1 Mobile number Programme and Newsletter August-November 2012 Chairman s Note s Further to my note in the last programme concerning the forthcoming vacancy for a new Membership Secretary, I am delighted to report that Diane Biggadike has volunteered to fill the post. Diane will take over at the next AGM. Don t forget to book your seat for the coach trip on Tuesday, 28 th August. This time we are off to Canterbury. There will be an 8 mile walk ending back in the city or, if preferred, a one mile walk direct to the city centre. Pick-up points are shown in the programme. The cost is 12 pp. An Ode to the Back Marker When out walking how many people give a thought to that solitary person at the rear of the group. I refer, of course, to the back marker. As Shakespeare might have said, Tis awfully lonely at the back The group to follow on winding track Off go the leaders, the pace so fast Alright for them, there re not last 1

2 Which way to go, what path to take One can t see round corners, a decision to make Blowing on whistle that nobody hears Shouting out loud helps to calm ones fears A solitary life and that s for sure Rounding up strays like a guide on tour Move to front and risk a glare Best stay behind - don t take the dare To be serious, it can be a strain for the BM if people fail to keep up with the main group. London in particular, with its many attractions and distractions, can be very trying. So please, when we are out and about, do try to keep in visual touch with those in front and don t wander off. AGM Our AGM this year will be held in Dereham Hall which is behind Upminster Library on the 7 th November at 7.30 pm. There is a form for proposing the new committee members in the back of this programme. Secretary s Report Congratulations to Joan Bullivant and Iris Jupp for completing the Hadleigh to Southend (H2S) Legacy Walk. 17 members from Essex Area completed the walk, a total of 302 attended during the week. I have a booklet of the route, if anyone wishes to see it, or contact Norman Berry normanberryuk@yahoo.co.uk. for a copy. The price is 2.00 plus postage. The Footpath and Countryside Officer for Barking and Dagenham is Michael Cullen, 2 Whitmore Avenue, Harold Wood, Romford. RM3 0WY. Tel

Please contact Peter O Neill if you have any queries. The estimated cost is 21. However, if you decide after a trial of receiving the programme via , that you would rather revert to the printed copy please just send another to Peter Owen at the above address and you will then be sent paper copies. All members with access are urged to try the new system. All walks If the weather is inclement, it is important to either check our web site as noted on page 1or contact the leader to see if the walk will take place. Please check for the availability of public transport on the TFL web site, before travelling at weekends to allow for the planning of alternative routes. Car share Please car share where possible, as parking is often quite limited. Curry Evening Curry night is Thursday 4 th October 7.30 at the Railway Hotel, Hornchurch at 7.30pm. 5 Walking with the Ramblers All sporting activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accident will occasionally occur. It is therefore important that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity, and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to occur. The Ramblers Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales. 18 New Walks and Walk Leaders Required. The committee would like to thank all the volunteer walks leaders who have enabled us to provide wide variety of walks that are available to the group each week. We must all remember that these people give freely of their time to investigate, plan and lead our walks. Having said that, the walks coordinators are always seeking new ideas and people who would like to lead a walk. This may appear a daunting prospect at first but rest assured help is always available to either turn your idea into a walk, or support you in leading it. If you feel you have something to offer please contact your walks coordinator, or a committee member, who will be only too pleased to advise you. Please remember that the walks programme is dependent on volunteers if no one volunteers to lead walks there will be no walks programme and therefore no walks for anyone to participate in! 18

19 Ramblers Holidays Walking Partnership The Havering and East London Ramblers group has recently joined The Walking Partnership. This new partnership, supported by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays has given many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays. Now our group can benefit directly. Ramblers Worldwide Holidays operate group walking holidays in the UK and all around the world. Each holiday is accompanied by a qualified walks leader, so you can leave all the organising to them and just enjoy meeting like minded people and of course, some fantastic walking. Holidays are graded in terms of difficulty, and there is a full range from sightseeing right up to hut-to-hut mountain treks. Take a look at their website on or give them a call on for more details or to order a brochure. Remember when you book to quote the name of our group, and we will then receive a contribution of 10 per person on UK holidays, 20 per person on short haul holidays, and 30 per person on long haul holidays. This extra funding could really make a difference to us 19
