2 2 DRUIDS 2 Porthmadog 3 Druids winning streak finally came to an end against a determined Porthmadog side. Controversial refereeing decisions contributed to the result but ultimately uncharacteristic poor defending led to their downfall. Druids dominated the opening half hour but lacked the killer punch and when they finally did open the scoring through Adam Hesp, the lead lasted barely 2 minutes when Port equalised. Druids fell behind to a penalty 5 minutes before half time with everyone in the ground left scratching their heads as to why. This was the first of several strange refereeing decisions and although Druids equalised through Mike Pritchard on 60 minutes they were unable to raise their game enough and Porth sealed the game with a 71st minute winner. Druids cause was not helped with a second yellow card for Pritchard which led to his dismissal and the visitors keeper dealt comfortably with all Druids managed to throw at him. However results elsewhere meant that Druids maintained their position at the top of the league. DRUIDS RES 2 Gresford 1 Druids Reserves came from a goal down to overcome a strong Gresford Reserves. Trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes to go Alix Godfrey conjured up an equaliser and a brilliant strike from Sean Sanchez sealed the points and give the reserves their first win. 4 HUWS GRAY ALLIANCE HISTORY Part (Continued from previous issue) 4 DRUIDS JOIN THE LEAGUE With the League of Wales commencing in August 1992, the Cymru Alliance saw eight of its members leave for the national league, creating somewhat of a void in the more established competition. Newly formed Cefn Druids (created after a merger between Cefn Albion and Druids United), Rhos Aelwyd, Ruthin Town, Wrexham Reserves (all from the Welsh National League Wrexham Area), Knighton Town, Rhayader Town (both from the Mid Wales League) and Rhyl (Northern Premier League) filled the vacancies created by the formation of the League of Wales. Mid Wales League runners-up Morda United were thwarted in their bid to join the Cymru Alliance, when the FA prevented the Shropshire club becoming full members of the FAW, a condition of league membership. The battle for the championship was, for the majority of the season, a five-way race between Lex XI, Llansantffriad, Rhyl, Welshpool Town and Wrexham Reserves. As the campaign moved into the New Year, Rhyl, Welshpool and Wrexham Reserves began to pull away from their rivals, although Lex XI and Llansantffriad, who were still involved in the Welsh Cup and Intermediate Cup, had games in hand. The Saints eventually prevailed, winning promotion to the League of Wales, ahead of local rivals Welshpool, Rhyl and Wrexham Reserves. Llansantffriad claimed a double by beating Brecon Corries in the Welsh Intermediate Cup final, but were defeated by Newtown in the Central Wales Challenge Cup final in their attempt to land a treble. Despite finishing third, on the return to Welsh football, Rhyl overcame Gresford Athletic in the League Cup final, and reached the Welsh Cup final, where they lost 5-0 to Cardiff City - having defeated two League of Wales clubs (Connahs Quay Nomads and Haverfordwest County) en route to the National Stadium. With Llansantffriad continuing their rapid ascent towards the pinnacle of domestic football the club was only promoted from the Montgomeryshire Amateur League in 1990 they were replaced in the Cymru Alliance by Llanidloes Town, who were relegated from the League of Wales. With the league extended to 18 teams, there was no relegation at the end of 1992/93 Contact Us Postal Address:- Cefn Druids FC, The Rock Stadium, Rock Road, Rhosymedre, Wrexham. 6 ACADEMY REPORT Huws gray round up 6 Our under 12's hosted Chester City at the Rock on Thursday night. Coaches Matt Griffiths and Adam Hesp were fully aware of the task ahead playing a team that play against football league clubs most weekends, with our squad only been together a couple of months. Cefn Druids played some excellent football in the first 15 minutes and stopped Chester pressing for an early goal. Chester's pressure paid off going into the 2nd half 1-0 up but a lot of chances were created by our boys who failed to capitalize in front of goal, Chester got their second going into the 3rd half 2-0. The 3rd half was all Cefn Druids and they got a goal back through Cobie Lee taking the game into the 4th half 2-1. In the last half our boys tired and Chester showed their experience scoring 4 goals in the space of 10 mins. Coaches Matt Griffiths and Adam Hesp praised the boys performance against very good opposition. The potential is there to be worked on and we played some excellent football. Our under 15s travelled to Chester City today to take on their under 15's in what was the fourth fixture between the two sides in twelve months. Druids started the game with high tempo football and got their rewards after just 15 minutes, taking the lead through Leighton Kendrick. Chester hit back within 5 minutes with a clever taken goal from a player just released by Manchester United. The second half saw Cefn Druids dominate the game playing some excellent football. Harry Jones raced onto a through pass to slot home a cool finish putting us back into the lead 2-1. Coel Lamberts volley made the final score Chester City 1 Cefn Druids 3. Coaches Phil Bathers and Josh Millington couldn't hide their delight after the game saying its 2-2 in the series of games between the two clubs but we have to give full credit to our boys today, they played football the way football should be played, kept the ball very well and pressed Chester when they had possession, Chester are a fantastic team who are our benchmark of where we want our players to be, the result today is a massive achievement for our boys, everything we work on in training they took into today's game. Report by Phil Bathers Gresford Athletic recorded their first win since promotion, goal from Nathan Peate, Mike Latham and Sam Richardson giving them the points at Llanfair United Guilsfield fell to their first reversal of the season at Holywell Town. Dafydd Griffith headed Town ahead in the first half with Sam Litvhfield levelling the score after fifty eight minutes only for two penalties from Tom McElmeel to gave Holyhead their second win of the week A goal in each half from Mike Parker and Jack Kenny gave Prestatyn Town the points at Conwy Borough Denbigh Town led one nil at the break at Caersws with Mike Sharples on target. Kristain Pierce and a Carl Lamb double in the second half giving Town a good away win Last seasons player of the season Jamie Breese scored the only goal of the game at Flint Town United to give Caernarfon Town the points A tight match at Holyhead Hotspur were Buckley Town were the visitors was settled with a early strike by Damian Ketley Mold Alex took the lead six minutes before half time at Rhayader Town, Asa Hamilton levelling the score from the penalty spot after seventy seven minutes only for Hyden Cooper to give Alex the points two minutes from time 6 EVERY MONDAY NIGHT IS BINGO NIGHT IN THE SOCIAL CLUB.
