We have enjoyed working with you and look forward to doing so again during the 2014 season. This team guide has been prepared to assist you in your coverage of the Buckeyes. Every effort has been made to ensure both its accurateness and its thoroughness. Hopefully, this publication will allow you to glean more information about all aspects of the Ohio State volleyball program and The Ohio State University. This publication also contains important information relative to interviews with Ohio State players and coaches, as well as instructions for applying for credentials. Any questions in either area should be directed to Kyle Kuhlman at or kuhlman.137@osu.edu. Again, thank you for your coverage of Ohio State s 36 varsity teams. CREDENTIAL REQUESTS In order to qualify for a credential, an applicant must represent the recognized news organization requesting credentials. Please direct all credential requests to Kyle Kuhlman, assistant athletics communications director. requests to: kuhlman.137@osu.edu. Confirmation of your request will be made upon receipt. Credentials are for adult use only and are non-transferrable. WEB SITES Media credentials are issued only for individuals who are affiliated with web sites for national or regional television and news media organizations, e.g., USA Today Online, ESPN.com, etc., for institutions that are MIVA members, non-conference opponents and for the MIVA. The Ohio State University reserves the right to deny media credentials to any individual whose web site is not affiliated with an offical news gathering organization. CREDENTIAL PICK-UP Credentials may be picked up in the Athletics Communications office on the 6th floor of the Fawcett Center prior to the match. All remaining credentials will be placed at the media pass gate and will be available one hour prior to the beginning of the match. The media pass gate is located at the middle set of doors on the west side of St. John Arena in the walkway between the French Field House and St. John Arena. Proper identification is required to obtain credentials and they are not transferrable. ST. JOHN ARENA PRESS ROW Press seating in St. John Arena will be provided as needed. Tables will be placed in the south bleachers to accommodate the media needs with regards to print and radio. Visiting radio will be located in the south bleachers toward the west aisle behind the visiting team bench. Broadcast television will be set up in the north bleachers where cable run access is available to the northeast corner of St. John Arena. PHONE LINES Those members of the media wishing to order their own phone line can do so by calling University Phone Services at PHOTOGRAPHERS Photo credentials are issued to daily newspapers, wire services and special periodical publications. No flash photography is permitted and strobe use must be approved in advance. Photographers are required to stay behind the basketball outer court boundary on the north side and must be at the bleachers on the ends of the court. Please be alert as the entire court, up to the bleachers, is in the field of play. COACH AND PLAYER INTERVIEWS Media wishing to conduct coach and/or player interviews with the men s volleyball team should contact Kuhlman in the OSU Athletics Communications Office. Please call at least one day in advance to allow setup time. Prior to Ohio State: Named a High School All-American by both Volleyball Magazine and the American Volleyball Coaches Association... listed in the Volleyball Magazine 2014 Boys Fab four-time all-conference and all-valley selection, leading Buchanan High School in digs four seasons straight... guided the Bears to a state championship as a freshman... excelled in the pool, too, as an all-conference water polo player and competing in the 100-meter breast stroke for the swimming squad... named the Senior Athlete of the Year for Buchanan High... also played for the Clovis Volleyball Club and the Central Cal Club. 12 HEAD COACH PETE HANSON Pete Hanson has served as the Ohio State head men s volleyball coach for the last 30 seasons. He is the eighth head coach in program history. In three decades at Ohio State, the Flint, Mich., native has posted an overall record of (.648) and (.751) clip in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) matches. Hanson has been named the National Coach of the Year three times. Volleyball Magazine tabbed him as such in 1998 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) did so in 2000 before both organizations selected him as the Coach of the Year following Ohio State s 2011 NCAA Championship. The Buckeye national title in 11 concluded with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara. Ohio State went 26-6 and captured the MIVA regular season championship as well that season. Hanson has guided the Buckeyes to 15 MIVA regular season titles overall and made 10 NCAA semifinal appearances. He has been voted the MIVA Coach of the Year 11 times throughout his career. Hanson s squads have racked up 20-or-more wins in 18 of 30 seasons. The Buckeyes have also swept through an undefeated home slate six times under the tutelage of Hanson. 14 ASSISTANT COACHES TIM EMBAUGH 24th Season (Ohio State, 1990) SEAN BYRON Eighth Season (Springfield College, 1993) Tim Embaugh is in his 24th year as assistant coach for the Ohio state men s volleyball progam. He served as a student assistant in 1990, and lettered three years ( ) as an outside hitter for the Buckeyes. He has been a part of 13 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championships, including a run of five straight outright titles from The 2011 campaign came to a crescendo when Embaugh and the Buckeyes captured the NCAA Championship. In 23 seasons with Embaugh on staff, Ohio State has posted an overall record of (.699). Embaugh is originally from Canton Ohio, but grew up overseas in Indonesia where he began his volleyball career. A provincial championship and a trip to the Indonesian Junior Olympics led him to seek even higher levels of competition, which he found at the NCAA Division I level. Embaugh comes from a family of three brothers and one sister. His parents were missionaries in Indonesia for 24 years. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Embaugh was invited to be a coach for the 1997 USA Volleyball 16-andunder boys developmental camp. Afterwards, he was selected to be the Head of Delegation for the USA Boy s Junior National team which competed in a four-nation tournament in Sicily. During the summer of 1998, he was selected as an assistant coach for the USA Boy s Youth National team which competed in the Dominican Republic, where he also served as the Head of Delegation. During the 1999 summer months, Embaugh was a staff member of the USA Boys Youth National Team. Sean Byron is in his eighth season as an assistant coach for the Ohio State men s volleyball program, serving primarily as the offensive and recruiting coordinator. He has two national championships to his credit--one as a head coach and one as an assistant coach--in addition to accumulating over 500 victories during his time on the sidelines. Coach Byron has coached just shy of 1,000 career matches at the high school, collegiate, and international level. During his time in Columbus, the Buckeyes have compiled a (.672) record, won five of seven MIVA regular season titles, 4 MIVA tournament titles, and captured the NCAA championship in He coached six AVCA All-Americans (three First and three Second Team), as well as the 2014 Newcomer of the Year winner, Driss Guessous. He coached 10 Second-Team All-MIVA league selections, 17 First-Team All-MIVA selections and 4 MIVA Players of the Year since Coach Byron has invested much time with USA Volleyball in various roles, including head coach, team leader, and assistant coach. He coached qualifying teams for three World Championship Tournaments (2013 Izmir Turkey, 2009 Venice Italy, and 1998 Dominican Republic) for the U-19 and U-21 divisions. He served as an assistant coach in the World University games in 2005 and the Pan American Cup in Prior to Ohio State, Byron spent 8 years (15 seasons) in the unique position of men s and women s volleyball coach at Rutgers University-Newark. His teams at Rutgers-Newark qualified for NJAC and EIVA playoffs 14/15 seasons and he compiled a (.508) record. Before his time at Rutgers-Newark, he coached three seasons at East Stroudsburg University (PA). 14 He began his coaching career at his alma mater in Springfield Massachusetts as a member of the teaching faculty and head men s volleyball coach. In his first season as a head coach at Springfield, Byron s team won the Molten DIII National Championship, and in two seasons his teams were (.632). Prior to Rutgers-Newark he coached three seasons at East Stroudsburg University (PA). Byron also teaches National Certification courses for aspiring club, high school, and college coaches through USA Volleyball s Coaching Accreditation Program (C.A.P.) as an esteemed member of USA s teaching CADRE. He is an accomplished writer, having written journal articles and contributing a chapter on setting for Volleyball Skills and Drills, an all-encompassing master skills book developed by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Additionally, Byron was the subject of Coaching Volleyball s feature story in the May/June 2003 issue. Byron holds both Bachelor (1993) and Master (1999) degrees in Physical Education from Springfield College. As an undergraduate, Byron started as an outside hitter on the volleyball team and served as co-captain his senior year. He is married to Julie Byron and they have two daughters, Grace (age 10) and Calleigh (age 7). They live in Westerville, Ohio with their dog, Chloe.
