It marks the start of a four-match homestand as well for the Buckeyes, also welcoming in No. 14 Fort Wayne for a Saturday night showdown. Ohio State has accumulated an overall MIVA record of (.797). 2 PUTTING UP NUMBERS Entering the week, three Buckeyes could be found in the NCAA Top-10 for statistical categories. Jake Hanes is slotted third and fourth, respectively, with his 4.75 points and 3.96 kills per set averages while Nicolas Szerszen is on his heels at 3.71 kills/set (8th) and 4.42 points/set (9th). Sanil Thomas is averaging assists/set, good for the fourth-best rate in the country. HANES PERFORMANCE EARNS RECOGNITION Redshirt freshman Jake Hanes was named both the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week and VolleyMob. com National Player of the Week on Jan. 30 after scorching Saint Francis (Jan. 25) and Penn State (Jan. 28) for 6.42 points per set while attacking.452 for the week. NEW WAVE OF HEAVY CONTRIBUTORS Four All-Americans in Christy Blough, Gabriel Domecus, Driss Guessous and Miles Johnson all graduated after the 2017 NCAA Championship run, leaving behind some opportunities in the starting lineup. Sanil Thomas has assumed the full-time setter role and is dishing out assists per set this season. Aaron Samarin now dons the libero jersey, responsible for 1.58 digs per set. Nick Laffin has started the first nine contests in the middle, attacking.341 on 19 kills while recording 17 blocks. Replacing Miles Johnson at opposite has been a group effort through the first five weeks of the season. Jake Hanes, Martin Lallemand and Reese Devilbiss have all started at least one match with Hanes stepping up big the last two weeks. 21 HEAD COACH PETE HANSON Pete Hanson has served as the Ohio State head men s volleyball coach for the last 33 seasons and guided the Buckeyes to three NCAA national titles in the last seven years (2011, 2016, 2017). In three-plus decades at Ohio State, the Flint, Mich., native has posted an overall record of (.669) and (.767) clip in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) matches. The Buckeyes are a combined 63-5 (.926) in the two most recent seasons, each ending with celebration under the confetti as national champions. HALL OF FAME HANSON Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame (inducted in 2017) America Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (inducted in 2015 as one of just 70 members overall at the time of enshrinement) Hanson has been named the National Coach of the Year four times. Volleyball Magazine tabbed him as such in 1998 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) did so in 2000 before both organizations selected him as the Coach of the Year following Ohio State s 2011 NCAA Championship. He picked up the prestigious AVCA honor once again in Ohio State s 2016 national championship came exactly five years to the date (May 7) after the program s first crown in Furthering the parallel, both titles were also clinched in the same facility, Penn State s Rec Hall. The 17 triumph was witnessed by over 8,000 fans packed into St. John Arena. Hanson corralled his 13th MIVA Coach of the Year recognition in 17 following a 32-2 campaign which ended in not only the NCAA Championship but also a clean sweep of the MIVA regular season and MIVA Tournament titles for the second year in a row. The Buckeye national title in 11 concluded with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara. Ohio State went 26-6 and captured the MIVA regular season championship as well that season. Hanson has guided the Buckeyes to 17 MIVA regular season titles overall and made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. Hanson s squads have racked up 20-or-more wins in 21 of 33 seasons. The Buckeyes have also swept through an undefeated home slate six times under the tutelage of Hanson. Ohio State strung together five consecutive MIVA crowns from The five-year tear ending in a 2011 national championship came with a combined winning percentage of.743 (107-37). Prior to Ohio State, Hanson served two seasons as assistant coach for the University of Wyoming women s volleyball team before becoming the program s head coach in His college career began at Kellogg Community College in Michigan, which he attended for two years. At Kellogg C.C., his team won the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships in 1976 and During the 1976 season he was selected to the N.J.C.A.A. All-America Team. In 1977, he played on the United States team that competed against the Suntory Volleyball Club from Japan and toured across the United States, playing a team from the People s Republic of China. Hanson then transferred to Ball State University, where he played during the 1978 and 1979 seasons, winning the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship in 1979 and finishing fourth in the NCAA Championships. In both years he was named an All-MIVA selection and was selected as the Most Valuable Player for Ball State. After graduating in 1979 with a degree in natural resources and geology, he stayed at Ball State the next year, serving as an assistant coach. In addition, Hanson has been honored with his selection to various regional and national coaching positions. He was an assistant coach for the 1986 National Sports Festival. The next summer he was the assistant coach at the Olympic Sports Festival for the gold medalist North team. Three of his players participated on teams in the festival. In 1988, he was an assistant coach at the National Elite Junior Training Camp. The following year he worked as the head coach of the East squad at the Olympic Sports Festival. He was an assistant coach for the USA Men s B Team during the summers of 1994 and Hanson assisted the United States Men s Olympic team in Atlanta in He was an assistant coach for the USA team at the World University Games, held in China, in Pete and his wife, Marianne, have two sons John (31) and Phil (29). John is an Ohio State graduate and is in the process of completely a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering at MIT.
