Dudley Sports joint-manager Tony Gore offered a surprise verdict when asked whom he is tipping for this year s title, announcing that he fancies archrivals Lye Town. Whether he has seen enough promise from his near neighbours or was indulging in some Ferguson/Wenger-style mind games was unclear but the Stourbridge Road side were among the beneficiaries at the weekend as Pegasus Juniors were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Wellington just seven days after blitzing a weakened Shifnal Town I think they have as good a budget as anyone in the league, Gore told Serie Z, when tipping Lye for glory, the difference is they are spending it wisely and they are getting the results, so fair play to them. 2 Wulfs and Casuals keep on winning 1 goalkeeper Danny Watson from title-rivals Wolves Casuals. Nearer to home, Sports themselves almost did their neighbours a huge favour on Saturday when they went in at half time 2-0 up against second-placed Shawbury only to slip to a 3-2 defeat. We were a bit unfortunate not to get anything on Saturday, added the Amblecote side s joint boss, we were two up and we should have been four or five ahead because we missed some gilt-edged chances. But the season is going okay for us. We are maybe three or four points short of what we should have had but we are going into games against the best sides expecting to get something out of them and we are mid-table so it s going alright. Gore s charges have a borough derby to look forward to on Saturday, at home to a Dudley Town side who crashed out of the Smedley Crooke Cup with a 4-1 defeat at Phoenix club Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday night. Pegasus aside, the rest of the power six picked up wins at the weekend, with Lye winning 3-2 at Wellington Amateurs; Black Country Rangers beating borough neighbours Cradley Town 5-0; Wolves Casuals winning 2-1 at Bartley Green and AFC Wulfs taking the verdict by the same score at Sporting Khalsa. And Wulfs and Casuals kept up the pressure with handsome wins on Tuesday night, Wulfs blitzing Bewdley Town 6-0 at home whilst Cassies won 3-1 at Wednesfield, to the delight of manager Carl Abbott. We are delighted with the results, Abbott told Serie Z. A couple of solid wins without being spectacular in our performances. We said our focus after the Black Country Rangers game would be to not get too carried away with that result, and consolidate it with a steady run. We now have a tough game on Saturday against a very good Bewdley Town side, who despite their indifferent recent form, we will not be underestimating. Another decent result will see us nicely into a week of cup games and a little break from the league. The squad has settled down nicely and we have whittled the numbers down to a more manageable group. 3 Rangers get back in the saddle refused a seven-day approach from leaders Rangers, lodged shortly after the leaders defeat to Abbott s side. Todd is enjoying his football and is a popular lad around the club and dressing room, added the Wolves boss, we will keep our heads down, keep plugging away and hopefully keep in touch with the leading pack. Floodlight problems at Stourbridge Road meant Lye were unable to open their defence of the Smedley Crooke Cup against rank outsiders Inkberrow on Tuesday. Leaders Rangers put their first back-to-back defeats behind them in style to stay six points clear of Shawbury and Paul Garner s men visit Wednesfield on Saturday with the chance to extend that advantage whilst their Shropshire pursuers visit Mercian League Premier Division side Dawley Town in the Shropshire Challenge Cup. Third-placed Lye host Wellington on Saturday and second-from-bottom Darlaston on Tuesday with the visitors having missed out on Tuesday s planned JW Hunt Cup tie against Wolves United due to an administrative error which meant no match officials were available for the game.casuals host Bewdley on Saturday and play their postponed Walsall Senior Cup tie at home to Evo-Stik Northern League, Premier Division side Stafford Rangers on Tuesday. Wulfs host Bartley Green at the weekend whilst Pegasus will hope to bounce back at home to a lowly Wolverhampton Sporting Community who exited the JW Hunt Cup on Tuesday, 2-0 at Chasetown reserves. Pegasus then have a cup date of their own on Tuesday at home to Hereford Premier League outfit Sinkum FC in an HFA County Challenge Cup quarter-final. It will be a big week for Sporting Khalsa who follow Saturday s derby at Darlaston with a showpiece Walsall Senior Cup tie at home to League One giants Walsall. At the sharp end of the table things look increasingly tough for Darlaston and Bustleholme but Willenhall manager Neil Perks finally secured his first points at Noose Lane with a thumping 6-2 win over neighbours Bustleholme on Tuesday night, threeudays after a 3-1 reverse to Dudley Town. 4 Bromyard Town on the climb After the weekend, when we lost to Dudley with a pathetic performance with no fight, the management team decided to throw the young lads in and they did us proud, Perks told Serie Z. The addition of loan signings Jake Morgan and Ricky Nicholls from Alliance side Gornal Athletic made a difference with the latter hitting a hattrick and Perks added: We took a bit of a gamble and it paid off but it was one of those nights when everything we hit went in and everything they hit we blocked or was well saved by Mathew Rodgers, who I had with me at Dudley Town. We have a lot of hard work still to do but this will give the whole club a lift and hopefully we can find some momentum and push on. Perks has also recruited defenders Gary Simmons, Thomas Rann, Luke Davenport and Jordan Siviter as well as midfielders Micheal Hickman and Adam Alsop along with Ben Mantom - from Kidderminster Harriers - the younger brother of West Brom s Sam. Willenhall host Malvern on Saturday and have a break from league action on Tuesday when the Lockmen host the exotically-named Pendeford Santos in the JW Hunt Cup. Geoff Woodward s Bromyard Town are on the rise after Saturday s 4-2 win at Shifnal made it back-to-back wins and four wins in six for the Herefordshire side. We ve picked up three or four good players and it s made all the difference, Woodward told Serie Z. It has also helped that we ve had a settled a side, which is something we have struggled to get for the past few seasons. There are goals in this team with the likes of Ben Evans around and although I still think we might struggle against the likes of Black Country Rangers and Lye, we can give a game to anyone below them. There s a long way to go yet but anywhere in mid-table or just below would be an achievement. Woodward recruited left-sided Devon Smith from Combination side Perrywood and with striker Shane Wade and right back Alex Spencer unearthed playing Sunday morning football, things are looking up for Bromyard, who leapfrogged their weekend victims. Bromyard visit Cradley on Saturday and host Wednesfield on Tuesday. Shifnal number two Mickey Baker says there are reasons for optimism despite Saturday s reverse, with the arrival of 20-year-old goalkeeper Tyler Sneade from Mercia Division One side Madeley. Tyler was superb, he couldnt do anything about the goals on Saturday, Baker told Serie Z, silly defensive errors at key moments coupled with missed chances cost us again, but credit to Bromyard, u who knocked it around nicely. 3 Action from Bilston s win over Wem Town on Saturday. 5 Darlaston slip to foot of the table Baker will sign three experienced West Midlands League players - who approached Shifnal because they are unhappy at their current clubs - and is looking forward to having influential midfielder Steve Morris back in the fold after an ankle ligament injury in time for Saturday s Shropshire Cup tie at home to West Midlands League Division One side Haughmond, which he predicted would be a very tough game. Shifnal then visit the Bustleholme side immediately below them in a highstakes league game on Wednesday. After guiding his side to an impressive point against Pegasus at the weekend, Wellington s reluctant manager Marc Priday will be in charge against Lye and for the immediate future, according to chairman Phil Smith. He doesn t want to stay manager for much longer but has agreed to stay on for as long as we need him, Smith told Serie Z. Unfortunately it s a difficult time of year to find a manager and clubs are staying loyal at the moment but maybe that will change around Christmas time. Basement boys Darlaston lost 3-1 to Malvern at the weekend and Bustleholme are struggling after a 4-0 defeat to Wolves Sporting Community.
