THIS IS... THE NATION S NEWEST SPORT The NCAA added Beach Volleyball to its list of championship sports in It became the 90 th and newest national championship sport recognized by the NCAA. The Seminoles reached the finals at the inaugural NCAA Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., in May 2016, finishing with a school-record 32 wins as the national runner-ups. Florida State introduced what was then called sand volleyball as its 20 th varsity sport in the spring of 2012 and competed as an emerging NCAA sport for four seasons. The sport changed names from sand to beach volleyball as it is known as the latter at all other levels of play throughout the world. Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 64 colleges and universities sponsoring the sport as of January AN ELITE PROGRAM Since the inception of the program in 2012, Florida State advanced to the AVCA Championships in each of its first five seasons and the first two NCAA Championships in 2016 and The Seminoles finished as the national runner-up in 2014, falling to Pepperdine, 3-2, in the finals. FSU registered a pair of top-3 finishes at the AVCA Championships in 2012 and Florida State is one of just two beach volleyball programs (along with Pepperdine) to have played in every AVCA/NCAA Championships ( ). Since 2012, FSU has been recognized with 11 AVCA Beach All-America honors from eight different players. The Seminoles eight All-Americans are tied for the third most nationally. One of those ranked wins came against then-no. 2 Southern Cal in Los Angeles, as the Seminoles snapped the Women of Troy s 19-match home win streak. The Noles took down No. 2 Pepperdine for the first time in school history, 3-2, in Tallahassee during the 2017 season. FSU earned the No. 1 overall seed at the 2016 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship after claiming the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) conference title. The Seminoles gathered their second consecutive CCSA Conference title in 2017 as they took down No. 10 FIU. NOLES IN CCSA Florida State became a charter member of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association for beach volleyball only for prior to the start of the 2016 season. The Coastal Collegiate Sports Association expanded to 10 members in 2017, welcoming College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington to a league that also includes Florida State, UAB, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Georgia State, LSU, South Carolina and Tulane. Florida State is the only school to sponsor beach volleyball in the Atlantic Coast Conference. ATTRACTING TOP TALENT Third-year head coach Brooke Niles earned third team All-America honors in indoor volleyball at UC Santa Barbara before moving on to a successful professional beach volleyball career. She was named 2009 AVP Beach Defensive Player of the Year and spent four seasons as a member of the USA Beach National Team. Niles was named the 2016 AVCA Coach of the Year as she piloted the Seminoles to a school-record 32 dual-match victories, the CCSA league championship and a No. 1 seed in the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship. Assistant coach Raul Papaleo has a wealth of experience both internationally and domestically as an indoor and beach volleyball coach. As head coach, he led American University in Bayamon, Puerto Rico to a runner up finish in the Puerto Rican National Championship. During his first season as an assistant at FSU he helped lead the Noles to 29 wins and their second straight CCSA title. FSU Beach Volleyball has historically attracted some of the nation s best players to the program. Among those include 2016 AVCA All-American Sarah Putt, who transferred to FSU and will begin play in the campaign and 2016 CCSA Freshman of the year Francesca Goncalves. New to the team in 2018 is volunteer assistant coach Nick Lucena. 5 SEMINOLE BEACH VOLLEYBALL COURTS Completed in 2011, the Seminole Beach Volleyball courts was one of the first facilities to be built specifically for collegiate beach volleyball. Located north of the Seminole Soccer Complex and JoAnne Graf Field between Mike Long Track and the Spirit Way Parking Garage, the facility is wrapped in Florida State University graphics and logos highlighting the enormous success of the FSU Beach Volleyball team during the sport s first six years. The Seminole Beach Volleyball Courts remain one of the premier facilities in the nation. There are three entrances where patrons can enter the facility, with seating for approximately 150 people on the bleachers at sand level. The multi-level parking garage adjacent to the courts can also be used for spectator viewing. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs to the event as well. The courts are also equipped with permanent lighting to allow matches to be played at night. The Seminole Beach Volleyball Courts were built using two types of sand. The lower level of sand is more powdery to allow precipitation to filter through to the drainage system. The upper level of sand is more dense, allowing student-athletes a competitive playing surface each time out. 4 YEAR-BY-YEAR HOME RECORD 2012: 2013: 2014: 2015: 2016: 2017: ALL-TIME HOME RECORD 26-1

BEACH VOLLEYBALL LOCKER ROOM Tully Gymnasium is the home of the Florida State beach volleyball team, housing the coaches offices, team lounge and locker room. Renovations to the Seminoles new locker room were completed in January of 2016 thanks to the support of the FSU Athletics Department and Seminole Boosters. The locker room features individual lockers for each studentathlete identified with their own personal name plate, individual shower stalls and bathrooms. The lockers include plenty of storage for both hanging clothes and folded items along with power outlets that also feature USB ports. The team lounge provides amble space to hold team meetings, watch film or to give the beach volleyball student-athletes a quiet place to study. The lounge is equipped with a 64 inch HD-television screen, couches and chairs for plenty of comfort. A satellite workout facility is located just outside the beach volleyball office in Tully Gym featuring state-of-the-art equipment. The Tully Gym weight room is a clean and spacious 4,500 square foot facility equipped with mondo-rubber flooring, 10 squat racks, and houses 10 platforms for Olympic lifting. With an ipad on every rack and a change of facility design, Florida State continues to improve each of its strength and conditioning facilities. 5

SEMINOLE ALL-AMERICANS Florida State Beach Volleyball has a proud tradition of excellence, accumulating 11 AVCA All-American recognitions among 8 different players, including two in Leigh Andrew and Brooke Kuhlman. 2012, , 2013, THE CCSA The FSU Beach Volleyball program joined the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) as a charter member prior to the spring 2016 season. CCSA Beach Volleyball began play in the spring of 2016 with eight founding members: University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Florida State University, Georgia State University, Louisiana State University (LSU), the University of South Carolina and Tulane University. The CCSA announced the addition of College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington to the sport of beach volleyball, expanding the conference to 10 members for the spring 2017 championship. The CCSA, which was formerly known as the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association at the Division I level, rebranded to include beach volleyball for the upcoming season. Beach Volleyball became the 90th championship sponsored by the NCAA in after being officially recognized as an NCAA sport for The first NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama, was hosted by CCSA member UAB. The creation of CCSA Beach Volleyball provides student-athletes the opportunity to compete for conference honors and championships. The NCAA does not currently offer automatic qualification (AQ) into the beach volleyball championship for conference winners (a two-year championship history is required), but the CCSA will be in position to qualify for an AQ should they be offered in The CCSA formed in 2007 as a partnership among swimming and diving programs in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Big South Conference, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southern Conference to provide championship opportunities for men s and women s swimming and diving student-athletes. Conference growth in swimming and diving now shows 15 institutions with competitors from eight separate Division I multisport conferences. With the addition of beach volleyball, the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association now has 22 member institutions with participants from 11 different NCAA Division I multisport conferences.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW The phrase National Championship is something the Florida State beach volleyball team isn t afraid to throw around this season. After coming so close to the championship for the second year in a row and taking home another conference title in 2017, the Seminoles have upped the pressure and set their sights on the 2018 National Championship. It s something we want to remind ourselves every day to work for, head coach Brooke Niles said. They ve shown a lot of discipline in practice and they definitely have that goal on their minds. In just two seasons at the helm, Niles has set a number of records and coached some of the best teams the program has ever seen, but she isn t even close to being done. Although the team is looking forward to its ultimate goal of claiming the championship, right now the Seminoles are just looking forward to getting the season started. They re just ready to compete, Niles said. We have one of the longest off-seasons of any sport, so by the time preseason training is over and we compete in our first scrimmage it s been five and a half weeks. So I think they re just ready to test themselves against competition and really get the season going. Expectations remain high for the team heading into the 2018 season, as the Seminoles will see a challenging schedule to prepare for what they hope is a deep postseason run. Florida State opens the season in DeLand, Fla., at the Stetson Spring Fling, where it will face the hosting Hatters and three CCSA op- ponents Florida Atlantic, South Carolina and Georgia State. The Seminoles then return home for the earliest home event the team has ever seen, hosting St. Petersburg College, Stetson and conference opponent College of Charleston in the Hampton Inn Capitol-University Invitational. The challenging schedule takes FSU out to Southern California for the East Meets West Challenge, where the team will face the four other top-5 opponents Hawaii, Pepperdine, UCLA and USC. The Seminoles stay in California to take on Pepperdine again, along with Long Beach State and LMU in a set of midweek matches. The Seminoles will then stay in Florida for the Hickory Point Lake Bash in Tavares and a Garnet and Gold scrimmage at home on March 24, before heading south for FIU s Surf & Turf Invitational in South Beach Miami. FSU will then host its third and final home event of the season, taking on FAU, UNC Wilmington, TCU, UAB and Georgia State in the Seminole Beach Battle in April. The regular season will conclude in Baton Rouge at LSU s Battle on the Bayou, where the Noles will see conference opponents Georgia State and LSU, along with Jacksonville State and New Orleans before heading into the postseason. Niles will return 14 letterwinners this season, as well as six of the nation s top recruits and one indoor graduate transfer. Another major addition for the Seminoles this season is Volunteer Assistant Coach Nick Lucena. Lucena returns to his alma mater in the midst of a highly successful career on the professional circuit. Since graduating from FSU in 2003, Lucena has picked up 17 overall first place finishes, including nine AVP gold medals and eight international titles. Alongside partner Phil Dalhausser, the duo finished fifth in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in It s kind of surreal having an Olympian on the court with you, said sophomore Francesca Goncalves. He sees things that other people just don t see, and his input is very honest. He will just tell you how it is. We need that honesty is this game because we need to fix our weaknesses, and I think he is here to take us to the next level. On the courts, the Seminoles will look to 9

2018 SEASON PREVIEW seniors Vanessa Freire and Tory Paranagua to lead the team this season, after the duo clinched the 2017 CCSA Championship match and claimed the CCSA Tournament MVP title as a pair. Paranagua led the team with a 30-8 record last season, giving her an career record the eighth-most in program history. Freire sits right behind her classmate with a 29-5 record n 2017 the second-most on the team and a career record, which is good for the ninth-most in program history. Although the seniors will be expected to lead the team, an outstanding season from junior Brooke Kuhlman earns her a spot at the top of the lineup. Kuhlman became FSU s eighth AVCA All-American last season after going with partner Leigh Andrew. The two defeated 18 ranked opponents and recorded the match point in FSU s first win over Pepperdine. Her successful sophomore season also landed her a DiG Magazine All-American honor and a spot on the All-CCSA First Team. Returning for her sophomore season is FSU s 2017 breakout star Francesca Goncalves. In her freshman campaign, Goncalves picked up 29 wins on her way to becoming the CCSA Freshman of the Year, the DiG Magazine Freshman of the Year, as well as earing a DiG Magazine All-American honor and a spot on the CCSA All-Tournament Team. Her 29-7 record was good for the second-most on the team and the 16th-most by an individual in a single season. We re definitely going to rely on our experience this year, Niles said. But we also have a crop of really athletic freshmen that came in. So we re going to try to combine the two and see where that takes us. While all six freshmen this season are bound to make an impact for the Noles on the sand, one local name stands out the most Tallahassee s own Madison Fitzpatrick. Her success as both an athlete and a student earned Fitzpatrick Lincoln High School s Trojan of the Year award and the Wendy s Heisman award in 2017, and shortly after graduation she was named an AVCA High School Beach All-American. In the past we ve had a lot of great experience on this team, and this program is a top team for a reason, Niles said. Part of that is what we do on the recruiting side and then how we train them as athletes when they re here. I m just excited to put all these tools together. Also stepping onto the sand for the first time this season for the Seminoles will be redshirt sophomore Sara Putt and graduate transfer Lauren Anderson. A transfer from Stetson, Putt became an AVCA All-American as a freshman in 2016, going 32-3 at the No. 1 position to claim the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year honor. Anderson comes to the Seminoles after a four-year indoor career at Utah State and Pittsburgh. She finished her senior campaign ranked nationally in six major statistical categories and set a number of USU records. With some of the most talent the program has seen on one roster, FSU is hoping to finalize its starting lineup this Saturday, February 17 at the Garnet and Gold scrimmage in Jacksonville Beach. The Seminoles play on the sand in between 6th and 7th Ave. North, and first serve is set for noon. After enduring a long off-season and training harder than they ever have before, the team is eager to get back in the sand and start competing. Although it is important to focus on each opponent individually, the team has no plans to stop talking about that National Championship title. We have a certain standard we hold ourselves up to, Niles said. I think other programs are different in that they just want to get someplace or get a certain amount of wins. We know what we re capable of, and I don t think there s anything wrong with voicing those opinions. 10

HEAD COACH BROOKE NILES T h i r d Season UC Santa Barbara (2003) FSU RECORD: COLLEGIATE RECORD: CAREER RECORD: Florida State University athletics announced the hiring of U.S. beach volleyball professional Brooke Niles as the Seminoles beach volleyball head coach on June 16, Niles, a California native who earned All-America honors as a player, has coached at the collegiate, junior college, club and high school levels working with both indoor and sand volleyball teams. In 2016, Niles led the Seminoles to unprecedented heights during the program s first season as an official NCAA Championship sport. Her first year in Tallahassee was highlighted by a series of program firsts including a school-record for dual-match victories (32), a conference championship, the top-seed in the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship and a national runner-up finish. Florida State hit the ground running under Niles, winning its first 14 matches, all on the road, with eight of those victories coming against ranked foes including five ranked in the top-10. One of those wins came against then-no. 2 Southern California in Los Angeles as the Seminoles snapped the Women of Troy s 19-match home win streak. FSU went on to earn the No. 1 overall seed at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship after claiming the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference title. The Seminoles finished the 2016 campaign as the national runner-up at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. after posting a 3-2 record at the tournament. FSU went on to set the single-season school record for victories in a season with 32 and ranked in the Top 5 of the AVCA national poll all year. Along with their 14-match win streak, the Seminoles also put together a school-record 17-match win streak which saw Florida State outscore the opposition At season s end, Florida State registered 19 victories over ranked schools, while posting an 11-3 mark against teams ranked in the Top 10. In her second year under the helm Niles continued the winning tradition of Florida State beach volleyball. The team finished with the second most wins in school history and the third most in the country (29). Niles and the Noles secured back-to-back CCSA Championships after they defeated FIU 3-0 in 34 minutes. Florida State reached their second consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship appearance and sixth straight post season appearance, tied for most of any school. The Seminoles finished the 2017 season in fourth place at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shore, Ala. after going 2-2 at the tournament. The Noles defeated a school record 22 ranked teams during the 2017 season, including 13 wins over top-10 teams and three over top-5 teams. The 2017 season saw the Garnet and Gold defeat Pepperdine for the first time in school history as they took down the second-ranked wave in Tallahassee. Under Niles, Florida State garnered two AVCA All-Americans, six CCSA All- Conference selections, a league-best three student-athletes named to the CCSA All-Academic team in 2016, the CCSA Scholar Athlete of the Year (Macy Jerger) in 2017, the CCSA Pair of the Year in 2016 (Julie Brown/Jace Pardon) and 10 Seminoles who earned a spot on the CCSA Academic Honor Roll. Niles was recognized for her outstanding effort in her first season at the helm of the Seminole beach volleyball program as she was named National Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Niles, who earned a law and society degree from UC Santa Barbara in 2003, was a third-team All-American while playing for the Gauchos where she also was a three-time All-Big West selection and named conference freshman of the year. Following her playing career at UCSB, Niles spent three years as an assistant indoor coach at her alma mater before beginning a successful professional beach volleyball career in 2007 that saw her win numerous pro tournaments along with being named the AVP Beach Defensive Player of the Year in While climbing to a Top 5 ranking in the National Volleyball Beach League and spending as a member of the USA Beach National Team, Niles was a first alternate for the USA 2012 London Olympic Beach National team. The Woodland Hills native returned to coaching in 2010 at Oxnard Junior College with the indoor team. In 2012, she began coaching professional beach volleyball teams competing on the FIVB World Tour from the USA, Costa Rica and the Netherlands. Most recently Niles coached at Mira Costa High School in California and she was the director, founder and head coach of The Beach Team Club in Hermosa. I m very excited that Brooke joined our volleyball family, said FSU Volleyball Head Coach Chris Poole. She played beach volleyball and indoor volleyball at the highest level. She has also coached indoor volleyball at a Top 10 level in the NCAA Division I and she has coached and trained with some of the best beach players in the world. The references we got from National Team level players, coaches, and Gold Medalists were outstanding. She had a very impressive resume and made an impact on everyone during her visit. Brooke will lead the squad in a fantastic way and help the ladies grow and learn in so many ways, said Kerri Walsh, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball. Her competitiveness is truly an asset as it leads her to work hard and push for excellence. She practices what she preaches and this to me is what coaching/teaching is all about. Niles is married to Nick Lucena, a Florida State graduate, professional beach volleyball player on the AVP Tour and Olympian in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. They have two sons, Gunnar and Cole. 14 Florida State beach volleyball head coach Brooke Niles announced the hiring of Nick Lucena as a volunteer assistant coach on Sept. 15. Lucena returns to his alma mater from the professional circuit, where he has received numerous accolades over his 16-year career. Most recently, Lucena and Dalhausser won their third gold medal of the 2017 FIVB season at the World Tour Finals. This was the pair s eighth FIVB gold medal and 16th podium finish. Entering the 2017 season, Lucena owned the second-longest active streak of reaching the semifinals, having done so at least once each year since Lucena and Dalhausser first paired up in 2003, and reunited in 2015 on the pro circuit. Just a year later, the pair qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as a No. 3 seed, finishing fifth after being eliminated in the quarterfinals. The same season, the pair earned eight international medals, which was the most on the Tour. They played in four AVP events, winning twice, and only losing three matches during the season due to injury forfeits. In their three AVP tournaments together in 2015, Lucena and Dalhausser lost just two matches. They finished second, then won in Manhattan Beach, then placed third. Lucena ended the year with the most kills per set on Tour (7.34) and was fifth in digs per set (4.88). On the FIVB Tour Lucena and Fuerbringer advanced from four qualifiers in the first six events, with a best of fifth place twice, before winning silver in the Klagenfurt Grand Slam. That event marked the first ever FIVB semifinal for Lucena. The duo ended their season with a bronze medal in The Hague. Lucena and Fuerbringer played in 14 FIVB events in 2011, winning a silver medal in Quebec after knocking off three straight teams seeded sixth or higher. The duo placed ninth in the World Championships in Rome, and ended the season with a fourth-place finish. They were the ninth-ranked team in the FIVB season points. In 2013, Lucena teamed with Theo Brunner and found some success, winning at Huntington Beach and ending the season with five top-3 finishes. Lucena has also found success internationally with sixteen top-5 finishes in FIVB competition. Lucena made his AVP main draw debut in 2003 at Belmar, where he partnered with Dalhausser once again. In 2004, the pair started out the season with a seventh place finish in Ft. Lauderdale. In Huntington Beach they advanced to the first semifinal after knocking off top seeded Karch Kiraly and Mike Lambert, as well as both U.S. Olympic teams.
