1 SPORT Football U13 Kanga Cup in Canberra Many exciting Football events took place during the July holidays. Trinity took two U13 teams to the Kanga Cup in Canberra. A holiday clinic for boys from Kindergarten to Year 9 was conducted over four days during the third week of the holidays, teams trained in the first and last week and Trinity competed against Newington College in the annual AJ Rae Shield. Kanga Cup Tour to Canberra For the eleventh year in a row, Trinity competed at the Kanga Cup in Canberra. It is the largest tournament of its kind with over 350 teams competing from across Australia, Korea and New Zealand. It is the biggest international youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the top five tournaments of its kind in the world. This year Trinity entered two U13 teams. Trinity Green competed in the Cup Division and Trinity White competed in the Shield Division. Each team was placed in Divisions to challenge each player and push them outside their comfort zone. Trinity s objectives at the Kanga Cup are to develop Trinity team spirit, character and combinations. The tournament saw Trinity teams play eleven games in total and this provided tremendous opportunities for player and coach development. Where possible, each team supported the other during their games and seminars were held on leadership, personal organisation, nutrition, hydration, recovery and Trinity Football history. The team did a recovery session at the swimming pool, visited the Australian War Memorial and went to the movies. If ever the opportunity arises to go to the Kanga Cup with Trinity, find a way to say yes and go as the development for player, team and Trinity Football is invaluable. Thank you to physiotherapist Ms Sara Guevara who provided assistance to those needing treatment. She also took the 32 Trinity boys through several hour long practical sessions on how to use a roller to aid in recovery and she also shared her stories from the recent World Taekwondo Championships in Korea where she was a physio with the Australian team. 2 Recovery session with physiotherapist Sara Guevara Thank you to Junior School Sportsmaster Mr Chris Robinson for his supervision and guidance over the course of the week. Thank you also to Coaches Mr Zac Galluzzo and Mr Johnny Dimopoulos for their coaching and supervision during the week. Both of these gentlemen are former 1st XI players, current Trinity Football Coaches and they had the opportunity to develop their Football coaching skills in a 24-7 Football environment. They too went to Kanga Cup as players. Perhaps one of the boys they coached at the 2017 Kanga Cup will take up the opportunity to coach at the 2024 Kanga Cup or beyond... 4 Kanga Cup U13 Green Team Kanga Cup Trinity Green with Canberra Olympic The 2017 Kanga Cup provided the Under 13s Trinity Cup team with an opportunity to test themselves against national premier league sides across Australia. The intensity of the fixtures was a great test of both character and footballing ability and on reflection there were some brilliant individual and team moments. Ahead of the first fixture against Woden Wanderers the team s fervour was clear and through an outstanding individual effort from Daniel Cattana (7St) Trinity gained the early ascendency. However, despite numerous attacking raids from Sebastian Ghisso (7He) and Biaggio Signorelli (7St), two defensive breakdowns resulted in a disappointing loss. The second match day provided the team with their biggest footballing lesson regarding professionalism and preparation as an impressive Queensland Lions side dominated the fixture. Dominic Ticic (7Sc) and Christian Bieri (7Yo) must be commended for their persistence and positivity until the final whistle. Following two tough days of football it was motivating to see sustained focus and excitement leading into the fixture against Belconnen United. Although the game was lost 1-0 there were a number of noteworthy performers. Louis Agosti (7Yo) and Isaac Cunningham (7He) showed composure and guile in midfield, which resulted in a number of threatening chances. Joshua Yeon (7Ar) and Ben Robinson (7Yo) were also exceptional, with both boys playing new positions with seamless comfort. Furthermore Euan Kenny (7Ke) should be recognised for keeping Trinity in the game through some textbook Goal Keeping. The afternoon fixture on match Day 3 against Gungahlin United proved to be the highlight of the week with Trinity showing tenacity in an intense 0- Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 4 of 10

5 0 stalemate. From the back William Martin (8WH) and Ben Powell (8Ho) superbly executed their respective roles, which enabled Eric Mihas (7La) to cause headaches for the opposition backline. Trinity were unlucky not to gain the lead and an inspired save from Joshua Hanna (7Ho) was integral in gaining the point. Joshua Hanna (7Ho) save in penalty shoot out The final two fixtures of the cup provided a monumental challenge for a fatigued Trinity side and this lack of energy showed in a disappointing loss to Broadmeadow Magic. However, in the final match against Canberra Olympic the team showed great desperation, which saw two equalisers in the final ten minutes. Both goals were created through innovative individual play from James Andrianakos (7Yo) who then delivered crosses to Jonathan Gremos (7Fo) who finished both goals with calmness and precision. Although the team didn t progress deep into the tournament semi finals, there were some great football lessons learnt and all boys should take confidence going into the last three rounds of the CAS competition. Zac Galluzzo U13 Green Coach Kanga Cup U13 White Team Report The opening fixture of the Kanga Cup Shield Division saw Trinity take on local side Majura FC Magic. In the first half Trinity dominated possession and with the everpresent threat of Dylan Guler (7WH) lurking up front it didn t prove long before James Schroder (7WJ) dispatched a killer pass, splitting Majura s backline wide open and leaving Guler with the simplest task of finishing. Although Trinity lead 1-0 at the break a fiery Majura took to the field and were able to score two quick goals, dampening Trinity s spirits. Being a game of two halves with Trinity dominating the first and Majura the second, the team was unfortunate to go down 2-1. The second match of the day came against a well-drilled and structured Balmain FC. In the first half Trinity were on the receiving end of a five-goal blitz. However, after Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 5 of 10

6 an instrumental team talk led by Mr Robinson, the boys took to the field with the mindset of winning the second half. Multiple saves from Patrick Williams (7La) spurred the team on and ultimately led to Trinity s first goal scored by Wilson Russell (7Ar). Nevertheless, several minutes later, the referee decided to rule the goal offside. Trinity settled for a 0-0 draw in the second half which was a better reflection of the team s efforts. In Round 3, Trinity faced a relentless and undefeated Camden Tigers who proved to be tough opposition. The match started positively for Trinity, with Ricardo Lucadonato (7La) initiating a phase of play that would see Trinity complete several successive passes before Abbas Zahr (7Fo) finished the move with a superb left footed strike. Though Trinity displayed superior attacking prowess, a lapse at the back resulted in the Tigers scoring consecutive goals from set pieces. Overall, a great attacking display shadowed by poor communication in defence. Round 4 of the shield would see Trinity take on a robust and durable Ramsgate. Although both teams were feeling the effects of playing four games in two days, Ramsgate rose to the occasion and looked the better side from the get go. Nonetheless, the combined efforts of Jeremy Gergis (7St), Lewis Potter (7Fo), Patrick Williams (7La) and Adam Makki (7La) apprehended Ramsgate s illustrious attack to only three goals. Consequently it proved to be one of Trinity s poorer performances throughout the tournament. Now competing in the playoff rounds of the tournament, Trinity were involved in a highly anticipated encounter against Canberra FC. Defensively Antony Borodin (7We) and Lachlan McGrath (7Sc) displayed remarkable composure to retain possession and limit any attacking presence exhibited by Canberra. This form of composure and poise helped Trinity secure a 4-0 half-time lead. Goal scorers included Dylan Guler (7WH), Joshua Marcos (7Fo), Abbas Zahr (7Fo), and Wilson Russell (7Ar). Leading into the second half, Rory Clunas (7Yo) performed incredible saves on numerous occasions, limiting Canberra s chances to a minimal. In the end Trinity rounded out 4-2 Winners demonstrating encouraging signs leading into the last fixture. The concluding fixture of the Shield Division would be a repeat of Round 4 with Trinity facing Ramsgate. Although the first encounter between both sides ended 3-0 in Ramsgate s favour, Trinity demonstrated great persistence and determination throughout the entire match. Starting from the back William Moir (7Hi) and Nicholas Kiceec (7WH) demonstrated a high degree of technical and tactical awareness, as both players were able to intercept opposition passes on numerous occasions retaining possession for Trinity. Going forward Jeremy Pogrebichsky (7Ho) and James Schroder (7WJ) dictated play and were instrumental in creating several attacking opportunities. Unfortunately Trinity were unable to score and had to settle for a 0-0 draw, a great improvement when compared to the side s first encounter. 8 2nd XI 0 3 Loss 10A 0 0 Draw 9A 0 3 Loss 8A 0 1 Loss 7A 4 0 Win 1st XI vs Newington: 0-2 Loss The 1st XI were up for the challenge of playing against a Newington team that was stacked with nine GPS players. Trinity started with high intensity giving Newington little time on the ball and matching it physically in every contest. Samuel Yip (11La) in his 1st XI debut posed many a problem with his pace and it was unfortunate that he would have to go off for X-rays following a fall on his wrist. Cristian Lorenzato (12Fo) created questions for the Newington defence through his positioning in attack and played several delightful killer passes between the opposition defence. Jeremy Adams (11Fo) is going from strength to strength and made his first start for the 1st XI. His opposite number in midfield was two feet taller, yet Jeremy won more headers and more tackles against him and this laid a nice platform from which to attack from. Jeremy was awarded man of the match honours for Trinity along with Trinity Goal Keeper Joshua Hobden (12We). Joshua had his best game of the season making many a save from every position in the Goal Keeper text book. Scoreboard winners were Newington, where they scored a late goal in each half. Confidence winners from the game were Trinity who were up against a highly credentialed team, yet competed with them at every step of the way. Trinity can take great confidence from this performance as they return to CAS tomorrow against Cranbrook. Luke Gray 1st XI Coach 2nd XI vs Newington: 0-3 Loss After a few weeks off it was time to get the boots back on and get the brain back into Football mode. With this in mind, Trinity went into the game against Newington, knowing it was going to be a tough workout. The game started at a good tempo, and our ball movement and pressing was impressive considering the break, but as we started to tire, Newington s aggressive style seemed to take control. Like so many games this year, our poor defending from corners and set pieces let us down and before we knew it, we were 0-2 down, both goals coming from headers where the opposing players jumped unchallenged in our six yard box. To our players credit, they continued to play and the football was good. Our challenge today was a team who relied on long balls, set pieces and a physical style of game. To become better players and team we need to learn to deal with different styles, adapt and impose our style of football onto our opponents. Special mention again to James Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 8 of 10

9 Hart (11Sc) who had a solid game, as well as Romeet Gandhi (12Ho), who worked tirelessly all game. Wally Savor 2nd XI Coach 10A vs Newington: 0-0 Draw In the annual clash with our closest rivals, Trinity produced a solid display of controlled football. However, we were unable to capitalise on our dominant display. We had several opportunities in each half. The defensive midfield pairing of Kevin Cloke (10Du) and Ben Bishop (10Hi) not only broke down the opposition attacks but quickly launched Trinity s offensive plays. Trinity played an expansive brand of football which continually stretched the opposition. Nicholas Field (10WH) deserves a special mention for not only producing a best on ground performance but playing in a totally unfamiliar role on the left side of defence. It was great to see Kenny Chu (10Mu) return to the team after his six week hiatus resulting from a head injury. He played a pivotal role in the #10 position. Late in the game exciting opportunities fell to both Owen Duke (10La) and Alex Williams (10St), however Trinity was unable to convert these, in order to take victory. Notwithstanding the result, the boys deserved credit for their excellent effort and application. Petar Peric 10A Coach 9A vs Newington: 0-3 Loss A depleted 9A team suffered a 0-3 loss against Newington. Yanni Plataniotis (9Sc) showed tremendous perseverance playing through an injury to his little toe. Credit to Goal Keeper Patrick Fouracre (9WH) who put his body on the line on several occasions, of which one lead to taking the second half off as a precaution. Asher Wilson (9La) stepped into the Goal Keeper role and did considerably well. The best football Trinity played was in the first 15 minutes of the second half where our team kept good possession and displayed creativity in the midfield. With everyone back on deck for CAS Round 8, the 9As are aiming to turn back to winning ways. Thank you to the 8A s who backed up for the 9As. Joe Holt 9A Coach 8A vs Newington: 0-1 Loss Trinity came to the game against Newington in holiday mode. It started not so well with the boys conceding a goal in a counter attack in the first ten minutes, after a miscommunication between our back four. This goal was a wake-up call and the boys did lift their game throughout the first half. The team came out to the second period with a winning mentality, holding more possession and creating more goal scoring opportunities. One highlight of the game was Sebastian Boffa s (8Yo) beautiful left foot volley that hit the crossbar. The Trinity boys did better but wasn t enough as the game finished 0-1, the first loss for the Trinity 8A this year. 10 7A vs Newington: 4-0 Win Competing for the AJ Rae shield, the 7As were involved in a highly anticipated encounter against Newington College. Defensively Michael Kwan (7Ar) and Ben Robinson (7Yo) displayed tremendous composure to retain possession and limit any attacking presence exhibited by Newington. This form of composure and poise helped secure a 2-0 first half lead, in which Isaac Cunningham (7He) and Jonathan Gremos (7Fo) successfully demonstrated a high degree of intelligence and technical skill to beat several players and finish. Leading into the second half, Louis Agosti (7Yo) continued to dictate play and was instrumental in the build for Isaac Cunningham s second goal and Joshua Yeon s (7Ar) first. Overall, it was a well deserved 4-0 win. Johnny Dimopoulos Acting 7A Coach Individual Skills Training Between 6:50am - 8:00am on Mondays during term time there will be an individual skills session for any interested Footballer between Years The session will be conducted by Mr Zac Galluzzo and other coaches may be added depending on numbers.
