ED S NOTE WATHINT ABAFAZI WATHINT IMBOKODO Mzansi Soccer Style is now on its third issue, and coincidentally it is also Women s Month and we thought it will be appropriate to dedicate this issue to the Sisters who are involved in the game of Soccer. The cover story is about one of the most accomplished lady who came and conquered the male dominated sport (Soccer) and excelled even to heights that many Males could not even reach. We pay tribute to a living Legend who went on to represent Mzansi at various levels, and did South Africa proud at National Team level where her skills were a marvel to watch. Today she is one of the prominent mentors of our up and coming Women players of our beautiful game, and she is involved with a team called Soweto Fabulous F.C as a couch of the junior Teams. Play Soccer, Make Peace is an article about soccer as a vehicle to unite warring factions in conflict areas of the African Continent. Reverent Jean Augustine Ghomsi is Assistant Secretary General of Universal Peace Federation UPF Africa, in charge Southern Africa FAN CORNER Bonny Moloi COMMENTS FROM THE WEBSITE Commented on General Thabeng Media, Folks, once more congratulations on your 2nd edition of Mzansisoccerstyle magazine. 5 mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine This column is dedicated to Women who have committed their contribution to the development of Soccer, and to tell own stories. Women in Soccer Fikile Cleopatra Sithole My name is Fikile Cleopatra Sithole, and was born and bred in the dusty streets of Soweto in Meadowlands (Ndofaya). I started playing soccer at a tender age of 6 years using rolled up plastic to make a soccer ball, and used to play with my late brother at home. My Brother and I were raised by our grandmother, unfortunately my brother passed on when I was 10 years old. Grandmother used fight with me about playing soccer, saying it a sport for boys and not girls and time went by she realised how serious I was with playing soccer and gradually accepted that I love soccer and started supporting me till her passing on in At the age of 10 I joined a boys team and went on to play for various teams below, Liverpool F.C Inter Africa F,C Explorus F.C Mercy Cosmos Rangers F.C I played in the boy s team in the Chappies Little League under 10 & 12 with Liverpool F.C, and I played alongside Arthur Zwane of Kaizer Chiefs and we grew up under the likes of previous legents like Andries Mpondo (Moroka Swallows), Ronnie Zondi (Orland Pirates) and Linda Buthelezi (Kaiser Chiefs). In 1989 Mr Mackson Giant Sambo who was employed by First National Bank, came with an idea of starting a girls team came to invite me and other girls that he knew that they were paying for boys teams to join the team that was going to play a curtain raiser for BOB Save Cup Final between Jomo Cosmos and Amazulu at Kings Park Stadium in Durban. When the girls congregated form different area, I was surprised at level of talent we had and were able almost immediately combined well during training; the level of skill was such that the best team has been put together in South Africa. The Team played well in Durban and all this resulted in very fine women s to date. On the 14th October 1989 Soweto Ladies F.C was born and was the only Ladies in the country and competed against boys teams and came out tops in some of those games. Soweto Ladies Football Club inspired the formation of ladies teams around the country. We used to play as curtain raiser for Kaiser Chiefs, and because I wore jersey no 15 and also that because our colours were Gold and Black it was only natural that Chiefs supporters supported us and gave me the nickname 16 Valve. This brought about by fact that I played like the Chiefs idol Doctor who was at the time my role model. 4

Story Continues... In 1993 the first national team (Banyana Banyana) was selected and I was one of those selected, in the same year we were invited to play in the youth tournament in Sweden for the Gothic Cup and we went to Denmark and played in the Dana Cup. These tournaments help with being sported by scouts attending the games and was sported and IN 1996 I joined a Swedish Team called Oxaback Mark on a season long contract with Sibongile Khumalo. While playing for Banyana Banyana Team, I got to represent my country 25 times (25 caps) and travelled to countries like, Swaziland Zimbabwe Zambia Nigeria Kenya England USA Egypt Morocco With the Soweto Ladies I played in Swaziland in the Fanfare and against the National under 21 team from Germany, and we played to a draw. I also played in the following leagues and tournaments, Sanlam Vodacom Sasol Discovery tournament. I am a founder member of the Soweto Ladies with the help of Mackson Giant Sambo, Ray Nxumalo and Themba Mathwasa, the founder players were as follows Gloria Hlalele Phumla Masuku Sibongile Khumalo Nelly Mthembu Patricia Kgaratsi When my playing days were over, my passion for football drove me to consider coaching and started attending the coaching courses as follows. Grass Roots Soccer Course (SAFA) Level 1 B Licence (SAFA) Introductory Level (KNVB) Teaching Skills in Football (KNVB) Premier Skills (British Embassy) Future Champs Course The courses I attended helped me a lot and got a chance to coach the following, Yashiva Jewish College Soweto Ladies Football Club Coached the under 13 s, 15 s. Coached under 19 s at S.A. Games in Polokwane. In 2009 I joined an NGO (Show Me Your Number) and it is an innovative non-profit organisation campaign using sport generally and Football to promote HIV Prevention and behaviour al change. The campaign is linked to the South African Football Players Union (SAPFU). Show me your number works with the current and former Professional Players in their campaign. I am currently the ambassador for Show me Your Number and Fair Play for Africa Since I joined SMYN (Show Me Your Number) I have learned more about HIV/AIDS, and accepted that HIV/AIDS is leaving, because I could not understand anything about the virus. After the loss of my sibling I wanted to learn more about it and it helped me to get to terms with the situation I was facing, because it is either you are infected or affected either way. To get more information I attended a workshop in September 2009 with Soul City Institute and trained as a counsellor for HIV/AIDS with JHpiego & SIYANQOBA (BEATIT). As a coach I like working with development and encourage our players to put more focus in their school and it must be their first priority, and take Soccer as a second priority because it is a short career and pursue with education since it s a life time career that nobody can take away from you SA vs. Kenya (Kenya) SA vs. Morrocco SA Soweto Diepkloof 4. 9 mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine This Feature will give outstanding Star players an opportunity to be profiled and exposed to the general public. It will feature both junior and senior footballers irrespective of gender. Footballer's Profile see that the Team is struggling during the game. Kabelo Malata (Friend) are around him even though he won t be playing for fewer than 17 next year. Tshegofatso Roto Mkhumbuza age 17 and in grade 11 at Fons Luminis Secondary School in Diepkloof, and started playing at age 6 and was recruited by a man called Olebogeng Itumeleng who collected all the boys in our street to come play soccer. I started playing properly when I was 9 years for a Team called Diepkloof Hellenic before it changed to Barcenal Football Club, and my coach is Shadrack Seleke since I like playing on the left wing, even though I sometimes play in the midfield especially when I We call Tshegofatso Roto because he just disappears at any time without anyone noticing that he is gone, and just reappears the same way he went. On the field of play we form a good combination, and we play well together. We have been playing together for 5 years and I am captain of the Team, currently we are playing together at the Soweto under 17 Selection Team and it s a good feeling and allows us to travel a lot and we enjoy it very much. Roto has temper that I think it s good for the aggression required in the game, and I think he will go far with his good play. Furthermore I would recommend him to a team like Kaiser Chiefs Juniors. Coach (Shadrack Seleke) Tshegofatso is called Roto because of his speed, and the fact that he has a tendency to disappear without notice. He is very talented and if I was to lose him, I would prefer to lose him to a team like Ajax Cape Town because they can allow him to go overseas. His parents are very supportive when it comes to him playing soccer, and whenever we need for the game they allow him to come play without difficulties. Roto is currently a game player and is able to change the direction of the game, and our game plans Ms. Beauty Mkhumbuza (mother) Tshegofatso started playing soccer at the age of six, and at age 10 he told me that he has joined a team in zone 4 Diepkloof. My priority for Tshegofatso is to focus on the School work because education is very important; tshegofatso told me that his priority is football and that he is also taking his lessons seriously because when he brings his report is very good showing that he works hard at school also. I think tshegofatso is committed to football, because he has also been to Baragwanath after breaking his bone because of soccer. 8

Tshegofatso is a very helpful child, because he can do any chores in the house from cleaning to washing his own clothes and even when it comes to soccer boots; he saves his school lunch money to buy the boots. He came home to tell me that he has been picked to play for the Soweto under 17 team, and I started then to realise that he must be a very good player to deserve being in a Soweto selection team and felt very proud of him. 12 mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine Life skills Coaching is meant to help and advice the Young readers of the Magazine, with matters of Peer pressure and self discipline. Life Skills Coaching WHAT IS A BELIEF? Beliefs are assumptions we make about the world and our values system stem from them. WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Our beliefs arise from what we see, hear, experience, read and THINK ABOUT. From our beliefs we develop an opinion (assumption) we hold to be true and unchanged which can either be true or false when compared with evidence, but hold true for us nonetheless. TYPES OF BELIEFS Our beliefs are split into two, being empowering beliefs and self-limiting Beliefs. Empowering beliefs help us to confidently venture into (new) opportunities and make positive changes in our lives. These beliefs gives us the confidence to face any adversities and challenges put before us with zeal and enthusiasm. Whereas the Selflimiting beliefs do the exact opposite, they keep us rooted in a particular position and situation. We see nothing but gloom and the fear of acting out our dreams rules us at this stage. We feel and accept defeat before any action is taken, which in the end we do not act and start believing 'we are not good enough'. YOU 11 Beliefs you do not want or like may have been created or forced down on you, whatever the reasons you have a CHOICE of either accepting the path chosen for you or start replacing the negative beliefs you have of yourself with positive ones and starting writing your own story and that will lead to a better and a more fulfilled you. What beliefs do you hold about: you/your family/ your environment (work/home)/ relationships/ capabilities/identity (the roles you play)/vision and mission (your purpose in life). Make a list for each and replace the negative beliefs with the ones you want and are willing to work towards achieving. REMEMBER Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your character and your character your destiny. 17 mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine Icons are those members of our society who have gone over the call of duty, to dedicate their lives to the Beautiful Game at developmental Level. This Feature will give them a stage to tell stories of their journey in Football. Icons Rudi Rider Mbele I was born and bred in Mofolo North, one of Soweto's townships. I started school at Gugu Lower Primary School in Mofolo South and it is where I started playing soccer, my female sport teacher, whose surname I've forgotten, was very knowledgeable about soccer. She is the one who launched my soccer career. I always wanted to be a striker but she made me a sweeper for some reason. I didn't have a nickname at the time. At one stage we played against a local school called Emisebeni Lower Primary and our strikers couldn't score the whole of the first half and most of the second half. I asked our goalkeeper to pass me the ball and decided to dribble the whole team including the goalkeeper and we won one nil. Afterwards, he gave me the nickname 'Ryder' which stayed me for the rest of my soccer career. My speed came in handy because I scored a lot of goals by outrunning defenders. My next school, Thulasizwe Higher Primary School, was located at Killarney, one of Soweto's townships and I soon became the star of school and its top goal scorer. I also found my other talent, sprinting in athletics and I ran 100m and 220m races and did very well, for the next 4 years, I was placed in the top 3. My speed came in handy because I scored a lot of goals by outrunning defenders. Another milestone was that I passed my grade 6 with a distinction and one of a few students who managed that feat. I did my grades 7 to 12 at Orlando West High School, which was a stone s throw from Thulasizwe. There were 3 divisions at Orlando West High, A, B and C and when I was in grade 7; I played for the C division and again scored more goals than everybody. The following year I was in grade 8, and I was promoted to the A division. This was the time I attracted the attention of many semi-professional and professional teams around Soweto. Within the next 2 years, I played for major Soweto teams, like Meadowlands Giant Aces, Moroka Rovers, a splinter group of Moroka Swallows and Zola Grasshoppers. The rivalry between Orlando West High School and Orlando East High School was like that of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. What made the rivalry intense was that some of the players of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs attended these high schools. Jomo Sono and Webster Lichaba are some of Orlando Pirates players who attended at Orlando East High School. Senzeni Ntsibande of Kaizer Chiefs, Judah Duiker of Moroka Swallows, Khulu 'Dancing shoes' Sibiya and Hilton Makhubu of Pimville United Brothers (PUBS), attended at Orlando West High School. The games took place at Phefeni grounds and they were attended by more than 10,000 people. The fans included the students and workers who would leave town early to attend the games, and most professional teams recruited their players in such schools. next page... 16

Moroka Swallows recruited Alfred 'KK' Lentsoane from Morris Isaacson. PUBS recruited George 'Best' Moore from Sekano Ntoana in Phiri Township. Colbert 'Des Bakos' Sobopha was also recruited by Orlando Pirates from Morris Isaacson High School. Khulu Sibiya ended up playing for Orlando Pirates and he also went on to being editor of the City Press. One of my best times in my life was spent at Orlando West High School; where my musical talent was nourished as I sang in different school choirs, the boys choir and the senior mixed choir. I sang lead vocals with people like Sibongile Khumalo and Mara Louw both of whom are now household names in South Africa. The Beaters were also formed at Orlando West during my time over there. Selby Ntuli and Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse were students at the time when they formed this group which went on to become HARARI. My political involvement cut short my stay at Wits University team which was coached by Eddie Lewis at the time. I left for New York in 1981 to attend the City University of New York (CUNY). I started at Baruch College which is part of CUNY, where I studied Business Administration. Baruch played in the CUNY League and I joined their soccer team which consisted of Germans, British, Americans, Jamaicans, Argentinians and Brazilians. For 3 years I was Baruch's top goal scorer and in 1985 I was voted into a CUNY All-Star team which went on to play against other squads in the USA. During this time, I also took coaching lessons at Brooklyn College. From 1981 to 1984, I played for Club Deportivo Aguila, an affliate of the New York's Spanish League. I was the leading goal scorer for 4 year from 1988 to 1990; I attended York College of CUNY to study finance. They were also an affiliate of the CUNY League. In 1990, we won the CUNY League and also got an award as the top goal scorer. I graduated in 1990 with a finance degree and in 2007, I was employed as the men's soccer coach and went on to win the league, making me the only South African who has won that league as a player and as a coach. I returned home during the world cup in 2010 and after that I started Rudi Raves, named after a team in the US called New York Ravens especially for developmental purposes. Rudi Ravens specialises in the Kasi Tournament in the off season, and eventually by a status of semi- professional team to start off with and build to a professional team. Future plan is to form a South African Student Team to tour overseas, as way of marketing their talent in the US to attract scholarships and play for the university. The idea is to play 3-4 games against the university teams. This is part of a similar concept that was done by the late Sir Stanley Matthews in 1974, who took a selection of the High School soccer team from Soweto to tour Brazil and other countries to showcase the SA Talent. The idea also is to encourage the learners to do well in their studies, so as to improve on the possibility of being awarded a scholarship to one of the American Universities during the tour itself. The plan is to conduct trials for the age groups at Nike centre in partnership with the Soweto Football Association. 17

Secure the interpassing To avoid combats To outplay the opponents To create numerical superiority near the ball Fast interpassing in order to come into a scoring position Hola speak to you in the next issuemzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine Hi Soccer lovers, I would like to greet all the readers of Mzansi Soccer Style and to remind the coaches and soccer lovers of Mzansi Soccer, that we are helping players to develop and work on their skills to achieve good results as a team. We now begin with our series of topics, On The Ball 1. Team Tactics Attack is the best form of defence; this should be the maxim of a team in general approaches. Attacking football is played even more by a league system when you collect three points through winning while only one point is gained after a draw. The quicker the change to attack takes place, the greater the chance is of penetrating the opponent s dis-organised defence. It is important to open up quickly and exploit the open spaces. 4. Attacking Play- against a numerical Superiority 2.The Build- up Attack Accuracy and safety are important factors of building up an attack before a vital surprise with a burst of acceleration is brought in to create good changes. Secure preparation of attack To look for and being courageous in finishing Securing the man on the ball with a possibility to play the ball back Having the courage to dribble How Strikers Create Space and Score during Playing Time Tactics It is a proceeding in a planned and target orientated manner with clever choice and implementation of available means and possibilities by the individual players, a group or the whole team. General Objectives The scoring and the prevention of goals, through skilful and successorientated attacking and defending behaviour of all players. The concept of understanding the game, can be equated to the player s knowledge of the proper way and style of play to be adopted with or without possession of the ball. Understanding of the game has, however also a further meaning; that the player s knowledge of the basics of General Tactics the player s action must be out with simplicity, god players distinguish themselves through simplicity. The basic formation of the Team must be kept in place, if defenders move forward; one of the midfielders must fall back as cover. Short passes in triangular patterns or wall passes followed by unexpected changes in direction in order to find spaces and to create goal scoring chances. This approach to the game will make sure that, the ball is lost as seldom as possible but it can only be utilised by the teams with good skills and is only effective if the speed can be raised or lowered at the precise moments. If the opponent s sixteen metre area is overcrowded, the less space each individual player will have; then it is better to make good use of the wings. A cross can be played in front of the goal or out of the opposite wing. 3. Counter Attack A counter attack involves a team which has just regained possession of the ball, playing it quickly to wellplaced team mates, to give them a chance of creating a goal scoring opportunity before the opposing defence has had time to re-organise. 5. Attacking Play against opponents in equal number To create a space for the team mate in possession of the ball. Depth & width in attack for possibilities to play the ball backwards and in front. Changing position for the running free team mate. Playing the ball into the run of the free opponent Keeping the ball possession by moving with the ball when the team mate is no yet free to receive the ball. Creating numerical superiority near the partner in possession and by quick support and interpassing. 6. Attacking Play against opponents in numerical inferiority Ishmael Khosa 18

Since then(1993 April) he became involved with the club until currently where the club has 7 members in the management and seven divisions. They believe in co-ownership of the team whereby himself and Mr Ben Lethoko are the officials owners and all the members of the club have the right to own and assist in the administration of the club. Financially he assist the club from my own as there is no sponsor which assist us. Well the ex-players do help specially when it comes to off seasons competitions. The Prezza (club owner) is the person who owns the team and usually funds all activities from own pocket, these are the people who keep Kasi Soccer going and contribute greatly to the development of the Game in the Townships and their dedication knows no limits and will stop at nothing because of their love for the game. Prezza The Man Behind Movers Football Club Currently he serve in the executive committee of Soweto Football Association(SFA) and also in Southern Zone Local Football Association the affiliate of SFA he is the chairperson of the competitions committee. He works at Newgate College as school administrator and help in sports coordination at the school. Currently he is busy with two projects that will help all school going players to achieve immensely academically, players not only from his team but also from the surrounding areas and Soweto at large. The second one being facilitating for all the clubs in their zone to be run professionally and get some sponsorship for them. SOWETO UNITED MOVERS FC The Team s purpose is to make sure that young stars are given an opportunity to express themselves through their god given talent. Two do this by maintaining and fostering youth soccer for the recreation and well-being of the youth of the community. Through its inception in 1993 April Movers Football Club (MFC) thrives for the development of children through sport. We are the members of Soweto football league where our senior division partake. Our junior division participate in junior leagues in our zone (southern local football association) which is an affiliate of Soweto football association. Since its inception the team has gone through some challenges whereby we had to make sure that all players are attending school no matter their social challenges, through this it has emerged as an inspiration to our competitors and supporters as well. Through all this stages we have gone through some exciting mergers in our existence the most successful one s being with Senaoane gladiators in 2007 and Soweto united in 2013.Hence our junior s teams are referred to as Soweto united and our senior team as Movers F.C. The mission of the club is plan, initiate, develop and implement a structured and progressive football academy that will be a nursery to South African football. This will enable the club to improve the standard of play and performance of players and technical ability of all members as we will have to have refresh consistently our knowledge of coaching, administration and playing. The greatest goal that will make the team accessible to the community will be the professionalism, organisation and profile of the club so that all members of the community will be involved. 20

As our vision the club will promote, develop, foster football in and around our area where success is judged not by winning but being a participant. The junior division s vision is to see all the parents and community in general commit to the foiled and supporting our players their children to have a sense of identification. And encouraging young boys to play football at highest level as individuals and collectively as well. The senior players will always show and set the positive standard of personal behaviour, discipline and commitment. The triple p, triple c and triple d motto are what the club keeps going as we subscribe to the world of triple E. Fact file: The officials that help keep the team running Patrick Moroanyane and Ben Lethoko (administrators) Mpho Modise, Reginald Madikane and Senzo Sibisi (technical team) Lucky and Jan (marketing and promoting the club) Progressed players from the team The club has produced players to semi and professional ranks: Godfrey Mokoena, joseph Kibe, Sibusiso Nhlapo, Irvin Mhlambi and the current Kaiser Chiefs and Bafana Bafana player SiphiweTshabalala. 23 mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine This column is dedicated to Women s football focusing on reporting and all aspects of the game. Women s Flair and Fairness Women's football in South Africa was started in the 1960s during the Apartheid era. Orlando Pirates Women's Football Club and Mother City Girls were among the first women's soccer clubs formed in This is a question I posed to the many soccer lovers I know out there. Not one could give even one teams name of women in soccer past and present, including my father who is a walking encyclopaedia when it comes to soccer, I guess his knowledge extends to the male side of the sports. Goes to show how much interest there is in women football. Women soccer gained popularity in the 1990s, when the first national women's team was formed. Although the popularity of women's football is increasing in the country, support for men's soccer is still greater than that of women's and this is worrying fact. Being one who attends many soccer games it has come to my attention that women s football get minimum if not none support at tournaments that take place in the townships. Come to think about it I know of no woman football tournaments that take place. Maybe it s my ignorance but I blame it on information spread. It s not like woman aren t playing football somewhere in our greater Johannesburg it just that it s not marketed as well as our male counterparts in the sports The one time I came across women teams playing, I was told they started in the morning where crowds had not even yet gathered to watch them play. Or the crowds did get the information but where not interested enough to attend. This makes you wonder if women soccer clubs have any supporters the way male teams have. I bet you my last cents that women teams have as much flair and style with the ball as your Shakes and Mberezas in the game. But we don t give them a chance to witness such. It makes me wonder, would organisers put up the same amount of price money for women clubs who would play at the tournament if organised, or would they get the paltry amount? Are there any sponsors interested enough to support these clubs if a tournament was put together? This also raises the issue facilities. One has noticed that in terms of facilities in most instances womenn are not accommodated. I have visited many tournament that take place during the year and it seems that washroom facilities are not provided both for women and men. The difference is that men can make a plan as we have all seen, even though it s illegal. As a woman at these grounds when nature calls your options are limited. What if we have women clubs playing are they expected to change in public like the male counterparts do? Its time woman and football are taken as seriously as the men in the sport, it s time that the agents and marketing and PR organisation put as much effort in spreading the information about the information re woman soccer. It s time that we have a woman PSL league that garners as much support and excitement as all the other 16 teams in our current PSL. This is the 21st century and woman are just as good at playing the beautiful game as much as men and its time that we recognise that Football is an activity that has evolved over the years. Gone are the years where it was viewed and accepted as a male sport. Over the years Football has seen an increasing interest in the sport by woman and not only for the rippled six packs we see amongst players but as a sport that we genuinely enjoy and love that others have even taken up playing it and being successful at it aka Banyana Banyana. Its time as crowds, organisers and marketers we evolve as well and start considering about our female counterparts in the sports. I for one I making it a priority to start searching and attending woman games that are being played not just because I am woman but because I know they put in as much hard work and training to play this sport and all they deserve is a little effort from us, as much as we give other tournaments effort. 24 mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine Play Soccer Make Peace! is being well received in each of the countries. Each country has its own particular situation and each WANGO representative contributes his or her own unique perspective and talents to the project. Play Soccer Make Peace 23 The World Association of Non- Governmental Organization (WANGO) firmly believes that Play Soccer Make Peace, and can give support and impetus to NGOs dedicated to serving and uplifting their community in peace and goodwill. With the goal to encourage the development and training of youth soccer teams within forty-four countries worldwide, the central feature of the project is the creation of a tournament to be conducted in each of the countries during which eight selected soccer teams compete. Monetary awards are given to all the competitors to help develop soccer in their area. WANGO representatives in each of the target forty-four nations are asked to assume a key role of responsibility in establishing Play Soccer Make Peace! in their nation. They have a commitment to the well-being of the community, and possess valuable skills and understanding that can be applied in carrying out the project. The representatives will act as catalysts to energize existing relationships and forge new partnerships to launch the project, as well as gather a wide diversity of people to help facilitate the event. Play Soccer Make Peace! touches the vast gamut of sectors in a society, including the youth, local communities, NGOs as well as the local and national governments. NGOs and Soccer Soccer can be played by any small group of players, but it takes organization, hard work and discipline to shape the group into a team, and to manage, sponsor and schedule games between competing teams. There are game rules and codes of conduct to follow, and emotions to control. In line with this, Play Soccer Make Peace! emphasizes adherence to ethical principles and codes of behaviour in order to help guide the players, build cooperation within the team and encourage respect between the teams. The selected soccer teams must agree to pursue and maintain these principles and codes. The teams' accomplishments are recognized in the tournament. Even the runners-up are awarded significant prize money. By becoming a member of the Play Soccer Make Peace! community, the soccer players and teams can work with NGOs to help to multiply a peace culture throughout the soccer leagues and associations of their country. A growing worldwide community of youth soccer players and teams will result. The soccer project, Play Soccer Make Peace! is putting in place the necessary framework and resources to encourage this. Mr. Taj Hamad, Secretary General of WANGO and UPF, noted several similarities that NGOs share with soccer. The first of these is teamwork. In order to win a soccer game, the players need to cooperate together as a team. In order for an NGO to work successfully, the members need teamwork within their organization, and need to work harmoniously with others in their community. A second is fair play. The highest ideal in sports is to play fair. The same element is necessary for an NGO to operate in an ethical manner in order to be trusted and to establish peace and justice within the society. Endurance is a third similarity between soccer and NGOs. In order to play well, soccer players need endurance, perseverance, and the spirit to never give up. It often takes great effort to score even a single goal. Soccer players always need to constantly regroup and reorganize in order to mount the next offensive. NGOs need to make ceaseless effort time and time again, never giving up, and always looking to improve and move forward. A fourth similarity is youth. Soccer is a game for the young! At least, the young at heart, like Pelé. It takes great energy. Great idealism and youthful energy also needed by NGOs to accomplish their goals and mission. It is work for the young at heart. Play Soccer Make Peace! is moving quickly toward achieving its goal of reaching 44 nations. In July 2004, Nigeria, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo introduced and successfully launched the first Play Soccer Make Peace! Tournaments. Six additional were held in Estonia, Guyana, Liberia, Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Zambia during September Play Soccer Make Peace! is being well received in each of the countries. Each country has its own particular situation and each WANGO representative contributes his or her own unique perspective and talents to the project. Plans are being made to replicate and sustain the project in each country. A report on Play Soccer Make Peace! was given at the WANGO Annual Conference in Budapest highlighting the project details and the progress of the tournaments, past, present and future. From the next article we will give some examples of tournaments and their impacts in the respective country. Rev. Jean Augustin Ghomsi is Assistant Secretary General of Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Africa in charge of Southern Africa. Rev. Jean Augustin Ghomsi

mzansi soccer style Kasi Soccer Magazine This column is dedicated to Women s football focusing on reporting and all aspects of the game. Women s Soccer I am Calphyne Kubheka, I was born in 1987 June 02 at Sebokeng Hospital, I was raised by a single parent Cyprieline Kubheka as the only child. I grew up in Orange Farm; I lived with my grandparents and my three cousins. Then in 2000 I moved to Lake Side, which is where I currently living with my mother. I attended my primary education at AMSAI Primary School. In 2000, I attended my secondary education at Rutasetjhaba Secondary School and completed my matric in After matric I didn t know what I wanted to do, so my Uncle persuaded me in to studying Electrical Engineering and he financed my school fees and at that time my mother was not working. I did the course and I could not finish my N4 due to financial problems. I had to look for a job after I dropped out but it was not that easy because people would say I am too young and I have to go back to school, at that time what I needed was a job to help my mother at home. Things didn t turn out as I planned nor wished because life out there is not easy especially when you don t have qualifications, so I struggled a lot until I was at a point where I wanted to give up. My mother told me not to; she motivated me and gave me hope. Definitely things turned the other way around and my first job came from Mr Price as a casual for almost two years. While working in Mr Price I heard from the radio in 2009 that Sedibeng Referee s Academy is looking for female referees and I thought of giving it a try. I enquired about it and became interested, I went for my first class and I wanted to know more. I went for theory and training for almost two to three months. Afterwards I had my first match for (LFA) Local Football Association. After a year or so, I underwent my fitness test and I passed. I went to the next level officiating for a Sasol league for the past six years. 24

Challenges that I encounter as a female referee The challenges that I come across sometimes when I am officiating guys games they underestimate me and make a fuss and, I have had it all but nothing I can t handle. Even when officiating for women football it is also challenging because women underestimate me as a young woman referee but with my experience I just know how to handle them. At this current point I can officiate a match irrespective of whether its men or women. Aspiration for growth I would like to improve on my fitness level and be able to challenge refereeing at high levels like PSL, and on a global stage would like to officiate for CAF and proceed further and officiate at FIFA games like World Cup games. Furthermore I would like to attend further referee s causes to open doors for me to advance my career as a women referee, because it is what I have chosen as livelihood. Me at the gym Monday to Friday I work in a gym called Slater Health Club as a gym instructor and I am enjoying every moment while at work. I do Spinning and Aerobics. This helps me to keep fit for the refereeing job as it requires a high fitness level to keep up with the players during the game. I am also studying part time for the Nutrition and Fitness Certificate. Hobbies To be quite honest my two jobs had become my hobbies. I love working in a gym and I also love wearing my referee uniform and being in charge of the game. 25
