1 ELIGIBILITY: One-day contests are open to amateurs only, unless otherwise stated. Home & Hobby contests are open to individuals 18 years of age and older, unless otherwise stated. HOW: No pre-registration required. Bring your prepared item and the typed or printed recipe form found online at We will no longer accept other types of recipe forms. No exceptions! Deliver entries between opening time of the Fair and 12:45pm on the day of the specified contest to Home & Hobby exhibit located on the 2 nd floor, west end of the Grandstand. Judging starts at 1:00pm and once the judging process starts, no late entries will be accepted. Your entry and entry contest form will admit you into the Fair for FREE. Exhibitors must personally deliver their entries. PROCESSING FEE: None. LIMIT OF ENTRIES: One entry per class, unless otherwise stated. AWARDS: Ribbons will be awarded for First - Fifth place in each class (unless otherwise stated). Sweepstakes and Donated Awards may be offered in some contests. RECIPES: A recipe may be entered in only one contest. Submit recipe with each entry at the time of delivery. Recipes must be typed or printed legibly only on the Home & Hobby Recipe form. Incomplete or illegible recipe forms will count against you at judging. All recipes become the property of the San Diego County Fair. Recipes need not be original. What else do I need to know? It is advisable to provide a cooler for foods during transportation. Judges will be encouraged to disallow foods which have not been adequately protected. Physical damage, which may occur during transit or handling, will not be counted against the contestant. Garnishes are permitted. Items will be returned on the day of the contest unless otherwise specified. 3 San Diego Cake Club Chocolate Contest Friday, June 7 Who: This contest is open to amateur and professional bakers and decorators. Limit: One entry per class. What: Entrants must bake and decorate with chocolate to create a unique, individual-sized dessert. Use of chocolate throughout the dessert, i.e. 3" chocolate cake filled with chocolate filling and uniquely decorated with chocolate elements (this is an example only). Use of chocolate in all forms is encouraged, and the use of chocolate fondant is permitted. Recipe: Must submit completed recipe form found on the Home & Hobby One-Day Contest page at Recipes must be original, unpublished, named, and the sole property of the entrant, and not previously submitted to any other contests. Quilt of Valor Block Contest Friday, June 14 Limit: One entry per class. What: Sew a quilt block with red, white and blue fabrics. Block must measure exactly 12½ X 12½, with an unfinished edge. Each entry will become the property of the San Diego County Fair and will be donated to the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to cover all war wounded and injured service members and veterans from the War on Terror with a wartime quilt, named a Quilt of Valor. Judging Criteria: Correct Size, Uniqueness/Creativity and Workmanship. 1 Red, white & blue quilt block, machine- or hand-pieced 2 Red, white & blue quilt block, using appliqué technique Awards: The first-place winner in each class will receive a $25 Award. 4 Salsa/Guacamole Contest Saturday, June 15 Who: This contest is open to all ages. Limit: One entry per exhibitor. What: Create your best homemade salsa or guacamole and bring it to the Fair. Entries must be brought in an unpacked (uncanned) jar/bottle (no chips necessary). Where: Bring your Salsa/Guacamole to the Home Sweet Home Stage located in the Garden Show area between 11:00am and 1:45pm. Recipe: Submit completed recipe with each entry at the time of delivery. Recipes must be typed or printed legibly only on the Creative Youth Recipe form located at Use of a cooler is permitted to transport items that need refrigeration. Recipes must clearly list ALL ingredients with measurements, preparation instructions, cooking times, and number of servings. Judging Criteria: Creativity, Taste, Presentation, and Aroma. 1 Individual, Adult 2 Family Awards: Ribbons will be awarded, as merit. Limit: One entry per exhibitor. OzSome Upcycled Apron Contest Wednesday, June 18 What: Let's show Mother Earth how much we care by upcycling an apron to show off or wear! All mediums accepted. Please include a photo of the "before" apron with your entry if using a pre-made apron. Open to all techniques and mediums. Let your imagination soar. 5 Kombucha Brewing Contest Friday, June 21 Who: This contest is open to amateur kombucha brewers. Professional brewers or those who earn an income from kombucha may not enter the contest. Limit: One entry per exhibitor. Must be 21 or older. What: One liter of your favorite homemade kombucha recipe. Recipe: Must submit completed recipe form found on the Home & Hobby One-Day Contest page at Recipes must be original, unpublished, named, and the sole property of the entrant, and not previously submitted to any other contests. Recipes must clearly list ALL ingredients with measurements, preparation instructions, cooking times, and number of servings. All recipes become property of the San Diego County Fair. Yarn Blocks Contest Friday, June 28 What: Using a 4-ply knitting worsted yarn, make a block 12" X 12" (must be exact) in combination of light blue, white, and/or light pink. The blocks will be donated to Stitches of the Heart Project. Judging Criteria: Originality (40%), Workmanship (30%), Use of Materials (30%). 1 Hand Knit 2 Machine Knit 3 Crochet Awards: The first-place winner in each class will receive a $25 Award. Family Crest Contest Saturday, June 29 Who: This contest is open to all ages. Limit: One entry per Exhibitor What: Create a Family Crest and bring it to the Fair. Family Crest s must represent your family and be no larger than 18in x 24in. You may recreate your family crest if you already have one or start from scratch. You can use all types of materials and be sure to use your creativity. Where: Meet at the Home Sweet Home Stage located in the Garden Show area between 11:00am and 1:45pm.
