Job and Fellowship Openings CDC/ATSDR Summer 2015 Environmental Health Internships The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) offer paid 10-week summer internship programs for students who are passionate about the environment, interested in human health, and curious about how they are linked. During the course of the internship, students are introduced to environmental health at the federal level through collaborative projects, experiential learning opportunities, environmental health presentations, journal clubs, field trips, brown bag lunches, and mentoring relationships at NCEH/ATSDR. Healthy, robust, beautiful cities where people want to live are critical to the protection of nature. As Evidence Mounts, Drumbeat for Walkable Streets Grows, by Robert Steuteville (Better Cities & Towns, December 23, 2014) the market and public sentiment has shifted and new tools like Walk Score are breaking the foundations of conventional traffic engineering. News Latino Urbanism Influences a Los Angeles in Flux (Los Angeles Times, December 6, 2014) story.html#page=1... Los Angeles, long a Latino city culturally and demographically, is beginning to resemble a Latino city in terms of how its streets and public spaces are designed. A program called People Street... makes it far easier for residents to add plazas, small parks and bike corrals to their neighborhoods. Inactivity 'Kills More Than Obesity' (BBC News, January 14, 2015) University of Cambridge researchers stated that 676,000 deaths each year were down to inactivity, compared with 337,000 from carrying too much weight. They concluded that at least 20 minutes of brisk walking a day would have substantial benefits for people of any weight. EPA Helps 22 Communities to Meet their Sustainability Goals and Foster Economic Development (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, January 27, 2015) b19f2d585257dda0050d855!opendocument EPA selected this year s recipients from among 121 applicants to the Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program. EPA staff and national experts will conduct one to two-day workshops in the communities that focus on the specific sustainability tool each community requested in its application to EPA.
