Issue, Date Quisque: Welcome to Newsletter Summer 2015 Welcome The Australia Day Pairs, held on 26 January was a great success. Thanks to Robyn & Pauly for organising the event 1
!This year the Gold Coast held its 54th bridge congress and many players from our own club attended. The main pairs event is split into 5 divisions; Open, Seniors, Intermediate, Restricted and Novice At the start of the competition, on the Saturday there was a general playoff for each division. In the Intermediate section there were 120 pairs. The result of this, on Sunday, they were 54 th Gold Coast Congress then split into 5 Sections: Final A, Final B, Final C, Final D and Final E. David and John were in Final A (top)and there were 28 pairs in total in this section. Over the next two days (it finished Monday afternoon) after many games and many opponents played they were declared the overall Champions Congratulations to David and John Winners of the Intermediate Pairs Section for 2015 at the Gold Coast Congress Introducing a Section for players with less than 5mps For a couple of Fridays in February there was a section for the players straight out of lessons to play in a Restricted Section. This was for players with less than 5mps. This proved popular and many of these players are now playing regularly on Fridays, Saturday and Tuesday nights. Welcome to all the new players now playing at our club 2
On Friday 27 March, the club donated all the table fees and any extra that the members gave to the Vanuatu cyclone. A total of $585 was raised. The committee will now decide how much to put in to be able to send off a substantial amount to the relief fund. This was an excellent effort and thanks to all those who donated Again at the Gold Coast Congress, Brent Manley, one of the Bulletin editors wrote an article on Fran and Jamie in the Monday s issue. It makes interesting reading. I had huge issues trying to insert this into this letter so please excuse the small red numbers and sqiggley S s. I do not know where they came from or how they got there. If anyone can tell me how to get rid of them, please let me know!! Here is the article 3

Congratulations to Brian Salisbury & Terry Booth, George Vermont winners for 2015 and to Ruth Smith & Judy Paul, Isabel Wallace winners for Also to Noelene and Toni B & Heather & Peter who were the runner ups True story: Canadian woman, June Pattison, was teaching grandson Brandon to play bridge, and she explained point count: ace is 4, king 3, etc. They dealt out the cards and Brandon started counting his points. How many do you have, Pattison asked. Just a minute, Gramma. A few minutes went by and she asked again. Gramma, Brandon said, don t rush me. Finally, Brandon indicated he could open the bidding. How many points do you have? Pattison asked. Fiftyseven, said Brandon. Oops! Gramma forgot to mention that you don t count the 9, 8, 7, 6, etc. Taken from Tuesdays Gold Coast Bridge Congress Bulletin 7
On Sunday March 22 Tony Howes, flew from Sydney just for the day to conduct a Directors Forum at our club. This was for anyone interested in becoming a director, at no cost to them. The Super Congress funded the day. Directors forum Tony covered the most popular calls where a director is called to a table i.e. wrong opening lead out of turn, passing and bidding out of turn, revokes and insufficient bids. He also talked about different movements you can make and how to score. It was a very productive day not only for the directors to be but also for some existing directors who came along just to brush up their skills. We now look forward to seeing some new directors 20 people attended this oneday s Directors Forum held at the club. We now look forward to having some new directors Congratulations to these players who recently scored over 70% in a game Pam Jones & Libby Hedda & Arthur Smith Nigel & Kellie David Shorter & Doug O Meara Thanks to Bill Zimmerman who made these beautiful quiches for lunch 8
Beginner s lessons are underway again and so are the Intermediate lessons. Both are proving to be successful. Thanks to Phil M and Mike Siford for providing these. We welcome 4 new members to our club. ;Myra Hill, Christina Ashcroft, Henry Litton and Linda Siddall. We hope you have many hours of happy bridging with us. On a final note, this is my last newsletter. I have been writing it, four editions a year, for nearly 9 years. I have enjoyed doing it immensely and learnt so much on the way, but the time has come to give it away. Jim and I want to do more travelling and spend more time with family and writing this is time consuming. Just a quick history of how it begun. Tobias, who created our web site, put the first edition on line for me December To be able to free him from this, and with his permission, I decided to do a Web Design course. I did this through Mackseville Tafe, one day a week for a year and for another day a week I did a Digital Scrapbook course for six months. By the end of that time I had obtained the skills to keep our web site updated especially the Members page (Ian sees to the Congress page). To keep up with new technology in 2009, I attended the Tafe in Coffs and for one day a week for 6 months I did Digital Media course. I have tried to move with the times and keep it different and I hope you have enjoyed them. 9
The news is mainly awful. We have just seen another air disaster. The last one made more horrific because it appears to be pilot suicide. Overseas, we saw terrorism in Paris and Belgium. The two Australian boys on death row in Bali seem to be constantly hitting the headlines and we still don t know if the executions will go ahead. What an awful ordeal not just for Andrew and Myuran but for their families as well. However, there has been some good news. For me it was seeing Australia win the World cup in the cricket last Sunday. What a thrill AND THE VERY VERY FINAL WORD Newsletter by Barbara Herring 2015 chbc-publicity-manager@hotmail.com
