PIONEERING DAYS CREEK RIVER DISTRICT CAMPOREE 2018 Leaders Guide CREEK RIVER DISTRICT

Camporee Theme: Pioneering Days Come join the fun of competing in Creek River District s Pioneering Days Camporee. Some events are the real deal. Some have a new twist to them. While others are simply made up in order to have spirited fun. This year we will have some separate activities for the Cub Scouts. When: March 23-25, 2018 Where: Diamond Lakes Regional Park - Hephzibah, Georgia Who: This event is open to all Council Boy Scout Troops. Webelos and Cub Scouts may attend, but must abide by BSA policies on camping. It will be a family camping weekend for the Cubs. Cubs may attend during the day and compete, but they must provide adults to assist in events. If we are to have some separate events for the Cubs, it is imperative for some Cub adults to volunteer to run some of the activities. This would be an excellent venue for cross-over campouts. Troop 8 will conduct cross-over ceremonies Cost: $ per youth and adult Deadline to Register: March 20, :00 pm Check-in Time: Friday, March 23 rd starting at 5:00 pm. You will be shown your camping area at that time. You must also turn in a roster of all youth and adult scouts attending (please use the form provided in this Leader s Guide). You will also be asked to turn in the names of at least two adults from your Troop to help run events. We ask that each Pack turn in several names to help out with Cub events. Check-out Time: By 1:00 pm Sunday, March 25 th

EVENT MAP * THIS MAP IS AN APPROXIMATION OF WHERE EVERYTHING WILL BE LOCATED Troops/Packs must have all parents sign the indemnity/release agreement for the county. (This form is at the end of the Guide) Competition Points: Points will be awarded in the following areas throughout the weekend: Theme-based campsite decorations, patrol flag, competition event scores, 1 theme-based meal, scout spirit (dress and team yells or chants) and campsite inspections on Saturday afternoon. The number of points awarded will ultimately depend on the number of Patrols/Troops that register and that will be determined at a later time. Camping: The camping area is considered primitive camping. There is no water so you will have to bring it. There are no bathrooms, but we will have Port-o-lets scattered along the road next to the campsites.
Troop Responsibilities: Each Troop will be required to provide at least two adults to assist in running events, inspect and judge. The more adult help we have the easier it will be on everyone helping out. Turn in the names of your adult helpers at check in. ** We reserve the right to cancel events due to lack of adult help or weather. We will finalize event staff at the Senior Patrol Leader and Scoutmaster meeting Friday night. Time and place to be determined. Troops will be responsible for their own food, water, equipment and transportation. Please make sure you bring the necessary health forms and first aid supplies. Please turn in names of anyone getting sick or injured to the Camporee Chairman or Camp Medical Officer. Patrols: Troops may enter as multiple Patrols. It is highly recommended that each Patrol has 6 8 members in it. Please check out all of the events because some may have limited slots for them. It would be nice to make sure everyone has equal representation in them. Camporee Staff: Camporee Position Camporee Chairman Assistant Camporee Chairman District Executive Medical Officer Archery Director Tomahawk / Hatchet Director Check In Check In Name Dan MacEachern Clarence Wright Wesley Brown Kevin Byrd/Dan MacEachern Tony Troxel Chad Sweeney C.J. Mitchell Joyce Widby Dan MacEachern Contact Information: dmac2134@hotmail.com 706/ A list of events and score sheets will be given out at Friday night s meeting. There will be no formal schedule. All Patrols are expected to rotate through all of the events. If you do not do an event you will not be given any points.
Boy Scout Competitive Events Potato Sack Race- This will be a timed event. Everyone in the patrol will compete and an average time will be determined. Each participant will start at a cone and race around another cone thirty feet away and come back to the starting cone. All of the participants times will be added up and divided by the number of participants Hoop Rolling Relay A total of 8 participants will participate in this relay. Someone may have to go twice. Participants will roll a hoop using just a stick around a cone 30 feet away and back to the starting point. The next participant may not leave until he has been given the stick and the hoop. If a hoop falls the participant must stop, pick up the hoop and use only the stick to get it moving again. Time stops when the last participant finishes. Stretcher Relay This will be a timed group event. Participants must assemble a simple stretcher and carry a victim of their choice around a cone and back. If the stretcher falls apart or the victim falls off the team must start all over again from the starting point. Tomahawk Throw Each competitor may have three throws. Points will be given for tomahawks landing in the painted center area and for just sticking to the target. It will be up to the event coordinator on the scoring of blades not totally in the painted center. (possible point scenario 5 pts inside painted center, 1 point sticking to target but outside painted center and up to coordinator on part way sticks) Archery Each competitor will have three to five shots at a target. Points (TBA) will be awarded accordingly as to the arrows location on the target. The top three scores in each Patrol will be added together. A short safety briefing must be given to each group before they shoot. (this may be eliminated if we can arrange for all scouters to hear it all at once. This will be discussed at Fridays Leader and SPL meeting at the Camp Directors camper)
Campfire- This event is the old fashion string burn. This is a flint and steel start only. The patrol must bring their own fire building materials and flint and steel with them. No accelerant will be allowed. The fire must be started from the bottom on the ground. No starting material such as paper, leaves, straw, lint, cotton, etc. can be placed at the top of the sticks or wood being used as fire fuel. There will be 2 strings stretched across 2 poles about inches apart. The bottom string will be 12 inches high and is the line under which all fire building materials must be. The top string will be 6 inches higher and will be the burn string. Scouts may not add any materials once the fire has started. Scouts will be allowed to position themselves to form windbreaks as needed. Patrols will be given a maximum of 5 minutes to arrange their fire building materials. When the materials are in place the event coordinator will tell the fire starter(s) to get ready, give a signal to begin and start the stopwatch. Time will stop when the top string breaks due to being burned through. This is a group time. Strings that are not burned through will be disqualified and no points will be awarded. Tee Pee Each Patrol will lash together three poles together using round lashings and make them all of equal length. Once 3 poles are made they will be lashed together using a tripod lash. Once the teepee poles are lashed together it must be stood upright and free standing. This is a timed event that all members must participate in. The event will start on the judge s signal and end when the teepee is upright and the patrol leader signals to stop the stopwatch. When the event has been scored the patrol must take everything apart and lay the supplies out as they found them. Horseshoes Each participant will try their hands at tossing horseshoes. Each Patrol member will toss 3 horseshoes. Points will be assessed as follows: Ringer 5 points, Leaner 3 points and within a shoe width 1 point. The top three scores from each Patrol will be added up to determine the final Patrol score.
Knot Rodeo - This will be a timed event. Each participant will ride a horse to a hitching post, tie a required knot and ride back to the starting point where he will tag the next participant waiting in line on his horse. This relay will continue until all seven required knots are tied and the last horse crosses the finish line. The order of knots will be as follows: square knot, bowline, clove hitch, two half hitches, taught-line hitch, sheet bend and timber hitch. All knots must be tied correctly or a 2 minute penalty will be assessed for each knot that is not properly done. Patrol members will draw a number to see what order they will go in. If there is not enough members in the patrol then someone will go twice until all not are tied. If there are more than 7 in the patrol, blank pieces of paper will be put in the hat and those drawing blanks must sit out. All knots will be tied according to the directions found in the Scout Handbook.
Cub Scout Events Potato Sack Race as described in the Boy Scout Events Horse Shoes - as described in the Boy Scout Events Hoop Rolling Relay - as described in the Boy Scout Events Pea Shooter This will be a non-competitive/non-scoring fun event. Participants will use straws and blow rice at targets attempting to knock them down. Each participant will have 5 shots. Straws and rice must be disposed of at the event site. Blind Folded Obstacle Course Each competitor must go through an obstacle course completely blind folded. They must rely on their team members directions to navigate the course. Team members will be allowed to spread out outside the boundaries of the course and shout out directions. A competitor must go through the course in the proper order. This is a non-competitive team building event Fishing Try your luck fishing in the lake. Georgia fishing licenses are required for those 16 years of age and above. Bring your own rods, tackle and bait. Button Whirligig Each participant will make and decorate their own button whirligig toy. * The Camporee Committee reserves the right to cancel any event due to weather, lack of adult help, venue or safety concerns. ** Some of the events may be altered or changed for the Cubs.
