Eastern enters the weekend at 9-19 overall and 6-11 in Ohio Valley Conference action. The Golden Eagles are 4-22 overall and sit in last place in the league at JSU, who will play at SIUE on Friday, enter the weekend at 9-17 and 7-9. Earlier in the season the Panthers defeated both TTU and JSU on the road, so Eastern will look for a season sweep of both league foes this weekend. The 2011 campaign marks the 30th season that Eastern Illinois volleyball has competed at the NCAA Division I level. Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Penrod leads all Golden Eagles with 259 kills for a 3.01 kills-perset mark, while freshman Ellen Conti is a close second with 220 total put-aways. Off 195 kills, junior middle blocker Kelsey Gray sports the top attack at.237, and also leads the net defense with 83 total blocks, including an impressive 30 solo stuffs. Junior setter Madison Comperry has dished out 564 assists, while sophomore libero Allison May has upped 450 attacks and owns TTU s best service game with 26 aces. TTU are led on the court by long-time coach John Blair, now in his ninth season as skipper of the Golden Eagles.

THE SERIES HISTORY VERSUS TTU & JSU Against TTU, the Panthers enjoy a seven-match lead in the all-time series as the two league foes will meet for the 36th time on the volleyball court this weekend. EIU has won 21 matchups to 14 for the Golden Eagles. The last two seasons, EIU and TTU have actually split the regular-season meetings. Against JSU, however, finds the Gamecocks owning a sizeable 13-3 all-time series advantage. That included winning 12 straight from 2005 thru the 2010 campaign. The Panthers were finally able to break that losing streak, however, with a thrilling 3-2 win at Jacksonville State earlier this year. In fact, that win on October 14 marks the first Panther victory on the Gamecock s home court since JSU joined the OVC back in A CAREER NIGHT VERSUS MURRAY STATE Sophomore outside hitter Reynae Hutchinson nailed 27 kills against the Racers this past Tuesday, marking a new career-high for the Mattoon native, while her 65 attacks also set a new personal best. The 27 put-downs by Hutchinson tied the ninth best single-match mark by a Panther during the OVC era. ALBERS & WALLACE MOVE UP IN THE PANTHER RECORD BOOK Seniors Chrissie Albers and Brittany Wallace continue to climb in their respective career stat categories in the EIU record books. In just three seasons as a Panther, Albers already sports the fourth highest assist mark of 2,248 by a setter during EIU s years in the OVC (1996-Present). In overall Division I records, Albers ranks 7th all-time. Wallace, meanwhile, owns the fifth best dig mark by a Panther in all of Division I with 1,422 ups, and will become the top full-time libero in a Panther uniform as she ranks 4th best during the OVC era. The collegiate position of libero began prior to the start of the 2002 season. RECAPPING THE HEARTBREAKING FIVE-SET ROAD LOSS AT MURRAY STATE A career-high kill tally by sophomore Reynae Hutchinson and double-digit kills by two additional Panthers wasn t enough as Eastern Illinois dropped a five-set OVC match (21-25, 30-28, 25-20, 24-26, 10-15) at Murray State last Tuesday. The Panthers fell to 9-19 overall and 6-11 in league as the loss marked the second straight five-set heartbreaker for EIU, following a five-frame defeat at EKU last Saturday. Hutchinson collected 27 kills on the night to top her previous career-high set as a freshman last season. Price became the 10th head coach in EIU volleyball history. Under her leadership, the 2010 squad had the best start to a season in four years enroute to capturing runner-up and third place finishes at early-season Harvard and Michigan State invitatoinals, respectively. Two Panthers earned post-season All-OVC honors, and three different players were tabbed with all-tourney kudos as well. A former senior player on the 2007 NCAA National Championship squad at Penn State, Price became one of the youngest volleyball coaches to currently run an NCAA Division I squad. Prior to arriving in Charleston in 2009, the Michigan native worked as an assistant at Centenary College. In her four seasons at Penn State, Price competed in a variety of positions, which included playing on the right side attack, as defensive specialist and some libero work. Some of her career awards included AVCA Honorable Mention All-Mideast Region, Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Stanford Invitational Most Valuable Player, Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team, and Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. In addition to the 2007 NCAA title, the Nittany Lions also captured the Big Ten championship all four years that she was a member of the squad.

The 15 put-aways by Berens tied the middle hitter s career mark. Senior setter Chrissie Albers dished out a season-best 61 assists, and with the addition of 12 digs notched her 19th such duo-duo performance in her EIU career. She also blocked six Racer shots to tie her career mark. Defensively, senior libero Brittany Wallace led all Panthers with 19 digs, while sophomore Stephanie Arnold had a fine game at the net with eight total blocks, which also tied her career mark. Team-wise, EIU out-paced the Racers in kills (70 to 68), attacks (201 to 181), aces (four to two), blocks (12.0 to 9.5), and points (86.0 to 79.5). A DOUBLE-DOUBLE THREAT Three Panther hitters have combined for 19 kill-dig double-doubles this season. Sophomore Reynae Hutchinson leads the team with 12 on the year, which included nabbing four straight duo-duo performances against UTM, JSU, TTU and UIC. She now has 15 career double-doubles to her name, with the most recent coming off a career-high 27 kills and the addition of 14 digs in the Panthers tough five-set loss at Murray State. Newcomer Katie Kirby has four such honors in her young Panther career. Junior Emily Franklin, meanwhile, earned her third Eastern double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs in a four-set non-conference home win over instate rival Illinois-Chicago. WALLACE SHINES IN THE BACK COURT Coming two digs shy of her career high, senior libero Brittany Wallace recorded a season-high 26 digs as she led all players on the court versus Illinois-Chicago a week or so ago. For the season she has 13 matches with 15 or more digs. While in her career, she has notched 44 such performances. She leads all Panthers with 359 ups for a 3.63 digs-per-set mark, ranking 10th best in the OVC. For her career, the four-year starter ranks in the Top 5 for all-time digs with 1,422 and will most assuredly finish her EIU career as the best full-time Panther libero during Eastern s membership in the OVC (1996-present). VOLLEYBALL RECENTLY HOSTED THE 30-YEAR PANTHER CELEBRATION As Eastern Illinois celebrates its 30th season of NCAA Division I volleyball this year, the athletic department hosted a reunion weekend during the EIU Homecoming festivities last weekend, as over 45 former EIU volleyball student-athletes from all eras returned to partake in the action. Attendees enjoyed a brunch, football game and watched the Panthers take on OVC rival Austin Peay, before being honored at the break of the match in front of nice crowd of over 500. Former members of various championship squads -- the 1982 squad (first to compete in NCAA Division I), the 1994 Mid-Continent West Division champions, the 1998 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champions, the 2001 OVC Tournament champion and NCAA participant, and the 2004 OVC regular-season co-champions -- were recognized. Also, the recipient of the newly endowed Volleyball Alumni Scholarship was announced and awarded to current senior libero Brittany Wallace. The scholarship will be given yearly to an upperclassman with a 3.50 or higher GPA who also exhibit excellent leadership and work ethics in addition to their academic and athletic honors. A selection committee has been created to determine the recipient of this scholarship each season. KIRBY & FRANKLIN EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS Thus far this year, junior Emily Franklin has twice represented the Panthers on the respective Louisville and Indiana All-Tourney squads, while newcomer Katie Kirby earned the same honor at the season-opening Indiana State Classic team. ALBERS & HUTCHINSON EARN PRESEASON HONORS EIU had two players earn a spot on the Preseason All-OVC team as senior setter Chrissie Albers and sophomore outside hitter Reynae Hutchinson each received league honors. A native of Springfield, Albers was the lone setter to be named to the 14-member preseason squad. Last season, she led the entire OVC in assists with her assist-per-set average tying as the fourth best single-season mark by a Panther in school history. Hutchinson, from nearby Mattoon, returns following a standout freshman season last fall where she finished with 237 kills (2.72 kps) off a.201 attack mark to be named to the OVC All-Newcomer squad.
