NSW SUBURBAN RUGBY UNION RUGBY RUGBY NSW NSW SUBURBAN SUBURBAN UNION UNION ANNUAL REPORT

Chairman s Report In a particularly gloomy time in history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated, The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Now, I hear a lot of fearful naysaying around Rugby, but I think those of us that love and participate in our great game should adopt a bit of FDR s attitude. Let s not be afraid of the current challenges in Rugby. We will all face up to them and do our best to overcome them. And while we do, will we continue to enjoy being part of Rugby? Of course we will. Will we continue to grab hold of the friendships, the physicality, the spectacle and joy of Rugby? Of course we will, because this is what Subbies Rugby is all about. These are the things I choose to discuss in my report this year. The year s highlight for me was the smoothly-run, trouble-free, thoroughly enjoyable Division One Grand Final Day at T G Millner Field. The splendid weather was matched by the footy. All six grand finals were played in the right spirit, with a good humoured crowd watching on, enjoying every minute. The main game, the Kentwell Cup, was gripping, going down to the wire as the Mosman boys dared to finally get their hands on the famous trophy. I will not soon forget the sight of that joyous Mosman crowd swarming on to the field at full time. Congratulations to Colleagues for yet another outstanding season, resulting in a 1st Division club championship. They were joined by Waverley, Hawkesbury Ag and the all-conquering Blacktown, all of whom won their respective club championships by concentrating on efficient management, good coaching and effective recruitment. All successful clubs, of which there are many in Subbies, work hard on these areas, these things they can DO. Sitting around bemoaning the state of Rugby is not high on their to-do list. I would also like to make special mention of the Suburban Clubs of the Year. These clubs were honoured for their on-field AND off-field performance, for their emphasis on the can do. Mosman, Waverley, Beecroft, Sydney Irish and Menai all had sterling seasons and are the pride of Subbies. Well done. Another great example of a can-do club is Lane Cove. Sitting in 6th Division they have no business having a colts team, right? Tell that to Rob Sinclair and the Lane Cove go-getters who made up the Radford Cup winning colts team. Joined by Oatley and Burraneer, these clubs provided footy for young men whose age group is vital to Rugby s future. Our Representative Teams did us proud. The results, stats, facts and figures of the representative season are detailed on page 9, but I d like to pay tribute to the 2 can-do people who make up our rep teams. Stalwart players Matt Battishall and Michael Howes regained representative honours after a five year absence from the team and deserve special mention. Retiring coach Damon Baffico s record as rep coach is outstanding, as is his unflappable nature. In partnership with Kristian Berghofer, Damon has a 75% winning record. The Union owes a great debt of gratitude to Damon and Kristian for their work and commitment. Captain Dan Kelly is a true ambassador for Subbies Rugby and his club, Colleagues. This was Dan s sixth year in the rep team, his fifth as captain. The obvious joy with which he plays rubs off on his teammates and spectators in rugby s version of the multiplier effect. Coach Gerard McLenaghan was involved in the senior and colts rep teams and we thank him for his time and expertise. He singlehandedly runs the Union s Colts 7s rep program and is a fine coach and mentor to his young players. On behalf of the Union I thank all the representative players and management for their efforts. I hope you had fun, made new friends and learnt a bit. The Union s Presentation Night gave us a chance to honour and celebrate two outstanding members of the Subbies family, and I would like to add my personal congratulations. Firstly to Harry Maniatis, recipient of the Peter Kelly Medal for Service to Rugby, who has devoted 24 years to Canterbury RFC. Harry is the epitome of a can-do Rugby man, getting things done for his club and the Union in a no-nonsense manner. And well done to Menai s Mark Inglis, the Union s Coach of the Year. Mick Kennedy, legendary Mosman player and administrator and now life member of Subbies.

Mark has spearheaded Menai s on-field success, winning three premierships in their first two years. Menai has been a wonderful addition to our Union. Long may they be part of the Subbies family. Also, at last year s AGM, the Union unanimously elected Mick Doc Kennedy as a life member. Mick s long rugby career as a player and administrator with his beloved Mosman Whales, along with his service to Suburban Rugby, is legendary. He deserves every accolade that comes his way. This Union is a much better organization because of the work and dedication of people such as Harry Maniatis, Mark Inglis and Mick Kennedy. Thank you to my fellow Board members for their efforts throughout the year. Thanks also to our volunteers on the Judiciary (who fortunately had a lot less to do this season) and the Appeals Tribunal. Our newly constituted Integrity Committee had a busy year and I congratulate them for carrying out their (at times) difficult task. Our loyal sponsors continue to help us defray costs to clubs and we are most grateful to them for their ongoing support. Finally, thank you to the Union s staff of Mark Green and Tim Richards for their professional approach to rugby administration. I know it is appreciated by our clubs. To end, I wish to emphasize that I am not seeking in this report to minimize or downplay the issues we face as a sport and as a Union. The Board and staff are very well aware of those issues and continue to work to address them, in close consultation with our clubs. But I have sought here to remind us how lucky we are to be involved in such a magnificent game, working and playing with fantastic, committed people. So, to all clubs, players and officials, enjoy the off-season and thank you once again for your support and efforts. Paul Timmins Chairman Briars and Canterbury enjoying the post-match camaraderie of Subbies Rugby. 3

Executive Director s Report The highlight of the 2016 season was undoubtedly Mosman RFC breaking its 62 year drought to win the Kentwell Cup. A nail-biting finish against Colleagues saw jubilant scenes at TG Millner Field, with the Mosman faithful invading the field at full-time to savour the moment. A small contribution from Subbies to a year of drought breaking sporting achievements around the globe. The dashboard on page 8 outlines a number of interesting trends in Suburban Rugby. For the first time in many years our player numbers increased, bucking the trend across most organised team sports. Of course, this must be tempered by the fact that our team and club numbers continued to drop, albeit at a slower rate. Pleasingly, there are a couple of new clubs who have already applied to join the Union next year. In 2013 the Board commenced its plan of reducing Divisional sizes to streamline divisions, allowing for extra byes and a shorter commitment to the season. In 2016 this had filtered through all Divisions with Division One fielding eight clubs for the first time. Congratulations to Colleagues for taking out back-toback Bruce Graham Shields. Well done to Waverley who return to our Premier division in 2017 after a ten year absence following their Reliance Shield win. Hawkesbury Agricultural College won the Keith Harris Shield for Division Three Club Champions as well as the Clark and Farrant Cups in their 125th year. A resurgent Blacktown took out the Herlihy Shield for Division Four Club Champions and in a remarkable achievement took out the Cowboy Cup for inter-divisional competition. 16 teams participated at the annual Subbies 7s in March. Congratulations to Hunters Hill who won the 7s Cup over Blacktown. Almost 200 people attended Presentation Night which saw Mosman s winning streak continue with Dan Farrell taking out the Kentwell Medal and the Club named as the Division One and overall Club of the Year. Congratulations to Tim Martin and his committee for their efforts this year. Harry Maniatis was a popular winner of the Peter Kelly Medal for service to rugby. Harry s involvement with Canterbury goes back 24 years as a player and official and his friendship with the late Peter Kelly made the award even more special. Mark Inglis won the Coach of the Year Award and his efforts coaching Menai to back to back premierships in their first two years in Subbies was quite an achievement. Disappointingly, in August Lindfield were found guilty 5 of breaching the Union s strict amateur status. This involved sanctions being imposed on the club and individuals. All clubs are now on notice as to how serious the Union is on stamping out financial inducements to players. This was supported by Club s voting for constitutional changes 12 months ago to ensure that the Integrity Committee had a strong footing within the Union. My thanks to our Integrity Committee Chairman Graham Gorrie and his Committee for doing a difficult job well. Judiciary offences reduced by 30% this season. This statistic is quite impressive given the Union s automatic red card for striking policy. A record 19 Clubs (see page 8) had an unblemished record this season. The Union s thanks to Judiciary Chairman Mark Groom, Deputy Chairman Pat Barrett and the entire Judicial Committee for their dedication, meeting on over 20 occasions during the season. The Union will report a financial deficit for This is the sixth such deficit in a row with losses now totalling $142K over this time. Fortunately, the Union s Boards had foresight over the previous 15 years, accumulating reserves for the rainy days. Whilst we have dented our capital, our reserves are still strong. Over the last two years the Union has partially absorbed the National Participation Fee and this contributed to a significant loss in This subsidy will be phased out over the next 12 months as the Union attempts to minimise losses. Some very wet weather in the lead up to the opening week of the finals saw several venue changes and this adversely affected our gate takings, with most lastminute venues unable to charge admission. A $20K appreciation in the Union s Ausbil Managed Fund Investment partially off-set the Union s loss. Whilst there is seemingly more money in the game than ever through television rights, there is no trickledown to grass roots rugby. In fact, it is now a trickleup arrangement. This places extra pressures and costs on clubs and, in turn, players. As a result, sponsorship becomes more important than ever so it was pleasing that we had a record year for sponsorship dollars. Thank you to our generous sponsors particularly The Rugby Club, AGL and Magners. Special mention to long term sponsors, Coca-Cola (22 years), Interfuse (20 years), Gilbert (20 years), Leuko/Elastoplast (18 years), Icons of Sport (12 years) and Unified Security for their ongoing association with the Union. Clubs support of these sponsors helps us to help you, so please consider them first. The representative team racked up an impressive victory against Queensland Suburban to retain the Barraclough Shield under-lights at Rawson Park, though we lost the Maher-Ross Cup to a strong Country outfit a fortnight later at Latham Park. Thank you to coach

Damon Baffico. The Colts 7s representative team again performed well at the Southern Highlands 7s and particularly at the Mudgee 7s where they made it through to the Cup semi-finals. The Union thanks our dedicated 7s head coach Gerard McLenaghan. It was the end of an era when Ed Radford (Colleagues) passed away on 12 May. Ed was a former Vice President, Board member, and trophy Donor who regularly attended grand final days to present his trophy. So we were pleased that his daughters were able to attend and present the Radford Cup to Lane Cove Colts in July. Congratulations to Michael Doc Kennedy who was honoured with Life membership at the 2015 AGM. There wouldn t have been many happier people than Mick following Mosman s epic Kentwell Cup win this year and we congratulate him on being the Union s 16th life member. Pleasingly, Graeme Kennan has been nominated for life membership tonight - an honour he thoroughly deserves. Graeme is well known on the Subbies scene having been an active member of the St Ives Committee since the 1970s and has been ground marshalling Subbies finals series games since The Union welcomed Dylan Schofield onto the Board. Dylan s experience as a player and former representative player has been most appreciated. Thank you to all Board members for their service to the Union over and above their own club commitments. Thank you to John Morrison who this year took over from Paul Timmins as the Union s Director on the NSW Rugby Union Board. Our appreciation to Paul who stood down from the NSWRU Board after he reached his term limit of six years. Paul has continued in his role as Chairman of our Union and maintained his position as a Director on the Waratahs Board. Thank you to all our staff. Matt Kellahan and Lisa Kane as the Premiership Competition Managers as well as Kerry Brady and Susan Stenning who manage the SJRU Competitions and our Administration Assistant Beth Ward. To Tim Richards who singlehandedly runs the Subbies competition, thank you for your commitment this year. The Union thanks NSWRU for their support particularly through the provision of referees and we look forward to a continued good relationship with the Union through newly appointed CEO Andrew Hore. We bade farewell to Robin Timmins in February after 48 years employ at NSW Rugby Union. Many of you will know Robin as the referee appointments officer, a role she undertook for the last 20 years. We wish Robin well in her retirement. To all club members thank you for your contributions during Enjoy the off-season and I look forward to your continued participation in Mark Green Executive Director 6 A St Pats player, sponsor s product in hand, heading for the line.

Representative Team Report The Subbies Representative Team began its 2016 twomatch rep program in late April, guided once again by Damon Baffico and Kristian Berghofer, and joined this year by Gerard McLenaghan. After 80 player nominations and two selection trials the final team comprised players from 13 clubs, from four of the Union s five divisions. Eight players returned from last year s undefeated team, and notably, two old timers, Michael Howes (Mosman) and Matt Battishall (Oatley), returned to the representative ranks after an absence of five years. Also, Dan Kelly (Colleagues) returned to captain the side for the 5th season in a row. The first representative match was against Queensland Subbies, played on the Friday night of the June long weekend at Mosman RFC s magnificent Rawson Park. Over many encounters with Queensland Subbies, whether they ve won or lost, their forwards have always been hard to get on top of. This year however, the NSW pack stamped its authority on the match early, and never really let up. Home-ground hero, Hooker Dan Farrell (Mosman), bagged the first two tries from bustling forward play. That pressure kept up throughout the first half, with the half-time score line of 12-0 to NSW flattering the visitors. The scond half saw pressure converted to points, with NSW quickly putting the game out of Queensland s reach. Four more tries followed, one from a cheeky kick into the corner happily snaffled up by classy winger Cameron Beach (Collegaues). The final score of 38-3 reflected a game in which NSW dominated and in the process secured the Barraclough Shield for the eighth year in a row. Two weeks later the Subbies Rep team (with two forced changes) lined up at Latham Park against the NSW Country Cockatoos. Subbies had first use of a strong wind, but failed to 9 capitalise on the conditions, missing two penalty shots in the first 10 minutes. It was Country who posted the first score of the match when a turnover was converted into a long range try. Subbies continued to pump the ball into the Cockatoos half, eventually closing the gap with a Dan Kelly (Colleagues) penalty goal, but at the thirty minute mark the Cockatoos scored again from an attacking lineout. The second half opened with Subbies lifting the tempo and within minutes hooker Dan Farrell (Mosman) charged over following a series of pick and drives. It was game on as Subbies were back in the match with their tails up. Country weathered the storm however and soon the match was swinging in their favour, with three unanswered tries pushing Country s lead to Subbies, on the back of open running and good support play, tested the Cockatoos defence, and were twice held up over the line. Finally, but too late, Subbies worked a blind side play for winger Pat Simpson to cross for a converted try to make the final score The Country victory evens the Maher-Ross Cup ledger, with Country and Suburban now having won the trophy three times each. A big thanks to all the players and clubs who represented their Union this year. Thank you also to all the club coaches who helped in team selection, and to those players who nominated, trialled and trained with the rep squad. Thank you to coaches Damon Baffico, Kristian Berghofer and Gerard McLenaghan for giving their time and skill. Our gratitude goes to our physios, Andrew Donovan and Peter Forch, and also to manager Damien Johnson. Job well done to all of you. Finally, congratulations to all the rep players, and the clubs they represented so proudly.

Colts 7s Representative Team Report The NSW Suburban Rugby Colts 7s Representative Program is designed to promote the Union s colts competitions (which the Board is determined to expand), reward our best colts players, and aid in player development. Now in its third year, the program has settled into a post-season format, with our colts participating in the Southern Highlands 7s in Bowral, and the Mudgee 7s. After trialling and training for three weeks the final Colts team travelled to Bowral. Pooled with some formidable competition, including the NSW Rugby rep team, tough games ensued and results did not go our way until the third pool match against North Lakes. That win got us into a semi where, although we narrowly lost, the colts showed some tough resolve and a glimpse of what the team could do. In Mudgee the next week, having learnt from Bowral s baptism of fire, the team started to click, racking up big wins in the pool matches and being pipped by West Harbour in the Cup quarter final. Thank you to all the clubs who nominated players for this year s 7s program; and to those players who nominated, trialled and trained but didn t make the final team. Thank you to coach Gerard McLenaghan, who organises and runs all aspects of the Colts 7s program with minimum fuss and maximum efficiency. Also Wais Qualulu for assisting Gerard this year. Finally, congratulations and thank you to the selected Colts 7s players. We hope you had fun, learned some new skills, and are now committed ambassadors for Subbies colts. 11 Southern Highlands 7s - 1 October 2016 Game 1: NSWRU Red 36 def Subbies 0 Game 2: Warringah 27 def Subbies 0 Game 3: Subbies 39 def North Lakes 5 Men s Semi #6: Riverina 19 def Subbies 14 Mudgee 7s - 8 October 2016 Game 1: Subbies 24 def Deadwood 5 Game 2: Subbies 45 def Mudgee 5 Cup Quarter Final: West Harbour 17 def Subbies Colts 7s Representative Team Sam Carwadine (Mosman) Harry Cole (Colleagues) Xavier Costa (Lindfield) Harvey Duncan (Colleagues) Liam Frank (Blue Mountains) Justin Hassett (UNSW) Lachlan Jackson (Drummoyne) Andrew Kaine (UNSW) Dan Keogh (UNSW) Will Morgan (Lindfield) Poasa Naikavalu (Hills) Liam Rowntree (UNSW) Gerard McLenaghan (Coach) Wais Qualulu (Assistant Coach)
