2 Goals for the session: 1. Explain what a key factor is and what they mean, then have group come up with 3 for each part of session. 2. Have athletes demonstrate the key factors they came up with within a game situation. 3. New group so ensure names are shared and learned. *Maybe do some headshots. Coaches to keep track of their groups progress throughout the session and adapt games/drills to suit the need of their group. Going forward should be in everything we do. Guest Coach Challenge Limit feedback to only key factors, do not over complicate. Reinforce points across and continue training. Ian and John Challenge Use guest coaches to empower athletes by using player led feedback.
3 Run, Catch, Pass Set up 1 Large Grid, 2 Small Grids Grid 1 Grid 2 Grid 3 (if needed) 3 Pass Games are played as 2 hand touch. Teams play offense and defence for 1min. Offense is trying to score but must pass the ball a minimum of 3 times before touching down. Both teams have rolling subs. If touched/ball dropped/forward pass etc. All players must go back to their starting line. Players can go again as soon as they ve touched their own line. Additional rules to be implemented later. After 1 min, teams switch. Each team goes twice. At the end of every minute, teams get 30 sec huddle with coach. Considerations: If you find that players are just passing 3 times before getting to the defence, shorten the length of the field. If this is still an issue, implement a 3 step rule, where they can only pass after they have made 3 steps forward with ball in hand (This will also encourage using depth as an attacking advantage).
4 Run, Catch, Pass Drill Set up Hands up 5m x 5m, Y-Pass (dependent on ability), Gauntlet 7m x 15m, 3 on 2 20m x 15m Gauntlet x 3 18 cones, 3 balls 12 Players Y-Pass x 3 18 cones, 6 balls 12 players Hands Up x 2 2 balls The idea is to set up all the grids prior, but only use 2 or 3 of them at a time. If we have a ton of numbers then we can utilize all 4 drills but we ll need to bring more balls. Split the groups between old and young and then depending on numbers split them further. If there are 4 decent sized groups then each would take on a drill and rotate clockwise once the timer is up. Coaches do not rotate, coaches will stay with drill so that the message is consistent across all groups. When talking to athletes or making adjustments, ensure we are referring to the key factors on page 2. 3 on 2 X2 16 cones, 4 balls Any number of players Any number of players Players should be given no more than 1 thing at a time to work on. For example, please do not tell them to run with their hands up AND look where they re passing. Get one thing nailed down first, then move to the next.
5 Run, Catch, Pass Hands up 5m x 5m, Y-Pass (dependent on ability), Gauntlet 7m x 15m, 3 on 2 20m x 15m Gauntlet Y-Pass Hands up 3 on 2 A B Gauntlet w/ pass 2 players start with ball along short side of grid on either side of starting cone (red). 1 is ball carrier and the other support. 2 other players stand with pads at 5m intervals. First defender stands between the 2 cones opposite where the ball carrier is. Ball carrier must use skills (evasive running) from last week to beat first defender. 2 nd defender has the full width and can defend either player. Attackers must find a way to score using footwork or passing. Y-Pass 1 person starts on each yellow cone (if more than 4, extra players line up behind top 2 cones). Person on bottom cone has 2 balls and feeds them gently to the person facing them on the middle yellow cone. That person alternates passing left and right to the top 2 players who are running onto the ball and catching it inside the red cone (players must run inside and straighten up before receiving pass). At the red cone, they pass ball back to feeder and back track to the yellow cone to go again (if more players, then next person goes in place of the player backtracking). Alternate positions every minute. Hands Up Coach has ball and stands facing the players who are organized in a semi circle no more than 90 degrees from the coach. All players start in an athletic position with hands up as if they are receiving a pass. The coach will kick (if too difficult, can pass) to random members of the group. If a player catches it they move up one space towards the A position. If a player drops it (or unreasonably doesn t catch it) they move all the way to the B position. Ball must immediately be passed back to the coach BEFORE the player changes positions. The person at the A position at the end of the game is the winner. Game is played for 90sec. 3 on 2 - Simple 3 attackers (w/ 1 ball) and 2 defenders start on the red cone. On the ball carriers signal, attackers and defenders run around their marker cone (green) and go forward. Attackers line up in each of the 3 channels, defenders set up in 2 of the channels and leave 1 open. Attack must make quick decisions to pass to player in open channel in order to score. To progress, have 2 further defenders go and set up behind first 2 defenders leaving a different channel open so the attack has to make 2 passes. Second line goes at the same time but does not advance forward until 1 st line is broken.
6 End of session Game Set up Full field set up within the soccer boxes Capture the flag 5 Players with pads surround a stack of balls in the circle. These defenders cannot leave the white line but can move around it at will. 8 Players start in the inner circle. 8 Players start in the outer area. Players on the inner circle must attempt to remove the balls from the centre circle/oval. If a player is tagged by a pad, they must run back and tag in someone from the outer area to try next. If a player gets a ball, they have to pass it out of the centre circle to someone on the inner circle who in turn has to pass it to someone in the outer area. Game is won, once all the balls have been moved to the outer area. If we have 40 players again, we will set up 2 smaller games based on the same idea. If it still doesn t work because of numbers we set up 2 games of end ball.
