Issue no. 99 Winter 2017 Another fantastic fireworks night at The Lensbury celebrated with a spectacular display, fun entertainment for the kids and plenty of food and drink for all. The dry weather was kind to us, clear skies made for a magical evening. Bike Thieves It is disappointing to note that over the past few years (2015, 2016, 2017) bicycle theft has been on the increase within Teddington. The Lensbury did not suffer a significant change in bicycle thefts in 2015 and However during 2017 we have seen an increase. In the past year over 9% of reported crime in Teddington has been of bicycle theft. Nationally only an average of 10% of reported bicycle thefts have a positive outcome. In an effort to keep your bicycle safe and to minimise the chance of it being stolen, we recommend investing in a good cycle lock. 1. Buy the best approved lock money can buy. Each lock manufacturer has their own protection rating. In most cases, the better the lock, the more expensive it will be. Most bike locks are rated on a Sold Secure scale and are given a rating of Bronze, Silver or Gold. Bronze is the weakest and Gold is the strongest. Check your insurance policy as in the unfortunate event that your bicycle is stolen it may be a requirement of the insurer that it was secured using the appropriate Sold Secure lock. 2. Efficient Locking The Sheldon method is a well-known strategy to secure your bicycle which requires the D-Lock to go through the rear wheel (inside the rear triangle of the frame), securing the bike to something solid. Or use a slightly larger D-Lock that can go through the rear wheel and part of the frame. The two most expensive parts of the bicycle are the frame and the rear wheel. Ensure the D-lock is securely fastened. A mid-range D-lock will offer a thickness of 13mm 15mm, a top range D-lock will offer a thickness of 16mm and above. In both cases ensure that it is made from hardened steel with a high security cylinder. Make sure when you lock your bicycle that the cylinder is point down and never place the lock towards the bottom of the bicycle. Try and use two different types of locks such as a D-lock, chain lock or cable flex as it would require a thief to use two different types of tools to remove it. 3. Register your bike It s important you register your bike as this will deter thieves and assist the police in identifying the bike should it be stolen. Refer to Bikeregister.com. Sources:

2 2 LENSBURY NEWS Issue 99 Winter 2017 Dear Members, I hope everyone has had a chance to see the new Rock hall and Dunbar Rooms. We have been serving Sunday Lunch in the Dunbar Room throughout October and have had a great response to this new room. The Sunday Lunch has been selling out, since its move to this space, so if you are interested, please do book early. We have also opened up the Dunbar for dinner bookings on Friday and Saturday nights, as of November. Doing staged openings, allows the staff to get used to the new kitchen and service arrangements and we will be expanding open evenings, as we get up to speed. There has been a lot of excitement around the new Playground. The new equipment has been installed as well as the new play surface. There has been an external inspection by a health and safety company which specializes in children s play areas, and all was passed with flying colours. The new bedrooms opened in September, increasing the number of bedrooms that have two Queen or King sized beds. This has been a very popular configuration especially with families and friends travelling together. The larger bedrooms incorporate new bathrooms as well and small seating areas in the design. Another tranche of small, single bedrooms will undergo this treatment starting in January giving us another eight bedrooms in this new configuration. We have seen a significant increase in Members booking the bedrooms, as we have improved the quality of the space and fittings with Christmas around the corner we expect this trend to continue. Our roof programme continues with the replacement of the Main Kitchen roof, which will be finished in December. The heating and cooling systems are being replaced with modern equipment which will help to continue lowering our carbon footprint, as well as improving work conditions in the kitchen. It has also had the advantage of improving the appearance of our roofs by allowing for a consolidation and improved placement of equipment. Our roof programme will see work on the Wimbledon Building next year. Reducing electricity usage is also an ongoing, planned programme and the Facilities team have replaced all the lighting bollards around the Front Circle, as well as all the external lights on the front of the Clubhouse and the Conference Centre. These new, energy efficient LED lights will use much less energy, look good and unify the light presentation of our exterior. You may also notice the small, wooden house on the back of the cypress tree our carpenter Peter created that when the old pipe cover needed replacing a bit of fun! On behalf of the staff I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season whether you are travelling or staying home this year. The Lensbury News Winter Offers In 2018 The Lensbury accommodation packages will be changing, in order to offer our members and guests more flexibility and the best rates possible. All rooms will now be bookable on either a Room Only option (no breakfast) or Half Board option (dinner, bed & breakfast). Breakfast can be added at an extra cost if required, and this will be offered towards the end of the booking process on The Lensbury website. Alternatively if booking over the telephone, the Front Desk team can add this option in for you. The Half Board option will include an evening meal in our brand new Dunbar Room, which some of our members may remember as The Ballroom. This room has been completely redesigned and will feature an all new unique menu, due to be launched in January, watch this space for more details! Contactless payments, live news feeds and links to fitness applications are all initiatives that will be launched next year. On a more serious note, the unfortunate actions from a minority of members hinder the satisfaction of others by booking in for multiple studio classes and then no show on a regular basis. We wholeheartedly appreciate that emergencies do occasionally happen and a class might be missed. However, the regularity of this issue from certain constituents means that other members continuously lose out on a place in a class. Legend carried out market research on hundreds of clubs across the UK and North America and will be assisting The Lensbury in introducing penalties for repeat offenders from December onwards. Hopefully, this will lead to a behavioural change from the minority and ultimately bring about a more pleasant booking experience for all. The end of season grass court preparation went very well and we look forward to utilising these courts next May.

This is a great testament to the quality of coaches here at the Club. The 2018 spring term is coming up very quickly.

The roadside courts were due to be painted this summer but owing to unforeseen circumstances in other projects, this has been postponed until next summer.

4 4 LENSBURY NEWS Issue 99 Winter 2017 The Lensbury Shuttle Bus has gone Green! In our drive to further reduce our carbon footprint, we have purchased a new all-electric shuttle bus. The new Nissan Tekna is one of the first to be sold in the UK. We had to wait for eight months to get delivery of the vehicle. We only need to charge it twice a week at the most and this is done overnight normally. The performance of the vehicle is equal to our previous shuttle, but a little smaller in size. We feel this is a very positive move in reducing our carbon footprint as the shuttle bus when busy could do 20 to 30 trips per day. Tennis and Squash News Tennis News Tennis here at The Lensbury has gone from strength to strength. The investment into the new riverside artificial grass courts plus the two new mini courts has received great feedback. The end of season grass court preparation went very well and we look forward to utilising these courts next May. The coaching program continues to grow - so much that we have added a number of new junior and adult groups to help meet the demand. There are currently over 500 players in the coaching program. This is a great testament to the quality of coaches here at the Club. The 2018 spring term is coming up very quickly. Rebooking for members currently in the coaching program, opens on Monday 20th November. New and non-members can book from Monday 4th December. There are limited spaces so sign up early. The Lensbury teams have started their winter campaigns. We have one men s, three ladies, one mixed, two vets, 9U mixed and 14U Boys teams, currently competing. Squash News We are happy to welcome Imran Khan as the new Lensbury squash coach. Imran is looking forward to helping grow squash here at The Lensbury. The Lensbury 1st team are currently topping their division (6B) with two wins under their belt. The Lensbury 2nd team (Division 7R) are currently sitting in 5th place after one win and one loss (information as of 09/11/17).Good luck to everyone taking part and let s hope for another successful season. Members can now book squash courts and for the Monday Club Night online. This is a fantastic step forward and we hope this makes your booking journey more efficient. 6 6 LENSBURY NEWS Issue 99 Winter 2017 Watersports News The 2017 season at the Watersports Centre has been our most remarkable yet! Our dragon boats arrived mid-april and took the river by storm. The Lensbury entered its own team into the Kingston Rotary Regatta Dragon Boat Challenge and after hours of evening training in all weathers and a full day of racing, the team reached the final race of top nine boats. The team finished 8th overall out of 55 entries which was a tremendous achievement. We also raised over 700 for charity. If you would like to be part of the team next year please speak to the Watersports team direct, training will start at the beginning of April As always, the London Youth Games was the underlining achievement of the year! The combined results of the London Youth Games Sailing and Kayaking squads helped Richmond win the Regatta trophy for another year. The teams for the kayak slalom and sailing events were selected and trained at the Lensbury Watersports Centre for the 10th year running. The kayakers won Gold for the third year running resulting in Richmond being the top London borough for kayaking. The end of this season marks Falcon Compton s second season as Chief Watersports Instructor at the Lensbury, lending his experience and expertise to members and staff alike. He had the following to say: I have thoroughly enjoyed yet another season at the Lensbury Watersports Centre. I have found it challenging but most rewarding. I would like to thank all of the members and my staff at the Watersports Centre for their continued support Our Summer Holiday programme of courses has been as busy as any other season! All courses and club sessions were very well attended, and some familiar local schools came to use the facilities during term-time as well as some schools that wanted to explore what we offer. We are now winding down the season and only opening Saturday and Sundays from 10:00-15:00 until 19th November. From the 20th November we will be closed until the 10th March Finally, to all our members and customers this season, please accept our thanks for your patronage this year. We are very proud of our unique facility here at The Lensbury, one that no other health club can offer. Both classes are based in our high energy studio and are suitable for all abilities. Please see below for more information on the new classes: Pad Fusion is a combination of High Intensity body conditioning training. This includes a core workout, fused with partner assisted pad workouts. The body conditioning training utilises both body weight and free weights resistance exercises that will increase your metabolism by improving muscle tone, as well as strength and endurance. The inclusion of the core workout is essential to strengthen abdominal muscles and the spine, to keep away back pain, and enable you to transfer power from lower to upper body and thus produce powerful punches. The partner assisted boxing pad workout will enable you to improve your boxing techniques; speed, agility, reaction time, and acquire boxing skills.
