6 STANFORD ON THE AVP TOUR As pro beach volleyball has evolved, former Stanford players have made an impact each step of the way. In the late 1970s, just as Open events with prize money were growing in popularity, Andy Fishburn was one of the game s most successful players. Fish was second in the first Open world championship in 1977 and won five tournaments with eventual Stanford coach Fred Sturm in Fishburn went on to win 19 tournaments during a 17-year beach career. The 1980s saw the creation of a full-blown national tour and, in the 1990s, the advent of beach volleyball as an Olympic sport. Kent Steffes, who played at Stanford in 1987 in his only collegiate season, became one of the game s biggest stars. In 12 years, he won 104 tournaments, earned more than $2.5 million in prize money, and teamed with Karch Kiraly to capture the first Olympic beach gold, in Today, two former Cardinal players Matt Fuerbringer and William Strickland are active on the Association of Volleyball Professionals pro beach tour and are among the top 25 players in the sport. The 6-foot-9 Strickland is a rising star, winning the 2007 AVP Rookie of the Year award, and Fuerbringer is the established veteran, having just completed his 11th season. But 2009 also may have marked the end of long and successful beach careers of Canyon Ceman and Mike Lambert. Ceman has retired from the tour and Lambert sat out the season because of injuries and his future status is uncertain. Ceman and Lambert combined for 23 tournament victories and more than $1.2 million in winnings. By reaching $600,000 in domestic earnings in 2006, Ceman became the 15th American to reach that figure. Lambert, nicknamed the Hawaiian Curtain, was the only player with multiple AVP wins from and was the 2004 AVP Most Valuable Player. 7 STANFORD AND THE NATIONAL TEAM Over the years, Stanford and USA Volleyball have formed a partnership of sorts. Eight former Cardinal players have combined for 11 Olympic appearances for the United States and have won a combined six medals, including five gold. Also, former Stanford coach Fred Sturm went on to coach two U.S. Olympic teams. In all, 16 former Stanford players have played for the U.S. national indoor team, including two 2008 Olympic gold medalists, Kevin Hansen and Gabe Gardner. In addition to their national-team duties, both are playing professionally overseas. Hansen stars for Fakel Novy Urengoi in the Russian Super League and Gardner for Fenerbahce, one of Turkey s top clubs. The Stanford-U.S. connection continues today, with three current Cardinal players on the U.S. junior national team. Erik Shoji and Brad Lawson played for the U.S. side that competed at the Junior World Championships in India last summer, with Shoji among the tournament leaders in digs Olympic gold medalist Kevin Hansen Stanford s Olympians Scott Fortune (1988*, 1992, 1996) Gabe Gardner (2004, 2008*) Kevin Hansen (2008*) Mike Lambert (1996) Jon Root (1988*) John Taylor (1964) Andy Witt (2000) Brad Lawson Kent Steffes (Beach, 1996*) Fred Sturm, Head Coach (1992, 1996) * gold medals Scott Fortune displays his gold medal from the 1988 Olympic Games. 9 ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Stanford men s volleyball players are challenged to excel both in the classroom and on the court. In the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, which measure eligibility, retention and graduation over a four-year period, all 35 teams at Stanford exceeded the NCAA s standards. Six Cardinal teams earned a perfect 1,000, and the men s volleyball team nearly did, scoring 991. The men s volleyball program continued to prove its commitment to academic excellence in when the team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for carrying a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or above. Stanford was one of only four NCAA men s volleyball programs so honored, and one of two from Division I. At the conference level, seven Stanford players were placed on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team. In all, five current Cardinal players have received conference All-Academic honors: Jordan Inafuku, Spencer McLachlin, Evan Romero, Kawika Shoji, and Garrett Werner. Shoji joins 2008 Olympic gold medalist Kevin Hansen as Stanford players who have had the distinction of earning All-America honors on the court and All-Academic honors off it. And Brandon Williams, a starting middle blocker, graduated with a grade-point average in human biology and received Stanford s Block S Honors Award for men as the senior letterwinner with the highest GPA. 10 2010 SEASON PREVIEW STANFORD MEN S VOLLEYBALL THE END OF AN ERA T he end of an era. That s where the Stanford men s volleyball program finds itself in 2010, in the eyes of coach John Kosty. When Kosty entering his 20th season on the Stanford staff and fourth as head coach brought forth the subject, the meaning seemed obvious. First-team All-American setter Kawika Shoji was entering his senior season. So was opposite hitter Evan Romero, the Cardinal s all-time kills leader in the rally-scoring era. Surely, the end of the collegiate careers of two of Stanford greats, who helped lift the Cardinal from a 3-25 season only three years ago, had prompted Kosty s discussion. But that was only partly the case. The era is getting back to national prominence, he explained. This senior class has put us back in the national picture, and the classes from here on out have the ability to stay there. It s their obligation to uphold what the senior class has accomplished and continue it on. For the class of 2010, a five-member group that also includes starting middle blocker Garrett Werner, and reserve hitters Jason Palacios and Ed Howell, the refrain has been Worst to First. They were immediately thrown into action in the ruthless Mountain Pacific Sports Federation as freshmen, struggling at times while playing in what may be the most competitive conference any collegiate sport. Indeed, 11 of the MPSF s 12 teams are routinely ranked among the nation s Top 15. But Stanford has experienced a rapid rise since: to in 2008 and in With 16 lettermen and six starters returning and with the NCAA final four to be played at Stanford s Maples Pavilion the era undoubtedly will go down as one of the most dramatic turnarounds in school history, and with the potential of one of the greatest finishes. An end of an era indeed. We ve been working really hard to get to this position, Stanford assistant Ken Shibuya said. And all of these guys realize it s there for the taking. The 2009 season left Stanford with plenty of momentum, during a season highlighted by these accomplishments: Stanford won more matches in a season since its 1997 national-championship year and earned its highest season-ending ranking ( 6) since Stanford won 16 consecutive sets during one stretch its longest streak since 1995 and beat 11 teams ranked in the nation s final Top 15. The Shoji brothers, Kawika and libero Erik, became Stanford s initial first-team All-Americans since Kevin Hansen in 2005, with freshman Erik earning national Newcomer of the Year honors while shattering the national records for digs. Kawika Shoji broke Hansen s school season record for assists, and Evan Romero broke the Cardinal all-time kills mark, both for the rally-scoring era (since 2001). But the success of 2009 only enhanced the anticipation of The reason is simple: Stanford hadn t peaked yet. After all, the Cardinal often started three freshmen and a sophomore. And, as good as Erik Shoji was then, he s even better now by all accounts. Combined with the evident maturation of sophomores Brad Lawson and Gus Ellis, it becomes obvious that this is a more versatile and powerful team MEN S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

11 2010 SEASON PREVIEW Everybody understands the game a little bit more now, Kosty said. They re seasoned veterans, they make better decisions. It s just a different team. Another ingredient helps too. Depth. With the return of redshirts Garrett Dobbs and Charley Henrikson on the front line, plus the added experience of sophomore setter Evan Barry, Stanford has more options to alter the course of a match and to provide rest when needed. Kosty also has beefed up his coaching staff to include Chris McLachlin, the father of junior outside hitter Spencer McLachlin. Chris was a player-coach during the early years of the Stanford volleyball program in the mid-1960s and went on to coach Hawaii s Punahou School to 14 state high school titles in volleyball and basketball, including one with future president Barack Obama. The schedule also differs from past years, with only three nonconference matches and no nonconference road trips. The last two years, we were getting this team road tested, Kosty said. This year, we don t need to be road tested. The national championship is at Maples Pavilion. The following is a breakdown of Stanford s team, by position: Setter Kawika Shoji is simply one of the best in Stanford history and a candidate for national Player of the Year honors. Though he holds the Stanford season record for assists in the rally-scoring era (1,394), statistics hardly illustrate his talent. He just knows the game, Kosty said. He understands the flow of games. He knows who to set and who he needs to set. The sons of longtime University of Hawaii coach Dave Shoji, Kawika and Erik grew up in volleyball environment. He s one of those guys who s always played volleyball, Kosty said. That s his life, he s grown up around it, and he still likes coming into the gym every day. Barry, who made two starts last year, is a capable backup. And freshman Chandler Kaaa, the seventh Hawaiian on the team s roster, provides depth. Outside Hitter The Cardinal returns two all-conference players, Lawson and McLachlin. Lawson showed glimpses of being able to take over a match, as he did in the late stages of a four-set upset of 2 Pepperdine last year. But he arrived this season stronger and hitting harder than ever. I see Brad having a breakout year, Kosty said. I truly believe he s ready. I think we re going to see a much more dynamic and overpowering Brad Lawson. McLachlin, entering his third year as a starter, provides a versatile and savvy game, with superb ball control and the ability to convert bad plays into points. Palacios has worked himself into the mix, and junior Ian Connolly is an explosive jumper who can provide different looks at the net. Among the younger hitters, sophomore Dylan Kordic was limited by ankle injuries last year and is now is fully healthy; freshman Jake Kneller is a true competitor who hits with velocity; sophomore Jake Vandermeer in a Cinderella story who made the team after playing at the club level last year; and freshman Myles Muagututia is a highly-regarded recruit who is balancing football and volleyball. Opposite Hitter Entering his fourth year as a starter, Evan Romero has led the Cardinal in kills every season and holds the school career kills record for the rally-scoring era, with 1,295. His curve is still going up, Kosty said of Romero, who never played volleyball until reaching high school. He s going to have some big matches this year. Here s where Stanford s depth comes into play. Last year, there were few options besides Romero if things weren t going well. This year, Dobbs can come off the bench to provide Stanford with a different look if needed. Howell, who enters the season injured, is a team leader and will be able to push his teammates upon his return. Middle Blocker Werner returns as a third-year starter and provides an experienced answer to the MPSF s collection of hitting talent. Werner worked himself hard during the offseason and has evolved into a dynamic hitter. Evan Romero Ellis, too, looks greatly improved. After starting 14 matches last season and spending time with the U.S. junior national team, Ellis comes in bigger and stronger and fits right in alongside Werner. Henrikson, coming off a redshirt year, provides another option at the position and junior Max Halvorson brings offensive strength. Libero Erik Shoji crushed the national season record for digs as a freshman, finishing with 447 at a national-leading 3.92 clip per set. He also had seven 20-dig performances. The rest of the nation combined had only four others. He s a returning first-team All-American, Kosty said. Now, he s got to prove it. He s got NCAA statistics to back up his tremendous season last year, and now he needs to go out and do better. Behind him is junior Jordan Inafuku, a starting-caliber player who comes in to add defense and serving prowess. Plus, he gets to dig some of the top hitters in the country every day in practice and takes on the daily challenge of getting better. In describing Inafuku. Shibuya said, His mind is on the team winning that national championship. Whatever it takes. But, then again, Shibuya added, that describes so many of our guys MEN S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE 9

12 COACHING STAFF John Kosty Head Coach Fourth Season UC Santa Barbara, 1987 Entering his 20th season on the Stanford men s volleyball staff and fourth as head coach, John Kosty has engineered a remarkable turnaround since his first season as head coach. Kosty s teams have improved by 18 victories in two seasons since the Cardinal went 3-25 in 2007, and in 2009 earned its highest season-ending ranking ( 6) since Since he arrived at Stanford in the 1991 season, Kosty has seen what the program can accomplish and knows what it takes to get there. Kosty was an assistant under Ruben Nieves with the 1997 squad that won the national championship and has helped coach three conference championship teams and 13 teams that finished ranked among the nation s Top 10. Before taking over as head coach, Kosty proved to be one of the most talented and effective assistants in the country, first under Nieves and later under Don Shaw, and has taken those experiences and built on them. Stanford has seen rapid growth, as illustrated by last season s 14-match turnaround in 2008 and continued improvement keyed by elite recruiting classes. As a college player, the Fountain Valley, Calif., native earned All-America honors at UC Santa Barbara, where he played for three seasons after spending a year at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif. Kosty also holds the distinction of having been part of the U.S. national-team program as a player and a coach. He toured Europe as a member of the U.S. junior national team during his UCSB days and later served as an assistant for the U.S. at the 1995 World University Games in Japan. Kosty was a technical advisor to the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, scouting opponents at the 1995 European Championships in Greece and the 1996 Olympic qualifiers in Portugal. In addition, he was an assistant for the U.S. junior team during the summer of On top of his duties at Stanford, Kosty also was the head coach USA Volleyball s boys High Performance camps from at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kosty, his wife Sonja Paoletti and children Sara and Cameron live in Hayward. Kosty s brother, Chris, starred at University of Hawai i and is the women s coach at North Idaho College. 13 COACHING STAFF Ken Shibuya Assistant Coach Fourth Season Virginia, 1993 Al Roderigues Director of Operations First Season, 19th on Staff Cal State Hayward, 1966 Ken Shibuya, who joined Stanford s staff in the fall of 2006, never touched a volleyball until he was a student at University of Virginia, but quickly made up for lost time with his appreciation, passion and knowledge for the game. Shibuya s 21-year collegiate coaching journey began during his undergraduate days. He was instrumental in starting the school s first men s club team, before assisting the Cavaliers women s varsity from Shibuya established himself as a head coach in the small-college ranks, first with the women s team at Sweet Briar (Va.) College from , where he set a school mark for consecutive victories. He then led the Christopher Newport women to their best success. The Newport News, Va., program had one 20-win season in 21 years until Shibuya led the Captains to three consecutive 20-win seasons ( ), capturing the 2001 Dixie Conference title with the school s first undefeated conference season and reaching the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in school history. Twice during his four seasons, he was named conference coach of the year. He next took over the men s team at Juniata College (Huntingdon, Pa.) in 2002 and led the Eagles to three consecutive Molten Division III national titles ( ). Shibuya coached two national players of the year and was named AVCA Division III Coach of the Year in Shibuya has been part of the coaching staff of the USA Boys Youth team since 2003 and has headed U.S. development camps. In 2002, he served on Kosty s staff at the boys High Performance camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. He also is the lead coach for the Bay to Bay Volleyball Club, with a specific assignment of the 18 Nike Black team. Daniel Rasay Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season Hawai i, 2005 Daniel Rasay became a legend of sorts at University of Hawai i for his clutch play during the NCAA tournament. He arrives at Stanford hoping to bring similar success. As a freshman, Rasay came off the bench and sparked Hawai i to a 2002 NCAA semifinal victory. Rasay had 21 assists in two sets to win the four-set match against host Penn State. The Warriors would go on to win the NCAA title, only to relinquish it later for using an ineligible player. Rasay most recently coached Mills College, an NCAA Division III women s program in Oakland, from He is a native of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. He earned three letters apiece in volleyball and basketball, and two in track, at Konawaena High School in Kealakekua, Hawaii. Now in his 19th season on The Farm, Al Roderigues brings a wealth of experience and ability to the Stanford coaching staff. Though his health prevents him from being part of the day-to-day workings of the program, Roderigues remains the heart and soul of the program. Roderigues,, who spent the past 18 years as an assistant coach, has played an integral part in the Cardinal s three MPSF titles (1993, 1994, 1997) and its 1997 NCAA championship, but that hardly illustrates his impact on the Bay Area volleyball scene. A former college baseball player, Roderigues began coaching volleyball at James Logan High School in Union City in 1978 without knowing anything about the game. However, a keen eye for detail and a burgeoning passion for the sport made him a pioneering figure in the Bay Area as one of the first to create and develop a boys high school team. His girls teams at Logan went on to win four North Coast Section titles and 12 Mission Valley Athletic League crowns during a 13-year stretch. Roderigues would coach and teach in Union City for 38 years before retiring and James Logan s original gym was renamed Alfonso Roderigues Jr. Gymnasium in his honor. Roderigues was brought to the Stanford men s staff by head coach Ruben Nieves, Roderigues former Logan assistant, in Roderigues took a leave of absence from teaching to assist Doug Dannevik with the U.S. men s national team in 1991 and has served as an assistant for women s teams at Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego. Chris McLachlin Assistant Coach First Season Stanford, 1968 Chris McLachlin returns to Stanford after serving as player-coach during the program s infancy in the 1960s. Since then, McLachlin has had a storied coaching career in his native Hawaii, winning a combined 14 state championships in boys volleyball and basketball before retiring from coaching in McLachlin, whose son Spencer is a junior outside hitter on the Cardinal team, will serve mostly in the capacity of team-building and sports psychology. Back in 1964, McLachlin took over the Stanford club program at the request of John Taylor, a 1964 Olympian who decided to concentrate on academics. Even with a $300 annual budget, the Stanford team made great strides on campus and became the foundation for what would become a varsity program in McLachlin spent 37 years as a coach, administrator, counselor and teacher at Punahou School in Honolulu, his alma mater. He would coach the boys volleyball team to 11 state titles and the basketball team to three. Among his basketball players on the state champion team was future U.S. President Barack Obama. McLachlin left coaching in the mid-1990s, but remained at Punahou until retiring in For the past 24 years, he has served as the TV color commentator for University of Hawai i men s and women s volleyball MEN S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE 11

32 STANFORD UNIVERSITY Stanford University at a Glance On October 1, 1891, the 465 new students who were on hand for opening day ceremonies at Leland Stanford Junior University greeted Leland and Jane Stanford enthusiastically, with a chant they had made up and rehearsed only that morning. Wah-hoo! Wah-hoo! L-S-J-U! Stanford! Its wild and spirited tone symbolized the excitement of this bold adventure. As a pioneer faculty member recalled, Hope was in every heart, and the presiding spirit of freedom prompted us to dare greatly. For the Stanford s on that day, the university was the realization of a dream and a fitting tribute to the memory of their only son, who had died of typhoid fever weeks before his sixteenth birthday. Far from the nation s center of culture and unencumbered by tradition or ivy, the new university drew students from all over the country: many from California; some who followed professors hired from other colleges and universities; and some simply seeking adventure in the West. Though there were many difficulties during the first months housing was inadequate, microscopes and books were late in arriving from the East the first year foretold of greatness. As Jane Stanford wrote in the summer of 1892, Even our fondest hopes have been realized. Ideas of Practical Education Governor and Mrs. Stanford had come from families of modest means and had built their way up through a life of hard work. So it was natural that their first thoughts were to establish an institution where young men and women could grapple successfully with the practicalities of life. As their thoughts matured, these ideas of practical education enlarged to the concept of producing cultured and useful citizens who were well-prepared for professional success. Nearly 116 years later, the university still enjoys the original 8,180 acres (almost 13 square miles) of grassy fields, eucalyptus groves, and rolling hills that were the Stanford s generous legacy, as well as the Quadrangle of long corridors with their stately pillars at the center of campus. It is still true, as the philosopher William James said, during his stint as a visiting professor, that the climate is so friendly... that every morning wakes one fresh for new amounts of work. Current Perspectives In other ways, the university has changed tremendously on its way to recognition as one of the world s great universities. At the hub of a vital and diverse Bay Area, Stanford is less than hour s drive south of San Francisco and just a few minutes north of the Silicon Valley, an area dotted with computer and high technology firms largely spawned by the university s faculty and graduates. On campus, students and faculty enjoy new libraries, modern laboratories, tremendous sports and recreation facilities, and comfortable residences. Contemporary sculpture, as well as pieces from the Stanford Museum s extensive collection of sculpture by Auguste Rodin, is placed throughout the campus, providing unexpected pleasures at many turns. At the Stanford Medical Center, world-renowned for its research, teaching, and patient care, scientists and physicians are searching for answers to fundamental questions about health and disease. Ninety miles down the coast, at Stanford s Hopkins Marine Station on the Monterey Bay, scientists are working to better understand the mechanisms of evolution, human development, and ecological systems. The university is organized into seven schools: Earth Sciences, Education, Engineering, the Graduate School of Business, Humanities and Sciences, Law and Medicine. In addition, there are more than 30 interdisciplinary centers, programs, and research laboratories including the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace; the Institute for International Studies; the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; and the Stanford Center for the Study of Families, Children and Youth where faculty from a wide range of fields bring different perspectives to bear on issues and problems. Stanford s Overseas Studies Program offers students in all fields remarkable opportunities for study abroad, with campuses in Australia, Beijing, Berlin, Cape Town, Florence, Kyoto, Madrid, Moscow, Oxford, Paris, and Santiago MEN S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

33 STANFORD UNIVERSITY Stanford People By any measure, Stanford s faculty which numbers 1,874 is one of the most distinguished in the nation. As of the June of 2009, the faculty included 16 Nobel Laureates, four Pulitzer Prize winners, 23 MacArthur Fellows, 19 recipients of the National Medal of Science, two National Medal of Technology recipients, 244 members of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, 136 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 83 National Academy of Engineering members, 46 American Philosophical Society members, 27 members of the National Academy of Education, eight Wolf Foundation Prize winners, six winners of the Koret Foundation Prize and three Presidential Medal of Freedom winners. Yet beyond their array of honors, what truly distinguishes Stanford faculty is their commitment to sharing knowledge with their students. The great majority of professors teach undergraduates both in introductory lecture classes and in small advanced seminars. Currently, 15,140 students, of which 6,812 are undergraduates, study on campus. A little more than 40 percent come from California, but all 50 states and 8 countries are represented as well. Among undergraduates, approximately 55 percent are African American, Asian American, International, Mexican American, Native American, Native Hawaiian or Other Hispanic in ethnicity. Like the faculty, the Stanford student body is distinguished. Approximately 10 students apply to Stanford for every place in the freshman class with 89% of those admitted finishing in the top 10% of their high school class. Ninety-eight Stanford students have been named Rhodes Scholars, 78 have been selected Marshall Award winners, and 53 have been chosen Truman Scholars. Nearly 90 percent of graduating seniors plan to attend graduate or professional schools. Stanford students also shine in a tremendous array of activities outside the classroom from student government to music, theater, and journalism. Through the Haas Center for Public Service, students participate in many community service activities, such as tutoring programs for children in nearby East Palo Alto, the Hunger Project, and the Arbor Free Clinic. In the athletic arena, Stanford students have enjoyed tremendous success as well. Stanford fields teams in 35 Division I varsity sports. Of Stanford s 97 NCAA titles (111 national), 57 have been captured since 1990, by far the most in the nation. Forty-nine Stanford-affiliated athletes competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, collecting a schoolrecord 25 medals (eight gold, 13 silver and four bronze. Intramural and club sports are also popular; over 1,300 students take part in the club sports program, while participation in the intramural program is more than 4,600, with many students active in more than one sport. Looking Ahead In her address to the Board of Trustees, in 1904, Jane Stanford said,... Let us not be afraid to outgrow old thoughts and ways, and dare to think on new lines as to the future of the work under our care. Her thoughts echo in the words of former Stanford President Gerhard Casper, who has said, The true university must reinvent itself every day... At Stanford, these are days of such reconsideration and fresh support for our fundamental tasks teaching, learning, and research.
