4 2008 M e n s V o l l e y b a l l O u t l o o k Senior Matt Ceran will b e counted on to provide points as an outside hitter in Head coach John Kosty is in his second year at the helm of the Stanford Men s Volleyball program. Sophomore Kawika Shoji looks to follow up an incredible freshman season. T he 2008 Cardinal are poised to return to the national spotlight and make a run at the MPSF playoffs. All-MPSF honoree Kawika Shoji and senior outside hitter Matt Ceran will lead John Kosty s young but talented squad. Stanford returns only one senior for the second straight season and will rely on the experience that many of the younger players received last year, combined with the solid recruiting class brought in this season. Head Coach Kosty begins his second year at the helm of the men s volleyball program. He spent 16 years as an associate head coach at Stanford before taking over the program in Assistant Coach Ken Shibuya is also in his second season after coming to The Farm from Juniata College. The Cardinal also welcomes back veteran coach Al Roderigues for his 17th year on staff. Matt Ceran is the sole senior on the team as Jesse Meredith received a medical redshirt last season and will return to the squad as a redshirt junior. Ceran, a Los Angeles, Calif. native, recorded 340 kills last season and will be counted on to continue producing points as an outside hitter. His overall game will help steady Kosty s young team as he provides solid ball control, strong net play and much needed experience. The five man junior class includes Miki Groppi, who finished second on the team last season with 458 assists. Groppi, the first Italian player to participate in Division I men s volleyball, will be counted on for leadership and to continue putting up his strong assist numbers. Jarod Keller comes in as the most experienced libero on the team and Cameron Christoffers will provide much needed blocking depth on the front line. Brandon Williams returns after leading the team in blocks last season. He also produced a hitting percentage of.333, the second highest on the team. After starting last year strong and finishing with a.297 hitting percentage, Jesse Meredith will look to rebound from his season-ending injury in The sophomore class returns after producing immediate dividends in their freshman year and expect to continue improving in Kawika Shoji served a dual role as he started the season as the team s setter and then moved to outside hitter in March. He led the team with 634 assists for the season and had 144 kills in the last 33 games to average 4.36 kills per game. Shoji, a four-time member of the USA Youth and Junior National team program, was named All-MPSF Honorable Mention for his efforts in his rookie campaign. Evan Romero led the team in kills (371) and kill average (3.86/game), and finished third on the team with 18 service aces. Garrett Werner finished second on the team in blocks with 72 and will be looked upon to provide continued production in the front line. Jason Palacios and Ed Howell will continue to improve and provide depth in the outside hitter positions. Kosty welcomes a six-man recruiting class that hopes to continue the previous freshman class experience by providing an immediate impact on the court. Highly regarded first-year outside Spencer McLachlin joins the Cardinal after having played for the USA Youth and Junior National teams the last four years. A product of Honolulu, Hawai i s Punahou School, McLachlin should compete for a starting position from the very beginning. At a skilled 6 6, he has the size and ability to make a difference for Stanford for years to come. Also from Hawai i is Jordan Inafuku. Inafuku, a graduate of Kamehameha School, played a year with both the USA Youth and Junior teams as the libero. A very athletic and intuitive defender, the coaching staff believes he can be a factor immediately. Outside hitter Ian Connolly also brings USA Youth National team experience having been a traveling member of the squad for the past two summers. The graduate from Mater Dei HS is a complete player that can receive serve, defend and hit at a high level. Garrett Dobbs hails from Greenhill School in Dallas, TX. Dobbs will be counted on to provide help at the opposite hitter position. During the summer of 2007, he was a member of the gold medal winning team at the USA High Performance Championships where he was selected as the tournament s best attacker. Out of Acalanes HS in nearby Lafayette, CA, Charley Henrikson joins Stanford as a middle blocker. At an athletic 6 7 Henrikson will provide a big net presence and a potent quick attack. Hawai i native Max Halvorson, a teammate of McLachlin s at Punahou School, gives Coach Kosty great depth in the middle. Setter: The setter position remains one of the strong points for the Cardinal as they enter Sophomore Kawika Shoji burst onto the scene as a freshman and will once again lead the Cardinal at the position. After splitting time as an outside hitter and setter in 2007, Shoji should be able to focus solely on setting the Stanford team during his second season. Junior Miki Groppi gained tremendous experience during the second half of the 2007 campaign as a starter and recorded 458 assists to give the Cardinal a formidable duo. With the return of two experienced and talented players in the setting position, I feel we have what it takes to compete in the MPSF, said Kosty. In Kawika Shoji, we have an athlete who does a remarkable job of making his teammates better and running the offense. Also, Miki has come back as a more confident and knowledgeable player. We are in very good hands with our setter situation Stanford Men s Volleyball

5 2008 M e n s V o l l e y b a l l O u t l o o k Junior Cameron Christoffers will provide much needed blocking depth on the front line. Junior Jesse Meredith will look to rebound from a season-ending injury. Sophomore Evan Romero led the team in kills (371) and kill average (3.86/game) last season. Middle Blocker: Stanford enters 2008 with the most depth in the middle blocker position since the 1990 s. Returning for the Cardinal is a core triumvirate of juniors Brandon Williams and Cameron Christoffers and sophomore Garrett Werner. Williams logged the most playing time of the three and led the team in hitting percentage (.344) and blocks (66) and was second in service aces (20). Werner was the second leading blocker with a total of 65 and he hit at an efficiency of.333. Christoffers provided some valuable minutes in a reserve role. Two incoming athletes give Coach Kosty a nice group of five. Charley Henrikson and Max Halvorson, both listed at 6 7, give the team much needed height and the added depth. Henrikson has shown flashes of explosive power on his quick attacks during the fall practices and should be a factor. I m very excited about our situation in the middle, Kosty explained. For the first time in a very long time we have a lot of quality depth at this position. We are hoping that we will see a big increase in production from our quick attack and also blocking. We definitely have a some good potential and talent amongst our five guys. Outside Hitter: With the return of senior Matt Ceran and an influx of talented newcomers, Kosty believes that the outside hitter position is one of the team s strong points. In 2007 we were dealing with a lot of inexperience at the primary passer-outside hitter position. In fact we were using several players there that did not play that role coming out of high school. Coming into the 2008 season, we are much more seasoned and have much more quality depth there, said Kosty. Ceran was one of those that took on the responsibility of outside hitter after playing as an impact middle blocker throughout his prep career. After a season of learning, he will be looked at to lead the Cardinal as one of the top left-side attackers on the team. According to Kosty, Ceran has made vast improvements at the position. Last year, he learned on the job and had the predictable up and down year. This year he looks very good and should be one of the players on our team that produces big numbers for us. Along with Ceran, top recruit Spencer McLachlin should also make a big impact for the Cardinal. McLachlin brings a tremendous amount of high-level experience to the Farm. Along with a spectacular high school and club career, he also was a four-year member of the USA Youth and Junior National Teams. He has participated in numerous foreign tours including the 2007 World Championships in Morocco. Spencer has the whole package size, athleticism, skill, knowledge of the game, and attitude. He has already shown that he can play in the MPSF. We expect great things from him now and in the future. A number of quality players also give Kosty more depth than he had a year ago. Redshirt junior Jesse Meredith is back and healthy again after suffering a broken foot during the opening weekend of MPSF play in He should be in the mix of candidates to start. Sophomore Ed Howell will make the permanent switch to the left-side hitter from the right-side position he played as a high school athlete. At 6 7, he gives that position added size. Sophomore Jason Palacios is much improved and brings court savvy and a big arm. New to the team will be freshman Ian Connolly. Connolly, like McLachlin, brings USA team experience with him. He was a member of the 2006 & 2007 Youth National teams that traveled to the Dominican Republic and Mexico respectively. Connolly gives the Cardinal another wellrounded player with great attacking skills and good ball-handling capabilities. Opposite: Sophomore Evan Romero led the team in kills as a freshman with 371 and will anchor this group going into His 371 were the third-most kills in a season for the Cardinal since the rally scoring system was put into effect in Romero has worked hard at becoming a more complete player and is expected to help the team with more service aces, better blocking and more digging. Evan continually improved through 2007 and showed that he can be a force on our right-side, Kosty said. We expect him to be a major point producer for us. Backing him up is freshman Garrett Dobbs. Though he is a little undersized, Dobbs plays very big at the net. He is a dynamic jumper and very effective hitter/ blocker. We will have plenty of firepower from the opposite position with Romero and Dobbs. This will help spread the opposing team s block and make our other hitters more effective. Libero: As with the other positions, this spot should be much improved. Talented junior Jarod Keller brings back another year of experience after playing in 59 games in Keller is a solid passer and has worked to significantly improve his defense. According to Kosty, Jarod is the embodiment of great work ethic. He is completely focused on getting better and helping the team in any way he can. With his contributions during practice and games, Stanford Volleyball can t help but get better. Keller is in a tight battle for the starter s spot as freshman Jordan Inafuku has displayed terrific ability and great defensive instincts. A member of the 2005 USA Youth National Team and 2006 Junior National Team, Inafuku has played against some of the world s best. Jordan just makes plays, period. He has shown signs that he can be a top libero in the MPSF. With these two athletes, I feel we are in good hands at the position Stanford Men s Volleyball 3

I did an awesome 5-day trek with my best friend after Freshman year to Machu Picchu. If I could bring anything to Stanford from my hometown, it would be The Santa Monica Mountains and beach vistas. In my off-time, I m most likely to be found realistically playing around on my keyboard, studying, sleeping, getting to know those around me better. Something people would be surprised to know about me I don t bite, hard. The biggest thrill of my life to date Meeting my sister, when I was 5 years old! 30 A L o o k B a c k : 30+ Y e a r s o f S t a n f o r d V o l l e y b a l l The year was I was enjoying a pretty successful season on the beach and getting ready for the final tournament of the season, the Jose Cuervo World Championships of Beach Volleyball. My regular partner, Jon Lee (who was a writer for Volleyball Magazine), had just been given the assignment to cover the FIVA Indoor World Championship tournament in Paris. So with little time, I had to scramble for a partner. I lived in Santa Barbara in those days and had played quite a bit against a promising local kid who had just graduated from high school. I thought if I gave him an opportunity and asked him to play, we could surprise a few people. Well, the kid was Karch Kiraly. We were given a 5th seed, I think, based mainly on my reputation and record that summer, Karch being relatively unknown. After defeating the 4th seed in the quarterfinals, we were matched against the tournament s #1 seed, Fred Sturm and Andy Fishburn in the semis. We upset Fred and Andy, advanced to the winner s bracket finals and eventually finished in 3rd after I fell victim to leg cramps. Ironically, Fred would end up hiring me two years later as his assistant coach for both the men s & women s teams at Stanford, and Andy (a Stanford volleyball alum) still visits The Farm to watch his daughter Jessica ( 09) play for the Cardinal women. Oh, and that Kiraly kid... he went on to a fairly decent career in volleyball. Don Shaw 1976 Men s Volleyball, coached by Art Lambert, became a Varsity sport at Stanford 1978 Fred Sturm took over as Head Coach and would stay on board for 12 seasons Head Coach Don Shaw ( , ) 1985 Don Shaw joined the coaching staff and became a co-head Coach with Sturm for two seasons; Craig Lauchner earned AVCA All-American honors. Head Coach Fred Sturm ( ) 1989 Stanford tied for the WIVA Conference Champions; Won the Western Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship match before finishing second; Head Coach Fred Sturm earned National Coach of the Year honors; Duncan Blackman was the AVCA Freshman of the Year. Matt Fuerbringer ( ) Head Coach Ruben Nieves ( ) 1991 Ruben Nieves took over as Head Coach and stayed for 11 seasons with the Cardinal John Taylor became Stanford s first Volleyball Olympian 1977 In Art Lambert s first year as head coach, the Cardinal finished first in their conference with an overall record. Tom Duralde became Stanford s first AVCA All-American 1984 Jon Root earned AVCA All-American honors, which he also earned in 85 and 86. During my freshman year ( ) we were playing in a match and coach Art Lambert called a timeout to explain something. He pulled 5 pennies and a dime out of his pocket to show us a configuration on the court. The group which included Tom Duralde, Andy Fishburn, Rich Rand, Kim Lum, Wendell Birkhofer and myself, then spent the entire time arguing about who would be the dime so that we never heard what coach Lambert had in mind. - Rod Fletcher Scott Fortune earned AVCA All-American honors, which he also earned in 87 and 89. Scott Fortune ( , 1989) 1988 Jon Root and Scott Fortune presented the United States in the Olympic Games; Fortune put away the final kill, known as the Golden Spike, for the gold medal against the U.S.S.R.; Dan Hanan earned AVCA All-American honors, which he also earned in 89 and Parker Blackman, Duncan Blackman, and Canyon Ceman earned AVCA All- American honors, which D. Blackman repeated in 92, as did Ceman in 92, 93, and 94. Craig Forsyth ( ) In the old days, the budget did not cover travel. On a road trip to play UCLA and USC in Los Angeles in 1976, we drove our own cars and spent the night sleeping on the floor of Dave Maron s parents house in West L.A. Bob Latta 76 I remember as a freshman, riding my bike at 6:00 AM from my dorm room in Flo Mo Hall to Maples for fall practices, while the Phi Delt team members (March, Witte, Kim, Parr, Root and Monello) car-pooled past me at 60 MPH, laughing. Another great memory was seeing teammates Jon Root and Scott Fortune succeed in the Olympics. Steve Modory 87 The 1985 team Stanford Men s Volleyball

31 A L o o k B a c k : 30+ Y e a r s o f S t a n f o r d V o l l e y b a l l I have had a great life, filled with joy and accomplishment, but to this day, if I had to name my single proudest moment, it would be this: In 1994, Joe Burghardt and I were playing in our Senior Night match against Long Beach State. Before the match, we were announced together. We had both started all four years, and we had both earned both our BA and our Masters degrees in our 4 years at Stanford. My whole family and all my friends were there. The crowd applauded with appreciation and my parents gleamed with pride. We went on to win the match on the way to a strong finish to our season ranked #2. This seemed to me to be what Stanford is all about: Taking advantage of all the opportunities available to you at a great institution. Canyon Ceman Canyon Ceman became the Cardinal s first (and only to date) Player of the Year. Canyon Ceman ( ) My favorite story so far from the beach is probably competing for the USA and winning the 2006 NORCECA Men s Continental Beach Volleyball Tournament in the Dominican Republic. My partner was AVP player Adam Roberts. This tournament was a satellite FIVB event and one of the first beach tournaments I ever traveled to. It is always a real pleasure to compete internationally against great teams and to meet people who share a similar love for volleyball. There were some good teams, for example the Puerto Rican team of Raul Papaleo and Joseph Gil who we beat in pool play. The play, though, was below that of the AVP. Nonetheless, to win a tournament is always special. After we won, there was a camera crew who wanted to ask some questions for the local news. He began asking questions in Spanish. Despite 6 years of Spanish class and 2 months living in Costa Rica, I could not understand what he was saying. With the camera going, all I think I managed to get out was, es bueno. Since then I have not and never will make fun of a non-native English speaker who is being interviewed in the US. Billy Strickland ( ) They then handed us $4,000 to split in cash right there on the beach, and they publicly announced that they were doing so over a loud speaker. Cash was nice because you knew you were getting paid, as opposed with a check. Considering, though, that I get nervous when I have more than $200 on me in Los Angeles, this was a little troublesome. My hotel was a good two mile walk away from where we were playing, so Adam and I decided it was probably best to skip the cool down stretch and start back to the hotel as soon as possible. With just boardies, sandals, and an envelope of cash we made our way through the crowd. We made it back safely and flew out the next morning, thus completing an awesome journey. William Strickland Keenan Whitehurst earned AVCA All-American honors; Mike Lambert, Scott Fortune and Fred Sturm all represented the U.S. in the Olympic games in Atlanta Curt Toppel was the MPSF Freshman of the Year. He also earned AVCA All-American honors, which he also earned in 01 and 02; Andy Witt played in the Olympic Games Don Shaw returned to the program as Head Coach for four more seasons 2005 Kevin Hansen earned AVCA All- American honors The Cardinal were the National Champion runner-up; Fortune made his second Olympic appearance and Fred Sturm made his Olympic head coaching debut; Cardinal Head Coach Ruben Nieves earned National Coach of the Year honors; Dave Goss earned AVCA All- American honors, which he also earned in Mike Lambert and Matt Fuerbringer earned AVCA All-American honors, which Lambert repeated in 95 and 97, as did Fuerbringer in 95, 96, and 97; Matt Fuerbringer was the AVCA and MPSF Freshman of the Year The Cardinal were National Champions; Cardinal Head Coach Ruben Nieves earned National Coach of the Year honors for the second time Marcus Skacel earned AVCA All- American honors Gabe Gardener made the U.S. Olympic team Former Associate Head Coach John Kosty became Head Coach after 16 years with the Cardinal The Block. The Title. What a lot of people don t know was how close and delicate that match became after game 4. We handled UCLA easily in games 1 and 2. Then they fought back and gave us an absolute smashing in game 4. We were about to lose that final. Keenan Whitehurst, our junior starting middle, grabbed everyone while we waited for the 5th set to begin and hurried us back into our locker room. We regrouped and refocused and came back onto the court with a sense of urgency. That saved us. We fought hard for Then a missed served by them, then The Block. Ba-Ba Boom! 32 MPSF C o n f e r e n c e Mountain Pacific Sports Federation P.O. Box 850 Woodland, CA phone: fax: THE MOUNTAIN PACIFIC SPORTS FEDERATION Tomorrow s Olympians Today! The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In , the Federation celebrated its 15th year of competition and is affirmed that is more relevant today than at any other time since its inception. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully ride the ever-changing wave of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its intercollegiate athletics portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its member institutions and conferences. Since its inception, MPSF teams have won 49 NCAA team championships and many individual titles as well. In , the MPSF sponsors nine Olympic intercollegiate sports while serving over 1,500 student-athletes and approximately 75 head coaches from 32 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men s soccer, men s and women s water polo, men s and women s indoor track and field, men s and women s gymnastics, women s lacrosse and men s volleyball. All MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men s soccer, men s and women s water polo, and men s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events will be a water-shed season as the Federation looks to do a makeover by redesigning its logo, graphic presentation and web presence. The MPSF will also look to more technological solutions in the near future to enhance its level of conference services to participating member institutions. In , four MPSF teams won NCAA championships while almost a score of Federation teams and hundreds of studentathletes competed in NCAA post-season competition. UCLA won its historic 100th NCAA team title in women s water polo after winning the MPSF championship. In contrast UC IRVINE won its first NCAA team title by taking the 2007 NCAA National Collegiate Championship in men s volleyball after pulling out its first-ever MPSF men s volleyball championship. CALIFORNIA won the NCAA men s water polo championship for the first time since the MPSF s inaugural season in after winning the MPSF championship, and ARIZONA STATE beat the field to win the NCAA Women s Indoor Track and Field Championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas, also after taking the MPSF title. Other Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Champions for the season includes NEW MEXICO s third-consecutive conference title in men s soccer and the Lobos fifth in six years; WASHINGTON earned its second-consecutive MPSF men s indoor track and field championship with SEATTLE PACIFIC taking the Federation s women s gymnastics title for the second year in a row; while STANFORD collected an MPSF title three-peat in women s lacrosse. Al Beaird has been the Federation s only executive director and commissioner, taking the reigns after being selected by the MPSF Administrative Committee in December 1997 after a national search. Beaird s position was established as a result of the Federation s continued growth and emerging tradition of NCAA and national championship caliber play, including 36 NCAA team championships during his tenure. Beaird, who formerly served on the athletics staff at his alma mater UC Davis, where the integration of student and athlete is a long-rooted philosophy, oversees the administration of all Federation sports, having worked closely with administrators and coaches from more than 40 different universities over the course of his administration. Beaird presided over the transition of the Federation from what was initially a scheduling alliance to what is now a nationally recognized NCAA Division I multi-sports conference. Beaird directs all aspects of MPSF competition, including championships, officiating, rules compliance, scheduling, media relations, broadcasting, sponsorships and NCAA relations, while also shaping conference legislation, facilitating annual meetings and providing direction and communication for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Administrative and Executive Committees. In 2004, Beaird completed a four-year term, three years as chair, on the NCAA Men s Water Polo Championships Committee and one year as chair of the inaugural NCAA Men s and Women s Water Polo Rules Committee. Beaird feels privileged to work with coaches and student-athletes who compete at the highest levels, including many who compete on USA national teams as coaches or players in international and Olympic competition. With his high level of involvement in NCAA Olympic sports, Beaird is often called upon to serve as liaison to the national governing bodies for amateur athletics in the United States. Beaird received his undergraduate degree in physical education from UC Davis before attaining his Masters of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento in The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation to celebrating over 15 years of championship intercollegiate Olympic sports competition The MPSF featuring tomorrow s Olympians today! 2007 MPSF Standings Conf. B u c k /C a r d i n a l C l u b Buck/Cardinal Club In June of 1934, the Tiny Buck of the Month Club was formed to raise the necessary funds from Stanford alumni and friends to pay the tuition costs for capable, worthy and needy student-athletes. As the Club s name implied, membership dues were one dollar per month and the word tiny was added to emphasize the modest amount and to honor head football coach, Claude Tiny Thornhill. The Club later shortened its name to the Stanford Buck Club and revised its initial membership dues requirement. Until the mid-1970 s, there were no athletic scholarships for women, nor was there any fundraising organization devoted to this purpose. To accomplish the task of raising scholarship funds for women, the Cardinal Club was formed in Under the guidance of the Buck and Cardinal Club leadership, a merged Buck/Cardinal Club was formed in 1987 to raise funds for both men s and women s athletic scholarships. The new volunteer organization was built on the fine Buck and Cardinal Club traditions that served both organizations well. Behind the Buck/Cardinal Board of Directors and more than 6,000 donors, the Club has continued to expand in recent years to provide football premium seating in Stanford Stadium and program support for all 35 varsity sports and 800 student-athletes. Under the new Stanford Athletics annual giving program, the Buck/ Cardinal Club will not only include its great scholarship tradition, but also assist the department s coaches and staff in providing the resources needed to compete at the highest level of NCAA Division I athletics.
