3 SEASON OUTLOOK The season will begin in the same manner as the campaign; with a lot of hype and excitement. For the second consecutive year, the Panthers are ranked in the preseason top-25 by multiple sources and several individuals are ranked in their weight classes. The campaign will be fi lled with some additional excitement, partly because of the incredible schedule the team has before it and also due to the tremendous competitions within the squad that may not be settled until late in the year. Led by their three returning All-Americans, the Panthers are poised to claim their fi rst EWL title and make a statement at the NCAA meet. The following is a weightby-weight breakdown and what to expect from Pitt this season: 125 POUNDS Brad Gentzle returns to assume the starting role at 125 pounds for the third consecutive year. Last season he went with three falls and two major decisions en route to a second straight appearance at the 125 EWL meet. Brad s made a lot of progress and done some good things since he s been here with us, said head coach Rande Stottlemyer. We look forward to watching him develop into a more 133 POUNDS RETURNING NCAA QUALIFIERS Keith Gavin ( 05, 07) Drew Headlee ( 05, 07) Matt Kocher ( 04, 05, 07) Sean Richmond ( 07) physical wrestler this year and adopt a harder style on the mat. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bosso will also be in the mix to make a run at the starting spot, as will newcomer Eric Rosencranz and sophomore John Sutika. Bosso is coming off an injury, but has trained hard over the summer and should add some veteran leadership to the 125 class. The Panthers will rely heavily on sophomore Jimmy Conroy to produce in the 133 division. Conroy saw some action as a starter in both the 125 and 133 pound classes last season and posted a 12-6 record in his fi rst season, including a 4-1 mark in dual matches. 133 Jimmy s turned the corner and he ll help us this year, revealed Stottlemyer. He has some experience as a starter and we expect him to be in the battle for a starting spot again this year. Rosencranz could also move up a weight class to challenge Conroy PITT WRESTLING 3

4 SEASON OUTLOOK 141 POUNDS The starter from last season in this class is Joe Ciampoli, who has moved up a class to 149, but this is a group with a tremendous amount of depth. Former NCAA All-American Drew Headlee could see some action for the Panthers. Drew s a leader on and off the mat, noted Stottlemyer. He s an absolute competitor and a great representative of the university. Highly touted 141 incoming freshman Tyler Nauman will also look to add some depth, making this arguably the deepest weight class on the entire squad. Nauman is a very accomplished wrestler. He was ranked No. 1 in the nation and won state, district and sectional titles, offered Pitt s head coach. He has a lot of skills and wrestles hard every time he steps on the mat. We ve gained more quality depth in this class due to the outstanding recruits that we ve brought in, commented Stottlemyer. As a coach, it s a great feeling to know that I can throw either one of those guys onto the mat at POUNDS Mark Generalovich is the returning starter in another extremely deep weight class for the Panthers. Ciampoli, a consummate student-athlete with the skills and work ethic to make some serious contributions this year, will contest for the top spot. Joey Ecklof is hoping to bounce back after suffering a series of injuries. The former three-time state champion has been training hard and will 149 fi nd himself in the hunt for a starting position. Jeff Warusz, a transfer from Elizabethown who had a great deal of success at the high school level, will be making a push for some mat time as well. Freshmen Jesse Byerly and Kyle Patton has also shown some serious signs of progress and will try to use his state tournament experience to crack into the starting lineup. Freshman Christian Fagan will add some depth to this group as well. 157 POUNDS The 157 class is headlined by NCAA All-American Matt Kocher, who has been drawing rave reviews from his coaches ever since he stepped foot on campus. Last season, Kocher led the Panthers with seven falls and tied for second on the team with four major decisions. 157 Matt is a tremendous worker and a tremendous person. As a senior, he will be looked upon to be a leader for the rest of the group and I believe he ll do well in that role, said Stottlemyer. Freshman Adam Counterman is also slated to wrestle in the 157 class and is another viable weapon at Stottlemyer s disposal. 165 POUNDS Redshirt junior Sean Richmond is the returning NCAA qualifi er from this class. Coming off a season in which he compiled a 9-4 record in dual meets, Richmond will bring a style to the mat focused more on physical conditioning. Behind Richmond is incoming freshman Phil Sorrentino. Sorrentino brings with him a 2A state title and an abundance of potential due to the fact that he s still a relative newcomer to the sport. Phil is an interesting story. He s a great athlete with a lot of talent, but he s only been wrestling for about 165 four years. It s quite an accomplishment to win a state title in only your fourth year of competitive wrestling. Also at 165 pounds is sophomore Dave Kaptenovich, although he may move down a weight class by the year s end. The Pittsburgh native brings a blue-collar mentality to the gym that will bode well for him this season. Dave will defi nitely compete for us this season, assured Stottlemyer. He may lack some experience, but he s a hard worker and if I was ever in a ruckus, I would want Dave Kaptenovich on my side. Gibsonia, Pa., native Andy Vaughan will also look to make a push for the165 spot and has made an early impression on his new coach. Andy s a prep kid that shows up everyday and works hard, said Stottlemyer. He learned how to wrestle down at 140 pounds and then he got bigger, so he has the skills to go along with his newfound size. I think that will be a huge advantage for him as he continues to compete. 174 POUNDS Last year s NCAA runner-up and All-American Keith Gavin headlines the depth chart at 174 pounds. The consensus front runner for this year s national title, Gavin fi nished the season with a record of 28-4, including a nearly infallible 13-1 record at dual meets. He will assuredly make it tougher on the other competitors looking to crack into the starting lineup at the 174 spot, but there are still plenty of people who are stepping up to the challenge. Freshman A.J. Brentzel enters the campaign after a stellar senior season at Penn-Trafford where he 174 notched 47 wins against only one loss, which occurred in the PIAA Championship bout. Dan Mahoney, Ethan Headlee and Jake Pelletier could also make things a bit diffi cult for the All-America honoree Gavin as they will compete in the 174 class PITT WRESTLING

5 SEASON OUTLOOK 184 POUNDS This weight class features a wealth of hungry competitors willing to do whatever it takes to break into the starting lineup. Many of them have jumped up a weight class due to the depth and talent at the 174 spot. David Sullivan, a transfer from East Stroudsburg, is a welcome addition to Stottlemyer s squad and will also be in contention for a starting nod. Dave s another guy with a great work ethic. He 184 has the skills to wrestle at 174, but his genetic makeup is more suited to 184, Stottlemyer commented. We ve struggled a bit at 184 in the past, but I m confi dent that the group we have this year will step up and perform for us. Included in that group is the state runner-up from a year ago, freshman David Crowell out of Nazareth High School and sophomore Brock Mantella. Redshirt junior Matt Darnell could also make a statement in the 184 class, although there is also a possibility that he may jump to the 197 class. Matt s a great leader and a special kid, mentioned his head coach. The same thing could be said for the entire group of seniors; they ll all do well as leaders. 197 POUNDS In addition to possibility of Darnell jumping up a weight class, A.J. Hunte is back with a year of experience at the 197 spot. After serving as a backup to Eric Cassidy last 197 season, Hunte has worked hard in the offseason to improve upon his skills and could break into the starting lineup in POUNDS One of the most solid weight classes this year for the Panthers is the heavyweight division, as Zach Sheaffer returns hungry for a repeat of his freshman year when he captured the EWL title. A starter two of the past three seasons, Sheaffer comes 285 into with the confi dence and a good skill set that will help him battle his way back to the NCAA meet. Sheaffer will have to earn his spot, however as sophomore Ryan Tomei is eyeing the starting heavyweight spot as well. Ryan s a great kid, said Stottlemyer of the heavyweight. He s only been wrestling for about three years, but it ll be interesting to see him get into the mix because he wants that starting spot badly. 8 DAVID SANDBERG CHAMPION AWARD In Memory Of DAVID SANDBERG September 8, 1979 to January 29, 2003 David Sandberg was a valued and integral member of the Panthers wrestling family from 2000 to In 2001 and 2002, Sandberg was an NCAA qualifi er at 197 pounds for head coach Rande Stottlemyer and had an overall record of 47-25, including a mark in dual meets. In fact, Sandberg did not miss a dual meet in his two years with the team. He then joined the Panthers coaching staff for the season until his passing in January of David was everything a coach wanted as a wrestler, Stottlemyer said. David was as fi ne a young man as we have ever recruited to this University. As just the second wrestler recruited west of the Mississippi River by Stottlemyer, Sandberg didn t disappoint after earning NJCAA All-America status as the national runner-up in He fi nished in fourth place at the EWL Championships in both 2001 and 2002 and qualifi ed for the NCAAs in both years. In each of his two NCAA appearances, Sandberg upset a seeded opponent in the fi rst round. He fi nished his career with 13 major decisions and seven falls among his 47 victories. Sandberg was a regional, state, and three-time district champion at North Central High School in Spokane, Wash., and compiled a cumulative record of He also garnered all-city and all-state honors as a track athlete and all-city honors in football. 9 HEAD COACH RANDE STOTTLEMYER Personal Data Born: Feb. 24, 1955 Hometown: Hermitage, Pa. High School: Hickory College Education: University of Pittsburgh, 1978, B.S. in physical education. Family: Wife Regina Carson Stottlemyer, daughters Tara (22), Rebecca (21), Jaclyn (19) and Kelsey (16). Stottlemyer s Career Head Coaching Record Year School W L T Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Pittsburgh CAREER (28 Yrs.) TTwenty-eight years at the helm of one of the most history-rich wrestling programs in the East is no small accomplishment. Pitt s head wrestling coach, Rande Stottlemyer, has done it the old-fashioned way: a dedication and commitment to one s principles and beliefs and a good day of hard work. Coach Stottlemyer has a competitive spirit that is unfailing, said Carol Sprague, Senior Associate Athletic Director. As a student-athlete at Pitt, Rande was driven to become a champion and ended his Panther Career as a 3-time All-American. As a coach he expects that same commitment to work to be the best from the young men on his team. Rande is the consummate educator and he, his assistant coaches and his studentathletes fully understand that the true measure of success is that each young man takes advantage of the multiple opportunities available at Pitt and earns his degree. A championship athletic career without a degree is simply not acceptable in Pitt wrestling. Along with his assistant coaches, Stottlemyer has continued a winning tradition that he was a part of prior to his coaching days. Last season, Stottlemyer and his staff coached four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and two to All-America honors. Keith Gavin became a runner-up at the national tournament, and Matt Kocher fi nished fi fth. Gavin and teammate Drew Headlee also captured league titles in the EWL tournament. In 2006, for the second consecutive season, the Pitt coaching staff guided six wrestlers to the NCAA championships. Stottlemyer and his assistants additionally led his fourth wrestler in three years to a EWL title when Justin Nestor won at 165 pounds. In 2005, they coached yet another NCAA All-American in Headlee, the 24th wrestler to reach achieve this career milestone under Stottlemyer s tenure. In addition, Zach Sheaffer became the EWL Champion at 285 pounds in his fi rst season as a Panther. Three years ago, Carl Fronhofer, went from being unseeded to an NCAA fi nalist and an All-American at 174 pounds. Pitt s all-time winningest coach with 234 victories in those 28 seasons, Stottlemyer still enjoys what he does and gets just as much of a thrill in seeing his team succeed that he did in taking the job back in His excitement and enthusiasm for a sport he has been a part of for over 30 years is contagious as he talks about his coaching duties with the Panthers. Coaching at the University of Pittsburgh has given me an opportunity to work with great young men and top-notch assistants, Stottlemyer said. It has also given me an opportunity to help student-athletes build character and acquire tools they will need in the future. The Panthers have seven NCAA qualifi ers returning to their starting lineup in , including three All-Americans, making them a viable threat on the conference and national level. During his tenure, Stottlemyer and his staff have produced a two-time national champion in Pat Santoro, 26 NCAA All-Americans, 111 national qualifi ers and 28 Eastern Wrestling League Champions. In 18 of the last 24 years of his career, they have coached at least one NCAA All-American and his teams have fi nished in the top-30 nationally. Pitt has fi nished in the nation s top-25 in fi ve of the last 10 seasons. Academically, seven of his athletes have been honored as recipients of either the Blue-Gold or Panther Awards, student-athletes whose names are permanently etched in the stones of the sidewalk leading between the Cathedral of Learning and Heinz Chapel. His most recent addition to that special list was Fronhofer, who earned the Blue-Gold Award in In addition, two of Stottlemyer s former wrestlers, Greg Zimmerman and John Withrow, were the recipients of the prestigious Omicron Delta Kappa Award, presented annually to the outstanding senior student at Pitt. Numerous Pitt wrestlers have been named to the Eastern Wrestling League s Academic Honor Roll and last season the wrestling team captured Pitt s Men s Scholar-Athlete Academic Cup, which is awarded annually to the athletic team with the highest GPA. Stottlemyer s strong ties and success in the sport of wrestling date back to his high school career at Hickory High School in nearby Hermitage, Pa., where he was a PIAA state runner-up and two-time Junior National Freestyle wrestling champion. Following a stellar scholastic career at Hickory, Stottlemyer enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became a three-time NCAA All- American, achieving that level of distinction only one year before becoming a full-time assistant coach to then Panther wrestling coach Dave Adams. As a collegian, Stottlemyer put together a record of , won one EWL title and served as team captain for each of his varsity seasons. As a coach, Stottlemyer stresses the importance of keeping one s priorities straight. What we hope to accomplish here at Pittsburgh is to give our guys tools for life, Stottlemyer said. I believe in education through athletics. You learn so much in the sport of wrestling, where there is no place to hide. It is two guys going against each other, exposed in a public forum. We want our wrestlers to not just love the sport but love the process of progressing in our sport. It s important for them to realize that although they only do it for a short period of time, wrestling will be a part of who they are the rest of their lives. And as a celebrated wrestler and coach, Stottlemyer, who in 1992 received induction into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, realizes the unique nature of his chosen sport and the value of its potential rewards. Wrestling is a very grueling sport. And in order to be successful it takes an unusual amount of discipline and the ability to make a lot of personal sacrifi ces. It s a very combative sport and a battle of wills. Who s going to quit fi rst? And that s one of the things we emphasize the most never give in. Your opponent may end up scoring more points than you, but it won t be because of a lack of effort or commitment. Don t give up, because then you ve lost more than just a wrestling match. Those words tell more about Stottlemyer than any others. His work ethic is unquestionable as is his desire to keep Pitt among the elite wrestling programs in the country PITT WRESTLING 9

Jason s main responsibility has been recruiting, said Stottlemyer. That s an area where you need somebody who knows all the kids, is diligent and knows the sleepers as well as the superstars. I think Jason does a really good job of scouring the country, knowing the best kids out there and then getting us in the door. In his fi ve years with the Panthers, Peters, along with the Panther coaching staff, has made a signifi cant contribution in helping with on-themat training as well as boosting recruiting. This year s recruiting class includes state champion Tyler Nauman and state runner-ups A.J. Brentzel and David Crowell as well as other potential starters with significant scholastic success. He has coached four Pitt wrestlers to All-America status, including Keith Gavin (2007), Matt Kocher (2007), Drew Headlee (2005) and Carl Fronhofer (2003). Peters has also guided 16 wrestlers to the NCAA tournament in the last three seasons. Peters joined the Panthers from Harvard University. He was an assistant coach with the Crimson for the season. While at Harvard, he helped lead individual workouts for the wrestlers while training himself for freestyle competitions. Peters was also an instructor for the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club in Boston, Mass. Jason has a wealth of coaching experience that has helped us get better in training and in practice, allowing us to perform stronger in meets and in the tournaments, Stottlemyer said. In his spare time, Peters was a personal wellness trainer and promoter for the Boston Sports Club at the Harvard University Recreational Department. There, he educated members by providing specialized wellness programs designed for specifi c individual needs, incorporating exercise and nutrition. Peters also served as the head wrestling coach for the Massachusetts Cadet and Junior National Team. He worked directly with the USA Wrestling state director and headed his team to the national competition in Fargo, N.D. 11 COACHING STAFF Ron Tarquinio Assistant Coach Ron Tarquinio enters his second season with the University of Pittsburgh s wrestling program after completing a successful career as a student-athlete for the Panthers that included a conference title and four NCAA tournament appearances. He s one of our own. He s a western Pennsylvania guy and a Pittsburgh guy, said head coach Rande Stottlemyer. He s a quality individual, and we re happy to have him on board. He s a great fit for our program. Because of his size, he s able to train some of our lightweights. Not only was he a competent collegiate wrestler, but he was also a great freestyle wrestler who has had a lot of success. He s decided this is something he wants to do, and he s doing a great job for us. In his freshman campaign with the Panthers, Tarquinio posted a 25-9 record in tournament competition including six major decisions, two falls and one technical fall. He opened his fi rst dual meet season in , qualifying for the NCAA Championships after a fourth-place fi nish at the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships. Tarquinio fi nished overall with a 9-4 record in dual competition. In that season, he fi nished second at the Michigan State Open and won his fi rst match at nationals against Frank Edgar of Clarion. As a redshirt sophomore, Tarquinio brought home the EWL Championship title at 141 pounds, joining teammate Josh Birt as the fi rst league titlists for Pitt in three seasons. Tarquinio fi nished 10-4 in dual meets for the season, bringing his total win count to 72. In , he not only secured another NCAA bid, but Tarquinio also won the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational with a 6-3 decision over Richard LaForge of Hofstra. Tarquinio fi nished 2-2 in the NCAA tournament, registering wins over Josh Wooton of Northern Illinois and Charlie Pinto of Maryland. He also fi nished second at the EWL Championships and was the champion of the Mat Town Invitational. In his fi nal season as a Panther, Tarquinio advanced to the top 12 of the NCAA tournament, just one win away from All-America honors. He battled to a second-place fi nish in the Southern Scuffl e with an overtime match against Lehigh s Cory Cooperman. Tarquinio also placed second at the EWL tournament and seventh at the Las Vegas Invitational. He fi nished with a record including two falls and nine major decisions. Tarquinio was named co-mvp of the team in and fi nished his career in fifth place among Pitt s all-time win leaders with 120 victories. Bryan Stout Volunteer Assistant Coach Bryan Stout, now in his sixth season working with the Panthers wrestling program as a volunteer assistant coach, has helped mold the heavier weight classes into solid competitors. Stout was a four-time All-American at Clarion University, becoming the Golden Eagles only four-time honoree. While with the Panthers, Stout has offered his time to concentrate on technique and training with the upper weight classes for Head Coach Rande Stottlemyer. In 2005, Stout helped coach Zach Sheaffer to a EWL Championship in the young heavyweight s fi rst season with the Panthers. I think he s done a good job with Zach in particular, in terms of trying to develop him, Stottlemyer said. And obviously [Sheaffer] won EWLs three years ago as a freshman, so Bryan must be doing something right. Having him on the staff has given us a wealth of championship experience. He was a very strong and intelligent wrestler at Clarion and he has helped the wrestlers at Pittsburgh improve in trying to get to the same level. He is excellent in the wrestling room and an outstanding technician. Bryan also communicates extremely well with the wrestlers on this team and they have a great deal of respect for him. Stout was named the Eastern Wrestling League s Freshman of the Year in at Clarion and went on to win two EWL titles during his career. He was also a three-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference fi nalist, winning two PSAC titles. A 190-pounder for his fi rst three years for the Golden Eagles, Stout moved up to the heavyweight class in his senior season. Stout s wrestling achievements were recognized last year as he was a 2005 inductee into the EWL Wrestling Hall of Fame. Before his time at Clarion, Stout was a three-time district and region champion at Southern Regional High School in Barnegat, N.J. He also became the school s fi rst state champion in his senior year. In that incredible season, no opponent scored a single point on Stout and every one of his victories was by major decision, technical fall or pin. After his graduation from Clarion in 1997, Stout worked at a medical marketing company in Philadelphia for two years while helping out with the University of Pennsylvania s wrestling program. Stout moved to Pittsburgh in 1999 and has worked with Bayer Corporation for the past few years. In , he held a sales manager position at Bayer for a nationwide network of distributors. Now, he works in the sales and marketing department, focusing on national industrial paint accounts. Stout and his wife currently reside in Mt. Lebanon with their three sons PITT WRESTLING 11

12 TRAINING FACILITY The Panthers training room captures the program s rich history and demonstrates the University s commitment to the future of Pitt Wrestling. The season brought changes to the Pitt wrestling program as it welcomed a new training facility located in the Fitzgerald Field House. The original wrestling room was built in 1951 along with the rest of the Field House, but hadn t been updated until that summer. With two years of practice in the new facility, the Pitt wrestling program continues to thrive. Last year the team qualified four wrestlers to the NCAA tournament including two All-Americans and two Eastern Wrestling League champions. Pitt s wrestling program is ranked 13 th nationally for having 15 NCAA champions. The program continues to produce All-Americans and EWL champions as well. With the renovations to the original wrestling room, the Panthers are now in a facility that is representative of a rich and proud tradition that is Pittsburgh wrestling. The wrestling room is twice the size of the previous training facility while containing new floor and wall mats. In addition, the room is equipped with a new ventilation system and lighting. Adding to the facility is a video and recruitment room as well as a cardio area on a balcony above the surface. We ve really gone from a one to a ten, said head coach Rande Stottlemyer. I think it exceeds expectations when people walk in and see what s been done. Stottlemyer said that the improvements made under the guidance of former athletic director Jeff Long and senior associate athletic director Carol Sprague have boosted the morale of the team. The new wrestling room was built as part of Pitt s Quest for Excellence. The athletic department s initiative was developed to enhance facilities and give student-athletes more scholarship opportunities. The new wrestling facility officially opened on Friday, October 14, A number of wrestling alumni returned to welcome in a new era in Pitt wrestling. 14 KEITH GAVIN: NCAA ALL-AMERICAN In a sport placing two people in the spotlight battling for a victory, Keith Gavin brings a quiet confi dence different from most of the colorful personalities often witnessed at the NCAA Championships. It was his unwavering demeanor that led him to the championship fi nals and put him in one of the tournament s most talked about matches. I was seeded second coming into the NCAA s and my goal was to win it all, remarked Gavin. I tried to take the tournament one match at a time and, in the end, I came up short, but hopefully I can come back this year and fi nish the job. The NCAA Championships were the end to a highly successful year for Gavin, who fi nished He only lost to two competitors Missouri s Ben Askren and Michigan s Steve Luke. After falling to Luke at the Cornell Body Bar, Gavin came back in Las Vegas with a victory against the Wolverine wrestler. He squared up against Askren on three separate occasions, including the national championship. Keith saw everyone that he was going to wrestle at the NCAA s during the regular season, said Pitt s head coach Rande Stottlemyer. That s why we have such a demanding regular-season schedule, so that our guys are prepared when they reach the postseason. Heading into the NCAA s, he knew he could wrestle with anybody and wasn t surprised by anything on the mat. Gavin s rise at the NCAA Championships included a fall and a major decision in his four wins prior to the championship bout. When he faced Askren, Gavin jumped out to a two-point lead with approximately 1:25 left in the period. Askren came back with an escape, but Gavin held control of the match heading into the second period. Askren chose down in the second and scored on an escape for a tied match with just the third period remaining. A stall warning for Askren was the motivation he needed as he collected fi ve points and a point for riding time for the 8-2 decision. Keith has a lot of nasty stuff from the front headlock, Askren told W.I.N. Magazine. I knew I couldn t rush anything or I d get myself in trouble. So, I tried to hold it and relax. It was defi nitely exciting to reach the fi nals, said Gavin. And the experience I gained should be very benefi cial for me heading into this year. With Askren gone due to graduation, Gavin is presumably the heavy favorite to be a national champion in Not only was he the No. 2 seed in the 2007 tournament, but he stood at No. 2 in the national rankings for the better part of the season. Will he rise to No. 1 in 2008? Will he become Pitt s next national champion? Gavin seems to think so, but don t expect him to jump around and holler if it happens. To him winning, while appreciated, is really just expected PITT WRESTLING

15 MATT KOCHER: NCAA ALL-AMERICAN In wrestling, as in many sports, there are underdogs and favorites, accomplishments and failures, upsets and astonishments. What makes the sport unique from other endeavors is the fact that it places two individuals against each other with both combatants knowing that only one man will walk away as the winner. Matt Kocher s fi fth-place fi nish and All-America honor at the NCAA Championships may have surprised a few of his doubters, but he always knew he had what it took to fi nish the season with his arm raised in the air. I was seeded No. 11 heading into the NCAA tournament, so I wasn t even projected to be an All-American, said Kocher. I had a few losses in the middle of the season that probably hurt my ranking, but I kept improving every match and felt confi dent that I would do well as the championships approached. At the NCAA meet, Kocher defeated the No. 4 seed C.P. Schlatter from Minnesota by a count of 2-1 to join a distinguished group of 43 Pitt wrestlers to have been selected as NCAA All-Americans. His All-American honor was a testament to a great year of wrestling, as noted by his 27-9 record. Those nine losses Kocher surrendered in the 2007 season are deceiving, however, as eight of them came at the hands of NCAA qualifi ers and six of those losses came against wrestlers ranked in the top eight nationally. I saw a lot of good competition before the NCAA meet, continued Kocher, the three-time NCAA qualifi er. I think the fact that we have a strong league is a big advantage for us when we have to compete at the highest levels. Kocher was one of only four wrestlers in the 157 lb. weight class to end his season with a win. The outlook is bright for the 2008 campaign and Kocher s goal is to build off his All-American performance. Other highlights from his 2007 season include a win at the WVU open, a third-place fi nish at the Cornell Body Bar, a fourth at the Las Vegas Invitational and a runner-up showing at the EWL Championships. Placing at the NCAA s helped with my confi dence tremendously. It reassured me that I was one of the best wrestlers in the country, said Kocher. It feels good to know that I m not chasing the best anymore - I am one of the best - and I believe it s that mindset that will make my goal of winning it all this year more attainable. The expectations have most certainly risen from where they were a year ago and Kocher expects nothing less than what he accomplished last season. With his blue collar work ethic and strong desire to excel, Kocher will assuredly be among a contingent of wrestlers vying for a national championship in PITT WRESTLING 15

35 Two Pitt wrestlers came home as EWL champions from the conference meet hosted by Cleveland State, marking the fi rst time since the 2004 season that the team had accomplished such a feat. Drew Headlee captured the 133-pound title, and Keith Gavin earned the 174-pound victory. Pitt had two other fi nalists including Matt Kocher and Sean Richmond, who both recorded second-place fi nishes. All four competitors qulaifi ed to represent the university at the national tournament. EASTERN WRESTLING LEAGUE 2007 EWL CHAMPIONSHIPS a fi fth point with an escape. Kocher responded with a takedown to put the bout at 5-3. Martin stretched his lead to three points after another escape and went on to score two more to pull away, 8-3, heading into the fi nal period. The third period ended witout any scoring and after being awarded riding time, Martin won the match and the championship, 9-3. Kocher took second place and advanced to the national tournament, where he claimed All-America honors. He was the Panthers only three-time NCAA qualifi er heading to the tournament. Pitt fi nished fourth in the team competition with points. The previous three seasons, the Panthers captured third-place fi nishes in the league tournament. Winning the competition was Edinboro with points. In second was West Virginia with points, and in third was Lock Haven with points. Pitt s fi rst fi nalist was at 133 pounds where Headlee faced West Virginia s Mark Anderson. In Pitt s dual meet with the Mountaineers, Headlee won a 4-2 decision over Anderson. The two were scoreless in the fi rst period when Headlee scored on an escape and takedown in the second and proceeded to put Anderson on his back. With a pin at the 4:18 mark, Headlee became the 26th Panther in school history to win an EWL title. With the victory, Headlee earned his fi rst trip to the NCAA Championships since the 2005 season when he earned All-America honors. At 157 pounds, Kocher faced Lock Haven s Seth Martin. The familiar foes split their two previous matches during the 2007 season, with each wrestler tallying one win. Kocher pinned Martin at the WVU Open, and Martin evened the score at the dual meet in the Fitzgerald Field House. Martin was the fi rst to score at the conference meet, earning two on a takedown. Kocher came back with an escape to cut Martin s lead to one. Another takedown gave Martin the 4-1 lead heading into the second period, and he added Pitt s Richmond made his fi rst appearance in the EWL fi nals, taking on Edinboro s Deonte Penn. Because Richmond didn t wrestle in the dual meet with the Fighting Scots, the two had not gone head-to-head this season. Penn scored early with two on a takedown and went on to pin Richmond before the end of the period with a fall at the 2:44 mark. With a second-place fi n- ish, Richmond earned his fi rst appearance in the national tournament. In the 174 pound weight class, Gavin was set to take on West Virginia s Kurt Brenner. The two met earlier this season in the dual meet and Gavin was victorious late in the bout, pulling out a 9-4 decision. In the fi rst period, Gavin took a two-point lead with a takedown, but Brenner had an escape to narrow Gavin s lead to one heading into the second period. Gavin picked up another point on an escape in the second and added another takedown for a 5-1 lead. Brenner scored one-point on an escape to set the score at 5-2 heading into the fi nal period. With a point for riding time, Gavin was victorious by a decision of 6-3 and became Pitt s second EWL champion of the day and the 27th in school history. He joined the three other Pitt fi nalists from the conference meet at the national tournament and garnered All-America honors with a second-place fi nish in his weight class. This marked the second time that Gavin has qulaifi ed for the tournament in his career, having also done so as a sophomore PITT WRESTLING 35
