1 Burnham Park Yacht Club Monthly Newsletter June 2015 Commodore s Log For the start of the season we kicked it off with the Kentucky Derby Race. Chris Edmonds and Keith Moore created the horses out of wood and paint. Squares were made on the patio and with the roll of a couple of dice each person carried their horse to the finish line. Joann Murphy was dressed for the occasion, even had a whip, she took charge in rolling the die. Joann s wonderful participation inspires all of us. The ladies were beautifully dressed with their Kentucky Derby bonnets. Had a lot of fun!! Mother s Day Brunch went exceptionally well. The club had reservations for 75 people. Open house had a great turn out. New members were signed up. Thanks to all the members that came and helped make May open house a success. There is one more open house on Saturday June 20 th please make an effort to meet possible new members and let them know how great this club is to all of us. May 15 th was the official club open season, tender service is now available. Paulette Horne and Dick O Connell waxed the tender boat. Chris Edmonds hung signage on the sides of the tender for the Kick off Summer Party on Saturday, May 23 rd. Paulette has been doing a fantastic job on planting flowers and cutting shrubs. The grounds of the club are coming alive just in time for open season. Dick O Connell and Bill Hood have been putting the canvas on the patio. Gigi has taken charge of setting up the mast stepping and as of now there have been 12. Gigi has also done an outstanding job at creating a summer menu. Make reservations so you can enjoy the food, drink and get to know other members of the club. Steve Theis and Phil Edwards had been working on the purchase of a new dishwasher. We are very grateful to Charlie Martin s son in law, Adam, who installed the dishwasher. Charlie, you have a wonderful son. The system on the club computer has been fixed. New cards will be printed for access into the club and should take place in about two weeks. Steve Theis has agreed to head our Power Squadron Committee. He will oversee the Fleet Review which is coming up on Saturday, June 13 th. We all hope for a beautiful day so we can have a lot of boats participating in the parade as well as the party. The Women s Auxiliary is working on the installation of new blinds in the chart room. We appreciate your generosity in making the club more beautiful. New patio furniture was donated on behalf of The Good Ole Boys Plus One Soooo comfortable. I can never say it enough: thank you to the Board of Directors for all their hard work and dedication within their committees for the betterment of Burnham Park Yacht Club. Janet McCarthy Commodore 1600 South Linn White Drive Chicago IL
2 P a g e 2 Vice Commodore The boating season has arrived and BPYC is now open full-time. I am very excited, my wallet and liver may not be so thrilled. However, we all have our crosses (or anchors) to bear. I m kidding of course. We are in the process of posting fliers on the gates for the Open Houses as well as other upcoming events. As always, talk to your neighbors on their dock to join. We are a diamond in the rough that not everyone knows about. I can t remember the Club and grounds looking so good. The landscaping looks terrific. New canvas panels are on their way for the deck awning and some new patio furniture has mysteriously settled on the south end of the patio. Check it out! The Bar and Galley are going to have weekly drink and food specials too! DOCKS and GROUNDS: Chairman Paulette Horne has been extraordinary! The flower pots and landscaping looks perfect. Paulette has been diligent on getting the tender boat ready, launched and brought to the harbor. You re hard to keep up with Paulette. Everyone should compliment her on a job well done. The committees under Vice Commodore have been very active getting ready for the Club being open full time. HOUSE: Phil Edwards, Chairman and Steve Theis have done a great deal in getting the new dishwasher installed. (Special thanks to Past Commodore Charles Martin s son-in-law who installed it at no charge.) They have also scheduled several other smaller plumbing tasks to be completed. The kitchen is really in great shape for the upcoming season. Thanks guys! MARKETING and MEMBERSHIP: Howard Jacobson, Chairman has been gearing up for the next two Open Houses (5/17/15 and 6/20/15). He has already signed up a number of new members. The first open house held in April was a great success with eight new members signing up! Keith Moore is a superstar. He signed up four, two as life members. The challenge has been made. Can anyone beat him? Let s all show him how it s done. Our manager GiGi has signed up a number also! Just in...at our second Open House, six (6) more new members have joined. Well done! PARK RELATIONS: Chairman Scott Gordon has been gracious enough to undertake the task of Chairman of the Bar and Galley committee, and he has been doing a great job of addressing the two toughest issues: good food and timely service. As a result, if anyone would be willing to volunteer to chair his prior assignment, the Park Relations Committee, it would be very helpful. REGATTA and SAIL FLEET: Chairman Bill Van Emburg has finalized negotiations with Columbia Yacht Club regarding the Wednesday Sailboat Races. Thank goodness! Help was given also by Don Waller and Dick O Connell. Thank you everyone. Well like Bugs Bunny says, th-th-th-that's all folks. Sincerely, Chris Edmonds Vice Commodore Rear Commodore Boats are filling the harbor. Now if we could get the temperatures to go with the date that would be awesome! The committees have been hard at work: Bar and Galley: Gigi, our chef and committee members have been hard at work coming up with new menu items for the bar, patio and weekend breakfast. Copies of our new menus are included in the newsletter. Keep watching for weekend specials, they are sure to please. Docks and Grounds: Has done a fantastic job with the all the plantings, shrub trimming and getting the tender ready for service. Power Fleet: Has made the contacts for our fleet review and the rendezvous is set in Hammond for the end of July. I would also like to thank Steve Theis and Charlie Martin s son-inlaw for getting our dishwasher installed just in time for the start of the season. Steve also corrected several other plumbing issues around the bar. It takes a lot to get the club ready for the season, please take a moment and thank the Board of Directors, committee chairs, committee members and volunteers that put in countless hours to make sure we have an enjoyable place to call home. Programs and Publicity: They have done an excellent job in planning and communicating our many events for the summer and fall. It is sure to be a busy summer. Make sure to watch The Breeze and monthly calendar. Keith Moore Rear Commodore
3 P a g e 3 Programs May And they re off... What an exciting Kentucky Derby race all two minutes! And the big question is, will American Pharoah make history at the upcoming Belmont Stakes on June 6 th? But before the big race, we had some races of our own at the BPYC Race Track on the patio thanks to the craftsmanship of Chris Edmonds who made six amazing race horses. Joanne Murphy conducted the dice rolling to move the horses along, and she was decked out in her best Jockey Silks. It was a beautiful day - ladies wore hats, the men wore derby attire, we sipped on mint juleps and enjoyed derby themed foods. New members, Tom and Carol, joined right in, and we are happy to welcome them to the club. It was a fun time! We hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend and enjoyed the Scramble Band. They may have been around for a while, but they still have it! Lots of fun and dancing. To finish up May, musician Danny Moore will be playing in the bar area on Saturday, May 30 th starting at 7:30. June Chicago Blues Fest weekend runs the 12 th 14 th, and we are happy to bring back Blues Diva Sharon Lewis on Saturday, June 13 th at 7:00. This will follow the Fleet Review. Details are attached. There will be a Father s Day BBQ on Sunday, June 21 st starting at 1:00 so give Dad a break from grilling and also enjoy the music of Johnny V starting at 2:00. Rsvp. The Women s Auxiliary is holding a Self Defense class on Thursday, June 25 th at 6:00. Details are attached. On Saturday, June 27 th there will be Painting Party at 7:00 on the patio, taught by artist Janet Long of Naperville. We will be painting the BPYC Million Dollar View and sipping on cocktails as we create our masterpieces. This will be a lot of fun for both the ladies and the gentlemen. We do need reservations so we know how many supplies are needed. See the attached flier for details. Danielle Detten Women s Auxiliary Welcome back to your Harbor Home for the 2016 Season! The Auxiliary has been busy measuring and getting bids for the new blinds and curtains in the Chart Room. Deb Roeser has been researching the best nautical look for our Yacht Club. We will come up with a very bright design. We hope to have this project completed in the next month. Thank you to Linda Sparks for exploring herbs to plant in our patio area. We now have the fresh scents and edible use of herbs for our club meals. If you find you'd like a sampling, take a snippet and enjoy compliments of the Auxiliary. Please join us Sunday, June 7th at 1pm on the patio for our seminar "KNOW YOUR IMPELLER". Our guest speaker and club member, John Staniszewski, is a certified master mechanic with over 20yrs experience in the Marine Industry. He will speak from 1-1:30 pm and then follow with a Q&A. Come prepared with all your mechanical an impeller questions. You don't want to miss our Thursday, June 25th instructional seminar "Self Defense for All Ages." You don't have to be strong and brave to defend yourself. Our guest instructor, Jeff, is a master martial arts instructor. Join us to learn how to heighten your awareness, confidence and physical defense techniques to keep you safe. The cost is $25/per person and includes appetizers, beer and wine. We open at 6:00 pm in the bar and the instruction begins at 6:30 pm on the Patio (inclement weather in the Dining Room). Please reserve your spot with an to GM@BPYC.com or call Of course, to learn more about the Auxiliary and our mission, join us for the monthly meeting on the first Thursday (in season) of the month starting on June 4th. Look for our flier information on your gate and in the Club. Let s get this season started! Bonnie Riordan Auxiliary President Bar & Galley The Bar and Galley committee are working with Gigi to revamp the menu and improve the service. Cost savings and lower priced menu alternatives are under consideration. We assure you, quality will not be sacrificed. Be sure to take advantage of our soon to be implemented Happy Hour with discounted drinks and appetizers. Thank you Paulette Horne, Howard Jacobson, and Jim Gentile for your on-going support and assistance. Looking forward to seeing you soon, and Happy Boating! Scott Gordon Chairman Bar and Galley Committee
4 P a g e 4 Beer Can Races Burnham Park Yacht Club will again sponsor our Wednesday Night Beer Can Regatta. The Beer Can Regatta is an informal racing series for sailors to have a good time with their boat, family and crew. Any BPYC member with a sailboat is invited to participate. The racing is casual, and it's designed to make racing accessible to those new to the sport. If you are new to the program and would like to discuss the details, we would be pleased to get together with you and answer your questions. Starts are designed to be as easy as possible. Radio check-in will not be required and the committee boat will make periodic courtesy radio announcements, including course, start times and any course changes. The races start between 6:40pm and 7:10pm (depending on your section) and are over by 9:00pm. Most skippers and crew come to the Club after the race for special pricing on drinks and a simple buffet meal. Cash is accepted. We announce the night s results and present the awards as soon as possible after the race. The food, drinks, awards and enthusiastic sailors result in lots of great conversation and fun. Just give us a call or our Sail Fleet Director, Bill Van Emburg (bill@quadrix.com). We can also help arrange for you to go out on other racers' boats, if you want to get a feel for it before getting started Beer Can applications are available at the Club. Please be sure to turn in your application at least two days before your first race, as there is some processing that needs to be done and you will not be scored if we have not had the opportunity to register you. The 2015 Beer Can racing season will begin on Wednesday, May 27. The 14 race series runs May 27 through September 2. There will be a "tune-up" (practice) race on May 20 and no racing on July 8 or July 15. Members from Burnham Park Yacht Club, MORF and Columbia Yacht Club all participate in the series. There are two "jib and main" sections, a T-10 section, and three spinnaker sections. We anticipate around boats in each section s start, which should make for fun racing. The registration fee is $100. Contact Bill Van Emburg (bill@quadrix.com), Sail Fleet Director, with any questions or to discuss how to participate in BPYC's 2015 Wednesday Night Beer Can Racing! We look forward to seeing you at the starting line! Bill Van Emburg Docks & Grounds Welcome Back!! We plan on continuing to improve the curb appeal throughout the season. I always welcome thoughts and ideas. If any of you have high school kids looking for volunteer time please send them our way. Everyone is welcome to plant and pull weeds any time you feel the need around the club. Please just send me an to phorne@soundinc.com if you are planting in case we already had plans for an area. I would like to thank Dick O Connell and John Staniszewski for helping get the tender boat ready for launch last. Thank you Phil Edwards from Twin Oaks Landscaping for providing mulch to the club. Thank you to the Women s Auxiliary for donating $ for the plants around the Club. Paulette Horne Docks & Grounds
