(8/3/0/13) -- The Dogs kicked off their 2013 campaign at home vs. the Owls with a fi ve-set comeback in the Bulldog Invitational. The Bulldogs won the fi rst set by a score, but the Owls responded with second- and third-set decisions by and counts. In the fi nal stanza, Fresno State received four kills from outside hitter Zana Bowens and three from then-senior middle blocker Lauren Albertson on their way to the win. On defense, Humphrey posted a match high 11 blocks, and libero Kimberly Vaio logged 16 digs. PRESEASON POLL BUSTER Fresno State volleyball was picked eighth by Mountain West head coaches in the annual preseason poll in mid-august. Last year s champion Colorado State led the poll with 97 points, and received seven of the 11 fi rst-place votes. New Mexico followed in second place with 91 points, and received the other four fi rst-place votes. The upper half of the conference picks also included Utah State (third, 81), San Diego State (fourth, 73), Wyoming (fi fth, 55) and Boise State (sixth, 54). UNLV (seventh, 50) stood just ahead of Fresno State, and was followed by Air Force (ninth, 31), San Jose State (10th, 21) and Nevada (11th, 12). In 2014, the `Dogs will look to match or better its preseason pick for the sixth time since 2008 under Netherby-Sewell after achieving the feat in 13 (preseason - sixth / fi nal - fourth), `12 fourth / fourth), 11 (fi fth / fourth), 09 (sixth / fourth) and 08 (eighth / eighth) SEASON WRAP-UP Last year, the Fresno State volleyball team (17-15, 11-9) capped its second season of Mountain West play with its fi rst pair of back-to-back winning seasons since 2003 and `04, and tied for fourth place in the MW Conference - two places better than its MW Preseason Coaches Poll position. The `Dogs featured one of its greatest senior classes, led by 2013 All-MW outside hitters Marissa Brand and Korrin Wild. Brand was also one of the team s most decorated in the classroom as the eight-time Dean s List pick received her third CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District honor. The talented squad was also one of its most balanced as 12 of the 13 players on the roster at season s end played at least 18 matches, and all three newcomers played key roles. Then-senior right side hitter and transfer Holly Franks was selected as the MW Newcomer of the Year; freshman libero Maggie Eppright sported the MW s top digs per set average among underclassmen (3.40 p/s); and freshman setter Brooke Legaux played the fi nal 18 matches of the year as the team unveiled a 6-2 offense. AND THE HONOR GOES TO... At the conclusion of the season, senior outside hitters Marissa Brand and Korrin Wild picked up their fi rst MW All-Conference laurels, while senior right side hitter Holly Franks became the program s fi rst MW Newcomer of the Year recipient. The duo of Brand and Wild were tabbed to the 17-person MW All-Conference Team selected by conference head coaches, and made the `Dogs one of four teams in the 11- team league that sported multiple selections. In prior years, Wild and Brand received All-WAC Second-Team honorees in 2011 and 2010, respectively, while Franks received her first league-based laurel after playing the 2009, `10 and `11 seasons for Cal Poly. The pair of honors raised head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell s total of all-league honors to eight since 2009 and 56 overall for the program since its fi rst selection in Other prior all-league nods in her tenure went to Brianna Clarke (1st Team-2011; 2nd Team- 2009, `10) and Kelly Leonardo (2nd Team-2009). REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS Senior middle blocker Maci Murdock is easy to spot atop the Bulldog career hitting charts with her.329 hitting mark (.12 better than 1992 Olympian Ruth Lawanson (.317)). The Turlock, Calif., native also ranks top 10 on career lists for block assists (eighth, 264) GoBulldogs.com Facebook: FresnoStateVB AROUND THE MOUNTAIN WEST 2014 PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1. Season-wise, Murdock s.350 hitting mark from 2013 ranked third-best in school history behind Brianna Clarke s totals from 2010 and `11 (.365 /.351), and Murdock also stood ninth most sets played (122). On defense, senior Christina Lee ranks sixth in career digs (1,111), not far behind former teammate Korrin Wild (fifth, 1,203). Another team category leader in libero Maggie Eppright - posted the secondbest digs mark ever among Bulldog freshman (391) - 50 behind Tricia Tuley s school record (441, 1993). SKED CRED The `Dogs will face a challenging regular season slate in 2014 that features trips to four time zones and contests vs. foes from 10 different conferences (America East, Big East, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Ivy, Mountain West, Northeast, Sun Belt and WAC) Among the team s 24 opponents this fall, three are NCAA Tournament returnees - returning MW champion Colorado State, returning America East Tournament champion New Hampshire and UC Santa Barbara - and they sported RPI ratings of 23, 199 and 62 at the end of last season. Four more of Fresno State s foes this fall also sported top-100 RPI positions at the end of New Mexico (68), Long Beach State (80), Utah State (81) and SDSU (89). This season s conference schedule will have two less matches than last year so that teams could schedule more non-conference dates during the early season. Otherwise, Fresno State will play home and away matches vs. nine of its 10 MW foes, and one match against New Mexico (in Fresno) and Air Force (at Colorado Springs). In the 2014 AVCA preseason poll, four Fresno State foes stood top 25 or received votes - No. 18 Colorado State, No. 34 UCSB, No. 38 Long Beach State and No. 39 New Mexico. ALL-TOURNAMENT PROPS Last fall, senior middle blocker Maci Murdock was one of four team members (and the only returnee in 2014) that staked all-tournament honors in the non-conference slate, thanks to her performance in the Fresno State Classic. In prior years, she also won a pair of honors in 2012 at Colorado and UTEP; while senior libero Christina Lee was a San Diego All-Tournament selection in `12. HEAD OF THE CLASS Team-wise this past summer, the `Dogs received the American Volleyball Coaches (AVCA) Academic Team Award for the fi fth straight season for their combined grade point average for the academic year. Fresno State was the only Mountain West Conference team and one of fi ve from California of the 109 NCAA Division 1 programs honored nationally (with Pacifi c, Stanford, San Francisco and St. Mary s). Individually last fall, the Dogs 13-person roster led the league in Academic All-MW accolades as it had 12 players maintain a 3.0 minimum GPA in the fall and played in 50 percent of the contests. All-MW choice and senior outside hitter Marissa Brand was equally up to par with her third straight Capital One Academic All-District 8 honor. The Cypress, Calif., native won her fi rst honor in 2011 with teammate Cecilia Agraz - the latter being the fi rst two-time honoree in the program history (2011, 1st Team; 2010, 2nd Team) and the Bulldogs fi rst Academic All-American (2011). GOLDEN STATE PRIDE With 11 of the team s 14 players from California, it s again easy to spot a large cheering section of family and friends at `Dog matches this year. Four Bulldogs are within two hours of Fresno - freshman middle blocker Lauren Torres (Visalia, 40 miles) and defensive specialist Jacqueline Hutcheson (Exeter, 44 miles), redshirt freshman outside hitter Haylee Roberts (80 miles) and senior middle blocker GoBulldogs.com Facebook: FresnoStateVB 2014 Fresno State Volleyball

5 2014 Fresno State Volleyball Notes Maci Murdock (Turlock, 88 miles), Seven other Dogs are from the area and within 300 miles - sophomore libero Maggie Eppright (San Luis Obispo, 138), senior middle blocker Katie Pearson & redshirt junior right side hitter Molly Pearson (San Jose, 152), senior libero Christina Lee (San Francisco, 188), junior outside hitter Zana Bowens (Long Beach, 242), sophomore setter Brooke Legaux (Mission Viejo, 266) and freshman outside hitter Taylor Brubaker (290 miles). The team s 12th, 13th and 14th members - freshman Carly Scarbrough, senior outside hitter Jaimee-Lee Morrow and junior setter Jelena Jovanovic - unfortunately ruin the team average. Jovanovic s home in Belgrade is approximately 6,275 miles from Fresno, and Morrow s home in Mooroolbark, Australia (pron. MERL-bark, and located near Melbourne) is 7,968 miles away. DOUBLE YOUR FUN Bulldog fans and foes will again see double this season with the squad sporting a pair of strikingly similar faces in the front row - senior middle blocker Katie Pearson and redshirt junior right side hitter Molly Pearson. The identical twins matriculated from Presentation High School in San Jose, and played 20 and 18 matches last season. A redshirt junior and starter in six matches in 2013, Molly posted a team season high HEAD COACH PROFILE: LAUREN NETHERBY-SEWELL Lauren Netherby-Sewell begins her seventh season with the Bulldogs focused on continuing the program s ascent into the national elite. In return, the team s exciting style of play has already attracted record crowds to the Save Mart Center her first fi ve seasons. Under her leadership, the Dogs enjoyed their fi rst back to back winning seasons in 2012 (18-13) and 13 (17-15) since 2003 and 04 (21-7, 15-13), while its RPI ratings (90 / 100) were also best in the same era. Similarly, after fi nishing fourth for the third straight year in 2013, the squad has enjoyed top-four league fi nishes for three straight years for the fi rst time since In her tenure, the Dogs have featured a host of all-conference individual honorees, including four-time all-league pick Brianna Clarke, Barbara Alcantara, Kelly Leonardo and Baylee Platt, and 2013 s repeat selections Marissa Brand and Korrin Wild. Many of the program s largest crowds have keyed the program s resurgence, including a crowd of 2,664 vs. Fresno Pacific in In 2009, the team attracted its highest-ever home attendance total (18,529), and its per match averages in 2009 (1,684) and 2008 (1,200) both ranked top 30 nationally. Her team has also excelled in the classroom, Cecilia Agraz became the program s fi rst Academic All-American.
