TTU, but lost to JSU & SEMO; key losses to Valparaiso, North Carolina State, Pepperdine, & Cal State Fullerton PANTHERS DROP HOME OVC OPENER LAST NIGHT: Despite playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd of over 500 EIU fans, the Panthers were unable to get past visiting Morehead State, as the Eagles won a four-set affair (12-25, 25-22, 14-25, 17-25), dropping the Panthers to 7-6 on the season and 0-1 in early OVC action. Morehead State, the preseason league favorite, improved to 9-6 and 3-0. SCOUTING THE OTHER EASTERN SQUAD: EKU comes to town with a 2-10 overall mark and 1-2 OVC record, as the Colonels dropped a five-set heartbreaker at SEMO last evening despite enjoying an early 2-0 match lead. Just like Morehead State last night, EKU comes in having with a winless record in road matches. Freshman Ashley Edmond leads the attack with 151 kills (3.36 kps), while the outside hitter also has a team-high nine aces and sports the third best block total with 18. Senior Lauren Snyder is also averaging over three kills per set with 112 total put-aways (3.03 kps). Fellow senior Autumn Harms is a close third with 90 total kills (2.00 kps), while stuffing 22 total attacks. Defensively, long-time libero Abby O Connor leads with 271 total ups (6.02 dps) and has the second best ace total with eight. Junior Hannah Groudle is a presence at the net for the Colonels, with 24 total roofs, while senior setter Kate Hendle has dished out 242 (8.64 aps) assists so far this season. THE EASTERN/EASTERN SERIES: EIU owns a all-time Division I series advantage over the Colonels, but have actually lost five straight to EKU, including a five-set thriller last year in the Panthers season finale. That match was actually played on neutral territory on the campus of the University of Evansville as the contest was rescheduled following the cancellation of the regularly scheduled EIU home IF THE PANTHERS SWEEP TONIGHT... PANTHERS RANKED IN TOP FIVE IN SIX OF SEVEN OVC STAT CATEGORIES: The Panthers have positioned themselves into several Top Five statistical team listings as released by the OVC office this past Monday. For the third straight week, EIU owned the top league mark for blocks, while also sporting the third best mark for hitting, assists, and kills. EIU was also listed fourth for opponent hitting percentage and fifth in total aces. FORMER PANTHER STANDOUT ERICA GERTH EARNS HALL OF FAME HONOR: Earlier today, one of the Panthers top volleyball players of all-time, Erica Gerth Kelly ( ) earned the prestigious honor of being inducted into the EI Club Hall of Fame and was honored at today s football game as well. The former OVC Player of the Year not only left her mark in the Panther record books, helping EIU capture the 2004 OVC regular-season title, but she continues to lead various stat categories. The list includes owning top marks for career kills (1774), attempts (4850), and digs (1666), while placing third for all-time aces (171). She is also still listed in four single-match highs while continuing to rank in the OVC record books for attempts and kills, at third and fifth all-time, respectively. Also a killer in the classroom, Gerth was named an Academic All- America honoree twice while also earning three OVC Medal ERICA GERTH of Honor awards. We also welcome several former members of the 2004 championship squad who are also in attendance tonight.
