posted a.301 team batting average, fifth-best in the league. The Rockets, who had five players bat over.300, set single-season school records in doubles (114), at-bats, (1,930), assists (607) and putouts (1,398). Toledo was also third in the conference with a.454 slugging percentage and tied for sixth in on-base percentage (.374). A native of Hilton, NY, Mee was named the Rockets 11th head coach on July 10, 2003 and came to Toledo after serving as an assistant coach at Michigan State from Prior to his stay in East Lansing, MI, he served as an assistant coach for six seasons at Notre Dame (1993, `95-99). In 2002, Mee helped the Spartans post 38 wins (the most at MSU since 1994) and make its mark in the school s record books. The team set school records in hits (685), runs (500), (456), doubles (126) and home runs (95). The Spartans also finished fourth in the country in both batting average (.344) and slugging percentage (.563), fifth in home runs and 11th in scoring (8.8 runs per game). In Mee s five seasons at Notre Dame, the Irish hitters posted impressive numbers. All five Irish squads posted team averages of.300 or higher, while averaging 65 home runs per season. In 1997 the Irish set school records for home runs (66), doubles (127), slugging percentage (.529), while tying the all-time mark for team batting average (.334). The following year, the Irish again broke the home run record with 73. In his five seasons, Mee tutored 14 players who signed professionally, including four catchers. During his 10 years at ND as a player and coach, the Fighting Irish reached the 40-win plateau every year and participated in five NCAA regional tournaments. Mee was a four-year starter at Notre Dame from He played third base, catcher and second base during his career. In 1992, Mee graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor s degree in biological sciences and was named first-team Academic All- America. After graduation, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played minor league baseball for the Yakima Bears in the Northwest League. In 1993, he returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant, helping the Irish reach the regionals in the NCAA Tournament. He then spent one year at the Rochester Institute of Technology as an assistant coach before accepting a fulltime coaching position at Notre Dame. LAST TIME VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN (MAY 1-3, 2009): The Rockets won two of three games against the Broncos at Scott Park. UT emerged victorious in the first two contests, (15 Inn.) and 19-11, before dropping the series finale, Toledo hit.372 (51-for-137) over the weekend, while WMU accumulated a.383 (57-for-149) average. By winning the first two games in the series, the Rockets took the series against their West Divison rivals for first time in the last six years. LAST WEEKEND VS. NORTHERN ILLINOIS: The Rockets won two of three games against the Huskies at Scott Park. UT emerged victorious the first two contests in the series, 7-5 and 5-1, before suffering a rain-shortened 6-1 loss in five innings in the finale. Toledo hit.311 (28-for-90) in the series, while the Huskies tallied a.227 (20-for-88) average. By winning the first two games over the weekend, the Rockets claimed the series against their West Divison rivals for a fifth-consecutive year. ROCKETS ON THE ROAD: The Rockets are away from Scott Park this spring. UT is hitting.323 (322-for-997) as a team away from home, averaging 7.7 runs on 11.9 hits per contest. Sophomore Matt Delewski is leading the team with a.397 batting average, while junior Chris Dudics is hitting at a.381 clip. On the mound, Toledo s ERA is 4.69 away from home and they are giving up 5.9 runs on 9.0 hits per contest. ROCKETS AT THE PLATE: Toledo is second in the MAC, hitting.323 (482-for-1,492) with 320 runs (7.8 rpg) scored through the first 41 games this spring. Individually, freshman RHP Mike Hamann is second in the conference with a 2.95 ERA. UT s hurlers are limiting their opponents to hit a league-low.266 average, yielding 5.8 runs on 9.1 hits with 6.3 strikeouts per contest. In 2009, Toledo finished eighth in the MAC with a 7.02 ERA. 8 2010 Toledo Baseball Notes HAMANN HAS BEEN LIGHTS OUT IN 2010: Freshman RHP Mike Hamann has been simply outstanding through his first nine starts donning the Midnight Blue & Gold in Hamann has compiled a 4-2 record with a minscule 2.95 ERA as one of the Rockets three weekend starters. He has accumulated a team-high 55.0 innings of work, surrendering 22 runs (18 earned) on 49 hits with a squad-best 40 strikeouts. Hamann currently ranks second in the MAC in ERA, fourth in opponent batting average (.240, 49-for-204) and tied for sixth in wins. The Port Clinton, OH native has worked at least 6.0 innings in six starts, including 7.0 innings vs. Northern Illinois last Saturday, allowing one unearned run on four hits with five punchouts to collect the win (April 24). SUSCHAK MAKES FIRST START IN 2010 AGAINST HUSKIES THIS PAST FRIDAY: Junior RHP Matt Suschak made his first start of the 2010 season against Northern Illinois in last Friday s series opener, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with five punchouts in 5.0 innings but did not factor into the decision (April 23). Suschak has appeared in a team-high 16 games this spring, sporting a 3-1 record with a 2.05 ERA and three saves. He has accumulated 30.2 innings of work, surrendering 10 runs (seven earned) on 15 hits with 35 strikeouts. He is currently tied for sixth in the MAC in saves.
