Check out the free club surf tournament on October 6 th, the first ever pier tournament on October 13 and finally the annual picnic at Hershel King Park on October 20 th. You can read about all of those events further on in the Chum Line so don t miss a page this month. Your board has been hard at work on next years budget and events calendar. We distributed a survey during last months meeting and again via for your input on where you want to go in You should have received another survey copy via before this months meeting; so fill it out and bring it We are teaming up with the City of Flagler Beach to host the 1 st Annual Flagler Pier Tournament on October 13th. The city has asked us to help them reach new potential users and expose more people to the delights of the pier. The rules are simple It costs $20 to enter and it is limited to the first 200 anglers to sign up. Just a quick thank you for having the beach get together yesterday. We really enjoyed ourselves and it was so nice to be able to have a chance to talk to the other club members in the beautiful setting of waves, sand and sun. Enclosing some pics for you that Danny snapped, I will try to post some on our fishing club Facebook page also with a comment about yesterday. See you soon. Take Care, Carol & Danny by: President Chuck Gleichmann with you. For you non ers, there will be hard copies for you at the meeting. There has been some great feed back so far, so make sure to get your two cents in. Remember, this is your club and the board works for you. Finally, thanks to all of our club members who volunteered and/or fished the 24 th Annual Inshore Tournament. Our tournament directors did a great job and put on a successful tournament but it would not have happened without our members support. Nice work for a great cause. Tight Lines! by Dean Roberts Fish between 7 and 11am on the pier for bluefish, whiting, black drum and red fish and win $150 for the largest fish in each category. October is a great time to fish the pier, so grab you sand fleas, and shrimp and give it a shot. If you need more information give me a call at or check in at the piers bait shop.
2 Chuck Gleichmann President Chuck Radloff Vice President Tim Miller Treasure Scott Fehrenkamp Secretary Richard McCleery Corresponding Secretary Mike Brennan Sergeant at Arms Mike Vickers Weigh Master Jeff Fehrenkamp Quarter Master DIRECTORS Hank Alper Bruce Bandes Jim Britton Scott Cornleius Chris Davy Tim Miller Bill Morgan Dean Roberts WEBMASTER Jim Booth EDITOR John R. Raybon Printed by Dolphin Printing by: Captain Jim Britton Ahh cooler weather! The fish will be feeling the temperature change this month also. A look back at my last few years of logbooks reminded me that larger flounder should be showing up shortly. My logs indicated that I need to stock up on red jigheads and fishfinder rigs. When fishing in the creeks, I like to put a mud minnow or a finger mullet on a ¼ ounce red jighead, cast up current and retrieve slowly through one of the deep holes of the creek. To target the doormats, fish the inlets, on an outgoing tide, with a fishfinder rig and a larger mullet on a circle hook. With either tactic, wait for line to get heavy and then just come tight on your line and reel the flatties up to the boat! Inshore enthusiasts can also expect a steady sheephead and black drum bite during October. Target these fish around structure or any deeper area that has rock piles or oysters. The topwater sea trout bite will also warm up as the water temperature cools down. October will be a transition month for surf fisherman. Make sure you take advantage of the water temperatures above 68 degrees, by getting to the beach to hunt pompano and whiting. These fish will start to migrate south soon, in search of warmer water. This will probably be the last month for targeting tarpon on the beach as well. Offshore anglers will enjoy an active bite in many ranges of water, this month. Bottom fishing on the wrecks and reefs, in the 10 to 20 mile range, will yield grouper, sea bass, and cobia. While moving spots, be on the lookout for sailfish crashing bait at the surface. A trip to the ledge will find dolphin and wahoo in the trolling spread. And for those adventurous anglers willing to trek out to the rolldown, be ready to fly your marlin flag on the way home. One Friday morning Capt Vickers was at the inlet and had Brandon Currier and his dad, Joe fishing on his 22 foot Pathfinder Bay boat. Brandon caught his first 25 inch, 4.8 pound redfish that morning. After a four hour fishing trip the score was Brandon 15, Joe 1, better luck next time Joe. 6 Saturday, September 9, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Hurricane Patty s the Flagler Sportfishing Club held the weigh in for their 24 th Annual Inshore Classic Tournament. With a field of 85 anglers and over fifty fish being weighted in, the weight-in station was a busy place. Some of the highlights were: Cody Moore came in with a 7 pound 1 ounce Trout for 1 st place in that division. Stephen Cox took 1 st place Redfish with a 6 pound 7 ounce fish and John Dodd weighted in a Flounder at 3 pounds 4 ounces for 1 st place in that species. Billy Page weighted in one Flounder, one Redfish and one Trout for a total weight of 8 pounds 6 ounces to win the Flagler Slam. Scott Cornelius walked away with $ for the biggest fish in the Big Fish Calcutta. The beneficiary of the tournament, the Kaphan family also attended the weight-in. Their son, Tristan Kaphan was born on June 14, 2012 with a heart condition and will need three operations before he is four years old. On a lighter side, I did get Emily and James Kaphan to hold some of the fish that were caught during the tournament. Emily really did not want to because the trout was still alive and wiggling. Other tournament winners were: Trout Flounder Redfish First Cody Moore, 7.1 John Dodd, 3.25 Stephen Cox, 6.7 Second Cody Moore, 3.4 Jay Martindale, 3.15 Greg Wilk, 5.5 Third Billy Page, 3.4 Patrick Caulbee, 3.05 Scott Cornelius, 5.35 Fourth David Arnolds, 2.25 Jim McCartney, 3.0 Evan Hanes, 4.8 Flagler Slam (one fish of each category, total weight) Billy Page, 8.6. 8 Flagler Sportfishing Club PO Box Palm Coast, FL Stamp Goes Here Mailing Address Goes Here Meeting called to order by Chuck Gleichmann at 7:30 pm. There is news that a dual weekend season for Red Snapper has been approved from Sept and rd. According to Capt. Mike there is no size limit other than 1 fish per angler. OLD BUSINESS: Tristan Kaplan & Inshore Update: Capt Jim Britton and Chris Davy gave a brief update on the Inshore Tournament to be held at Hurricane Patti s this weekend. Sign up is at 5pm, Capt s meeting is Friday 7pm along with a silent auction. Be sure to come and support the club! 24 Hours of Flagler Tournament: Chris Davy gave a brief update that he 40 anglers attended with everyone having a good time. Sounds like the bigger payout and Calcutta went over well. Beach Party: Turnout was less than expected but according to Capt Jim Britton, everyone had a nice time. All in all, not bad for a first time event, I look forward to a second event next year. New Business: Minutes taken by: Scott Fehrenkamp Picnic: Chuck Gleichmann stated this year s fall picnic will be held Oct 20 th at Herschel King Park. The same caterer will be providing ribs, chicken and pulled pork as last year. There will be a swap meet, raffle, 50/50, kids fishing contest, casting contest and the ever popular Horseshoe contest. Mark your calendars, something for everyone. Survey: Tim Miller explained the value of completing recently ed survey and its importance for members to complete and return to help guide the Board with scheduling for next year s events. Any Other New Business: Richard McCleery provided an update on Project Eagle Eye which is progressing well. There will be live web cam s located at various spots along the ICW which will give you a bird s eye view of the current weather as well as wind and tide information. Jim Booth has our new website up and running with a link to our facebook account which now lists 100 friends of the club. Pretty cool stuff, thanks Jim! Break for 10 minutes Guest speaker: Capt. Nathan Lemmon gave a very informative discussion of how to read the signs that nature provides us while on the water. Capt. Nathan referred to 4 variables that he watches closely. High water this time of year produces dirty water when the tide falls, providing excellent chances for big fish to ambush bait fish. Storms bringing heavy rains also impact the salinity which in turn affects the smaller fish more so than larger ones. This can cause bait fish to move out of flats into deeper water located closer to inlets. Typically this time of year we experience a Fall bait run with fish migrating south. The trick is to watch for bait pods, Pelicans and especially Osprey s circling overhead to point you in the right direction. Fall is a Great time to fish according to Capt. Nathan, which is right on our doorstep, so take advantage. 50/50: was won by John Ford for $55.00 and the rod n reel raffle went to Vinny Alongi, Congrats you guys. Meeting was 9:30
