2 Event Welcome & Introduction WELCOME to our special Class 50 Golden Jubilee Gala event. This never-to-be-repeated event celebrates 50 years of the popular Class 50 diesel-electric locomotives and is something the SVR is very proud to be hosting. The Class 50s represent the final passenger diesel type designed for British Rail and also the final link with the transition from steam to diesel traction on the main line railway network. Indeed, SVR-based No (or No. D435 as it was then) was introduced to traffic on August , and the final BR steam-hauled passenger train operated the following day. Initially built to operate fast express passenger services on the West Coast Main Line north of Crewe, following electrification of that route in 1974, the locomotives were transferred to the Western Region of British Rail where they continued in service until March In 1978, the whole fleet of 50 locomotives was named after Royal Navy Warships, which continued a long railway tradition. The first examples of the class entered preservation in 1991, and in May the following year, No became the first to haul a public passenger train in private ownership appropriately here on the SVR. Thus began a long-standing relationship between the SVR and The Fifty Fund / Class 50 Alliance, during which, over the last 25 years, the SVR has become the spiritual home of the 50s in preservation. As well as an intensive timetable of Class 50- themed attractions taking place over the weekend. I would like to thank all the SVR staff and volunteers who have assisted in planning this event, the owners of the visiting locomotives and our friends at GB Railfreight and Hanson Railway Solutions for their assistance with loco movements. Last, but by no means least, I must especially thank Chris Milner (The Railway Magazine) and Paul Bickerdyke (Rail Express) for their considerable support and for production of the stunning souvenir brochure. Enjoy the event!
