2 Maddie Burdick Delaney Fechalos Natalie Goodman Caroline Gualdoni holeman adds nine for 2014 season Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Steve Holeman, the Georgia soccer team has inked nine players on National Signing Day 2014, set to join the program in the fall. Three players - Maddie Burdick, Natalie Goodman, and Rebecca Rasmussen - are already on campus as early enrollees. The class includes four players ranked in the Girls IMG Academy 150 by TopDrawerSoccer.com, the fourth-most of any school in the nation: Rasmussen (31), Goodman (47), Burdick (59), and Delaney Fechalos (110). The most recent signing class supplements a returning roster of three seniors, six juniors, and 15 sophomores from 2013, and is comprised of two forwards, three midfielders, and four defenders. Geograpically, the group is heavy on Georgia players as usual, with five of the nine coming from the Peach State and joined by two players from Colorado, one from Tennessee, and one all the way from Belgium. The group includes three players from the U.S. U-18 National Team pool in Fechalos, Goodman, and Rasmussen, in addition to one player from her country s U-19 squad - Shayna Raekelboom (Belgium). In all, the group includes five players with international experience, factoring in Burdick s time with the U.S. U-15s. Over the past several years, freshmen have played a vital role in Georgia s success on the pitch. In the last seven seasons, three Bulldogs have been named SEC Freshman of the Year (Carrie Patterson in 2006, Kelli Corless in 2007, and Laura Eddy in 2009). The 2012 and 2013 campaigns saw the Bulldogs start several freshman and get significant minutes from its classes of rookies. In 2013, Marion Crowder continued the recent SEC All-Freshman Team trend and made her mark immediately, leading the team in goals (11), points (23), and game-winning goals (7). 3 Very rarely will you find a player that commands the respect of an entire team, without having to say a word. Maddie Burdick is that player. She silently and diligently goes about her job on the field, and is a player that everyone will follow. When she does speak, even with her quiet demeanor, her words speak volumes. The outstanding technical skill set that Maddie possesses does not remotely minimize the desire she has to do the dirty work necessary of a central/defensive-mid. Coaches and teammates love a player like Maddie, because her understanding of the game and football IQ make her an immediate extension of the coach while on the field, and helps to calm everyone playing around her. - Demetrius Donald, Atlanta Fire Maddie is very smooth on the ball and really understands the game. She s a technically gifted midfielder who is very dependable in possession. She sees the field very well and her distribution is excellent. 4 Del is one of the best, if not the best, ball-playing center backs to come through the club. Her comfort with the ball at her feet, coupled with her short and long range distribution, makes her a phenomenal asset to a back line from the very beginning. This ability allows to team to either confidently and slowly build from the back, or play long on the counter if the game demands it. She s a kid that loves the game and studies her craft, and it shows in her ability to read passing lanes and anticipate the actions of her opponents. She carries on to the field her jovial, enthusiastic off-the-field personality, but adds the necessary bite to it the moment the whistle blows. Her play as a central defender should stand as a nice model for all young center backs coming up in the game. - Demetrius Donald, Atlanta Fire Delaney comes from a strong playing back ground with both her club and Region III team. She has been a starting center back at every level and understands what it will take to compete at the collegiate level. 5 Natalie has brought so much joy to my life in the four years I have had the honor and privilege to coach her. Natalie s story is amazing and I am so excited for all she will bring to UGA. It is amazing to think that this young woman who lived in Savannah has been able to achieve the accomplishments she has, playing for a team in Georgia which invariably meant little team training. However, it is a testimony to her desire, work ethic and character that she finds herself with the wonderful opportunity to play at UGA. I am very excited for all she will bring, and expect her development to sky rocket as she settles into a consistent training environment. in addition, her character is exemplary, so much so that her teammates voted her as captain the last three years even though she lived so far away. This also lends itself to the fact that she is a good leader both on and off the field and truly leads by example. 6 Caroline has the engine that a number 10 must have. That is not something that can be coached into a player. Her desire to constantly get on the ball, her creativity to pick a final pass with any surface of either foot, and her ability to arrive into the box late and finish with her feet or her head, make her a constant threat throughout the entirety of the game. She s adept with both feet, and has an uncanny way of being involved with the big goal the team needs at the right moment either supplying it or finishing it herself. Caroline plays the game with an energetic and youthful finesse, but will crunch a player in a 50/50 tackle without hesitation the type of tackle that galvanizes the entire team. She s an absolute joy to play alongside of, as well as watch play from a distance. - Demetrius Donald, Atlanta Fire Caroline is a quick and feisty midfielder who brings a lot of energy to the field. 7 Kelsey Killean is one of the best forwards in the state of Colorado. Her speed sets her apart from her opponents. Her natural instinct to go to goal makes her very difficult to defend. Kelsey s work ethic and attitude are two qualities that make her an exceptional athlete. - Heather Solar, FC Boulder Kelsey is an all-out burner. Her pure speed is exceptional, which makes her a very dangerous attacking presence. She s a player that opponents will have to account for because of her ability to get behind defenses. Her versatility is evident in that she can play as a center back, midfielder or up top. She is exceptional with the ball at her feet and has a high soccer IQ to match. 11 Carly has brought so much joy to my life in the three years I have had the honor and privilege to coach her. I love Carly s story and am so excited for all she will bring to UGA. Carly was introduced to the highest competition level of ECNL three years ago. It is remarkable for me to see her development in that short time and I believe her up-side is enormous. She is without a doubt one of the fastest, quickest players with a natural left foot, and just as comfortable on her right side. Her ability in the air has improved dramatically and I would look for her to push to make an impact fairly quickly, but I can tell you that you will notice her pace. Carly is also one of the most dedicated and respectful young ladies, she is a team player and will do whatever it takes to support and improve herself and her team.
