1 WECOME TO BEDWORTH Today we have our fourth home league on the trot (thanks to a flooded pitch at Upton) and we welcome players, supporters and committee persons from Bedworth for the second last game before the reverse fixtures start. Bedworth were relegated with us last season and have a better record than their league position shows. They have won four of their nine games but have been deducted ten points for upsetting the League Secretary in one way or another. Perhaps we will find out why today! The wins have come away at Newbold and Shipston and at home to Earlsdon and Leamington. Last time out they lost to Old Laurentians, 5-20, and did us a very big favour by denying OL s a bonus point. They have scored 161 points for with 192 against and have achieved five bonus points. Last season in Mids 1 we lost a pulsating game (well the first half anyway!), 30-50, at Bedworth but won the return fixture. 2 MIDLANDS 2 WEST, SOUTH We are now on the same points, 39, as Old Laurentians who failed to get a bonus point last time out at Bedworth but are second due to our much inferior points difference 108 to 239, scoring less and conceding more. Droitwich and Kidderminster are in 3rd and 4th place, six points adrift. At the bottom Upton are now four points adrift of Banbury (our next game) and five behind Shipston, Leamington and today s visitors. Bedworth would be well away from the bottom group if they had not been deducted 10 points for their indiscretions. In our equivalent league in the north Wolverhampton are now leading by a lot from Silhillians. In the league above us Worcester Wanderers are now the leaders with Old Halesonians and Lichfield close on their heals. Camp Hill are struggling at the bottom behind Northwich and Berkswell & Balsall. In NM3 mids Sutton Coldfield are heading Ampthill at the top with Derby and Mansfield struggling at the bottom. CUP COMPETITIONS At the time of going to press we still do not know who or when we will be playing the RFU Int Cup, 1/4r final tie and the dispute between Bedworth & Oadby was still rumbling on. Bedworth apparently lost their appeal (handled by the Midlands) but had the opportunity of appealing to the RFU. The outcome of this, if they did make the second appeal, is not known at time of going to press. If Bedworth are unsuccessful then we may be playing Oadby on either the 29th Dec or the 19th Jan so watch this space. If Bedworth are successful then these dates may/will be taken up by a rematch between Bedworth & Oadby. In the other games played last weekend Old Laurentians, Wolverhampton and Coalville (all currently leading their leagues) were all successful and in the draw for the semi finals Old Laurentians have been paired with Wolverhampton and the eventual winners of Bedworth/Oadby and Kenilworth are at home to Coalville. The Colts have been drawn at home against Moseley in the National Colts Plate and a date for this is being established now, more likely on or around the 12th Jan. Tak starred with Kenilworth in season 05/06 and returned for a similar cameo appearance at the start of the 08/09 season. Tak will be researching Maori Culture in London, Oxford and Cambridge during his spell in the UK. 4 KENILWORTH RFC THE PAST FEW WEEKS & SQUAD NEWS Our last two visitors to Glasshouse Lane looked, on paper, to be banker home wins but both Shipston & Upton, particularly the former, put up fighting performances to belie their lowly league places. The important thing was that we won both games with a bonus point and this is exactly what we did. The Upton game had been switched to Kenilworth following flooding at their pitch and was played in truly awful conditions which tested the faithful support on the touch-line but six tries earned us a good win The previous week we took on Shipston for our first ever first XV fixture at Glasshouse Lane and came out winners Is it not good to see our front row getting amongst the tries and Jake Dodd and Ross Lowthian have got four apiece (joint second top scorers) with Nick Collett not too far behind on two. Nick is now back from his trip to the Philippines and when Ed Hunter returns from injury and with Rhys playing well there is going to be a big, and welcome, scrap for front row places. The Cavaliers have only played once in the last three weeks and this was a big defeat at Harbury, a team they crushed at the start of the season. Their lack of games is a worrying aspect. The three s have not played in the last three weeks due to a postponements due to frost and rain in the last two weeks and our cry off against Spartans. The Colts are going from strength to strength and have two wins against Nuneaton and Southam and won game rained off. They, and their Head Coach Steve Sutherland, must be looking forward to their Colts Plate game with Moseley, one of Steve s old clubs. The 1st XV squad have suffered a few injuries over the past few weeks but it has demonstrated the depth of squad we have with replacements slipping in seamlessly. James Wadey, Simon Tyler, Nyle Beckett, Bobby Thompson, Dom Sheehan, Tom Kendall and Ian Phillips have all been injured in the last few weeks but, maybe with the exception of Simon (hammy) and Tom (baby coming!) are all now training and/ or playing and we expect the squad to be at near full strength for this week with the exception of full back Andy Whitehall who will be out for the season after suffering a bad injury to his arm that has required an operation. This happened right at the end of the Shipston game and poor Andy is still wondering what he did! Nick Collett has also returned safely and is back training as is fly half Dave Johnson who suffered a bad leg break last season against Burton. Another superb piece of news is Tak Norton. Tak, star of our 05/06 season and partly 08/09, has come back to the UK to do some research on the Maori Culture and has made himself available till mid-late January. He has been duly registered! That game again and it was 27 all at half time, but the lottery does not do 54. Joint top of the league with Old Laurentians but will we win away in 2013? 5 PEACOCK S CORNER Greetings sports fans. It was all planned, you know. Lose to Australia s B team, throw the game against South Africa and then announce ourselves on the world stage as a major rugby power once more by giving the All Blacks a lesson at the Home of Rugby. Stuart Lancaster, take a bow: rugby coach, teacher, philosopher, military strategist. Carter, Hansen, McCaw - you re boys took one hell of a beating. It was like Brigadier James Montgomery luring the Desert Fox to defeat at El-Alamein. Enticing him, stretching the German supply lines before pouncing, Mongoose-like, leaving them marooned, isolated, defeated. At one stage (I was very drunk so this may not be true) I think I even saw Brad Barritt make a break. Quite remarkable, but it was that kind of day. To manage it with only 14 men was even more impressive. On a day on which every England player reached new heights - in Tom Youngs case that s not very high - Chris Ashton still looked hopelessly out of place. He is not the future, mark my words. The good news of Twickenham was followed, of course, by the delightfully helpful draw for the World Cup in As luck would have it England avoided NZ and SA and, as a cheeky bonus, drew the Welsh, a team so bad and over-rated that they have now lost seven on the bounce. England could even get a bye because Wales may have retired from international rugby by the time 2015 comes around. They should consider it. Anyway, let s get back to more pressing matters because I hear on the grapevine that one of New Zealand s greatest exports has arrived back in Kenilworth. I m not talking about the lamb at Waitrose but Takerei Norton who, closely behind Mahana Stone, remains the second best overseas player the club has ever signed. He s back for a couple months, clearly still leading the nomadic Norton existence we came to know so well, totally devoid of direction, focus and responsibility. On a serious note, I d imagine Tak is one of the few people we all are glad to see back at Kenilworth seeing as we re all such backstabbing and hateful bastards. It s especially good news if you happen to play anywhere in the First XV. (I bet he still can t drink, though.) NB: Please make a note in your diary for the 19th December. At 1945 it s the quarterfinal of the Capital One Cup and it s the mighty Chelsea versus Leeds. Probably the two most unpopular sides in English football at various times over the past 40 years are going to relive the foul-tempered FA Cup Final of 1970 (Chelsea won the replay 2-1, incidentally). While Chelsea s unpopularity can be traced to the jealousy of others, Leeds United s is directly linked to that filthy bunch of mongrels - The Irishman, Hunter, Bremner (a disgrace among a team of disgraces) - that butchered the sport in the 70s. Not surprisingly, Paul BTB takes great pleasure from the chequered history. Well, if they beat Chelsea on the 19th I will...i will...er...pay my subs.
