2 It is the very error of the moon. She comes more near the earth than she was wont. And makes men mad. William Shakespeare, Othello ACROSS THE CENTURIES, many a person has uttered the phrase There must be a full moon out there in an attempt to explain weird happenings at night. Indeed, the Roman goddess of the moon bore a name that remains familiar to us today: Luna, prefix of the word lunatic. Greek philosopher Aristotle and Roman historian Pliny the Elder suggested that the brain was the moistest organ in the body and thereby most susceptible to the pernicious influences of the moon, which triggers the tides. Belief in the lunar lunacy effect, or Transylvania effect, as it is sometimes called, persisted in Europe through the Middle Ages, when humans were widely reputed to transmogrify into werewolves or vampires during a full moon. Even today many people think the mystical powers of the full moon induce erratic behaviors. What mystic effect does the moon have on man and the environment?

4 Please help us help you Our band area is not a secure place for your belongings without a little effort on your part. The following are guidelines we are asking all of our members to follow so your property remain yours. Everyone MUST use their locker. All members are issued a locker on their first day with the band. This is your private storage space. Do not share your combo. No one can take your things if you are using your locker properly. LOCK THE LOCK on your locker. Many students do not latch their lock so they do not need to remember the combination. If you have a poor memory or lazy nature, program the combo on your phone or put it in your wallet. You must find a way to make it work. DO NOT BRING VALUABLES to band practice. Your beats or your ipad will be safely waiting for you at home. They are just distractions at practice anyway. If you forget your locker combo, get it from Mrs. Hein. There is a one dollar fee for second reminders of your combo. This is meant to motivate you to remember the combo in the first place. Please DISCOURAGE friends and strangers from hanging around during practices or after school. The band facility is for band members. We do not want anyone but our band family to feel comfortable in our area. This is our home. NEVER PROP DOORS OPEN. An open door looks like an invitation. If a door needs to be unlocked, the directors will take care of it. Do not take it upon yourself to prop a door open. THIS MEANS BEFORE SCHOOL, DURING, OR AFTER. You MAY NOT wait in the band area unsupervised before rehearsal any longer. You must stay in the band room at a study table, practice alone or in an ensemble in a practice room, or be with a director. You MAY NOT roam. Please do not stay if this is an issue for you. Students may not eat lunch in the band area during the school day. Please do not use the band area as a release from another class. You may only be here if a director is aware of it and has given you approval. This is done using a pass.

8 ALL HEALTH FORMS NOW DUE. PHYSICALS DUE BY AUGUST 7. NEW FAMILIES. PLEASE ATTEND Practice Lot Painting Band Council Wednesday - June 8, 12:00noon Band Council Leadership Training July 6-8 9am-4pm Come ready to discover a lot about yourself and the band activity. Show pride in everything that you do!! Band Photographer Needed! If you are an amateur shutterbug, the band needs you! Please contact Dave Cole if you are interested. It is required that every student carries a water jug with them at every rehearsal. This is not optional. Being properly hydrated is key to keeping our members healthy and injury free during the season. The Band Boosters are providing free water jugs. See Ted Moore in the tunnel asap.
9 In order to get the most out of your Band Practice experience, it's important to be prepared. Listed here are some ways to make sure that you stay in tip-top shape during band season. Fluid Intake: WATER, WATER, WATER Drink 16 ounces of water BEFORE you come to rehearsal in the morning. Each evening, after rehearsals, drink 16 to 32 ounces of water. It is essential that you stay hydrated. Guys will sweat and girls will glisten during Band Practice. It's hot on the pavement, sometimes REALLY hot. We are outside, it is band season and this is Indiana! AVOID CAFFEINE or carbonated beverages with caffeine. Also stay away from sugar-loaded drinks (i.e., Kool-Aid or juice). They will dehydrate you. Water is best. Gatorade or other sports drinks are okay, BUT drink them in addition to water. Nutrition: Everyone MUST eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Please eat a healthy meal before you come every day. Contrary to what you may think, food on your stomach will not sit like a lump while you are marching. Your body needs fuel to perform at the level necessary for Athletic Activity. Avoid all caffeine, greasy foods, carbonated drinks with caffeine, excessive candy or sweets, and dairy foods. You are often on your own for lunch. You may bring a sack lunch or make arrangements to obtain lunch offsite. Please be thoughtful as you select your meal choices. Summer Conditions: Wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Bring your sunscreen with you to re-apply during breaks. Wear a hat a baseball cap preferred. Wear light-colored clothing. Always wear socks and tennis shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). Expect high temperatures and humidity. Many hours are spent on the asphalt. Student Pick-up/Drop-off/Parking : The safety of our students is of the utmost importance! Strict rules have been established by the administration at BD. During the school day, all students are to park in the student parking lots, NOT behind the stadium. Parking is always a problem at Ben Davis, and school administrators ask that all students, whether attending band, soccer or football, use the student parking lots. Parents are asked to drive slowly and be careful while dropping off and picking up students before and after rehearsal. Please, never park your car on the curb near the band practice lot or in front of the garage doors near the band room. Even after the band is dismissed, students may be extending their rehearsals with sectionals or other meetings. ALWAYS, use a slow, safe speed in these congested areas. Attendance and Punctuality: To be Early is to be on Time, To be on Time is to be Late In order to maintain a high-quality marching band, attendance from all members is essential. Unlike other classes where a student's success is based upon individual accomplishment, the band's success depends upon complete member participation. Please notify the band office ahead of time of practice absences. All performances and practices are mandatory. Our rehearsals are based on a designed sequence. One activity builds on another. If you are late, you miss information and practice that will not be replaced. Please be on time. Take to your section leader if you need help finding a ride. Visitors: And, finally... Rehearsals are closed to non-band students. Visitors are asked to stay off the practice lot and away from the practice facilities until breaks or before and after practice. Band practice is a time when our members must be allowed to work without distraction. Alumni and guests are always welcome but not in a way that hinders our quality of rehearsal. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to come and watch practices. Feel free to bring a lawn chair or sit in the stadium benches. Students from other schools are not permitted to travel with us or participate in our events without specific clearance by Mr. Cole. Note to Parents: If your son or daughter is enrolled in the Marching Band it is very important to understand that this means we think you are going to do this activity until the season has completed. Many resources of time/energy and money have been put into place to help ensure a positive and memorable experience for each student. If a student changes their mind in mid stream and decides not to follow through, it changes many components significantly: Uniforms / equipment / staff and most importantly the show. When we change the show because a student has changed their mind, drains resources and affects every other student in the program. So if your son or daughter is considering dropping, please think about following through with the commitment.
