1 EXPRESS October 2009 VOL. 29, NO 1 PRESIDENT'S REPORT The good news is by the time you get this newsletter, the pool should be in operation again, barring anymore unforeseen problems cropping up. There shouldn't be, we are past the "destruction" stage and well into the construction phase. The shower-dressing rooms rehabs are also into their finishing phases and we are in the final stages of finishing the lowering of the manhole covers. The propane station was taken out of service a month earlier than we had planned because of problems developing with the refueling equipment. If you have purchased a tag for propane, stop by the office and we will refund your money. We are now in the final stages of getting our permit to operate a waste disposal facility. We had to make some changes and modifications to qualify for a renewal permit. We are looking at doing some minor roadwork in the near future, repairing some of the worst spots. The fiscal year has ended and the new assessment charges and budget start in effect. One of the changes that you will notice is that we are on a coupon booklet style of payment. We also have the automatic deduction from your bank account in effect if you so choose. Since I'm on that subject, all payments will be mailed to the management company. The SLOA front office will not be accepting any maintenance payments. Since the new budget is in operation, that means the Board has to start putting the budget together. To end on a happy note, WE FINISHED THIS LAST YEAR UNDER BUDGET FOR THE 2ND YEAR IN A ROW. Bob DeBott, President 38 Queen of Waters STORAGE RENTALS All storage rentals are due October 1, and must be paid no later than October 31. Storage Lots Shed Lots Boat Slips These are all due October 1., and are to be paid at the office at Saddlebag Lake. Please do not include the storage rental in with your assessments. BLOOD MOBILE The blood mobile will be here Friday, October 16, from 8 a.m. to noon. Blood Banks of Mid-Florida will have their bus outside the street side of the Clubhouse. You need to first come into the Clubhouse to do some paperwork before getting on the bus. If you are a newcomer in the Resort or have donated before consider donating a unit of blood. It will be most appreciated. It's painless and only takes about 20 minutes of your time. Appointments can be made with Greta Dain. Greta and Dick Dain 20 Grey Fox Lane or

"Excuse me," he said to a casino employee. "How does this work?" The worker showed him how to insert a bill, hit the spin button and operate the release handle. "And where does the money come out?" asked Clem. "Usually at the ATM." replied the casino employee. WOMAN'S CLUB Where did the summer go? October is here and hopefully some cool weather. Hope all of you had a wonderful summer! We are ready to see everyone return to have Tun in the sun at Saddlebag!" We have lots of plans for the women in the Resort that participate with the Woman's Club. It is a time to have fun, meet new friends and enjoy the social gatherings with other ladies and to welcome new residents to join in our social organization. Dues are $5 per year and they start collecting them at our first meeting in November. Our dues plus the money raised from our yearly events, such as: the Christmas Bazaar, Craft Fair and Granny's Attic Sale, help us to finance our many services to the Resort. We are open for any suggestions for new fundraisers. Please contact any member of the Woman's Club board with any ideas. Please mark these dates on your calendar as a reminder of the good times to come: 11/6/09 Luncheon/Meeting SHADES OF AUTUMN. 11/27/09 9:00 A.M. Decorate Club house for Christmas. 12/05/09 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR 12/11/09 Luncheon/Meeting CHRISTMAS 12/25/09 Christmas potluck 1/08/10 Luncheon/Meeting HOLLYWOOD 1 /22/10 GRANNY'S ATTIC 2/5/10 Luncheon/Meeting WESTERN 2/26/10 CRAFT FAIR 3/5/10 FASHION SHOW 4/2/10 Luncheon/Meeting RAINBOW Also, in December we are planning a Christmas Tour of Homes, (date pending). We're hoping this will be an evening affair so we can all see how clever and beautifully decorated some of the homes are here in Saddlebag. Diane Clementson will be chairing this event. Contact Diane if you would like to have your home on the tour. Don't forget our annual Woman of the Year 2

3 Award! Submit 3 or more paragraphs explaining why that person deserves to be Woman of the Year and sign it. Please put your submissions in the suggestion box. Volunteering to help with any of our fundraisers, theme luncheons or other endeavors will be greatly appreciated. Please plan on joining us this year! We look forward to another great year of fun, friendship and volunteering to make Saddlebag a great place to live. Officers for 2009/10: President Nancy Balch VP Jaye Wright Sec. FayeWirth Treas. That's the day of the Woman's Club Christmas Bazaar. A lunch for $5 will be prepared and served by the "Mad Hatters", a red hat ladies group here at SLR. The menu will be printed in the November Express. We are going back to having raffles!! (4 in fact.) Four of our club members are making up baskets pertaining to: Gardening Marlene Kopp Get Pampered Shirley Hertzog Golf Bonnie Reynolds Kitchen Ann Purdy We are hoping for donations to these baskets and items will be tagged as to donors. The Silent Auction was popular last year, so we will do it again. Donations are appreciated. Our champion ticket seller, Sally Hamilton ( ) is in charge. The Christmas cookies and sweets booth was a big money maker last year, thanks to Madeline Conway and all the members who brought homemade goodies. We hope you will support this booth again. Another popular booth is the second hand Christmas booth. We are now accepting items. Contact Terry Mounce, 59 Woodruff Way or Judy Luko or take to Granny's Attic and mark "Christmas". We will again have "New and Nearly New". Shirley Hertzog ( ) and Barbara Marksbury ( ) are collecting items for that. The craft ladies make and sell lovely items and donate all the money to the Woman's Club. If you would like to donate one or more of your own craft items to their booth, it would be greatly appreciated. Sammie Siegfried has donated all her beautiful handmade jewelry, to be sold at half price, to the Woman's Club and Lea Vandenberk will be in charge of sales. We thank Sammie for being such a supportive participant of the past bazaars. If you would like to have a table to sell your own craft items, contact Judy Luko. Whole tables will be $10 each, 1/2 table $5. You or your spouse must be a member of the Woman's Club to participate. Help us make this bazaar a big success so we can continue to do good things for the Resort. Dues are only $5 per year. Last April we voted to donate $6,000 to help update the lighting systems in the Clubhouse and surrounding buildings. We also gave $4,000 to make the ladies locker room in the screen room more handicap accessible and to spruce it up a bit. Wait until you see the results!! You will be both surprised and delighted. They have done more than we ever expected. Judy Luko, Co-chair 57 Saddlebag Trail Marilyn Storm, Co-chair 29 Blue Quill LINE DANCING TO BEGIN. Don't forget Monday, October 26, is "D" day, dancing day. Beginners will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1, with regular line dancing until 2. We have all gotten a little rusty over the summer but it won't be long until it all comes back. Dancing is great exercise and can be a lot of fun, so give it a try. Joan Hannon 24 Silver Doctor

4 SADDLEBAG BEAUTIFICATION/ GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club has been quite busy with new projects for the period of November 2008 through May Some of the large projects were: 1. Planting of oak and holly trees at the beach area. 2. Planting of palm trees in the new palm garden at the back of the Resort and along the trail at the Memorial Gardens. 3. Removing the old bushes, preparing for the installation of new Kwik Kerbing, leveling, laying ground cover and shoveling and raking of stone in all of these individual areas, plus the raking, weeding, spraying and watering of the individual garden areas in the rest of the Resort. Future plans for the club will be additional Kwik Kerb and stone around the rose bushes and palm trees in the Memorial Gardens. This will in turn reduce the hours the club spends in weeding and spraying of weeds and replacing the mulch two times per year. This, of course, will be made possible only if donations continue to be given to the club. We will also be planting more trees in the Resort, as we have money left in the "Tree Fund". This will be done in the fall and winter months after we receive Board approval for the locations. The following gifts were received by the Garden Club from March 17 through August 29, In Memory of: Given by: John Glavey M/M Dave Wiechart, M/M Lynn Viele, M/M David Canankamp, M/M Barry Montgomery, M/M Al Luchenbill, M/M Arnie Stebbins, M/M Harry Benecke, M/M Dick Clemens, M/M Jim Kopp Bill Teetsel M/M Bob Tromley, M/M Jim Kopp Betty Brunty Coterie Club Howard Keach M/M Al Luchenbill M/M Jim Kopp Wes Schafer Wilford Watkins Mary Jane Schafer....Wilford Watkins John Lynch M/M Bob Tromley Sandy Lynch CowgiH..M/M Bob Tromley Mariorie Feldbauer...M/M Jim Kopp Joe Broich Erla Broich The following gave monetary donations: M/M Frank Todosciuk, Marjorie Peacock, Elinor Roeschen, M/M Clyde Wright, M/M Allen Ross, M/M Don Johnston, M/M Don Lingan, M/M Skip Feldbauer, M/M Barry Woods, M/M David Rankin, Mother's Day Committee. A donation was given by M/M Jim Kopp, as a retirement gift for Barry Woods in honor of his 23 years of service to the Air Force. Barry and his wife, Beth Ann, have a home on Night Owl Circle. A gift of palm trees and plants from M/M Barry Parker and M/M John Voorheis, were given as prizes at the Garden Club Dance. A gift of a palm tree to be planted this November in the new Palm Garden at the back of the Resort was given in memory of John Glavey by M/M Tom Stout. Thanks also to the Saddlebag Social Dance Committee for sponsoring a dance with all the proceeds going to the Garden Club. The club received a grand total of $1,073 (this amount was the Dance Club donation from the tickets sold, plus the 50/50 drawings held by the Garden Club). The dance was a complete success and the entertainment was excellent. Thank you to all that attended and participated in the 50/50 drawings. I also want to publically thank John Crummey and his entire crew for all their help. We could not have done all that was accomplished without their help. Another thank you goes to all the members of the Garden Club, summer volunteers and residents who gave so much of their time and "muscle" in the Memorial Gardens and all other areas of the Resort. The next thank you goes to all residents who delivered their flowers to the Beach area for the Sunrise Easter Service on April 12. It was a beautiful service and your flowers made it more beautiful. Saddlebag is a great community. All we have to do is ask for volunteers, flowers, gifts and donations and they just appear like magic. Not much more I can say except THANK YOU!!!!!! The Garden Club. So, if there is anyone out there that can show us how to do it, please step forward. Later on in the winter we will try to schedule someone to do Ebay. More information will follow in the coming months. We are looking forward to seeing everyone back at Saddlebag. So, have a good trip. 8 SADDLEBAG COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) The Saddlebag CERT continued training through the summer. Several team members worked at the Polk County Hurricane Expo in June. Denise Heady, from the Polk County Health Department gave a presentation at our June meeting: "Are You Ready to Shelter at Home?" As we come to the end of our summer patrols, I would like to thank all of the volunteers who have given so many hours to the program. A special thanks to Agnes Swatzell, scheduler, Karen Park, secretary, Tony Menichino, maintenance and Joan Hannon, my assistant. If anyone would like to join the C.A.P. program, we are taking applications for next season. On behalf of the Sheriff's Dept., Saddlebag and coordinators, a big THANKS. If you would like to help out, donations of yam (dark 4 ply worsted weight yam, NOT WOOL) would be much appreciated. These need not be full skeins. I will be back in SLR by mid November and would collect yam after that. I have had good luck at garage/yard sales finding part skeins in case you are a "rummager" like I am. If you would like to help out by knitting a few caps, please me and I will send you the pattern which is really easy. Thanks much for your help!!! Dennie Pahl 82 Silversides denniepahl@yahoo.com Amazing simple home remedies: If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. THANK YCIJS THANK YOU! The numerous cards we received from the Saddlebag Community was overwhelming. We wish everyone the very best and all our blessings. Gil and Midge Schleweis I would like to thank all who sent cards during my recent surgery. Receiving cards from friends is somewhat expected. Receiving cards from acquaintances is a special treat. But receiving cards from Saddlebag is a truly unique experience. Four times I call to Lois and said, "Honey, who ARE these people?" She'd say, "They live in Saddlebag, they're neighbors." Complete strangers, but neighbors. Thank you all again. Bob Lapsley

9 I A4CCE THANK Many, many thanks for the visits, calls, cards and delicious food from you wonderful friends and neighbors, when I was hospitalized in June. Special thanks to Marilyn Storm and Nancy Lambert for their 6 hour vigil in the ER. I just love you all! Madeline Conway I want to express my thanks for the gifts, flowers, cards and calls. They meant so much to me and our family. Saddlebag is sure something special. Bob Exler Words are inadequate to express how I feel about the love and care extended to me by so many of you after the devastating loss of my husband, so I'll just say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Janet McKnight I want to thank everyone for the cards and phone calls during my illness. Elaine Teetsell WHAT DO RETIRED PEOPLE DO ALL DAY? Working people frequently ask retired people what the do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day Marilyn and I went into town and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a policeman writing out a parking ticket. We went up to hem and said, "Come on, how about giving a senior citizen a break?" He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a not too nice name. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires. So Marilyn called him a jerk. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus. We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age!
