I. HISTORY OF FUTSAL: Futsal is the abbreviation of the Portugese phrase Futebol De Salao or Spanish equivalent Futbol Sala which effectively means indoor soccer. Future inclusion into the Olympics as well as it s current World Cup competition at Open, U/21 and U/17 level are the major calendar events of the game. Played throughout the world it is seen as an integral sport in it s own right. The origins of the modern game can be traced back to Montevideo, Uruguay, 1930, when one Juan Carlos Ceriani, devised a five a side version of the original outdoor soccer for participation by youths in local YMCA s. On the other hand many stories have surfaced to suggest the roots of the game from the favellas of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Subsequently one form or another of indoor versions of soccer can be traced back as early as 1831 in Canada, where participants were forced inside due to inclement weather. The game was essentially played on basketball court size playing dimensions both indoors and outside. It was and is played without the use of nets or side walls, therefore requiring a high level of skill in order to participate. It is one of the fastest and most entertaining sports in the world, showcasing a myriad of skills, power, speed and plenty of goals. It s popularity spread quickly amongst the South American and European countries of the world. Asia and Australia have quickly followed suit and the global participation figures have risen dramatically. Over 120 countries now actively participate in the sport with Spain, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Belgium, Russia Argentina and Brazil even boasting professional leagues. Players demonstrating the benefits of playing Futsal were on show as recently as the World Cup in Korea/ Japan. The starting eleven from the victorious Brazil team had no less than eight former Futsal players on the park in the final. Amongst them the most prominent and celebrated Ronaldo, who top scored for the tournament. Skills transferred from Futsal to Soccer are self evident and the long list of prestigious exponents of the game reads as a whose who! of the the beautiful game, Pele, Zico, Cantona, Maradona The first international competition took place in 1965, when Paraguay won the first South American Cup. Six more similar tournaments were held right up until 1979, Brazil winning all of them. Brazil subsequently went on to also win the first Pan America Cup in 1980 & The first World Championship conducted under the auspices of FIFUSA (before it integrated with FIFA in 1989) was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1982, with the hosts winning once again.the Brazilians repeated as champions in 1985, in Madrid, Spain, but lost the subsequent 1988 World Cup held in Melbourne, Australia, (the Aussies came sixth, our best ever world ranking) to Paraguay in the final. FIFA took over the event in 1989 in Holland, 1992 in Hong Kong and 1996 in Spain, Brazil completing a hat trick of world titles. In 2000, in Guatemala, Spain finally beat Brazil on penalties in the final. Spain repeated their success against Italy in Chinese Taipei in The semi final showdown between Brazil & Spain was rated as one of the best ever Futsal matches ever seen. Australia is one of the few nations that has participated in every World Cup of the sport and over 20,000 registered members and a further 100,000 social participants exist in Australia today. Our proximity and imminent inclusion into the fastest growing sporting market in the world, in Asia, places us in an enviable setting, conducive to both the sport and it s potential sponsors! 2

SUMMARY OF FUTSAL LAWS OF THE GAME: FIVE A SIDE INDOOR FOOTBALL. This is only a summary of FIFA S Laws of the Game for Futsal. See the hypertext for access to the complete set of the laws of the game of futsal. Overall the main principles of the sport of football can be applied to Futsal. The differences, however, are summarised below. Size #4 low bound ball is used. A Size #3 Futsal Ball is used for players under 12. Five players on court at any one time. Unlimited flying substitutions are allowed (12 players are allowed on a team sheet). Kick ins apply for when the ball goes out of play, instead of throws. 2 Referees are only used, no linesmen. Stopped clock on 20 minute halves (with 1 one minute time out per half, per team allowed). Goal clearances must be thrown, not kicked in, except where the goalkeeper has caught the ball during play. Kick offs must go forwards first (you can shoot to score right away). No shoulder charges, tackling from behind or slide tackles are allowed. Five foul limit only, then no wall freekicks must occur, all players must line up behind the line of the ball. All players must set up defensive walls from any restarts 5 metres from freekick. You can score from inside the goal area or any part of the court with any part of the body but the arms and hands, except directly off a kick in or indirect freekick. You can only take 4 seconds to play any restart or freekick, corner etc. ball must be on the line & player must be off the court of play on taking the kick ins. Must take corner from the designated area, at corner of court. Goalkeeper cannot touch by hand any ball played back to them by a team mates feet. Ball must pass halfway mark or touch an opponent last before goalkeeper can receive a backpass. Goalkeeper can throw pass the halfway mark of the court, they can only possess the ball for 4 seconds in their own defensive half. Player sent off can be replaced after 2 minutes or after a goal is scored. Normal yellow card (2 yellows = expulsion from game) and red card rules apply. Player sent off cannot sit on the bench. No offside rule exists. If ball hits the roof, the freekick must be taken from the closest parallell sideline to the infringement. Shinpads must be worn during play & shirts must be tucked in & socks pulled up. Halftime maximum of / swap benches after the break. The whole of the ball must cross a sideline or goal line in order for a ball to be deemed in, out of play or a goal. Penalties will be awarded for any fouls committed in the offensive goal areas. 4 If you ever wanted to improve your football, watch the Brasilians, Argentinians, the Dutch, the Spanish, French and Italians What s their secret? From a young age, they are encouraged to exhibit - creativity, speed, running off the ball, deadly finishing and dribbling skills, elegant defending and the ability to anticipate play, playing under pressure, making quick decisions and plenty of constructive touches on the ball! Their speed of technique execution is unparalleled All this, at no expense to their tactical awareness, adaptability and game intelligence. They emphasise positive possession of the ball under a controlled manner, building effective attacking forays upon their opponents. They strive to always breakdown and frustrate opponents by denying them the ball, space and getting back the ball aggressively in the opposition half when possession is lost! For years mainstream coaching at all levels has included practice situations in small spaces, where the focus of developing all the skills required for football, can be finely tuned under these modified conditions. Many respected coaches around the globe have waxed lyrical about the benefits of improving technical, cognitive and tactical skill levels and overall football sporting performance through small sided games, 5 a side training regimens and the advantages of practicing all manner of football skills under constant pressure and limited space. Players in turn have voted with their feet - Beach, Street, 7 a side, Indoor and freestyle versions of football are also great examples of the appeal of the small sided versions of football. FIFA has recognized Futsal as a sport in it s own right, realizing the valuable link between a young developing player and what Futsal has to offer. Brasil has been taking advantage and realising the value of Futsal for the last twenty five years Pele, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Junihno and Robinho, as well as, Barcelona s Ronaldinho and Deco are all a tangible modern testament to these claims! You learn to make snap decisions, as everything is much tighter and happens more quickly than in normal football. Speed, perfect technique and the ability to weigh up the situation fast are the key things futsal teaches you It s better for youngsters to play on small pitches because that way they get the ball more often, you only get better by practicing and getting the ball a lot. (Ronaldinho, FIFA 2005 Activity Report, p.115) All the great players will tell you that to become a better player, realistic practice, fitness, discipline and a true enjoyment in what you do cannot be ignored. The sport of Futsal is not an overnight scheme dreamed up by over zealous sports entrepreneurs it is and has been the crux of football skill development for over 25 years! 4

INTRODUCTION: You should remember the information you are given in this document is only a guideline to the many options you have access to when coaching or playing, it outlines basic principles of Futsal at an introductory level. A player s creativity should never be restricted. Encourage skill, speed, shooting and isolating opponents and beating them 1v1. This is the essence of Futsal itself! At the same time remember the importance of team cohesion, communication between players and working as a unit, a single player can win matches but a team wins titles It is geared towards players between the ages of 8 12 years (primary school grades 3 6). This booklet is a template that teams and coaches should use as a starting point. The facts outlined below are based around an approach that stresses some of the major concepts of the sport. Do not feel overwhelmed in the end if you can manage to promote the basic fundamentals of small sided football, essentially the players will benefit! The 10 x sessions outlined at the end of the booklet encompass a holistic view of the training regimen which includes Fun, Fitness, Skill Development, Basic Technical & Tactical knowledge and of course playing Matches sessions following the initial 10 should be or could be an opportunity for a Mini World Cup tournament, lunchtime competition or the arrangement of matches or even joining a league. HAVE FUN! FUTSAL can be easily broken down into four main areas of focus when training: Individual finishing skills by court players and individual goalkeeping skills when saving opponents attempts at goal, Individual attacking skills and attacking as a team, Individual marking skills and defending as a team & Set plays (dead ball situations), escaping pressure & special plays like power plays, using 3-2 set up (goalkeeper as a fifth player) and substitution plays. GAME STRATEGIES- ATTACKING. KEY CONCEPTS IN ATTACK TO REMEMBER: As in any sport there are a variety of key principles you always need to adhere to, so that you ensure you are maintaining optimal performance. In FUTSAL these are: Movement, Mobility, Speed & Intensity Team Width, Depth, Balance & Near and Far Support Evasion & Possession Skill, Deception & Creativity Quick & Efficient Decision-Making Timing, Patience, Communication & Teamwork These can be broken down further into specific individual skill requirements such as: Keeping your head up and spotting your target Ensuring checking drives into the attacking zones. Give & Go! Pass & Drive Passing options going forward, up the line, diagonal, chip, through middle or on the back post Use of Target & Empty Space Only 3 in attacking half, going forward Effective trapping, control and carrying of the ball (sole of the foot) & quick passing at speed Willingness to shoot accurately or beat an opponent 1v1 (at least to win a corner or kick in) BASIC OFFENSIVE SET UPS: FUTSAL POSITIONS: Right Flank GK Target Pivot Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) Left Flank 6

The qualities each respective player in Futsal needs to possess is well documented; Skill, Speed, Agility, Power, Endurance, Cunning and Courage. In turn there are also a number of specialist attributes coaches should look for when fielding a side, in order to, maintain balance and allow for a variety of options. The tentative positions on the Futsal court are interchangeable. All players need to have the ability to play everywhere! However, as a coach you do need to consider your pool of players carefully as some individuals possess unique or stronger qualities that some other players do not ATTACKING OPTIONS IN FUTSAL: Getting the ball to the target players in the forward areas of the court is the main priority of any passing from deeper players in the back court, including the goalkeeper. It creates the chance for the lay off and shot, 1 v 1 opportunity, or back post lay off to deeper players driving into forward areas. Long set plays (far support) can be used to create an attacking move quite easily. These can be direct throws or passes by the goalkeeper or other players to the forwards. When defenders apply a man on man approach and open the spaces in front of the forwards, this type of attack can be very effective. When defences sit off and close space in their own half (zone) free play passing from court players (short set plays or near support) is a better option. Passes up the lines, chips over and into, or through the middle to the target player (who can be in a stationary or mobile pattern), depending on availability and positioning of the forwards, is recommended. Rotations are the means by which offensive players systematically and simultaneously perform various movement patterns on the court in an attempt to disorganise and shift out of their defensive zones the defenders of the opposition and create an avenue of attack. Subsequently possession is maintained, the ball is moved up the court, while opportunities to put the ball into the target is constantly being sought after. This is why players are always asked to look up and seek passing opportunities into runners in the front court. ATTACKING FORMATIONS IN FUTSAL: A modified 2 2 or 4 0 System can be used for younger & novice teams where positions are set but simple switching patterns are performed by only a couple of the players. This system of movement allows the two forward players to switch constantly in search of space, whilst the deeper players search for open passing lanes in order to feed the target players the ball and make forward runs (drives) in search for the return lay off or pass. REMEMBER! Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) GK Rotations are the means by which offensive players systematically and in an organized manner perform various movement patterns simultaneously, on the court, in an attempt to disorganise and shift out of their defensive zones the defenders of the opposition and create an avenue of attack. Subsequently possession is maintained, whilst all the while, opportunities to put the ball into the target or empty spaces on the flanks, is constantly being sought after. Passes up the sidelines to wide players, chips over and into, or through the middle to the target players. Who can be in a stationary or mobile pattern. Back heels, lifts and screens or blocks set up by moving players can all be rehearsed at training as part of a team s attacking arsenal. These final phases of any movement sequences or rotations are the hardest of all skills to master and must be effectively and carefully planned by coaches. 7

A modified 2 2 and or 4-0 System: (D) (B) Players on sideline switch Forwards switch Diagonal players switch GK (C) (A) KEY: Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball) Any given switching pattern (one switch at a time) is possible, the whole idea is to create space. ROTATION SEQUENCE Player (A)- Can switch with (D) or (C) or even (B), as long as all players get to one of the spots left open Player (B)- Can switch with (D) or (A) or even (C), as long as all players get to one of the spots left open Player (C)- Can switch with (D) or (A) or even (B), as long as all players get to one of the spots left open Player (D)- Can switch with (C) or (A) or even (B), as long as all players get to one of the spots left open N.B.- Ball can be played from GK or back two players. The 3 1 System: The 3 1 System (1 x fixed target player & 3 players rotating positions around or on the half court or defensive third) allows for very fast movements and use of a highly skilful target player. The target player can trap, hold up, lay off for the runners, or take on defenders in an attempt to score. There are a number of ways set patterns can be performed with this formation. OPTION A : Initial Starting Positions: GK Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) OPTION B : GK 8

OTHER FORMATIONS: The 3 2 System (using the GK as a fifth player in attack) allows for an extra man going forward, spreads defences and the opportunity to deny the opposition the ball for prolonged periods of time. It is a risky ploy, but, if used correctly there are a variety of plays that can allow either target, flanker, post-men or the goalkeeper (or power player, a player who comes on for the GK) to score once a defender is sucked out of position. Anticipation on behalf of the players in possession and aggression and advanced individual skills and shooting ability on behalf of the goalkeeper is required for such tactics. Safety first under pressure is the key rule! Kicking the ball out, in the opposition s half, is not unusual practice and gives the team time to get four behind the ball. GK Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) COACHING ADVICE: MOBILITY & SPEED: Passing and moving, late runs into spaces, lay off for runners, switches and diagonal runs, cut backs, little dummies, chips, back heels, checks & fakes, wall passes (one two s) etc All create headaches for the opposition. Draw away from crowded areas and follow up shots (far post runners arriving late and on the move, will always open up space and provide for excellent scoring options). POSSESSION, EFFECIENCY & EVASION: Possession and patience is crucial, do not pass square balls across the court face. Always provide diagonal support in order to allow for stress free passing lanes. Checking like movements, forwards and backwards, will create space and make for easy passing options and allow time for prudent decision making. Do not force the pass or feel you have to score immediately with every possession. Waste is a killer! Evasion skills upon receiving any pass, allows a player to find space and time, all players should develop a repertoire of one touch evasion skills. Faking a pass, receiving at speed on the move, roll overs, dropping the shoulder and turning the other way, cruyff like turns, stop and go-s, step overs and step backs are just a few useful practices all elite players should master. OPTIONS & INTENSITY: Support players on the ball (near & far, behind & in front), create options by being mobile and quick (Futsal must be played flat out and regular substitutions are essential in maintaining momentum and intensity!). Remember all set plays and be quick to play them out! SHOOTING & ATTACKING PRESSURE: Positive forward movements and aggression going forwards with plenty of shooting attempts, will prevent counter attacks against you and allow you to work your set plays and maintain possession and control of the game in the opposition s half. All attacking driving movements should be full of checking and change of direction at speed. Shooting should include deceptive movements such as faking shots, disguising toe pokes, rolling it around or pushing past an opponent, throwing it passed or lifting it over a goalkeeper, you do not always have to take a giant wind up and pile driver! Always force a save and attempt to hit the goal zones at all times! THE GOALKEEPER & DISTRIBUTION: Goalkeepers have only 4 seconds to use the ball and restart play and they can use the whole goal area. Don t rush your disposal but be effective and accurate with distribution, always to feet at pace. All players should learn trapping and carrying the ball with the sole of the foot, it allows for quick evasive movement and deception, due to the low bound nature of the ball, control is easier and there is less chance of error! 9

THE TARGET AREA: The forwards must switch and show themselves repeatedly and in the front position in target areas. Get out of the hole if you are marked out from in front by a defender, or simply put in a second target man, constantly changing the target can also assist. Target players depending on their skill, speed or strength can be mobile and deceptive or prefer to be set and in front. They can pass off, take on a defender, back heel to a runner or set a screen or block for a teammate. A clever, strong and skillful target is a great asset. THE DEEPER PLAYERS & FLANKERS: Defenders must adjust their body positioning accordingly, upon receiving the ball wide from the goalkeeper, so that they can automatically trap, look up, and have two or three passing options in one co-ordinated motion. If they turn their back on a defender in their own half they will be pressed for options and will risk losing the ball in the defensive third. Mobility, driving at speed and avoiding markers is an essential quality. A player s ability to deceive an opponent is a learned skill that must be taught and reinforced. Time your runs and read the play. Decision making under pressure is a quality all players need to nurture and refine, experience and regular high level matchplay and training will enhance this ability. Perform movements as a team. Very rarely can a team afford to compensate for a player that assumes they are just a playmaker and is unwilling to work hard off the ball at the elite level. LINKING PLAY (Final Phases of any possession or rotation): Flankers must drive up the court for lay offs in order to try and shoot! The target players must hold the ball long enough to lay off to the runners. If an opportunity to pass off is missed, do not risk the pass, just get the target to carry the ball and balance the attacking formation. Someone must cover these drives, Pivot must tuck in to the centre circle. Three players involved in any one attacking final phase is plenty, never commit all four players into the other half. This crowds the attacking half and leaves you vulnerable to a counter attack. Any final phase of attack planning by a coach should include some aspect of how the team will re-shape, balance and recover quickly in case of a turn over. Prop flank lay offs, back post runs, parallel passing, target switches, wall passes, back heels and screen moves are only a few final phase moves that can be worked on in training. THE MAJOR RULE OF OFFENCE! Every player must be able to play every position EITHER THE BALL IS MOVING OR THE PLAYERS ARE MOVING is a useful code to adhere to! Speed, skill, deception, patience, focus, commitment, work ethic, desire, team work, honesty and creativity are essential ingredients required for success. ATTACKING SET PLAYS IN FUTSAL: KEY CONCEPTS IN ATTACKING SET PLAYS TO REMEMBER: Have a look before setting the ball, spot your target early Execution must be quick and effective Timing and disguise is vital Follow up and cover, once set plays have happened, is crucial Movement before the ball is played is essential if opponents marking are to be lost All players must know the set play sequences and calls Adapting or taking an unforseen opportunity is always a consideration GOAL THROWS & STARTING ANY ATTACKS: First option- Throw it straight to forward ( target ) players feet if space and opportunity allow. Second option- Throw to either left or right flank, they then play ball to forwards feet up the middle, or up the line (chip or floor) to available player. Allow the opportunity for prolonged possession, be patient and push it around (support the guy with the ball), movement and rotation is essential. It is imperative the two forward players or target, get in front of their defenders and maintain the front position, in order to receive the pass. A simple switch with a teammate can create this space. 10

CORNERS: A basic attacking set up on a corner number 3 number 2 GK corner taker number 1 Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) First option- Simple pass to first man on the corner attacking set up for a shot, possession and restart of rotations, dummy and shot, dummy and chip to the back post, or dummy and lay off to a runner from the back post. Always push with the sole of the foot when receiving the ball at speed, to deceive the oncoming defender, remember shooting first time has a low % of success. This doesn t mean you don t encourage it, but it must be done only when the opportunity is favorable. Second option- Pass to front post again, this time however, the player dummies for the GK or second player coming in late to shoot (make sure there is cover, back post player or corner taker can provide this). Remember variation and deception. Third option Front two block out defenders for back post player to come around and shoot. Corner taker covers. Fourth option- Pass directly to the Goalkeeper and go into a 3 2 formation (Using the Goalkeeper as a fifth player) Fifth Option Two players are on the ball, one quickly lay offs to the other then screens for them, who in turn hits it into the goal area hard and low, attempting to find a driving attacker. Front two players provide the crossing runs in search for space. Sixth option-low and hard or chip pass to late runners, one at front post and one at back, firstly empty out the hole (goal area) to create space, someone remains pivot or last man as cover. This works well when quickly taken, before the defence has time to set up or when defenders go full press. IF DEFENCE SHUTS FIRST POST PLAYER DOWN, a player must then drive on that defender to empty out the space and/ or block or screen that defender, it can then go to GK for a shot or be switched to the back post by the goalkeeper. If the driving player is not followed then they are on! Alternately if the same player simply switches to the other side, the GK can shoot themselves or pass it to the player on the back post. You never narrow your shooting options by allowing your best shooter to simply go to the same set up point, shift and camouflage your intentions. Ensure your players are on their stronger shooting sides ieleft foot driver or right foot driver cannot get caught attempting to score with their weaker foot Set PICKS OR SCREENS AND COVER FOR ALL SHOOTERS! CHECK & MOVE BEFORE THE BALL IS SET The player taking the corner or set play ultimately decides on the particular set play, depending on how they read the opposition defensive set up and possibilities to score. Remember variation of set plays and disguising plays and the deception of the opposition will allow for greater success. KICK OFFS: Basic attacking set ups on a kick off: GK Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) kick off taker 11

GK kick off taker Direction of Attack ( =Attackers & = Ball) COACHING ADVICE: Direct shots off one-touch scenarios are always on when only one player sits in the wall or when a poor set up is present- Have a go if it s on! Always ask for the wall to retreat the required 5 metres, off the referee (this in itself may serve as distraction enough to take the freekick quickly). Remember you only have '4 seconds'. Players should follow up all shots. Others should also cover all shots. Ensure an option at the far post always! COUNTER ATTACKING: Counter attacking is essential in Futsal, if a team defends well many scoring opportunities follow on. In any given scenario there are some general rules that can be applied that will allow for optimal results. 1 v 1- The player with the ball simply takes on the defender (or slows up and waits for assistance if they want to run down time). Turn of speed and direction, followed by cutting in front of the dispossessed defender would be recommended. 2 v 1- Player without the ball must get ahead of the ball on an alternate side of the player carrying the ball. This forces the defender to sacrifice at least one of the attackers and dive in on the other. 3 v 1 or 3 v 2- The player with the ball must take the ball into the middle of the court so that two passing options (*1 & *3) are possible, as well as, allowing the possibility to shoot at goals themselves (*2). Same rule as before applies, both supporting players must get ahead of the ball, in order to create space and force defenders to commit and leave someone open. Counter Attack (3 v 2 and 3 v 1): 1 0 Player Dispossessed 0 GK 2 GK Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball)

GAME STRATEGIES- DEFENDING. KEY CONCEPTS IN DEFENCE TO REMEMBER: As in any sport there are a variety of key principles you always need to adhere to, so that you ensure you are maintaining optimal performance. In FUTSAL these are: Focus, Aggression & Anticipation (on your toes, no flat feet!) Shape & Team Balance, Communication & Teamwork Quick & Efficient Decision-Making Work Rate, Discipline & Responsibility Funneling the ball away from goals & Shutting the Middle of the court Following your players, Covering, Recovery & Bouncing Appropriate Pressing, Blitzing, Compressing & Fronting the targets These can be broken down further into individual skill requirements such as: Following your Runners or any opposition Rotation & Movement, unless a switch is called! Track your runners visually and on goal side, facing them & check their drives. Don t turn your back on an opponent, follow them backwards. Be behind the line of the ball. The nearest player squeezes the ball, the others tuck in and prevent any penetrating passes behind the line of defence. Avoid getting sucked out or wide, stay in a triangular (versus a 3 1 offensive set up) or diagonal (versus a 2 2 offensive set up) like zone. Front the forwards whenever possible and challenge all loose balls, get there first. Always maintain your designated zones and shape, work as a unit, close the middle corridor of the court. Cut out passing lanes, then press the ball. Watch ball and player, defensive positioning should be low to the ground, side on and goal side. Show the attackers the sideline, limit & know his/ her options, don t dive in! Delay and hold for support. Time your tackle! You can block, reach and slide, within the rules. Win the ball first then take next step, don t try too much. No unnecessary dribbling in your own half, safety first! Get it up or out! Second defender presses the target or closes down the ball when the attacker in possession turns their back on any forward passing options. Watch far post for lay off to late runners Zone Defence on all corners first, THEN step out towards, press, shut down, or squeeze and/ or follow all runners! Two players in defensive walls near the goals (Goalkeeper must set the walls and then get in it, to narrow the angles available to the shooters), two players set on the inside of the goal posts and cover wide attacking options. The last player going forward always covers during an attack! No silly or cheap fouls. Maintain your shape & play your zones. Adjust the tactics when instructed or when opponents change tactics, be able to read play, both defensive & offensive variations. BASIC DEFENSIVE SET UPS: Versus 4 0 Or a 2 2 attacking formation defend using a zone 2 2 approach. Two players set up either side of the posts of the goals, near the top of the goalkeeping area & the other two players set up just over or on the half court line. The back two players attempt to front their opponents at all times. This prevents the ball from reaching the target players of the opposition. The front two players must not allow the ball to cross over the midline if possible, this limits their opponents options as they cannot use their goalkeeper anymore. The front two must work as a unit. The nearest player to the ball closes down their opponent s options by; shutting down the passing option up the line then encroaching and pressing that player. The other front defender tucks in behind the first defender, in order to, shut the middle passing lane. The only option left to the attacker is then to risk dribbling in their own half or pass off the ball across the width of the court to their teammate. When this occurs, the front two defenders simply repeat the process by switching movements. If an attacker runs through in order to rotate with another player, the nearest defender simply follows that player. This allows an easy switching of defensive positions. Bouncing or switching your defensive duties on a runner can also be an effective means by which runners are covered defensively. This process however requires clear and strong communication between defenders. Accomplished players are encouraged to practice this skill as it conserves their energies and makes it extremely hard for opponents to set screens or picks. 13

Defending a 2-2 and 4-0 Attack: 0 0 GK 0 invisible line of defence GK 0 Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball) Versus 3 1 attacking formation defend using a man on man approach on the target and pushing the other three defenders up to the half court line. The front three must work as a unit. The nearest player to the ball closes down that player s options by; shutting down the passing lanes to the target and/ or running players, then encroaching and pressing that player. The other front two defenders tuck in behind that first defender, in order to, shut the middle passing option and stay in view of the wider passing options (therefore being able to see their opponents directly from in front of them). They need to position themselves in a manner that allows them to see the ball and their nearest opponent. Communication, team balance, awareness and anticipation are vital elements of such defences. The only option left to the attacker is then to risk dribbling in their own half or passing off the ball across the court to their teammates on the opposite side. Never allow defenders to turn and follow their runners but rather, run backwards so that the attackers cannot check or prop and get behind the defence, find space or receive the ball behind the defender. Defenders should block or slow the runners down by rolling in front of them or anticipating and checking their runs early Defending a 3 1 Attack: 0 GK 0 0 invisible line of defence GK 0 Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball) 0 invisible line of defence GK 0 0 GK 0 Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball) 14

Versus a 3 2 attacking formation where a team crosses the court midline and brings the goalkeeper into a fifth player scenario the same defensive principles as applied in a 4 0 or 2 2 zone apply. The defenders must refrain from jumping in. A goalkeeper, you must remember, will rarely score from a shot taken at the halfway mark. This ploy is attempted by teams to regain possession, waste time and/ or create a passing avenue through the middle or out wide. Defenders need to be attentive and focussed waiting for the opportunity to steal the ball, press the goalie or tackle them. This usually will happen when the defender at the top of the court nearest the goalkeeper s shooting side will; firstly close the passing lane of that side and then secondly, press at pace the goalie. It is essential however, that all other defenders must full press and deny the goalie the opportunity to find another passing option. A trap tempting the goalkeeper to shoot inside the defensive half can also be set. Anticipating such a move can pay effective dividends. COACHING ADVICE: FULL PRESS (man to man marking) defending is always an option in times of need for the ball or when opponents are disorganised, lack skill or deep in their own half and confused! When attackers turn their backs to receive the ball in their own half and cannot go back to the goalie, a full press can be applied. This however must be done as a team in unison and with speed and aggression. If someone is beaten with a pass, dribble or run, you are in trouble Blitzing? Going to full press situations or using a second and or third defender to press a player with the ball is also a valuable skill. Similar to when to apply a full press, this tactic allows for defenders to steal the ball and force a turnover. Once again the other remaining defenders must not allow a second option to become available. DEFENDING SET PLAYS CORNERS: Three players in a diagonal line pointing outwards from the goals (this means that all defenders should be able to see both the corner taker and the ball, as well as, the player they are marking and that they need to prevent from shooting), forcing the pass long. The first player on the kick, spreads themselves on the line in front of the corner. The second and third players must ensure they do not stand too deep, they must cover as much space as possible across the side of the goalkeeping area. The Goalkeeper covers the front post, and the fourth player must cover the deep ball and the back post zone. Players should anticipate the intended pass, shut the inside areas of the goal area first, then, once the ball is played, avoid standing still, they need to be closing down their opponents quickly, ensuring that they are in their line of shooting. They must not dive in but rather, force their opponent wide and toward the line. Basic defensive set up on a corner 0 invisible line of defence GK 0 0 GK Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball) Direction of Attack ( =Attackers/ 0 = Defenders/ = Ball) 0 15

KICK-INS: Similar set up to a corner, so that all the defenders can see the attackers and the ball in front of them. Forward target players should be fronted and passing lanes through the middle or up the line should be closed down. All four players need to be behind the ball in a diagonal line facing towards their opponents goals, ready to go into an appropriate defensive set up once the kick in is taken. Goalkeepers should be alert and vocal, feeding information to the defenders and ready to sweep the incoming pass or press the target as a second defender.
