Summer Term 2014

At the end of last term, we said farewell to a long serving and loyal member of staff who has left the College after 18 years. Val Rothery had worked in a number of roles at Long Serving member of Staff Retires the College, and was well known to all. Val was popular with both staff and students alike and we will miss her good humour and cheery manner around the College. We know that Val will be making the most of her retirement and she is looking forward to some well earned rest and relaxation. Val pictured with Head Teacher Dr P J McGovern

Post 16 student James Wignell who currently plays for Helston Athletic 1 st team was selected as the Number 1 goalkeeper for the Cornwall U18s football team at the start of the season and he has played eight official games. Previously, he has been the goalkeeper for the Cornwall U16 s team. Post 16 student Number 1 Goalkeeper for the Cornwall U18 s Football Team This football season began with a win against Guernsey 4 2 in the National Cup, followed by a win against Wiltshire F.A. 3 1 in the league. Cornwall U18s then went on to win the Southern Counties competition, also known as the Mick Parry Trophy. This was an extremely proud moment as this competition was last won by Cornwall in the 2000/01 season. They got to the Final of the competition by beating Gloucestershire 2 0 in the quarter final, and then knocked out the defending champions and their big rivals, Devon, 1 0 in the semi final. In the final Cornwall dominated the match and won convincingly 2 0 against Oxfordshire. They won the Trophy without conceding a single goal. Another season statistic is that they only concede 1 goal in six games which is another great achievement. James was one of the younger members of the Team and he has the opportunity to represent Cornwall U18s again next season, with that he could win a County cap by playing ten games for Cornwall U18s. He is currently two games away from achieving this in his first season.

On Wednesday 23 rd April Helston Community College played host to a rugby match between its old boys who toured to South Africa in 2010 and the current College 6 th Form Ruby success for current Post 16 Students side. The match was designated as an adult game of rugby and as such only students who were 17 years old and above could take part. The occasion was marked by extremely physical and competitive play with the old boys using their experience and power to take an early lead. However, the current College side is the most successful in recent years with notable wins over several local colleges this season to their credit and they used this to work their way into a 3 point lead that they desperately defended until the final whistle the final score was to the current College side. Following the match old friendships were then renewed in a post match function kindly hosted by Helston Rugby Club.

On Monday 7 th April the Helston Phoenix group held a Car Wash event which was supported by a group of volunteers, Helston Police and mentors, plus a group of young people from Year 7 and 8. Despite the inclement weather they raised 60 towards the purchase of a choking training vest for the Heart Start Helston Phoenix Project. The next day students were involved in the Active Plus Field Craft Course. This activity was run by the Active Plus Team: Chris, Chris and John with support from Josh Sales who was in camouflage! A group of 10 Year 7 & 8 students took part in a twelve week joint project with Active Plus and Helston Phoenix and earned the reward project for their team building skills and good behaviour. Helston Phoenix and Active Plus would like to say a big thank you to the following for supporting this pilot project, which was funded by Helston Community College, West Cornwall Youth Trust, and Co Operative South and West region. Finally thank you to Roger Benney, Higher Nansloe Farm for allowing us to use the farmland for our projects. Helston Phoenix Project

Five gymnasts from Helston Community College travelled to Stoke on Trent this weekend to compete in the British Schools Gymnastics Association National Finals: Matthew Heaney (Y7), Phoebe Jenkin(Y7), Maea Morgan(Y8), Shannon Standing(Y7) and Cameron Wheat(Y8) qualified for the nationals at the regional competition in Taunton in March. Helston College Gymnastics Team win the National Finals! There were eight teams competing for the trophy with some excellent gymnasts. Helston College started on vault with Matthew Heaney scoring for his squat through and Maea Morgan scoring for her handspring and Phoebe Jenkin 15.15,Cameron Wheat and Shannon Standing very close behind. Then came floor with Maea Morgan scoring 14.83, Matthew Heaney 14.60, Cameron Wheat 14.00, Phoebe Jenkin and Shannon Standing All the routines were neat and tidy demonstrating great skills and superb artistry. Matthew Heaney and Maea Morgan were the highest scoring gymnasts in their age group. The team had an overall score of (the 4 top scores being carried through) and the second place team scoring Helston College won by 2.64 marks a fantastic achievement by all the gymnasts. Special thanks go to Ainsti Hickman Jones and Jaron Morgan (former Helston College Gymnasts) who coached the team. Pat Hickman for choreographing floor routines and organising the gymnasts. Swallows Gym Club for the use of their facilities for training and their coaches Ainsti Hickman Jones and Donna Jenkin.

Helston Community College Year 10 student Andy Wingham (15) is one of four winners announced by the Two Moors Festival organisers for their Young Musicians Platform, a prestigious classical music competition in the South West. Andy wins at Two Moors International Festival The competition has been running since 2001 and this is the first time a cornet player has been amongst the winners. Following two rounds of auditions with over 50 very talented young musicians, the winners (including two cellists and a violinist) are invited to play a recital as part of the Two Moors Festival in October 2014, each receiving 250. Andy said I was so excited when I received the letter! I was a finalist last year so knew what was expected, the auditions were a great experience and I am really looking forward to the concert in October 2014.

Three Year 11 students have recently achieved an extra curriculum Award through Cornwall College s Young Leaders Academy. Year 11 students gain ILM Award The Academy is designed to work as a partnership between Cornwall College and Cornish Secondary schools. They work together to identify, support and develop outstanding individuals and equip them with leadership and employability skills that will help them now and prepare them for the future. HCC students Tattianna Haslam, Piran Delves and Andrew Ferris took part in this three day Award in Leadership and Team skills. They started off on day one with an Induction to Leading your team, day two was focused on Developing yourself as a team leader with the final day on Developing the work team. The students were also able to get to grips with the Belbin Behaviour Profile in a get set workshop. They all really enjoyed the course and particularly found learning about Belbin and the different types of learning very helpful. Certificates were handed out to students by Cornwall College s Consultant Trainer Mr John Devlin who commented on the how he was really impressed with the students and how they all passed with top marks. To recognise they achievement the students will be invited to an official Awards ceremony in the coming months.
