Last season at this time, the question on everyone s mind was How do you replace Kevin Durant, the consensus National Player of the Year? Rick Barnes and the UT coaching staff had an easy answer. You don t. So Texas returned four of its five starters, won a school-record 31 games, claimed the Big 12 Conference title and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. This summer, there s a new question. How do you replace D.J. Augustin, a consensus first-team All-American and the Bob Cousy Award winner? Barnes and staff have a familiar response ready. You don t replace D.J. and you re not trying to replace him, Barnes said. The same thing could be said of Kevin Durant, T.J. Ford, LaMarcus Aldridge and Daniel Gibson. We don t replace those guys. This is a new year with a different team, so roles will change. The Longhorns return four starters and nine of their top 10 scorers from last year s team which posted a 31-7 record. Texas returns 73% of its scoring, 90% of its rebounding and nearly 80% of its minutes played from last season s team. UT does lose the services of Augustin who was taken as the No. 9 pick in the NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. All Augustin did last year was claim the Cousy Award as the nation s top collegiate point guard and earn both consensus first-team All-America and first-team Academic All- America accolades. Senior guard A.J. Abrams is the top returning scorer (16.5 ppg) in the Big 12 Conference. Junior guard Justin Mason earned a spot on Sports Illustrated s All-Glue Team last season and should be one of the top perimeter defenders in the league. Fifth-year senior forward/center Connor Atchley garnered mention on the Big 12 All-Improved and All-Defensive teams last year. Junior swingman Damion James is one of just six returning Division I players to average a double-double (13.2 ppg, 10.3 rpg). Senior guard A.J. 7 Season Outlook Despite the return of four starters, expect competition for playing time at virtually every spot on the floor. Sophomore forward Gary Johnson has put his health concerns from a year ago behind him and should be a key part of the rotation. Junior center Dexter Pittman attended the prestigious Pete Newell Big Man Camp in Las Vegas over the summer and is expected to be a more consistent presence in the frontcourt. Sophomore forwards Clint Chapman and Alexis Wangmene each had typical freshman seasons and will be expected to challenge for bigger roles this year. In addition, sophomore Matt Hill returns to the frontcourt rotation after missing last season with a left heel injury. In the backcourt, junior guard Harrison Smith dropped 20 pounds in the offseason and has worked himself into position to challenge for time in the rotation. Sophomore point guard Dogus Balbay (first name is pronounced Dohge) has fully recovered from a right knee injury last year and had a productive summer, leading Turkey to a third-place finish at the Under-20 European Championships. The lone freshman on the team, Varez Ward has caught the attention of the returning players and the staff early in individual workouts with his mental toughness. Barnes and the staff have their best combination of depth and experience in Austin to work with since the Sweet 16 squad. Despite holding opponents to 64.9 points per game and a.389 field goal percentage last year, all signs point to a much-improved team on the defensive end of the court. The vibe in Austin could best be described as hungry. Perhaps that would be strange for outsiders, considering the team s run to the Big 12 title and the Elite Eight last year. But not so for these Longhorns. That simply goes back to the character of our players and the infrastructure of our program, both on and off the court, Barnes said. Our current players understand and appreciate those who have come before them and the standard that has been set. Expectations are talked about here in every area, and all that carries over to what we expect on the court. Senior forward/center Connor Atchley, who earned his bachelor s degree in May and is currently enrolled in classes in the Graduate School of Advertising, led the Big 12 Conference in blocked shots (80) last season. did you know? Texas is one of just eight programs to have advanced to each of the last 10 NCAA Tournaments, joining Arizona, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State and Wisconsin. Texas is the only school in the country that can claim two National Player of the Year winners in the last six years (T.J. Ford in 2003; Kevin Durant in 2007). Texas has produced three consensus first-team All-Americans over the last six seasons, the top total in the country during this stretch (Ford in 2003; Durant in 2007; Augustin in 2008). Texas is the only school in the nation to have a Top 10 pick in each of the last three NBA Drafts (LaMarcus Aldridge, No. 2 in 2006; Kevin Durant, No. 2 in 2007; D.J. Augustin, No. 9 in 2008).
