Steep Cricket Club 2017 AGM Reports Chairman s Report. In two years time our Club will be celebrating its 125 th Anniversary and rather to my alarm I have been around for nearly half of them! However, despite the temptations, this report is not about the good old days but concentrates on the positive things as I see them in 2016 Steep Cricket. Near the top of my list must be the quality of our wicket, where totals in excess of 200 are now the norm, and we can justifiably claim to have one of the best tracks in the area. A decent wicket is the foundation for good cricket and we owe John Smith and his helpers a great vote of thanks for his labours over the last half dozen seasons. Dave Elsey s work on the outfield is not far behind. Our practice facilities have also improved out of all recognition, with the bowling machine in regular use and a replacement ATP installed this summer. However it may be we could practice more effectively (discuss?) Pavilion improvements are clear for all to see and when completed should be the envy of most Clubs our size. Special thanks are due to Jimmy Kiddle for his work on this and it is gratifying that costs have been kept to the minimum with members doing much of the work. The continued development of Junior Cricket has been most encouraging with Juniors graduating to the Senior sides in increasing numbers. Of the many members involved in this special mention must be made of Jhon Cosgrove whose infectious energy and enthusiasm has infected a whole generation to good effect. Jhon has also done noble work raising funds. Behind all this activity there is a surprising amount of paperwork and in Ian Campbell we have a Secretary whose diligent attention to the Club s paperwork, whether it be in producing business plans, grant applications, health and safety policies and the rest is legendary. Never has getting all this right been so important. On the field we should note that Ed Ellis led his 2 nd XI to well earned promotion and the First team acquitted themselves with credit. As an observer both teams have been fun, if sometimes frustrating, teams to watch, and provided good entertainment. The captains will no doubt report in more detail. John Smith in particular warrants special gratitude and is the guiding spirit behind everything that happens, we can only hope that new found responsibilities (with which we wish him well) will not be allowed to distract him in the years ahead. Finally I would like to mention the bequest of 10,000 we received from Gladys Fiander. Few, if any of you will, know who Gladys was. Twenty perhaps thirty years ago she and her husband Reg attended all our matches, when Reg died he left us 1000 in his will. They were very ordinary people, not wealthy but like many of us they loved Steep Cricket Club and what it stood for. Gladys reminds us that we are not simply a bunch of guys playing cricket but part of the community, a wider family and a tradition of which we should all be proud. Thank you Steep for another good season. Some possible discussion points: *Is our long term policy to rival Petersfield or Liphook as the premier local club or should we

concentrate on being the best traditional family village club? *Should we or can we encourage more movement between first and second xis *How can we make better use of the area to the left of the pavilion? Should long term plan include extending the Dressing Rooms? *Any ideas about how we can tidy up the area beside the Mower Shed and make the shed more secure. *The Community Day and the President s Match may need looking at to try and involve more potential friends from the wider community. Vice Chairman s Report My ideas for the development of the club are as follows: Pavilion: - Club room needs internal overhaul desperately. We should look to board out and paint the ceiling and wall and put down new carpet or similar. To me, the building itself is just about acceptable size wise so any extensions should be part of any 5 year plans we may have. - With the increase in youngsters in and around the club, the area to the left of the pavilion as you look at it might benefit from being made a bit more child friendly. I have voiced my concerns over flying cricket balls hitting children on many occasions so if we can get a single area where the kids can go and somehow protect as best as possible, then the nightmare scenario might not happen!! - A new set of numbers for the scoreboard would be nice. I ve seen some digital numbers with sliders on rather than turning which look quite good. Wicket and outfield: - Thanks to hard work of John and Dave E I do not see any necessity for capital expenditure here: just normal ongoing costs - The mower shed does need overhauling and should be done soon. This is an ongoing thing and probably doesn t need the AGM to give its say so Playing equipment: - To my mind the standard of cricket we play in won and lost on the ability to catch and field properly. We all have nets where can go to bat and bowl but fielding and catching is almost never practiced. The first XI drop at least one catch a match which probably results in two losses a season. For this reason I feel that we should invest in a fielding machine this is similar to the bowling machine but provides balls to catch and field. I believe the existing bowling machine could fulfill this task but it normally being used for batting practice. I understand the cost for one of these will be around 2000 which makes it a sizeable investment: however I personally believe it could be the difference between promotion and stagnation - The bottom nets are underused for reasons we are all aware of. The only solution in my mind would be to rotate through 90 degree which I don t see as practical

- The roll on nets are too low for the spinners to bowl properly. I would advise we either amend one so there is no top net or look at buying another, taller one so that we are not encouraging flat bowling Secretary s Report Another successful year on and off the pitch. The junior section is still growing and with this the club passed another Clubmark reassessment and are accredited until Various funding has been granted via The Big Lottery (Pavilion), Biffa (New All weather pitch) and finally EHDC for the new roller. No welfare issues to report. Hopefully Amanda Bell to take over part of the role. The Club has completed the on- line annual health check which reflects on what we have achieved over the last year and our plans going forward including the new Club 5 Year Plan. Treasurers Report Income: 1. Annual subscriptions were down for both seniors & juniors - 2,632 (2015-3,206). 2. Match subs were also lower - 1,507 (2015-1,634). 3. The Juniors received 2 grants for kit and playing equipment - 1, Other income is the Stoolball contribution as last year. 5. We received an unexpected bequest of 10, Banners brought in 2,045 (last year - 1,514). 7. Other donations & fundraising made 1,605 ( ) due to Race Night surplus of 815. Outgoings: 1. Rates, water, insurance & electricity slightly up - 1,514 (2015-1,477). 2. Ground & equipment etc down - 2,152 (2015 2,703). 3. Playing equipment up due to extra junior kit - 1,482 (2015-1,222). 4. Nets overall cost 200 ( ). 5. No umpires for the 1sts this year ( ). 6. Also no coaching courses ( ). Projects: 1. The renovations to the pavilion cost 15,615 against which we secured a grant of from the Big Lottery Fund. 2. The replacement ATP cost 10,072 less a BIFFA grant of 9, Other equipment purchases, roll on net, cover for square, Bowdry machine etc, costs 2,042 with a grant of 1,000. Summary: 1. An overall surplus for the year of 4,402 (2015 deficit 1,641) but this is after taking account of the 10,000 bequest so really a loss of 5, Funds in hand at the end of the year - 11,830 (2015-7,026). Fundraising Report Banners made a profit of 1996 We received 500 from TPC for U19s kit Race night thanks to Dale Collins

200 from Harrow Christmas Draw Various grants & awards - BIFFA etc. Fundraising aims for next year: Banner money, possible shirt sponsor, Big Banger event. 1 st Team Captain Report A season that can best be described as average. People performed well at times but with no consistency. The fielding that is very important at the level we play could be improved to bring more success. The spirit of the team is good and everyone always enjoys playing. The young lads coming through the system has been a huge plus point. Not only making up the numbers but being brought in with a role in mind and performing in that role. A big focus on practise and the method of practise is needed to push on to the next level. Going into the league above is very achievable with the set of players, performing on a consistent basis is what is needed. 2 nd Team Captain Report The 2 nd Eleven finished second in Regional Division 1 South, securing our second successive promotion in the process. We completed 13 league games, winning 9 games, losing 3 and tying 1. Our success was built around a well-balanced and consistently available top 5. The side was a good mixture of youth (7 players below the age of 17 appeared for us) and experience and a solid base of players in their 20s and 30s. Highlights: Tom Callingham was again the leading run scorer (367 runs) and wicket taker (21 wickets). Mike Burkie hit the only century of the season at home against IBM South Hants (112 Not out, including five 6s) 3 50s for Callingham, 2 for Ellis (and 2 49s), 2 for McCubbin, 1 for Dale, Knight, Lewis Great to see Steve Curtis back to full health and bowling as well as ever (16 wickets at 9.3) Under 16 Jack Paul led the bowling attack brilliantly, taking a wicket with the first ball of the opposition s innings twice and regularly picking up big wickets. We are unbeaten at home since opening day of the season and won our last 5 games in a row to secure promotion. We will be playing in the county divisions for the first time next summer. It will obviously be a step up in standard but I think that we are more than capable of holding our own at that level. Most importantly, playing in the county divisions will be the ideal place for our young players to prove they are good enough to make the step up to first team cricket. Sunday Team Captain Report Won 8 games, lost 10, 4 cancelled, 3 abandoned. Player of the season - Aiden Parker Vice Captain who didn't play any games - Rich Atkins 7 different wicket keepers Only hundred - Dean Knight Only 5 wicket haul - Jhon Coz Worst wicket keeper - Jack Campbell Worst hat - Ray Street 3 U13s played - James Turner, Jonty Page and Aiden Parker Lots of U17s played Ada & Gareth played nearly every game.

2016 AGM Fixture secretary and webmaster report Fixtures: 1 st XI had 3 games abandoned due to the weather this year and one team dropped out of the league. 2 nd XI lost 4 games to the weather The Sunday side had to abandon three games after they had started due to the weather and the Lavant game was called off before the day. Two sides had to cancel in advance (Black Sheep & The Spread) but we were able to get a fixture against another team for those. Two sides let us down by not being able to field a team (Hampshire Bowman and Langstone) who we won t be playing next summer. We were also unable to field a full side for our last game against Crondall. I have moved the fixture to earlier in the season next year which should help. The two friendly 20/20 matches scheduled after the Ashurst league were cancelled so that the 1 st XI could use the nets on those Thursdays. Also due to matches being postponed in the Ashurst league the season lasted longer than anticipated leading to midweek fixture congestion plans: Season will start on Sunday 23rd April, with a home game against Clanfield. League likely to start May 6 th so pre-season game for 1 st XI only will be on 29th April. Season will end on Sunday 17 th September. No 20/20 s to be played apart from Ashurst league which we are entering again. Most Sunday games already confirmed. I am planning one Over 50 s game, against The Rain Men. Presidents Match v East Meon agreed for 23rd July. Community weekend being planned for 2 nd & 3 rd September (ie: the weekend after the end of the league season). End of season tour may not happen. Website: Between the 1 st May and 30 th September we had a total of 4328 visitors (14.5% decrease on 2015). Unique visitors totalled 1866 (18% increase on 2015). Average: 865/373 per month Between the 1 st May and 30 th September we had a total of 5063 visitors (47% increase on 2014). Unique visitors totalled 1579 (32% increase on 2014). Average: 1013/328 per month. Most visited page after home page was 1 st XI fixtures the same as per last year!
