THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP FIFA BEACH SOCCER WOLRD CUP 2015 AFC QUALIFIER QATAR The FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup AFC Qualifiers produced a number of shocks and surprises as the tournament, which determined Asia s three representatives in the finals in Portugal as well as Asia s champions, returned to the Katara Beach in the Qatar capital for the second time, with Oman emerging victorious ahead of traditional powers Japan and I.R.Iran. Oman, runners-up in 2011, took continental glory for the first time by defeating 2013 runners-up Japan 3-2 on penalties after the final was locked at 1-1 at the end of overtime, with the Gulf Sultanate booking their place in the semi-finals as well as claiming first Asian ticket to the 2015 Beach Soccer World Cup finals with a 5-4 extra-time victory over Lebanon. Oman advanced to the semis having swept aside China 7-2 in the quarter-finals, which they reached by topping Group A with a 100% record. The eventual champions were joined in the knockout stage by second-place Bahrain, while it was a disappointing campaign for hosts Qatar, who lost all three of their group stage matches including a shock 6-5 loss to debutants Laos. sixth time, and their class shone through in the thirdplace playoff as the I.R.Iranians ran out 8-3 winners, recording their second triumph over the Lebanese following their 3-2 victory in the opening match of Group D. I.R.Iran s experience also told in the quarter-finals when they ran out 6-1 winners against the United Arab Emirates, who ended the tournament on a positive note by defeating China 5-1 to finish fifth, while Uzbekistan, who defeated the UAE 6-5 to finish top of Group C ahead of the 2007 and 2008 Asian champions, finished their campaign in seventh place following their 3-2 overtime victory over Bahrain. A number of players caught the eye during the fiveday competition but none more so than Ozu Moreira, who was Man-of-the-Match in every game he played in to win the MVP award for the second successive tournament after claiming the accolade in Ozu Moreira s team-mate Takasuke Goto took the top scorer award courtesy of weighing in with more assists than Moreira and Vietnam s Bui Tran Tuan Anh, with the trio all scoring eight times. Japan also advanced to the last eight with a 100% record, which they continued into the knockout stage with a quarter-final victory over Bahrain (5-2) and then a tightly-contested semi-final triumph over defending I.R.Iran (5-4), as the two protagonists from the 2013 final renewed acquaintances in Doha. Having lost their semi-final, I.R.Iran needed to defeat Lebanon if they were to reach the World finals for a 13

16 STORY OF THE TOURNAMENT

AFC BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP March 2015 TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS Story of the Tournament MATCH DAY 1 UAE 7-5 IRAQ The UAE made a winning start to their quest for a third continental title as hat-tricks from Hasan Ali and skipper Ali Hassan Karim propelled the 2007 and 2008 Asian champions to a 7-5 defeat of Iraq in their Group C curtain raiser. The opening match of the competition was marked by a flurry of goals shortly after Thai referee Suwat Wongsuwan referee kicked things off with Hasan Ali getting the first goal of the tournament with two minutes played before scoring his second two minutes later to restore the UAE s lead after Ali Joudah Habeeb had netted a third-minute equaliser for Iraq. Adel Ali found the net in the fifth minute before Hasan Ali completed his hat-trick to see the UAE round off the first period with a healthy 4-1 advantage. Ali Hassan Karim bagged two of his treble in the second period (13th and 17th) while Iraq s Abullah Suhail also struck twice as the UAE went into the final third leading 6-3. After Ali Hassan Karim completed his hat-trick in the 29th minute, a 32nd minute penalty from Hussein Jabar, who had reduced the deficit with his first of the game five minutes earlier, was not enough to deny the UAE a winning start. OMAN 3-2 BAHRAIN Oman football legend Hani Al Dhabat scored the opening goal as the Gulf Sultanate kicked-off their Group B campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Bahrain. Al Dhabat showed he is just as capable of finding the net on the sand as he is on the grass when the former national team star, who netted 22 times in 2001 to become that year s leading international goal scorer, gave Oman an 11th minute lead with the only goal of the first period. Jalal Al Ainani doubled Oman s advantage six minutes into the second period but Ayoob Nasseb Salem s strike three minutes later and Abdulla Abdullatif Al Abdulla s leveller just after the half-hour mark looked to have earned Bahrain a share of the spoils. However, seconds before the final buzzer Yahya Al Araimi struck to give Oman all three points. CHINA 5-5 VIETNAM (3-2 PSO) China, who have participated in every edition of Asia s qualifying tournament s for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, needed penalties to pick up their first point of the 2015 AFC Beach Soccer Championship, with a 3-2 penalty shootout victory seeing off a resilient Vietnam after the two sides were locked a 5-5 at the end of overtime. A virtuoso display from Bui Tran Tuan Anh looked to have given Vietnam all three points when he netted his fifth of the match, with his 26th minute penalty making it 5-4 to the ASEAN side after he traded goals with Liu Yisi (1st and 24th), Chen Xiaowei (7th) and Wan Chao (25th). But Wan s second of the match four minutes after Bui Tran had scored for the fifth time, following the 16

THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP Vietnamese player s goals in the 3rd, 4th 11th and 23rd minutes, sent the match into overtime and with neither side able to add to the tally the game went into penalties, which the Chinese won after Nguyen Thanh Dat had missed the sixth spot kick. JAPAN 5-3 KUWAIT Ozu Moreira netted a hat-trick as Japan went to the top of the Group B standings with a 5-3 win over Kuwait. Moreira scored the first of his treble in the 11th minute to restore Japan s lead after Ali Al Saif s 8th minute strike had cancelled out Takasuke Goto s fifth minute opener. Three goals in the final minute saw the first period end all even at three apiece, with Abdulatif Al Hamad levelling the score at 2-2 before Kuwait equalized for the second time when Al Saif scored his second of the match just seconds after Moreira had bagged his brace. Al Saif s goal transpired to be the last time Kuwait would get on the score sheet with a 13th minute Goto penalty and Moreira s third, an acrobatic bicycle kick scored in the 21st minute, saw Japan s Marcelo Mendes get the better of Kuwait s Alex Domingos Braga in the battle of the Brazilian coaches. QATAR 5-6 LAOS Laos pulled off the shock of Matchday 1 as the tournament newcomers defeated the AFC Beach Soccer Championship hosts 6-5 to hand the ASEAN nation a winning debut in their first ever FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup qualifier. Mohamed Hashim Idress (19th), Al Sharqi (20th) and a 21stminute Nanthal Savatdy own goal put the Group A hosts 5-3 up going into the third and final period. But after Laos had levelled with two goals in the 29th minute from skipper Tona Bounmalay and a second from Bountathip, Chiu completed his hat-trick and sealed the historic victory with the last goal of the game a minute from the final buzzer. IRAN 3-2 LEBANON Asian Beach Soccer champions I.R.Iran made a winning start to the defence of their continental title but were made to work hard for their 3-2 win over Lebanon. The Lebanese, coached by I.R.Iranian Karim Moghaddam, broke the deadlock midway through the first period, before Ahmed Grada s eighth minute opener was cancelled out in the 13th minute by Mohammadali Sadeghi with what was the only goal of the second period. Farid Boulokbashi put I.R.Iran 2-1 up with a 29th minute penalty before Mohammad Ahmadzadeh s 35th minute strike gave a little bit of breathing space for I.R.Iran, although a Mohamad Halawi goal seconds later ensured it was nervous finish for the Asian champions. Chiu Nonmay put Laos on the front foot after three minutes with the first of his hat-trick but the Laotians lead would last just 120 seconds, with Hamad Al Sharqi drawing the home side level. Parity lasted only two minutes with Souksakhone Bountathip giving Laos a 2-1 lead which Chiu extended with his second four minutes into the second period. Qatar hit back immediately through evergreen skipper Jafal Al Kuwari, who retired from the 11-aside game in 2009 prior to becoming Team Manager of 2011 AFC Champions League winners Al Sadd, before 17

AFC BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP March 2015 MATCH DAY 2 UZBEKISTAN 6-5 UAE Two Jafar Irismetov goals in the space of a minute at the end of the third period denied the UAE their second Group C win, as Uzbekistan edged the twotime Asian champions 6-5 although the defeat proved not to be too costly for the 2007 and 2008 winners, who were guaranteed at least a second-place finish in three-team table. Ali Mohammad s 10th minute goal gave the UAE a slender advantage to take into the second period but after Uzbekistan were brought back on level terms courtesy of a Haitham Mohamed s 20th minute own goal the initiative swung in favour of the Central Asians, with Irismetov grabbing the first of his hat-trick (21st) and Tokhir Abdurazzakov (24th) taking their tally to three, while Mohamed Muftah scored the UAE s second goal just seconds from Abdurazzakov netting the Uzbeks third. But the UAE dominated the third period and after skipper Ali Hassan Karim struck shortly after the restart with his fourth of the campaign, Haitham Mohammad atoned for his earlier error by making it 4-3 to the UAE on the half-hour mark. Ali Mohamed extended the UAE s lead in the 31st minute but after Sarvar Kholmurodov reduced the deficit just seconds later, Irismetov struck twice in the 33rd minute to complete the come-from-behind win. LAOS 3-8 OMAN Oman thrashed Laos 8-3 with Yahya Mabyoua Al Araimi scoring Oman s opening goal as early as the second minute. The Omanis duly charged further ahead with Al Araimi again providing the impetus by doubling his tally on 15 minutes. Abdullah Masoud Salim (18th), skipper Hani Al Dhabat (20th) and Ghaith Abdullah Sebeit (23rd) added to the lead, before Laos captain Tona Bounmalay aided the Omani cause by scoring a own goal on 23 minutes. Laos scored twice courtesy of Nanthaly Savatdy s double (29th and 30th), but Mandhar Hilal Hamed Al Araimi s penalty kick and late strike from Sebeit saw Oman run out comfortable winners. KUWAIT 3-4 CHINA Kuwait s chances of a place in the quarter-finals of the 2015 AFC Beach Soccer Championship ended after Cai Weiming s 33rd minute strike gave China a 4-3 win and consigned the Gulf nation to their second Group B defeat. Wan Chao opened the scoring in the second minute but Kuwait hit back almost immediately through Mohammad Bu-Abbas as the two sides ended the first period on an even keel. Ali Al Saif made it 2-1 in favour of the Gulf side only for two goals within the space of a minute from Liu Yisi (24th) and Cai (25th) to give China the upper hand. Mohammed Hajeyah levelled the match in the 31st minute but an evenly-fought contest would be settled two minutes later when Cai scored his second and China s fourth, putting the East Asians on course for 18

THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP a place in the last eight. JAPAN 3-2 VIETNAM Japan set up a top-of-the-table clash with China following a 3-2 victory over a spirited Vietnam side, a result which confirmed the East Asian duos place in the last eight following China s 4-3 win over Kuwait in the earlier Group B fixture. Ozu Moreira and Takasuke Goto were on target in the second and fourth minutes respectively as the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup ever-presents threatened to run riot against a Vietnamese side that were narrowly defeated on penalties by China in their Group B opener. Japan struck for a third time in the first period but Takuya Akaguma s 11th minute goal would be the last time that the Vietnamese defence would be breached as the South East Asians made the twotime continental champions work hard for the three points that took them top of the table. After a goalless second period Le Ngoc Phuoc gave Vietnam hope when he pulled one back in the 27th minute before a Tran Vinh Phong strike three minutes later ensured a nervous finish for Japan. BAHRAIN 6-1 QATAR Qatar crashed to their second straight defeat as the tournament hosts were hammered 6-1 by a Bahrain side that thrust themselves back into contention for a place in the last eight following their 3-2 defeat by Oman. when Rashed Jamal completed his hat-trick with the sixth goal, with a victory that set up a winner-takes-all clash with Laos to determine who would join Oman in the quarter-finals. THAILAND 2-3 LEBANON Lebanon picked up their first points of the campaign as the Cedars bounced back from a narrow defeat to I.R.Iran in the Group D opener with a 3-2 overtime win over Thailand. The game got off to a flying start with three goals inside the first two minutes with Haitham Fattal scoring twice for Lebanon either side of Komkrit Nanan s leveller for the Thais. Komkrit came to Thailand s rescue for the second time when he equalized in the 18th minute with the goal that would ultimately force overtime, as neither side was able to make the most of the chances they created during the remainder of regulation time. And just as they were at the start of the match, Lebanon were quickest out of the blocks in overtime, with skipper Mohamad Halawi scoring the decisive goal one minute into additional time to give the men from the Middle East the two points and confirmed I.R.Iran s place in the last eight. Abdulla Abdullatif Al Abdulla scored his second of the campaign having found the net in the loss to the Omanis with the only goal of the first period before his sixth-minute opener was supplemented by the first of three from Rashed Jamal (17th) and Jasim Rashed Mubarak (24th) as Bahrain took a 3-0 lead into the third period. Qatar s hopes of a comeback began to diminish just one minute into the third period when Rashed Jamal scored his second before Abdulla Abdullatif Al Abdulla also bagged his brace as Bahrain extended their advantage to 5-0 in the 29th minute. Jafal Al Kuwari fired home a spectacular consolation for the hosts on the half-hour mark but it was Bahrain that would have the final say in the scoring stakes 19

AFC BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP March 2015 MATCH DAY 3 IRAN 8-1 THAILAND Thailand s hopes of a place in the quarter-finals were comprehensively ended by I.R.Iran, as the continental champions hammered the ASEAN side 8-1 to top three-team Group D ahead of Lebanon. Needing a victory to ensure a place in the knockout stage, things started badly for the Thais who found themselves 4-0 at the end of the first period after early goals from goalkeeper Seyed Peyman Hosseini (3rd) and Farid Boulokbashi (4th) were supplemented in the eighth minute when both Hassan Abdollahi and Mohammad Ali Sadeghi got their names on the scoresheet. Boulokbashi extended I.R.Iran s lead in the 17th minute and after Mohammad Moradi Farahbadi scored the first of his double two minutes later, Thailand finally got off the mark when Vitoon Tapinna found the net. But Vitoon s goal was all the Thais would get from the one-sided match as last year s Asian beach soccer champions added another two goals through Farahbadi (33rd) and captain Ali Naderi Hosseinabadi (34th). QATAR 0-8 OMAN Qatar bowed out of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup qualifying competition without a win following an 8-0 humbling at the hands of Group A table-toppers Oman. Ahya Mabyoua Al Araimi opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Ghaith Abdullah Sebeit doubled Oman s advantage with the first of his four-goal haul. Sebeit scored his first of the game in the last minute of the first period before netting his second and Oman s third on the quarter-of-an-hour mark. A minute later Abdulla Masoud Salim got his name on the score sheet before skipper Hani Al Dhabat kept up his goal-a-game ratio when the Oman 11-a-side legend found the net in the 26th minute to add to the goals he scored against Laos and Bahrain. Yaqoob Rabia Al Alawi bagged his first of the tournament three minutes later but the final say would go to Sebeit who scored twice with two minutes left to go as Oman advanced to the quarter-finals with a 100% record. JAPAN 5-0 CHINA Japan stormed into the last eight with a 5-0 defeat of China that saw the Asian beach soccer powerhouse advance with a 100% record following victories over Kuwait and Vietnam but Marcelo Mendes side left it late to stamp their authority on the match, with three of their goals coming in the final three minutes. Takuya Akaguma sent Japan on their way to their third successive Group B win when he opened the scoring after just two minutes before Takasuke Goto doubled the advantage three minutes into the second period to maintain his record of scoring in every group stage game. China held out until the 33rd minute when Ozu Moreira matched Goto s achievement of scoring 20

THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP in each game when the Japan skipper made it 3-0 before Goto put the gloss on the win with goals in the 34th and 36th minutes to round off the 5-0. BAHRAIN 8-2 LAOS A four-minute Ayoob Naseeb Salem hat-trick and two goals with two minutes remaining at the end of the third period saw Bahrain confirm their place in the quarter-finals of the with an emphatic 8-2 victory over Laos. Rashed Jamal broke the deadlock with the first of his brace in the fifth minute while team-mate Thani Salem Thani and Laos skipper Tona Bounmalay were on target in the ninth minute as the first period ended 2-1 in favour of Bahrain. Opening scorer Rashed Jamal scored his second and Bahrain s third in the 17th minute with the only goal of the second period before the floodgates opened in the final stanza as the Gulf Kingdom capitalised on a tiring Laos side. Ayoob Naseeb Salem effectively ended the match as a contest with three goals in a blistering four-minute spell (27th, 29th and 31st) before three different players got their names on the score sheet in the 34th minute, with Ebrahim Hasan Ali Naser and Abdulla Abduallatif Mohamed Al Abdulla on target for Bahrain and Vatsana Sisoulath grabbing a late consolation for the Laotians. minute strike cancelling out Al Saif s opening goal. UZBEKISTAN 6-1 IRAQ Uzbekistan emphatically booked their place in the quarter-finals as the Central Asians scored three times in the first and second periods to sweep to a 6-1 victory over Iraq. The triumph took the Uzbeks through to the last-eight as Group C winners following their 6-5 defeat of the UAE, who progressed as runners-up courtesy of the three points they picked up from their 7-5 victory over the Iraqis. Feruz Fakhriddinov opened the scoring in the second minute before Jamoliddin Sharipov and Sarvar Kholmurodov got the first of their doubles with goals in the fourth and 11th minutes respectively. Sharipov netted his second in the 15th minute before Kholmurodov did likewise a minute later and while Jafar Irismetov grabbed Uzbekistan s sixth in the 22nd minute it was Iraq that would have the final say in the scoring stakes, with Hussein Jabar grabbing a consolation for the West Asians with three minutes of the game remaining. KUWAIT 6-4 VIETNAM Ali Al Saif scored a goal in each period as Kuwait edged Vietnam 6-4 to finish their fruitless campaign third in the Group B standings and consign the ASEAN side to the foot of the table. Al Saif struck in the eighth, 19th and 26th minutes to end the tournament with an impressive individual haul of six goals although Vietnam s Bui Tran Tuan Anh staked his claim to emerge as the competition s top scorer after he netted a hat-trick (16th, 17th and 35th) to take his personal tally to eight following the five he scored in the opening match against China. Mohammad Bu-Abbas also got his name on the score sheet in the 14th minute either side of an Abdullatif Al Hamad double (10th and 23rd) with Tran Vinh Phong also on target for Vietnam, with his ninth 21

AFC BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP March 2015 QUARTER FINALS UZBEKISTAN 1-6 LEBANON A Haitham Fattal hat-trick headlined Lebanon s impressive 6-1 win over Uzbekistan as the Cedar s swept into the semi-finals. Fattal scored the first of his treble in the last minute of the second period with his side already 2-1 up after a Mohamad Merhi double (8th and 13th) gave Lebanon the initiative. The Uzbeks reduced the deficit seven minutes after Merhi s second but Sarvar Kholmurodov s 20th minute goal was the only time the Central Asians would register on the score board. Fattal regained Lebanon s two-goal lead in the 24th minute and, after goalkeeper Mohamed Choker weighed in with the fourth two minutes later, the 29-year-old scored the second of his treble in the 27th minute before rounding off the impressive 6-1 win with three minutes of the match remaining. IRAN 6-1 UAE Four unanswered goals in the third period put the gloss on what had been an evenly-fought quarterfinal as reigning Asian champions I.R.Iran remained on track to retain their 2013 title with a 6-1 win over the UAE. UAE skipper Ali Hassan Karim put the 2007 and 2008 Asian champions one up four minutes into the meeting between two of the continent s top beach soccer exponents but after Mehran Morshedizadeh had levelled the tie three minutes later it was all one way traffic as five more I.R.Iranian players got their names on the score sheet. Seyed Peyman Hosseini was the first of the quintet to find the net after Morshedizadeh, with the I.R.Iranian goalkeeper scoring in the 15thminute with what was his second of the tournament following his effort in I.R.Iran s 8-1 win over Thailand in the group stage. At 2-1 down the UAE were far from out of the reckoning going into the third period but three goals in a three minute spell from Amir Hosein Akbari (27th), Mohammad Ahmadzadeh (28th) and skipper Ali Naderi (30th) consigned the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup hosts to their fate before a 34th minute Farid Boulokbashi penalty capped the win that took the I.R.Iranians through to the semi-finals. OMAN 7-2 CHINA Oman eased into the semi-finals of the 2015 AFC Beach Soccer Championship with an assured 7-2 quarter-final victory over China. Oman skipper Hani Al Dhabat maintained his goala-game ratio in the third minute, when Cai Weiming also found the target for China, before Khalid Al Oraimi put Oman 2-1 with the first of his hat-trick in the 12th minute. Oman took command of the tie in the second period with the Gulf Sultanate scoring three times without reply to build up a 5-1 lead going into the final 12 minutes. Yahya Mabyoua Al Araimi bagged Oman s third on the quarter-of-an hour mark and after Jalal Khamis Al 22

THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP Sinani made it 4-1 five minutes later Ghaith Abdullah Sebeit scored number five with the goal that took his tally for the tournament to seven, one less than leading scorer Bui Tran Tuan Anh from Vietnam. China skipper Wan Chao pulled one back for the East Asians but there was to be no let up from the freescoring Omanis, who took their total number of goals to 25 in four matches when Al Oraimi completed his hat-trick with goals in the 29th and 31st minutes to seal Oman s place in the semi-finals. JAPAN 5-2 BAHRAIN Japan remained on course of appearing in every FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup since the global game s governing body began organising the tournament in 2005 with a 5-2 win over Bahrain. Japan, who have contested 11 beach soccer world championship tournaments in total, found themselves a goal down after two minutes when Rashed Jamal gave Bahrain an early lead which lasted until one minute into the second period when Takaaki Oba restored parity. Ozu Moreira continued his run of scoring in every match when the Japan skipper made it 2-1 to the 2013 runners-up before Hirofumi Oda and Shinji Makino scored in the 29th and 30th minutes respectively as Japan opened up a three-goal cushion. Ayoob Naseeb Salem closed the gap in the 33rd minute but any hopes of an unlikely Bahrain comeback were snuffed out when Salman Khaled deflected a rebound into his own net to give Japan a 5-2 victory. 23

AFC BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP March 2015 SEMI FINALS OMAN 5-4 LEBANON Oman secured their place in AFC Beach Soccer Championship as well as a ticket to the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup finals with a hard-fought 5-4 overtime win over Lebanon. Oman became the first Asian side to book their ticket to Portugal 2015 but the free-scoring side from the Gulf Sultanate was made to work hard for their place in the final, with Yahya Mabyoua Al Araimi s overtime winner ultimately all that separated the two sides. Neither team could break the deadlock in a tense opening period before Al Araimi put Oman 1-0 in the 16th minute to keep up his record of scoring in each of Oman s matches at the tournament before Khalid Al Oraimi regained the lead two minutes later after Haitham Fattal had pulled one back for the Lebanese. Lebanon skipper Ahmed Grada made it 2-2 in the 27th minute and two minutes after Mandhar Hilal Hamed Al Araimi had put Oman s noses in front in the 32nd minute there followed a frenetic period of three goals in the space of a minute, put the defending champions I.R.Iran 2-0 up at the end of the first period. But Japan turned the tie on its head in the second stanza thanks to three goals in a blistering three minute spell from Oda Hirofumi (15th), Shusei Yamauchi (16th) and Takasuke Goto (17th), who went onto extend Japan s lead in the 20th minute with his second of the match and eighth of the campaign, which saw him join Vietnam s Bui Tran Tuan Anh as the tournament s leading scorer. Abdollahi struck his second just seconds after Goto had bagged his brace as I.R.Iran reduced the deficit but Japan restored their two-goal cushion thanks to a 32nd minute strike from Japan skipper Ozu Moreira, who also kept up his record of scoring in every game. Mostafa Kiani set up a tense climax to the thrilling semi-final with I.R.Iran s fourth in the 35th minute but Japan were able to hold out for the remaining 60 seconds to send them into the final and in the draw for the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. Grada grabbed his second while team-mate Mohamad Merhi scored at both ends of the pitch to send the semi-final into overtime which was settled when Yahya Al Araimi scored his seventh of the campaign. IRAN 4-5 JAPAN Japan had to overcome an early setback to reach their seventh consecutive continental final after Hassan Abdollahi (8th) and Mohammad Ahmedzadeh (12th) 24

THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP THIRD PLACE PLAY- OFF IRAN 8-3 LEBANON I.R.Iran made up for the disappointment of failing to successfully defend their continental crown by claiming Asia s final ticket to the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup with an 8-3 hammering of Lebanon in Saturday s AFC Beach Soccer Championship. finalists Japan and Oman at the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, scheduled to be held in Espinho, Portugal from July 9 to 19. I.R.Iran, who were consigned to the third-place playoff for the fifth time since 2006 when they lost Friday s semi-final to 2013 runners-up Japan, built up a 4-0 lead by the quarter-of-an-hour mark through goals from Mohammad Moradi (9th), Mohammadali Mokhtari (12th), skipper Ali Naderi (13th) and Mohammad Ahmadzadeh (15th). Lebanon finally got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute when goalkeeper Mohamed Choker scored his second of the tournament following his strike in the 6-1 group stage victory over Uzbekistan before Haitham Fattal made further ground in the Cedars fightback with his seventh of the campaign three minutes later. Ahmadzadeh stopped Lebanon s run with I.R.Iran s fifth a minute later and completed his hat-trick in the 28thminute, two minutes after Mohamad Merhi had netted Lebanon s third and final goal. But the scoring didn t end there as Ali Naderi scored his second of the night in the 29th minute before the final say went to Ahmadzadeh, who scored his fourth and I.R.Iran s eighth with three minutes of the match remaining. I.R.Iran will join AFC Beach Soccer Championship 25

AFC BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP March 2015 FINAL OMAN 1-1 (3-2 PSO) JAPAN Goalkeeper Haitham Harib Showan saved the decisive spot-kick as Oman defeated Japan 3-2 on penalties to be crowned Asian champions as the curtain came down on the 2015 AFC Beach Soccer Championship. Champions Oman, runners-up Japan and I.R.Iran, who swept aside Lebanon 8-3 in the third-place playoff, qualified for the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. Oman football legend Hani Al Dhabat continued to write his name in the Gulf Sultanate s football folklore when the Oman skipper opened the scoring just two minutes into the first period of the final. Oman s slender lead lasted until the 23rd minute when Al Dhabat s Japanese counterpart Ozu Moreira, who would go on to be named MVP for the second successive tournament, levelled for the 2013 beaten finalists. Moreira s eighth of the tournament turned out to be the last goal of an evenly fought finale and with neither side able to make the breakthrough in overtime the match went into penalties. Successful penalties from Al Dhabat and Mandhar Hilal Hamed Al Araimi were matched by Moreira and Shinji Makino and after Abdullah Masoud Salim had made it 3-2 to Oman, the pressure was on Takasuke Goto to keep Japan in the game. However the prolific Goto, who had also scored eight time on route to the final including a penalty in Japan s 5-3 win over Kuwait, saw his effort from nine metres saved as Japan had to once again settle for second best as Oman celebrated their first AFC Beach Soccer Championship triumph. 26

THE AFC QUALIFIERS FOR THE 2015 FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP Teams are assessed in five categories, with a further category relating to the behaviour of the public. This is how the points are calculated Red and Yellow Card (max. 10 marks): If a player who is on a yellow card (-1 point) commits another yellow card offence, only the red card will count (-3 points). But if a player who has already been cautioned then commits a red card offence, both cards will count (so the player will receive -4 points). This is the only section in which it is possible to receive a score below zero. Positive Play (max. 10 marks): This is designed to encourage attractive play that will increase the enjoyment of spectators and the following areas are taken into consideration: Positive - Using attacking tactics, not defensive - Speeding up the game - Efforts to gain time (e.g. bringing the ball back into play quickly even if the team is in a winning position) - Continuing to push for goals when in a winning position Negative - Slowing down the game - Time wasting - Tactics based on foul play - Play-acting (simulation) Respect towards the opponent (max. 5 marks): Players should respect the Laws of the Game and abide by the spirit of Fair Play. The Fair Play delegate s assessment will not double count items already covered in the Red and Yellow cards category, but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. This category will also include offences overlooked by the referee. Any single major incident between players may have a significant bearing on the final score. Respect towards the referee (max. 5 marks): Players are expected to respect the officials - including assistants - at all times.the Fair Play delegate s assessment will not double count items already covered in the Red and Yellow cards but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. Any single major incident may have a significant bearing on the score.a positive attitude, including the acceptance of doubtful decisions without protest, will be rewarded with high marks Behaviour of the officials (max. 5 marks): Team officials, including coaches, are expected to develop the sporting, technical and tactical level of their team and instruct players to behave in accordance with the Fair Play principles. Positive and negative aspects of the team officials conduct will be assessed such as whether they calm down or provoke angry players or fans and how they accept the decisions of the referee. Co-operation with the media will also be taken into account. Any single major incident may have a significant bearing on the final mark, as will breaches of the regulations governing the dugout and technical area. For categories 1-5, the overall assessment of a team is obtained by adding up the points given for the individual categories, dividing this sum by the maximum points score (40) and multiplying it by 10. Total Number of points (x 10 / (40*)). In addition, there is one further category assessed by the Fair Play delegate Behaviour of the crowd (max. 5 marks): All teams begin with a score of 5 points. A maximum of a further 5 points can be added for: - Verbal support in acceptable form - Covert recognition of outstanding play by the opponents A maximum of 5 points can be deducted for: - Persistent foul and abusive language - Persistent abuse of the officials decisions - Aggressive and threatening conduct towards opposing fans 59
