1 REGION 60 PUBLICATION TOUCHLINE ESTABLISHED 1975 Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, Player Development VOLUME 32 ISSUE 12 visit us online at ayso60.org DECEMBER 1, 2018 Dear Region 60 Families In the last three weeks, we have seen a surge of Club teams and other local Ricardo Quinones Regional Commissioner programs recruiting in our fields. I believe that marketing and advertising are needed for any organization trying to grow. But I am sure that these groups would not appreciate it if our coaches, board members, or even better, if I personally attended their practices and start lurking around and passing out fliers to their families. Recently, as our playoffs were happening, I was approached by a person that wanted to pass out fliers and asked me if I wanted to have my kid in a more competitive program. I reached out my hand and got the flier. There have been other, less ethical attempts by non-ayso coaches to lure our kids into their programs. Dear Region 60 Families Continued on Page 2 Region 60 Thanks Gold Sponsor: Target Corp. Thanks to the initiatives of Carla Holguin and Tony Baclig, Region 60 will receive two $1,000 grants from Target! The grants are from Target Corporation s Scholarship America program for our regular program and our VIP program. Target s announcement states, Whether it's inspiring young minds, offering unique cultural experiences or meeting your community's most basic needs; we thank you for your continued commitment to making a difference. Miles Standish Tournament Congratulations to our tournament teams! Miles Standish Tournament Director Steve Haegelin reports 16 AYSO Regions throughout the greater Los Angeles were well represented by a total of 84 teams and roughly 1,000 players. Region 60 entered 11 teams. Only the host region, Pasadena (Region 13), and South Pasadena (Region 214) entered more teams. Tournament Continued on Page 2 Region 60 coach Mark Nunez and team won the 14U Boys championsip at Region 13 (Pasadena) Miles Standish Tournament.
2 Estimated probability of competing in college soccer 1 High School Participants Dear Region 60 Families Continued from Page 1 I want to give you my own personal opinion on the subject. As a parent, I can see how easily it is to see our kids as the next Messi, or Ronaldo and to want to be supportive in their development. I know many parents that have kids in a club program who also play or have played with our region. Many times when families are approached, they are sold the idea that by joining a club team, their kids will have an enormous increase in the chances that their kids will end up playing at the college level. I want to share some statistics. NCAA Participants Overall % HS to NCAA The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reports, Professional opportunities are extremely limited and the likelihood of a high school or even college athlete becoming a professional athlete is very low. In contrast, the likelihood of an NCAA athlete earning a college degree is significantly greater; graduation success rates are 86% in Division I, 71% in Division II and 87% in Division III. This year we had a great turnout of players in the Upper Division and I am proud to share with you that many of them tried out and made the local high school teams, they will be part of the 838,573 players competing this season. They are playing at Alhambra, Mark Keppel, % HS to NCAA Division I % HS to NCAA Division II % HS to NCAA Division III Men 450,234 24, % 1.3% 1.5% 2.7% Women 388,339 27, % 2.4% 1.9% 2.8% Estimated probability of competing in men s professional soccer 2 NCAA Participants Approximate # Draft Eligible # Draft Picks # NCAA Drafted % NCAA to Major Pro % NCAA to Total Pro 24,986 5, % -- From the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) 1 Sources: High school figures from the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations; data from club teams not included. College numbers from the NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report. Last Updated: April 20, MLS SuperDraft data from There were 88 draft slots in that year, but only 81 picks, 78 of whom were selected from NCAA schools. Of the 78 NCAA picks, 76 were NCAA Division I student-athletes and two were from Division II. Percentage NCAA to Major Pro calculated using the 78 NCAA selections. (Source: mlssoccer.com). These calculations do not account for other domestic (e.g., USL) or international professional soccer opportunities. Gabrielino, San Gabriel, Don Bosco, San Gabriel Mission, and other local schools. And believe it or not, they play with AYSO and will continue to play with us in the Upper Division next year as we have opened the age maximum for the 19U division. In addition the personal commitment from each individual player to improve their skills during practice, AYSO players qualify for their high schools soccer team because of the hard work and positive influence that every AYSO coach provides. They also benefit from the hard work and sacrifice that everyone supporting the kids makes when we take our kids to very competitive tournaments in the summer. It takes a commitment by the players/ coaches/parents which cannot be overstated. This year we are looking at adding the EXTRA program in our region, which will add another level of competition for those kids that qualify. Manny Olea will lead the effort along with Claudia Garcia, Mark Nunez, Tiffany Rodriguez, Kabul Fuentes, and David Martel to determine when we can begin to offer this program. Thanking you all Ricardo Quinones
