1 Christmas Greetings From

2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy Tall Ships Challenge Gulf Coast arrives in Pensacola in April Starting on April 12 th thru 16 th, 2018 the Tall Ship Challenge series including a series of races and port festivals held every year to honor America s long maritime history. The Tall Ships Challenge normally takes place on the Great Lakes, Atlantic and Pacific coasts but will take place for the first time along the Gulf Coast. The fleet has not been to Pensacola before so this is a whole new festival for the city and ships to get excited about. There will be six to seven tall ships which you will be able to take day tours of, and nighttime and VIP events will also be held on board the vessels. The flagship of this fleet is the 260 ft tall Elissa first launched in The Tall Ships Challenge Gulf Coast will be held at the Port of Pensacola. DECEMBER 2017 Commodore s Comments BOB SUTTON From the Helm: As I reflect on the year I had as the Commodore of The Navy Yacht Club Pensacola I feel good. I think we, as a club, have had a lot of good things happen this year. The two big promises that I made at the beginning of the year have come a long way. First the Access to the Base has seen a great deal of improvement and should continue into next year. This will help to increase membership. The second promise Disabled Access to the Crow s Nest is a work in progress. We have gone as far as talking to a Senators aide. This one will take some time and I know that the Commodore and Vice will work hard to see it through. I feel that we were on target for completing the Objectives of the Club. In February the new updated website was put into use. We started the Regatta season in March that got things rolling for the year. Next we started working on the Navy Cup Brochure. As we came into May the Boy Scouts came to town and what a great two days that was. It was also great working with the Marina staff and I believe bettering the relationship between us. The next big item was the 55 th Navy Cup at which we had the C.O. of the base for the first time in a long time recognize us as a Club and give out the awards. At the same time we started seeing more racing crews come over for the post Regatta parties this in part due to the ability to get on the Base. By the end of the race year we had completed all of the racing as a qualified and professional team. There are so many more things that happened this year and I could go on for pages thanking all the volunteers but this is my last Foghorn and I want to close it out. What I do want to do is thank the membership for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Commodore of the Navy Yacht Club and to thank the Bridge for all the hard work they did for the Club and me this past Year. There is one more person that I need to thank and that is my wife. Without her help and backing I would have never made it through the year, she gives me the strength to do anything. In closing out the year I want to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton 2017 Commodore

Sometimes life gives us unexpected honors. As a few of you know I spend some of my spare time volunteering to sit with patients at the end of their life. Last night I received a call from Emerald Coast Hospice needing me to sit with a patient over one hundred years old who was dying and that he was military. We had a dinner engagement that evening with three other couples so I asked my wife if she would mind staying home so I could take this appointment. Of course, you need to go was her reply. When I arrived I was shocked. I was sitting with an American military hero. He was a Delta Force Operator, spent 25 years as a combat leader, and was a former lead advisor for special operations to the Director of the CIA. He had many other points listed in his resume. Jim Reese, Army Air Corps is best known for being the last known survivor of the famous Flying Tigers that fought in World War II. What an honor it was for me to be reading Scriptures to him and praying with him for several hours just prior to his passing. I hope you are all ready for another Commodore s Ball and Christmas Party. So far we have over fifty friends and members RSVP d and paid. Some of you need to get in your reservation before it is too late. We have the band really amped up and ready to go. We have the same location at the Pensacola Yacht Club and the same great menu. We expect the same grand time with great food, great music, and wonderful fellowship with friends. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner at our November Meeting thanks to a tremendous amount of work and efforts by Sandy Pyle. She had a lot of help from other members but the bulk of the work was on her. Everything went smoothly and tasted great. Our January meeting will involve a Southern New Year medley of foods. Please make every effort to attend as we will be kicking off the New Year with a new Bridge. One major accomplishment this year has been the securing six month passes for many members who were having difficulties getting on base for meetings or regattas. Please, if you are desiring to have one of these passes and you are a member of the Navy Yacht Club Pensacola please let us know. We have individuals who can assist you in obtaining these. We can t help if you don t let us know. Bill Clark Vice Commodore (850)

9 Helldiver Phoenix Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue in if so, there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc. Coquina Lockeness 2017 Pensacola Bay Championship Series Feb 11 Valentine Regatta PBYC (Bay Champ #1) Mar 4 Maxine #1/CC#1 NYCP (Bay Champ #2) Mar 11 Maxine #2 /Rite of Spring PBYC (Bay Champ #3) Mar 18 Maxine #3 PYC (Bay Champ #4) Apr 8 CC#2 NYCP (Bay Champ #5) Apr 29 Cancer Society Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #6) postponed to May 20th May 13 Sea Buoy PBYC (Bay Champ #7) May 20 Cancer Society Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #6) Abandoned and set to be rescheduled to Aug 5th Jun Gulf port-pensacola GYC/PYC (Bay Champ #8) Aug 5 Cancer Society Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #6) Sep 2 Pcola Bch Pier and Back PBYC (Bay Champ #9) - cancelled Sep 23 CC #3 NYCP (Bay Champ #10) Oct 7 Lost Bay PtYC (Bay Champ #11) rescheduled to October 28th Oct WFORC PYC (Bay Champ #12) Not Pictured Reach Around Yniestra December 13th

Now, on Feb. 16, 1945, U.S. Naval carrier aircraft were set to roar off flight decks and for the first time attack the Japanese Home Islands, the only previous carrier raid on Japan having been that of the Doolittle Raiders in April Pensacola Fun Fact! In the first years of operations at Pensacola Naval Air Station, pioneer Naval aviators were constantly pressing against the boundaries of flight, notable among them Lt. Richard C. Saufley. In December 1915 he set an American altitude record by reaching 11,975 feet, pushing that record to 16,072 feet by April of the following year. On June 9, 1916, he attempted an endurance record, spending eight hours and 51 minutes airborne before a fatal crash ended his life More Fun Facts! When the engineers designing the ship that became the aircraft carrier Lexington (CV 2) outfitted her with turboelectric drive power plants, they did so for performance at sea. Little did they envision that the ship s engines would be called into action to power Tacoma, Wash., when that city s hydroelectric power system failed due to drought conditions. Between Dec. 17, 1929, and Jan. 16, 1930, the flattop provided more than 4.2 million kilowatt hours to the city. On Dec. 1, 1947, the Marine Corps established its first helicopter squadron, HMX-1, which was tasked with developing the tactics for the use of rotary-wing aircraft to support an amphibious assault. Ten years later, HMX-1 assumed an additional mission it retains to this day, the squadron s helicopters serving as Marine One when transporting the president of the United States.
