Johnny and Charlotte Husky Swallow, Emma Coon Come, Minnie Awashish, Joseph and Laurie Loon, Bella Loon Petawabano, William and Emma Matoush, Pierre Haddad, Alain Cuerrier, Timothy Johns, Steffany Bennett, John Thor Arnason, Brian Foster, Matthew Coon Come, Gerry Wapachee, Monique Laliberté, Aissatou Bah, Rusty Cheezo, Johnny Tomatuk, Melissa Natachequan, Bella Moses Petawabano, Kathleen Wooton, Christine Connors, Bernadette Shields, Roger Weapinacappo, Florence Cheezo, Eva Louttit, Henry Moses, George Diamond, Edward Gilpin and Daniel Moses.
Open space question: Based on what we talked about, what does Eastmain need to do to build a healthier community?
OPEN SPACE: Traditional food Facilitator: Roger Weapinacappo and Daniel Moses Traditional food (cooked open fire) Growing natural vegetables (carrots, lettuce, potatoes) in the reserve All kinds (traditional) Wild berries (all kinds), herbal plants Control of blood sugar level Healthier (healthy eating) Healthy diet Less sickness, medical problems (less chemicals) Food can be used as traditional medicine Preservation (fruits and food) No preservatives (artificial sweeteners)
OPEN SPACE: MIND Daniel Mark-Stewart, Celina Wapachee Living in fear of diabetes Afraid of getting tested Living in denial Worrying all the time Getting tired after many years of taking medication No end in sight - does the medicine really work? Physical activity and positive thinking can help With age, worries increase More follow-up and support for patients - Patients lose motivation due to lack of check-up Nurse (diabetes specialist) The ability to comprehend diminishes with age Cooking, preparing traditional food requires a lot of salt CHR needed in Eastmain Lack of physical activity will only increase diabetes rate Nutritional food and information should be widely available
OPEN SPACE: FOOD Facilitators: Leslie Tomatuk, Juliet Weapinacappo, Priscilla Weapinacappo CON S Poor selection of healthy food It is cheaper to buy junk food than healthy food Lack of access to traditional food Changing of traditional roles (working women do not have time to prepare meals) Quicker to prepare processed than traditional food Prices are too high to eat healthy Decreased food quality due to transportation (too long to get the food to the community)
PRO S OPEN SPACE: FOOD Traditional food programs that would incorporate physical activity like hunting, teepee making, wood cutting and traditional food preparation Blueberry program Teaching traditional food preparation Ask local stores to advertise more healthy display, and have junk food in the back aisle, to sale a larger variety of fruits and vegetables Traditional classes & school lunch program to promote healthy eating among our children Awareness workshops on processed food Start early awareness in school for our children Ask cooperation from the restaurants to cut down poutine and all fast food Restaurant not to serve poutine for lunch (supper only) Ask local stores not to serve junk food to children during lunch hours
OPEN SPACE: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Facilitators: Wally Rabbitskin, Bessie Tomatuk Giving up old habits Lack of physical activity Young Trappers Program (CTA, CHB, Band) All year round Negotiate with employers for one not to lose wages Walking/bike/snowshoeing/cross country skiing trails Short/long canoe expeditions Role models Portage Teach the young about woodcutting During diabetes month, plan various physical activities for the community Family activities (family day(s))
OPEN SPACE: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Cultural camps for traditional teachings, demonstrations, cooking No vehicle day(s) - once a week Traditional teachings will be lost if we do not practice Dance lessons - square, hip, line At no cost activities, as much as possible Local (sports leagues for all ages) Challenges - local, regional Invite a qualified trainer to train local people Groups - biking, walking, scouts, etc. At work - physical activity time, witnessed, start 3 times/week and gradually increase Different individuals to plan and organize activities, to have variety
OPEN SPACE: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Make use of facilities/resources that are available Different organizations/entities organize activity once a week Sacrifice (people have to make sacrifice to do physical activity) No procrastination Bingo - seek a way to make it physical (i.e.bury bingo balls and people will seek for it) CHB to be role models/trainers; educate public about the importance of physical activity Traditional triathlon, annually, for all age groups
Next steps Send a report to the Chief and Council With the support of the Chief and Council, we will begin working toward forming a local Health/Wellness committee. A team from the University of Alberta will be here in April to consult with community members about food.
