4 HEAD COACH RYAN ROCK PERROTTE Former Fort Wayne standout middle blocker, Ryan Rock Perrotte, enters his third season as the men s volleyball head coach after spending 12 seasons as the Fort Wayne men s volleyball assistant coach. During his tenure, the Mastodons have reached a national title game, made two NCAA Final Four appearances and won two MIVA championships. He has coached three All-Americans and 14 All-MIVA selections. A proud native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Rock came to Fort Wayne in the fall of 1995 and was a four-year starter at middle blocker for the Dons. Perrotte s single-match hitting percentage record set against Ohio State in 1999, stood for 11 years until Oliver Kook s topped the mark with an.875 performance against Lewis in In Rock s senior season, he was named to the All- MIVA Second Team, leading the Dons to a 23-4 overall record, a MIVA conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four. In four seasons, Perrotte competed in 345 total sets, posting 681 kills, including three seasons of a hitting percentage greater than.350. His.405 hitting percentage as a senior is still one of the best marks in Fort Wayne history. He finished his career at Fort Wayne ranked third in career blocks with 429 and eighth in career digs with 579. In 2006, Rock was an All-America Selection at the US Adult Open Championships in New Orleans. 6 QUICK HITTERS FOR THE WEEK SCOUTING FORT WAYNE Fort Wayne enters the weekend 7-0. Pelegrin Vargas leads the team in kills per set with 3.86, followed by Colton Stone with 3.05 per set. Michael Keegan is pacing the Mastodons.345 hitting percentage with assists per set. Tomas Gago leads the Dons with 1.44 blocks per set, a national best. Fort Wayne moved into the AVCA Top 15 Poll on January 29 for the first time since April, 20, SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS Saint Francis will enter its match with Fort Wayne with a.500 record at 5-5. It s only win over a Top 15 team was over then No. 8 Stanford. The Red Flash have faced seven teams that were or spent time in the Top 15 this season. Three members of Saint Francis team have 75 kills or more on the season. SCOUTING PENN STATE Penn State starts the weekend 3-2, but will have a match with Ball State before welcoming the Mastodons. PSU has wins over Mount Olive, Alderson Broaddus and USC. Losses came to the Nittany Lions at the hands of UCLA and Ohio State. Penn State has seven juniors and seniors on its squad. AVCA TOP 15 DONS Fort Wayne moved into the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll on January 29, coming in at No. 15. The Mastodons are ranked for the first time since April 20, 2015, which was also a spot at No. 15. ONE OF THREE Fort Wayne is one of just three programs in the country with an undefeated record through the month of January. No. 1 Long Beach State is 9-0 and Charleston is 3-0. NATIONAL LEADER After arriving on campus on January 2, Tomas Gago is ranked first in the nation in blocks per set with He did not compete in Fort Wayne s first two matches of the year, but has since posted five or more blocks in three matches. This is the most on Fort Wayne s roster. This included eight blocks against Harvard and seven against Sacred Heart. UNDEFEATED START Fort Wayne started 4-0 for the first time since That marked the fourth time in program history that the Mastodons have started 4-0. The best start in program history was in 2007, when the Dons started 8-0. In that season, the Mastodons went to the national championship match, before falling to UC Irvine. Through seven matches, the Dons are still undefeated, which is the third time in program history to start and 1999 were the two other seasons to have a 7-0 start. BRINGING OUT THE BROOMS Six of Fort Wayne s seven victories so far this season have been sweeps. The Mastodons only dropped one set in January in a 3-1 win over Harvard. IN THE RANKINGS... Fort Wayne is ranked in the top five in the country in assists per set (4th), hitting percentage (3rd), kills per set (3rd) and win/ loss percentage (T-1st). The Dons own assists per set,.345 hitting percentage, kills per set, and a perfect win/loss percentage. Individually, Michael Keegan is sixth in the country and second in the MIVA in assists per set with Tomas Gago is first in the nation in blocks per set with Pelegrin Vargas is fourth in the country and second in the MIVA with 3.86 kills per set. LAST TIME OUT Fort Wayne came away with a three-set victory over the Lourdes Gray Wolves. Pelegrin Vargas led the Mastodons with 13 kills on the night. NEXT TIME UP The Mastodons continue its road stretch, and opens MIVA competition with a pair of matches at McKendree and Ohio State. Ohio State is ranked fifth in the AVCA Poll for January 29. WHY MASTODONS? It all started about 10,000 years ago That s when mastodons roamed the southern Great Lakes region of North America. These stocky versions of modern elephants reached heights of about ten feet at the shoulder, with tusks that curved upward that were six feet or more in length. Mastodons were browsers who fed mostly on leaves and twigs from small trees and shrubs. One such mastodon found its final resting place about two miles south of Angola, Indiana, on land that would eventually become part of Orsie Routsong s farm. In the fall of 1968, Routsong decided to expand a small pond on his property. An excavator was hired and instructed to pile the excavated material around the edge of the pond. Several days after the excavation was finished a heavy rain storm pounded the piles of dirt. The next day, a young neighbor boy of Routsong s discovered a large bone in one of the dirt piles. Routsong knew it was something out of the ordinary, so he called Jack Sunderman, chair of the IPFW Geology Department, to identify the bone, and to ask for advice on what to do with it. Sunderman says his first question was, How big is the bone? with Routsong s answer being pretty big, maybe 3 or 4 feet long. When Sunderman got to the farm, he identified the bone as a leg bone of a mastodon. He told Routsong a skeleton like this would have scientific and instructional value if a large portion of it could be located. Routsong agreed, and also agreed to have the IPFW Geology Department do the excavation. Sunderman got two more faculty members, Geoffrey Matthews and Bernd Erdtmann, and several geology students to help in the project. After all the mastodon bones were collected, cleaned and preserved, Routsong agreed to have the adult mastodon skeleton placed on permanent display at IPFW; the skull of a nearby baby mastodon is now on loan to Science Central. In the spring of 1970, The Communicator (IPFW s student newspaper) began a drive to come up with a mascot for IPFW. Some of the suggested choices included the Boiler-Hoosiers, Warhawks, Marauders, Frontiersmen, Pioneers, Elves and Hobbits. Those names and others came from student suggestions. Steve Pettyjohn, who served as the student body president in , wrote a letter to the editor about the school mascot. In his letter, Pettyjohn extolled the virtues of choosing the mastodon as IPFW s mascot: It sounds different, strange - that s exactly why. It s different and yes, even strange. For God s Sakes, let s have the courage to be a little different. In the meantime, former Indiana Congressman Mark Souder, who served as student body president in , recalls being lobbied by the Geology Club to choose the mastodon. According to Nusbaumer, Souder appointed a committee in student government to select a name although he was lobbying hard for the mastodon. After some discussion on the subject, Souder says a vote was taken by the committee and the mastodon came out the winner. Souder finished his recollection with these thoughts. History shows that the advocacy of the geology club was correct. The fast, decisive action of the elected student government though it did not please everyone and was not a precedent that the University desired to see has also been upheld by history as IPFW regularly scores high in any list of unique university nicknames; even in this era when everybody strives to be different. 7 NEWS AND NOTES FROM THE SEASON GAGO PLAYER OF THE WEEK Tomas Gago was the recipient of the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of January 23. Gago had 14 blocks over two matches against Harvard and Sacred Heart, averaging two per set. In addition to his defensive performance, he also contributed 11 kills, with a perfect 6 for 6 against SHU. Because of this, he earned the Off the Block/Springbak Inc. National Freshman of the Week. KEEGAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK Michael Keegan was the recipient of the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of January 16. Keegan earned this honor behind a 22-dig weekend at Princeton and NJIT. He had 17 digs and two block assists against the Tigers. Keegan also chipped in five digs in the Mastodons 3-0 win at NJIT. SWEEPING START Fort Wayne started the season with four straight sweeps. This is the first time in program history that Fort Wayne started the season with four straight victories without dropping a set. The four-match stretch is the longest streak of sweeps since 2007, when the Mastodons had six straight, including three matches in the MIVA tournament. HOT HITTING AT PRINCETON The Mastodons had hot hands at Princeton, ending the night with a.522 hitting clip. Tomas Gago led the Dons with a.700 clip, followed by Pelegrin Vargas (.615), Colton Stone (.375) and Tony Price (.364). Richie Diedrich had five kills on five attempts for a perfect and Michael Keegan also had a kill on his only attempt. Keegan dished out 32 assists, and the Dons recorded 40 total assists on 41 kills. WINNING BIG Fort Wayne s win over Emmanuel had a 29-point differential in favor of the Mastodons. This was Fort Wayne s largest differential in a three-set match since 2015, when the Dons defeated Loras. That match also had a 29-point differential. NATIONAL PLAYERS Three players on the Fort Wayne roster have playing experience for their respective national teams. Sophomore Pelegrin Vargas competed for the Puerto Rican National Team, freshman Tomas Gago for the Chilean Team, and freshman Frederico Santos for the Portuguese National Team. The Karch Kiraly Award is given to an outstanding outside hitter at the DI or DII level. TJ DeFalco of Long Beach State was the 2017 recipient and Nicolas Szerszen of Ohio State won it in He joins five other MIVA players that were also selected for the watch list. WATCH OUT FOR FRED Freshman Frederico Santos was selected for the 2018 Lloy Ball Award Watch List. The Lloy Ball Award is given to an outstanding setter at the DI or DII level. Santos joins the likes of Josh Tuaniga (Long Beach State), who won the Lloy Ball Award in 2017, and Leo Durkin (BYU) who was selected as a finalist in There are four MIVA setters who made the watch list.
