1 HEAD MASTER'S BULLETIN FRIDAY 27 OCTOBER 2017 SPORT Trinity Basketball Round 1 CAS Round 1 versus Cranbrook 1st V Firsts open the season in front of a big crowd in style. A very young Trinity walked onto the court to start the new CAS season with a little uncertainty, but by the middle of the second period looked very comfortable with the added responsibility. Jack Nichol (10He) made his presence felt in the middle with some strong baskets, while Ethan Bateman (10WJ) controlled the tempo and attacked the basket with purpose to see Trinity ahead by seven points (25-18) at quarter time. Tom Corias (12Hi) provided great spark off the bench, making plays at both ends of the court and Luke Gabriel (12Hi) picked up a quick couple of baskets, as Trinity s pressure defence began to open the game up to give the Greens a commanding lead (53-31) at the halftime break. Trinity continued to dominate after the break, with Earvin Dizon (10Ta) crashing the boards hard and finishing off on the break from some excellent passing and vision by Finn McCann (10Hi). Richard Ziade (11Mu) worked hard at both ends, often finding open teammates to see Trinity in control at the completion of the third period (70-45). The highlight of the game came from youngster Theo Kidd (9WJ) who threw down a thunderous dunk in traffic, but what impressed the coaching staff was his relentless rebounding and commitment to running the floor hard. Luke Nichol (10He) made a solid return from injury with a big last quarter pouring in 12 points. In the end it was a solid beginning for Trinity and to finish with a triple digit score (105-63) will give this young group confidence. Leading Statistics Jack Nichol 20 pts. 10 rebs. Earvin Dizon 20 pts 6 rebs. Theo Kidd 11 pts 14 rebs. Luke Nichol 16 pts. 4 rebs Ethan Bateman 10 pts. 4 stls. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 1 of 7
2 2nd V A fantastic start to kick-off the CAS season saw Trinity embrace the home-court advantage to come away with a 14-point victory. Justin Jasa (12Ho) and Cooper Young (12He) were both strong early in the first half, taking care of business at both ends of the floor. In his first season in the 2nds, William Bonaccorso (12St) certainly showed his worth to the team, grabbing rebounds and displaying shades of finesse around the rim, inspiring the Greens to a double digit lead (26-15) at the main break. Cranbrook began the second half with an inspirational run of their own, tying the game up at David Carreon (12St) slowed the pace with a few settling jump shots and trips to the free-throw line, while Jonathan Roseworn (12WJ) showcased his lockdown defence on the perimeter. Special mention must go to James Corben (11WJ) and Harry Barden (12Yo) for properly closing the game out, helping Trinity to claim the win. Leading Scorers David Carreon 15 pts. Justin Jasa 10 pts. Cooper Young 6 pts. 5th V The 5ths performed a miraculous rescue to come from a 12-point deficit with ten minutes to go and pinch a victory by a single basket. The final stages of the match are where the Green Machine found their mojo demonstrating tenacity and desire to create turnover ball and upset Cranbrook s rhythm via our improved application of the full court press in D. Hugh Casimir (11WJ) from the point position took control of the game in the second half, forcing steals and sinking an important 3. His calm and intelligent play with and without the ball made him MVP. Mahdi Makki (12La) and Thomas Newell (12Yo) showed their strength, effort and desire required in defence, with Riley Welfare (12St) relentless on the boards. 6th V The Greens started the season with a dominant victory. Max McCluskey-Voight (12Ar) and Nathan Roberts (11We) were dominant in defence and offence and sharing the MVP. Christopher Raad (11Ta), Jacob Savage (12Ho), Julius Blum (12Ar) and Adam Chang (11St) combined very effectively from the perimeter to create multiple offensive plays and land a number of shots. Ethan Thomas (12He) and Luc Bonnell (11Ar) played with intelligence and skill in the paint. 9th V In a hard-fought game that came right down to the wire, both teams couldn t be separated, finishing in a tied result. Excellent leadership by William Raptis (12Ta) and Joseph Gadalla (11Fo) kept the team focussed and ensured that the Greens stayed just ahead of Cranbrook throughout. Jackie Gan (11Sc) had a truly outstanding game and was the best player on the day without doubt. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 2 of 7
3 Year 10A With several players out injured, the Trinity dug deep and delivered a resilient performance in securing a 12 points victory. Bailey Plummer (Du) led the team superbly, producing an incredibly dominant display in which he scored at will and facilitated his teammates with crafty assists and crucial blocks. Joel Passerini (Hi) was impressive, scoring 22 points with accurate long-range shooting and strong finishing around the hoop, whilst Joseph Nassif (He) effectively utilized his athletic prowess to make crucial contributions during transition play. Year 9A The Greens got off to a slightly slower than expected start. Thomas Buvac (WJ) coming back from sickness was instrumental in running the team efficiently, while Jamie Christopoulos (Ar) provided an extremely effective inside presence. Throughout the game, Deonte Williams (Yo) was crucial with his play, both being a pest on defence and a reliable attacking threat. After a somewhat tightlycontested first half, Trinity were able to pull away to secure a convincing 21-point win. Year 9B Trinity had a great start to the CAS season, recording a 19-point win. The key for Trinity was the defensive intensity which stretched full court, limiting Cranbrook to just one basket in the first half. This defensive intensity led by Sebastian Boffa (Yo) up front and Jacob Stark (Fo) at the back getting deflections, loose balls and rebounds had a huge impact. Year 9C Right from the opening tip Trinity took control of the game. Alistair Roseworn (WJ) could not be contained, dropping a game high 15 points. In the second half there were patches of excellent defence led by Jonathon Matta (La) and Lewis Kanellos (He), which enabled the Greens to take a further sizeable lead. Cranbrook kept fighting till the end, but once Brian Tran (Ho) stamped his authority on both ends of the floor there was no coming back. Year 9D Overall was a very dominant showing from the Ds. Trinity managed to score the majority of their points inside with another good offensive performance by Adam Pascale (Ke). Thomas Yarrow (Ho) had a good defensive game which resulted in many steals and fast break opportunities. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 3 of 7
4 Year 9E A chippy first half saw a number of boys in early foul trouble, but the team regained their composure during half-time and were able to prevail over Cranbrook by nine points. The leadership of Daniel Soldatos (Hi) was instrumental in keeping heads cool, whilst Andy Lee (Fo) distinguished himself under the basket with a number of key rebounds. The team is gelling well, and the boys are growing in their ability to execute unselfish plays. Year 9F Trinity dominated all aspects of the game from beginning to end. Admirably, the boys stayed committed to the defensive end right up until the final whistle. On the offensive end, Cranbrook struggled to find an answer to the athleticism of Jordan Mikhael (Ke), whilst rebounding from Matheson Harricks (We) and Theo Fatseas (Du) led to a number of second chance points. Year 8A It was a sluggish first half by the Greens; however, Trinity were revitalized by great contributions off the bench from Sami Hatoum (St) and George Robson (He) who ran the lanes hard and hit their open shots. In the end it was a dominant victory, but this young group will demand a higher standard this coming week. Year 8B The 8Bs got off to a great start, with Matthew Nicolas (Yo) orchestrating the team crisply from the point guard spot. Alexander Saba (WJ) was tremendous on the boards resulting in a solid win. Year 8C Both teams started fast in an up-tempo game. However, the Greens made the most of their opportunities and finished on top by 25 points with each player scoring. Rory Clunas (Yo) and Alisi Leao (Mu) played fantastically at both ends of the court, while Mackenzie Stewart (He) managed to apply enough pressure to force Cranbrook to turn over the ball on multiple occasions. Year 8D Trinity looked like a different team this week, jumping out to an early lead against Cranbrook. Eden Taouk (WJ) was especially strong under the basket scoring 14 points and was supported by William Moir (Hi) on 10 points. Rupert Dobbin (Du) had a controlled first game with the Ds and showed his willingness to do his job for the team. The team shows great promise after a great victory. 5 Year 8E Trinity controlled the game early on, with Hunter Goldsbrough (Fo) and Jack Greaves (We) linking up on several occasions to secure a number of first half points. The second half however, saw Cranbrook s centres dominate. With only one point separating the sides in the dire seconds, Trinity s Isaac Cunningham (He) produced the match winning play. Year 8F Trinity exploded out of the blocks with some great pressure on defence, resulting in easy baskets to Anthony Jomaa (We) and Jordan Tang (Du). Cranbrook struggled to score, as Trinity continued to dominate all over the court. James Andrianakos (Yo) used his athleticism to create opportunities for himself and teammates. Year 8G Despite chasing everything down, Trinity found it hard to build scoreboard pressure and as the game went on, the lead dwindled to within a basket, but in the end Trinity prevailed. In a day when baskets just wouldn t drop, special mention goes to Biaggio Signorelli (St) for his control of the ball around the court, and Ari Nikolakopoulos (Yo) for sinking much needed baskets early on. Joshua Yeon (Ar) also ensured that our possession was high due to solid rebounding. Year 8H Trinity skipped away to an early lead, thanks to the sharp shooting of Joseph Lin (St). Joseph has really mastered the art of the lay-up and by games end, he had scored half of the team s points. Other standout performers were Andrew Tanous (Du) and Blake Hui (Ta) whose positional sense and ball control ensured that our pressing game was effective. Year 8I The mighty 8Is were in control throughout the whole game, Paul Vedroumianos (Du) and Leo Zantides (La) stopped Knox s fast- breaks and created numerous scoring opportunities for Trinity, where Jaiden Timperi (Hi) benefited most, scoring 14 points for the game.
