TBD -All times eastern -Home matches in BOLD CAPS Month-Long Road Trip Concludes at McKendree Ohio State travels to Lebanon, Ill., for a pair of MIVA contests A weekend trip to McKendree University marks the conclusion of Ohio State s regular season away schedule and wraps up a month-long stint away from St. John Arena. The Buckeyes last played at home on March 5 and will return to action in the historic facility on April 5 vs. Penn State. Both contests versus the Bearcats are slated for 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET starts. The two schools had never met prior to BEST DAMN TEAM IN THE LAND ACCORDING TO THE RPI Securing sole possession of first place in the MIVA standings with a road win over Ball State last week has launched the Buckeyes to the top of the official NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) this week. UCLA, the top-ranked team in the AVCA Coaches Poll, is slotted fourth nationally according to the RPI. With only four conference matches remaining, Ohio State is in the driver s seat for what would be its MIVA-best 25th regular season title. MOVEMENT IN THE COACHES POLL Nine days after knocking off then-no. 1 Long Beach State in California (March 12), Ohio State assumed peak standing in the AVCA Coaches Poll on Monday (March 21). The Buckeyes were the top-ranked team in the land for the first time since capturing the 2011 NCAA National Championship. The triumph over LBSU marked Ohio State s first over a No. 1 squad since 1998 (March 24 over Pepperdine). Despite following with two road victories, earning an additional first-place vote and ascending two slots in the RPI; Ohio State dropped to No. 2 in this week s Coaches Poll. BIG TEN NETWORK COMING TO ST. JOHN ARENA FOR PENN STATE MATCH Ohio State hosts Penn State on Tuesday, April 5, and the B1G battle will be broadcast nationally on Big Ten Network. SZERSZEN HAULS IN YET ANOTHER MIVA AWARD Nicolas Szerszen has garnered MIVA Offensive Player of the Week recognition a whopping six times in 2016, capturing 46 percent of the conference s offensive awards this season. The OSU Buckeye sophomore has gathered eight MIVA weekly accolades overall -- also doing so twice as a freshman. 2 BUCKEYES ON A ROLL... AGAIN Ohio State is riding a 12-match winning streak into the weekend, seizing 36 of 44 sets since Feb. 12. The Buckeyes current hot streak began with road sweeps at Loyola and Lewis and has continued most recently with six straight victories away from home, including five over nationally-ranked foes. It marks the longest Buckeye victorious stretch since the 11 squad rattled off 17 in a row (15 vs. D I-II opponents) en route to the NCAA National Championship. Ohio State strung together seven consecutive wins (six sweeps) during a three-week stretch earlier this season as well. The Buckeyes outscored those seven opponents by a combined 143 points, averaging a scoring margin of 20-plus points per triumph, from Jan. 8-Feb. 4. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING Ohio State entered the week owners of the nation s best winning percentage in NCAA copmetition (McMaster not recognized by the NCAA) at 20-2 (.909). The Buckeye offiensive attack is a huge reason why, ranking second nationally in both hitting efficiency (.351) and service aces per set (1.87). Individually, Nicolas Szerszen is slotted top-11 in several different categories: 5.17 points/set (3rd), 4.42 kills/set (6th),.46 aces/set (6th) and.406 attacking efficiency (11th). Christy Blough s assists per set come in second on the national stage while Miles Johnson s.42 aces/set and Christian Franceschi s.40 aces/set rate are rated 10th and 17th, respectively. WEST COAST WINS BRING INFLUX OF WEEKLY AWARDS TO COLUMBUS Gabriel Domecus and Nicolas Szerszen swept the MIVA weekly accolades on March 15 with Domecus earning Defensive Player of the Week and Szerszen named the Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in Szerszen s stellar play in wins over then-no. 14 UC Irvine and then-no. 1 Long Beach State was recognized on the national stage as well, picking up AVCA National Player of the Week honors. Szerszen is the second Buckeye to receive attention from the national spotlight in 16 after Miles Johnson was tabbed the National Player of the Week in mid-february. ALL SMILES FOR MILES Miles Johnson became the 15th Buckeye in school history to earn AVCA National Player of the Week honors on Tuesday (Feb. 16) after lifting Ohio State to road sweeps over two-time defending NCAA champion Loyola and reigning MIVA champs Lewis on back-to-back evenings. He attacked.446 while averaging 5.50 kills, 1.00 aces and 6.58 points per set for the week. Johnson was the first Scarlet-&-Grayclad National Player of the Week since Shawn Sangrey was recognized on the national stage in 2012 (March 6). Johnson was also tabbed as the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week. LAST TIME: LEWIS & LOYOLA EDITION Ohio State tallied a pair of 3-0 road sweeps at 2015 NCAA Tournament finalists Loyola and Lewis earlier this season (Feb ): First time Ohio State swept both Lewis and Loyola in the same weekend since March 30-31, 2012 (at home) First time Ohio State won at both Lewis and Loyola in the same weekend since April 3-4, 2009 First time Ohio State swept at both Lewis and Loyola in the same weekend since April 14-15, 2006 Ohio State then picked up two more wins over Lewis and Loyola last week (March 4-5): First time Ohio State has completed a regular season 4-0 against Lewis and Loyola since 2008 FRANCESCHI SERVES HIS WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS Christian Franceschi etched his name into the all-time Ohio State record books on Feb. 6. He opened with four service aces in the first set alone and continued his assault by gashing Ball State for three more aces by the end of the night. The seven total aces are tied for second most in school history, matching Pieter Olree s total at Pacific back in 2001 (top mark is eight aces by Jason Tobkin vs. Princeton in 2011). NEXT MAN UP A slew of absences to early season starters did little to derail the Buckeyes. True freshman setter Sanil Thomas stepped in admirably for an injured Christy Blough, divvying up nearly 10 assists per set in starting a pair of OSU victories over Erskine and Coker. Matt Dorn earned the starting nod 12 times when All-American Driss Guessous went down. Dorn threw up nine blocks against Coker (Jan. 22) and is attacking.500 overall this season. Illness struck Miles Johnson versus the Cobras, making way for Matt Pohlman to fill an expanded role. Pohlman mirrored Johnson s lethal serving weapon, ripping five aces (tied for the sixth most in school history) in the team sweep. PETE HANSON INDUCTED INTO AVCA HALL OF FAME Pete Hanson was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association s Hall of Fame on Dec. 17 at the national convention in Omaha, Neb. He becomes one of just 70 members all-time to become enshrined in the AVCA Hall of Fame which recognizes `individuals who have reached the pinnacle of their profession and the sport. 27 HEAD COACH PETE HANSON Pete Hanson has served as the Ohio State head men s volleyball coach for the last 31 seasons. He is the eighth head coach in program history. In three-plus decades at Ohio State, the Flint, Mich., native has posted an overall record of (.650) and (.749) clip in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) matches. Volleyball Magazine tabbed him as such in 1998 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) did so in 2000 before both organizations selected him as the Coach of the Year following Ohio State s 2011 NCAA Championship. The Buckeye national title in 11 concluded with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara. Ohio State went 26-6 and captured the MIVA regular season championship as well that season. Hanson has guided the Buckeyes to 15 MIVA regular season titles overall and made 10 NCAA semifinal appearances. He has been voted the MIVA Coach of the Year 11 times throughout his career. Hanson s squads have racked up 20-or-more wins in 19 of 31 seasons. The Buckeyes have also swept through an undefeated home slate six times under the tutelage of Hanson. At Kellogg C.C., his team won the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships in 1976 and During the 1976 season he was selected to the N.J.C.A.A. All-America Team. In 1977, he played on the United States team that competed against the Suntory Volleyball Club from Japan and toured across the United States, playing a team from the People s Republic of China. Hanson then transferred to Ball State University, where he played during the 1978 and 1979 seasons, winning the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship in 1979 and finishing fourth in the NCAA Championships. In both years he was named an All-MIVA selection and was selected as the Most Valuable Player for Ball State. After graduating in 1979 with a degree in natural resources and geology, he stayed at Ball State the next year, serving as an assistant coach. In addition, Hanson has been honored with his selection to various regional and national coaching positions. He was an assistant coach for the 1986 National Sports Festival. The next summer he was the assistant coach at the Olympic Sports Festival for the gold medalist North team. Three of his players participated on teams in the festival. In 1988, he was an assistant coach at the National Elite Junior Training Camp. The following year he worked as the head coach of the East squad at the Olympic Sports Festival. 28 ASSISTANT COACHES TIM EMBAUGH 25th Season (Ohio State, 1990) KEVIN BURCH 1st Season (Ohio State, 2011) Tim Embaugh is in his 25th year as assistant coach for the Ohio state men s volleyball progam. He served as a student assistant in 1990, and lettered three years ( ) as an outside hitter for the Buckeyes. He has been a part of 13 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championships, including a run of five straight outright titles from The 2011 campaign came to a crescendo when Embaugh and the Buckeyes captured the NCAA Championship. In 24 seasons with Embaugh on staff, Ohio State has posted an overall record of (.699). Embaugh is originally from Canton, Ohio, but grew up overseas in Indonesia where he began his volleyball career. A provincial championship and a trip to the Indonesian Junior Olympics led him to seek even higher levels of competition, which he found at the NCAA Division I level. Embaugh comes from a family of three brothers and one sister. His parents were missionaries in Indonesia for 24 years. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Embaugh was invited to be a coach for the 1997 USA Volleyball 16-andunder boys developmental camp. Afterwards, he was selected to be the Head of Delegation for the USA Boy s Junior National team which competed in a four-nation tournament in Sicily. During the summer of 1998, he was selected as an assistant coach for the USA Boy s Youth National team which competed in the Dominican Republic, where he also served as the Head of Delegation. During the 1999 summer months, Embaugh was a staff member of the USA Boys Youth National Team. T.J. READ 2nd Season T.J. Read shifted to the coaching staff as the volunteer assistant at the start of the academic year after spending the previous three seasons competing as a student-athlete for the Buckeyes. Prior to his arrival in Columbus, Read spent four years as an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force. Along with his regular military duties, he was allowed to compete in various states and countries around the world for the Air Force/Armed Forces team. He is still currently a U.S. Air Force Reservist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton. Read earned all-city and All-American honors while playing at Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif., and also played club ball for the Central Cal Club. T.J. s father, Tom, was a member of the U.S. National Team from Kevin Burch returned to the Ohio State Men s Volleyball program as a full-time assistant coach in May Burch, who served as Ohio State s volunteer assistant coach during the 2011 NCAA National Championship season, spent the previous year as the Director of Operations for Penn State University s women s volleyball team. He was named the AVCA s D-III National Assistant Coach of the Year after the Pride seized the 2012 men s national title. Under Burch s guidance, Springfield paced the entire country with an attacking efficiency of.381 that season. From there, Burch rejoined the Division-I ranks as an assistant coach for the UC Irvine men s team. In his lone season with the Anteaters, Burch helped UCI bring home the 2013 D-I NCAA Championship before returning to Springfield College the next season as an assistant coach for both the men s and women s programs. With Burch roaming the sidelines, Springfield Men s Volleyball was crowned national champions once again in Legendary volleyball coach Russ Rose then offered Burch an opportunity to join the storied women s program at Penn State University. As the Director of Operations in 2014, Burch contributed to the team s seventh NCAA Championship. Kevin s initial journey to Columbus was inspired by his late grandfather, Darrell Burch, a three-time Ohio State graduate. Darrell earned bachelors, masters and PhD degrees from the University in 51, 53 and 59. Before transitioning into coaching full-time, Burch captained the 2008 Orange Coast College men s volleyball team. 28
